I love this quote: The romantic image of an über-programmer is someone who fires up Emacs, types like a machine gun, and delivers a flawless final product from scratch. A more accurate image would be someone who stares quietly into space for a few minutes and then says “Hmm. I think I’ve seen something like this before.”

KindleGen is a command line tool used to build eBooks that can be sold through Amazon's Kindle platform. This tool is best for publishers and individuals who are familiar with HTML and want to convert their HTML, XHTML, XML (OPF/IDPF format), or ePub source into a Kindle Book.

This is one of the main reasons I didn't move back to the Bay Area after college. Unfortunately Portlanders have become similarly narrow-minded the past few years. Even if I agree with most of the opinions (bikes and organic food: good; sprawl and corporations: bad) it'd be nice if there was a bit less groupthink here.

is the world’s first counter-extremism think tank. Located in London, our founders are former leading ideologues of UK-based extremist Islamist organizations. Quilliam stands for religious freedom, human rights, democracy and developing a Muslim identity at home in, and with the West.

We had dinner there Saturday evening. Very good.

"Yup. Either T-Mobile or Virgin Mobile can cost you next to nothing. I pay between 8-10 bucks a month and have more text messages than I could possibly use."

The MySQL Query Browser and MySQL Administrator applications are both very good. They just don't integrate any of it into the System Prefs.

"I've waited nearly a year for this. It is the group Cantores in Ecclesia, one of the most extraordinary liturgical vocal ensembles in the United States, with a recorded sung Mass, start to finish, in Latin. The chant is undoubtedly perfect."

I love the comment "We're all waiting for the version with printed guitar chords."

"Text messaging is a wonderful business to be in: about 2.5 trillion messages will have been sent from cellphones worldwide this year. The public assumes that the wireless carriers’ costs are far higher than they actually are, and profit margins are concealed by a heavy curtain."

I read this this morning and was not at all surprised. It boggles my mind how many people pay 50-100 bucks a month for services that cost the carriers almost nothing. Cable TV is even more absurd. As much as I like technology, I'm just not willing to get screwed like that.

"Although I started taking photos to become a better photographer, I keep taking them because I’ve learned to love the process. And, luckily, at least as far as I can tell, dedication to the process can’t help but make you a better photographer — or a better whatever, for that matter."

I enjoyed this piece too. Made me recall my bread baking, which is all about process. And, yes, when I began baking I sucked hard. 4 years on, I'm getting decent, but I've still got a long way to go.

That's not really ironic at all. Toyota is part of NASCAR now.
- Matthew Gifford
Oh snap, you're right. I knew they were a part of NASCAR but I didn't realize it was a souped up Camry they drove. This was mid 90's model though, very staid... not the slightest bit riced out. It was an odd juxtaposition.

"I would suggest that there is a difference between "spinning" and "inciting racial hatred and violence." Drudge and the McCain campaign don't seem to be able to tell the difference. (Waiting for someone to accuse me of playing the race card in 5, 4, 3, 2,...)"

"Money quote: "The problem with Gov. Palin is not that she lacks experience. It's that she quite plainly lacks intellectual curiosity. It is not snobbish to harbor grave doubts about somebody who seems uninterested in reading for pleasure or recreation and whose only interest in her local public library is sniffing round its shelves for books that ought to be removed for expressing impure ideas.""

"FTA: "It therefore seems to me that the Republican Party has invited not just defeat but discredit this year, and that both its nominees for the highest offices in the land should be decisively repudiated, along with any senators, congressmen, and governors who endorse them." Beautiful."
