Google Devalues Everything? Bwahahaha! - http://scienceblogs.com/clock...
OMG, the guy is so deeply wrong, it hurts! How do people get to be so stupid? Is it school? Atmosphere in the office? Polluted air? - Bora Zivkovic
um, which guy? I'm in the middle, but I get Daniel's points... - Christina Pikas
Daniel is clueless. Mike is trying to explain, but Daniel's worldview/mindset cannot comprehend it (yet, I hope). - Bora Zivkovic
I think part of it turns on the loaded meaning of "devalue". To some extent the WSJ is trying to say that google *reduces the monetary value*. The model of WSJ is that information is scarce and hard to find, hence derives value from its rarity. Google makes information widely available and easy to find, reducing the WSJ's value proposition. (I'm not saying I agree with the WSJ, I just think that's part of what he's trying to say.) In other words: "Google broke our business model, boo hoo". - Richard Akerman
Richard 10+ Mike explains it well - 'value' does not equal 'monetary value' - Bora Zivkovic
Richard, doesn't the WSJ logic, as you explain it, only work under zero-sum conditions? To get a smaller percentage of a much larger sum is exactly why people sign publishing deals. They're even wronger than it seems - instead of just wanting news to cost money again, they're moaning about the fact that news is a commodity! To think that the rhetorical flair employed during a report about the same stuff everyone else is reporting makes you worth more is just SO bizarre. - Mr. Gunn
