Nobody likes spoken word on FriendFeed, or does everyone ignore Seesmic videos? :) - Rahsheen Porter
Rah: I'm guilty of hiding Seesmic videos... =| - Mona N.
I was going to ask if this was the case, but this was better. I was curious because I ignore (don't hide, though) them also. They come with a cryptic title and no context, even though the videos on Seesmic carry descriptions. Seesmic+FriendFeed should fix this. - Rahsheen Porter
I waffle between hiding and showing but rarely view them - I find talking head video generally a waste of bandwidth, mindwidth and time - Brian Sullivan
I don't hide them, I was just commuting and missed this. I like what you did as well as spoken word in general. - Mark Trapp
'Mindwidth' - My new word for the week. +1 Brian - John Worthington
I have a lot of micro services hidden... But I am a HUGE fan of spoken word and a lot of friends involved in the community (in real life). Keep doing your thing, dude! :) - Mona N.
This was really an experiment. Some of you (ok, maybe none) will recognize this as the second verse to Social Media Mogul on last.fm. I agree with Brian, most of these vids are pretty useless. I guess I will be sure to leave a detailed comment if the vid is something I actually want people here to watch (assuming they are not automagically hidden) - Rahsheen Porter

Homemade mac & cheese FTW! My wife claims that she makes it, but I have seen no evidence of this in the 14 years we've been married. I made it in culinary school (quattro formaggio) but that's been a while. I may have to make it at home just to draw her out. - Harvey Simmons

Man... I am way too worked up now... all I wanted was to take a screenshot and email it to somewhere... can't save the screenshot to the desktop for some reason (why not??) ok, can save it to clipboard... There's no "Paint" on the Mac... can't email the clipboard... have to download something else to do it... First try TuxPaint, can't paste into it!! Finally downloaded Skitch... Skitch makes a file for me and shows me in Safari. Can't find the file (why can't you paste the file path in Finder??) so have it upload to Skitch's site so I can go to Windows and download it. Geeze. I hate Macs. - Lindsay Donaghe
And why is there no freaking context menu?? How can you Mac people survive without context menus??? - Lindsay Donaghe
If you do a *Apple Key*+Shift+4 command it should allow you to take a screenshot of just what you want to capture and put the picture on your desktop. At least it does for me. - Andrew Burd
Uh, what? Skitch. Snap. Drag to desktop. JPG ready for use. - Cyndy
it would NOT let me save to desktop - Lindsay Donaghe
Why isn't there just a simple paint program on the Mac? Seems like that's such a basic function... - Lindsay Donaghe
I switched from PC to Mac and one of the problems is that you need to 'unteach' yourself Microsoft usability. Microsoft is very hierarchy driven - Mac is not. OS X puts things where you can use them and provides menus for execution - but they don't layer millions of options everywhere. it's a minimalistic OS for usability, performance, and productivity. Key is to stop thinking like a Microsoft user! You'll get the hang of it and then you won't ever want to go back. - Douglas Karr
Apple-Shift-4 allows you to drag a snapshot and it saves to your desktop. No need to open "Paint", since you can size how you want it to be. For extra options, I'd recommend downloading Skitch. - Douglas Karr
Again, for some reason it would NOT let me save to the desktop... so my only option was to save to clipboard. Then it was a matter of figuring out how to get it out of the clipboard and into a file... which meant I had to download and install something else for what seems like a super simple use-case for any OS. - Lindsay Donaghe
Lindsay, you dragged it to the desktop and it didn't save? It saves in native Skitch format if you just hit save, but dragging and dropping saves it in the selected format. It's more getting used to Mac, like what Doug said. I'm WAY faster at screenshots with Skitch than I ever was on the PC. - Cyndy
I think all the apple UIs went down hill when they were nextized. They make great hardware (I amazed at the punishment my iPod takes), but I am really unimpressed with their software in this decade. In the 80s and 90s I was a max zealot - RAPatton
Don't say such things Lindsay; I'm yet to get my Mac and horror stories like this are not encouraging at all. - Gordon Swaby
one of the things that I hate about the Mac OS X is that when I want to select a file then hold down shift and select another file it won't automatically grab all the files inbetween unless I'm out of thumbnail view. But since I work with photos I need to be in thumbnail view. It's lame that it lacks this very basic file selecting functionality. - Thomas Hawk
Lindsay, did you try the Apple-Shift-4 combo? Seriously, it changed my life. Sooooooo much easier than Microsoft paint. But if you really really want a program for a Mac go here.... http://skitch.com/ (op sorry i see someone suggested skitch already ;-) - leigh himel
@leigh, Yeah I used the combo to save to the clipboard (couldn't save to desktop). I remembered Skitch after trying to download another program, mainly because I'd wanted to use it on PC before and was mad that it was only for Mac. So eventually I DID get the screenshot I needed but I had to have Skitch upload it to their site instead of doing anything with it locally. It just shouldn't have been that hard on the Mac. Windows comes with everything you need. - Lindsay Donaghe
Since every time I use a Mac I get totally lost and frustrated I really don't have the desire to try to "teach myself" to use it. I know how to do everything I want in Windows and I'm very efficient at it. Simple things like, in the Mac Evernote client you can't merge notes (or if you can, I couldn't figure it out). In Windows you just select the ones you want to merge, right click and select Merge. In Mac, no context menu and no file menu option for it... Why not? - Lindsay Donaghe
And why can't you paste a file path in Finder somewhere instead of having to navigate to it through the file tree? Skitch did manage to save the screenshot locally and it showed it in Safari with a url starting with file:/// but I couldn't do anything with that path in Finder and wasn't sure how to get to the temp directory since it wasn't listed anywhere I could see in Finder... - Lindsay Donaghe
From a long-time Windows user/developer, as efficient as you are on Windows, taking two weeks to get acquainted with Mac and you'll be many times more efficient which will very quickly make up for the time spent learning Mac. I hope I never have to use Windows again. - nicerobot
thomas, if you haven't tried this already: in thumbnail view, while holding down the shift button, select your group of photos by dragging the pointer across the photos you wish to select. you can jump to other thumbnails and perform the same operation in one by continuing to hold down the shift button - Cee Bee
@nicerobot - There would have to be a pretty big freaking carrot at the end of that stick for me to go through the kind of frustration I just had for more than an hour for two whole weeks!! I mean, someone would have to pay me or my career (or life) would have to depend on it. - Lindsay Donaghe
lindsay, the context menu depends on how you set up your trackpad. all it takes is a tap of the trackpad with two fingers ( go to keyboard and mouse in your system preferences and select tap trackpad using two fingers for secondary click under the trackpad tab) - Cee Bee
Thanks Cee Bee - I use Bootcamp for Windows on my MacBook pro so I'm actually familiar with the trackpad right-click. My adventures today were on my kid's Mac... he just has the good old Mighty Mouse with the right click... so it wasn't that I wasn't clicking correctly, it was just that there weren't context menus to display. - Lindsay Donaghe
Lindsay, the carrot is how much more productive and enjoyable your computing experience will be. I switched about 10 people, family and friends, to Mac over the past few years (started soon after I came around) and they all struggled and complained for days or weeks even, but now, every one of them thanks me, still, and they've told me they'll never go back to Windows. Take what you will. I used to completely love Windows. I knew Windows inside out and the Mac is ridiculously superior. - nicerobot

I was hesitant to purchase a laptop running Vista. Now, I honestly love it. - Corvida via twhirl
I am not sure I "love" it but it seems not much of an improvement over XP. Upgrading an existing machine though -- wouldn't do it in a million years. - Brian Sullivan
My desktop runs it. It is mostly OK. I've heard that it is supposed to be great for laptops. - RAPatton
So, when do I start hating it? It's not so bad so far... - Tad Donaghe
I love Vista! - Jasmin Smith
Vista's been an absolute champ for my wife and I. - Akiva Moskovitz
"when do I start hating it?" ? I did the CTP For RC-1 in sept last year and I was really not impressed with the OS. It very heavy weight and consumes a lot of memory. Plus the UAC is iffy.. plus the fact that you'll need a PhD in h/w to figre out what can be added or not .. ! - Peter Dawson
Tad, welcome to what happens when you DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. [stooping up and down like Flava Flav over here.] - Akiva Moskovitz
My laptop is running Vista and I haven't had any problems. It works well and is pretty responsive. It has some quirks like UAC but I could just turn it off if I really wanted. It doesn't get in the way that much really. Over all, I like Vista and haven't had any problems. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
Peter, believe it or not, the OS isn't the same as it was during CTP. They even have SP1 now which makes it even more stable and fast. - Akiva Moskovitz
I think Vista is great on a computer that was designed to run and work with Vista. - Sean Brady via twhirl
LOL! Welcome!! - Shey
My laptop runs XP. The big PC runs Vista. Vista is an attention whore. - Yolanda
I'm running this on my iMac in bootcamp mode. So far so good. - Tad Donaghe
Vista is great if you aren't a gamer, or into video or high end graphics editing. The OS just as performance problems. In terms of features and usability, I think it's wonderful. - Evan Sims
My 2-year-old 2ghz Sony VAIO with 1 meg of RAM runs Vista great. I did finally turn UAC off, though. And replaced the default firewall with ESET's Smart Security. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Evan I've played WoW with no problems on Vista. Plus, I routinely work in Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and Dreamweaver and have never been slowed down by it. I'm not sure what issues your having but in my experience, having Vista hasn't been a handicap GTD. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
I'm with Jason. I play some very graphically-intensive games with no loss of framerate. I also regularly use Photoshop, Indesign, Visual Studio 2008, as well as audio production software. No problems whatsoever. Something tells me that a lot of people are still rating Vista on its first-day-of-release performance and not how it is now. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Jason I'm not here to get into a Vista argument, but I speak from first hand experience as to the problems. I'm not an amateur at technology, and I develop games for a living. Besides my own experiences, I operate a guild of about 40 active people across multiple games, and not one individual who has tried Vista has been happy with it and kept it. WoW is not a high end game, and even it suffers a perf drop under Vista. There is a reason Vista has seen such a slow adoption rate in the gaming community. - Evan Sims
Akiva, vista is a crapfest = > http://peterdawson.typepad.com... , its not about how it was then or how it is now. When one is in deep incubation status with core technologies, these gut feels are echoed amongst the community. I have been tracking vista product long before it become longhorn , heres some more pointers = > http://peterdawson.typepad.com... - Peter Dawson
Peter, I don't care about your links or your attempt to steamroll your blanket 'crapfest' opinion. I know what I've seen with my own eyes. I have five machines running Vista, two of them 64-bit, and they are all as rock-solid, fast, and stable as XP. Every person I know who is running Vista are doing so without a problem and those who had problems were having hardware/driver issues which is common to ANY new OS (remember the XP nightmares?). - Akiva Moskovitz
I haven't had a chance to play with it...can't afford a new computer that can run it! I do want to be able to objectively compare the two. - Stephen Shores via twhirl
Definitely agree with Akiva. The only other complaint I hear besides driver issues is someone complaining that something moved to a new location. Though, I keep forgetting that it's "cool" to hate on Vista. - Jordan Hofker
Oh Well Akiva, its was Moishe Lettvin former developer at MSFT, who called it a "crapfest"... so its straight from the horse mouth ! Having said that, lets see how long will MSFT take to sunset this OS :)- - Peter Dawson
Peter, the development process for Vista was DEFINITELY a crapfest. It was a major embarrassment for a company who should be experienced enough to know better. What was delivered was an absolute disappointment compared to what was promised. But it, in its current shape, is still better than XP. Most people just still feel burned by how poorly it performed on release and, as Jordan so rightly points out, people don't like change (but they do love the trend of blindly hating Vista and Microsoft). - Akiva Moskovitz
I also think you're right on Vista's life expectancy being very low. As good as the OS is now, it'll probably never get over its initial stigma. I have very little hope for Win7, either. At first, I was excited when the rumor was that it was going to be based off of MinWin but now it looks like it's just going to be Vista Service Pack 2. Microsoft desperately needs its own OS X but it's too chickenshit to take the chance and virtualize legacy applications. Too bad, too. - Akiva Moskovitz
besides some minor ui annoyances, Vista is great. - Alan Le
MS has some awesome engineers and they have some really world-class software, but I totally agree with Akiva's "chickenshit" comment. They're stuck in a Catch 22 - they can't do an OS X for fear of pissing off their huge business customers, but at the same time they HAVE to innovate. They're being held back by 20+ years of success. It should be interesting to see what unfolds. - Tad Donaghe
After using Vista almost exclusively this past year, when I have to go back to XP I see how it's a step back. I do have one notebook running Vista that has a lingering driver/BIOS problem having to do with sleep, but on the three other Vista systems I use all Vista runs quite nicely (one 64-bit MacPro desktop, one Tablet PC, and a UMPC). - Loren Heiny
I'm not missing Windows at all after 2 years with my Macs. - Bill Sodeman
I'm a huge Mac fan too Bill. :) Running Vista on my iMac. Love both sides. - Tad Donaghe
I tried my best to give Vista a chance, but having to re-install it every few months has made me less than a fan. My laptop just can't get along with it. I don't know many people who haven't gone back to XP, so I can't even get help/advice on it anymore, since most of my geek friends refuse to go near it again. - Evangeline
I've refused to go to Vista. This is like Windows ME for me. I have a feeling the next one will be better after some lessons learned. - Ernie Oporto
Just did two pieces on it (Vista SP1) last week. Vista's here ... for most machines. Never thought I'd like it more than XP, but I really do - Charlie Anzman
I'm looking forward to your rants ;) - Mona N.
Wait for it... wait for it... - Lisa L. Seifert
I really, really like it when people are discussing the pros and cons of XP vs. Vista and someone has to come in to mention how they exclusively use Macs. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. - Akiva Moskovitz
@Akiva Mac Fanboys do more disservice to Apple then Microsoft marketing. Do you really want to be like "that person?" I can and have used both. Both have their pros and cons. Neither, IMO, is vastly superior. And Mac User Elitism is just freaking annoying. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
