That's the usage I've preferred for some years: If you're talking about one datum and another datum and another datum--the scientific usage--it's plural. If you're using it as a synonym for "information" or "stuff," it's a mass noun and takes the singular. (Personally, I try to avoid using it altogether.) - Walt Crawford
