The idea behind Traacker is to find the people with the most clout so that you can target and track them. Using their Authority List, you can define campaign criteria with complex search conditions and keywords to narrow down the right people with the loudest and most influential voices online. The service then works to search the social web for content, sorting by authors and their associated performance data.

philosophically, advertising and social media are very different. Creatives, client services folks, account planners and the like are being asked to undertake a new method of communications that runs counter to everything they’ve ever been taught.
- Craig Ritchie
Love it. Similar to that, I always say, "Let's give the community the house, not the hammer." Too many brands are launching with empty tools, not using the tools themselves to give users a reason to engage.

Mind if I quote you on that? I'm speaking at the Florida Association of Museums on social media & most of my audience will not really know what social media is but have awareness they have to adapt to new communication styles to be/stay relevant. It's also a great analogy for cities - branding on distinctive lifestyle not just on creative class amenity buzzwords.
- Julia Gorzka
I intended to agree when I first read this but then I thought about actual branded bars and remembered that they almost always suck. They boil down to a giant ad with no soul. And most of the virtual branded bars (read: brand communities) feel like that.
- Johannes Kleske
Johannes, I think that's actually part of the takeaway (or at least, it should be). The best places to hang out are the ones that feel genuine, not the ones that suffer from so much kitsch or cool that it hurts. The same is true whether it's bars or communities.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Yeah, in the end for me it comes down to the question if a brand has heart and soul.

I don't update LinkedIn or Plaxo status, and I let Twitter update Facebook.

I could see some value in it. "What are you working on" helps define me from the linkedin/career perspective.

LinkedIn status updates = monthly (work-related project updates). Facebook status updates = weekly, occasional daily (what i'm up to, where i'm at). Twitter updates = daily / hourly (where i'm at, last geo change, what i'm reading).

from twhirl
Brian, if a baby learns to stand up and walk well over a 9 month period or approx 270 days, this would yield about 185 falls per day on average. I bet there's a logarithmic drop off of falls, however, but oh well. I've seen babies do a pop up and down thing early on which could easily skew the average. Anyway, 185 drops on ave does sound a little high, but it may be at the right...

Prioritize the most significant part of the page title first. The page title is the first thing people see in search results. Better for people scanning it to see the page subject rather than your site's name, in most cases. Use semantic markup for headings (h1, h2, etc) rather than styles because google may prioritize those terms. If you use images for navigation or headings, look into SEO friendly techniques for doing so. Don't stuff hidden text into the page. Read the google webmaster guidelines.

I think Mark's on the right track here -- maybe we just need to redeclare the MySpace field as a FriendFeed field across the board. That'll probably balance things out a bit better for almost everyone in this space...

If they got this tool right, added a bunch of social networks, FF, Flickr, Facebook, etc. and used more tools RSS subs, Technorati, etc. and then combined this with search terms it could be an excellent tool for PR professionals to use to gage who influencers are around their products. Right now it's too simplified a tool, but it's an interesting concept.
- Thomas Hawk
@Thomas, agreed. They do say they're working on adding more networks into the equation (today was just the first day of beta release). It's more a fun novelty than anything at the moment, but it could definitely have some broader and more practical uses down the road if it's developed right.

According to Twitter the numbers will be fluctuating over the next several days. They've stripped out a lot of spammers. I want a Techmeme without any business news. Just blog posts that make me smarter, or give me things to try. I think that's why I like FriendFeed so much. Far less "so and so buying so and so" kind of news, and more about "here's how to take a better picture" or "here's a new iPhone app."
Funny. I had an idea for another type of meme ... thinking of talking to Gabe and Atul Arora about it ...
- AJ Kohn
But still tech news (or heavily oriented that way). I would like even more specialized info and discussion -- like what is going on in F1 racing, the bicycle world or other subjects I am or could become interested in. I thought the rooms feature would do it but it doesn't cut it (or maybe the people here are just interested in things that interest me)
- Brian Sullivan
true. find news is easy. find useful post/article is really hard.
- Rafał Nowak
We need a SMARTER filtering services, I really need this kinda service, data flowing everywhere ... Yes Scoble, I love FF for the same reason, let me ask you, did u bookmark your fav. users ? ;)
- Alemsah Ozturk
Brian: those will happen when FF grows. Right now the feature set here is retarding its growth. They are rewriting the backend so they can add new features to let us talk to the database in new ways. WHen that happens it'll take off in growth again and bring in less geeky kinds of people.
- Robert Scoble
Alemsah: nope, I don't bookmark anything. There's way too many to bookmark at this point. And I refresh so often that I see all good stuff anyway.
- Robert Scoble
Have you spent much time on Twine, Robert? I get the impression they're tackling this problem--in their own way, of course.
- Ken Sheppardson
we're trying to do that with Regator... although we do have business in there, there is much more to it and it doesn't dominate unless it is really top news in the whole blogosphere. We are working to make quality blogs and interesting posts accessible for average people as well as tech geeks... some people just don't care that twitter bought summize - can you believe it??? hit me up for a login if you are interested in taking a look. Please forgive the fairly blatant plug. :)
- Scott Lockhart
Twine is more of the semantic analysis/social news thing. Also has a "grouping" mechanism, but it is user driven. I think we are talking about techmeme for tech blogs here.
- Rob Diana
My biggest problem is still redundancy; I'm not subscribed to that many people here (relatively) and even so I'll still see the same story linked five times, if not the same outright link. The next Google will be the guys who can nail personalization, recommendation, and filtering, as well as a sort of aggregation of conversation by topic. So far no one has gotten even close. FF might, but it's still got a ways to go.
- Eric P
Ken: I have to spend some time on Twine. I should have done that long ago. You like it?
- Robert Scoble
What if a search engine or filtering system, similar to summize for FF ?
- Alemsah Ozturk
hey eric, did you hear twitter acquired summize??? about a million times.
- Craig Ritchie
from twhirl
I definitely still hope rooms take off as the diversity of folks (from an interests point of view) grows. I'm with Brian though in looking for more interaction on other topics beyond the hot tech and social media world...
- Gus Perez
Scoble : did you use feedhub for rss feeds. Basicly, it creates a personalized RSS feed from your RSS feeds .. And it learns with your help (you say I like this one, it changes the algorithm so on...) Would it be nice if similar idea can be applied to FF ?
- Alemsah Ozturk
If "editorializing by algorithms" then you need criteria for what is important; what would be the criteria? how about leveraging likes ? still fixing and open to suggestions :http://www.thredr.com/
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Rebecca: I just looked at Gyzork. It's worse than TechMeme. Less useful stuff and even more regular old news. Sorry, that's what http://news.google.com is for and it doesn't have an awful name, either. Alemsah: too much work. Never will take off, sorry. Needs to be easy for lazy types.
- Robert Scoble
This is why I started reading magazines again!
- David Weiner
Hey guys. This is pretty close to what we're trying to do at socialmedian. The idea is collaborative filtering at the topical level, wiki-like scaling to an infinite # of topics. We call topic-based networks, "News Networks" and anyone can create one and bring in feeds, posts, and people to track, share, and discuss news of interest. We then add an additional layer/filter by enabling people to follow "Newsmakers." It's a tough problem to solve: Turn the volume up and turn it down at the same time.
- Jason Goldberg
Robert: have you checked out SocialMedian.com? Its coming out of alpha now. It lets you enter the topics and the sources you want -- In effect, its a customizable Techmeme.
- Christian Anderson
I like friendfeed because it does a pretty good job with sharing photos and videos, not just text. I've been experimenting with the open source twitter client, Witty, to add videos, drawings, and photos for this reason too. I think friendfeed activity also suggests that TechMeme is going to need to add comments if it wants to keep current.
- Loren Heiny
Christian: I just got added to SocialMedian yesterday, will try it out.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: i too am interested in the "this is cool" type stuff. that seems to be what is popular on socialmedian. I'm still playing with how to create a really tight "news network" for essentially engadget for web 2.0. Setting up the specific topics like iPhone apps is easy. setting one up around "how to take a better picture" is harder.
- Christian Anderson
Robert: We enable people on socialmedian to fully customize their news networks to include all types of sources (e.g. business news, blogs, etc., or just a few favorite feeds). Up to you. It's far from perfect yet but getting better by the day thanks to awesome feedback from our alpha users.
- Jason Goldberg
Jason: All we know how good SocialMedian is! ; ) Great job, congrats again!
- Erhan Erdogan
Erhan Erdogan are you on socialmedian? best you could do if you want to help us is let me/us know 3 areas we're f*cking up
- Jason Goldberg
Robert: RE Twine... I'm just beginning to take a serious look at it. I like the concept of joining affinity/interest groups and having members pool links to resources they come across, but it's not clear to me yet how/if it differs much from a social bookmarking system with tags, tag clusters, etc.
- Ken Sheppardson
Although there have been about a million "so and so buying so and so" posts on FF today
- James Joyner
that's kind of what i turn to reddit, digg, and fark for.

I want a site like Techmeme, but with a way to buy books. You can't read news all the time -- you need books too. Maybe that's why I'm always going to amazon.com.
- Gabe Rivera
Regator.com is in private beta right now, but I want to do a friendfeed experiment (even though this thread is a little old now). I have just created 30 invites that will use the code friendfeed. Just go to www.regator.com and pop in the invite code and see what you think of our site. Its definitely not Techmeme but take a look and see what you think. We're eager to get your feedback on what sucks and what rocks and what is just kinda okay. I will put this on my feed as well and see what happens... :)
- Scott Lockhart
But that's what Lifehacker is for! ;) Of course, I may be biased.
- Tamar Weinberg
@Gabe: Why not develop a bookmeme site then. I'll gladly help.
- AJ Kohn
@AJKohn - I would be more than happy to handover the domain you may be alluding to (in your comments up above) Gabe if he is interested in using it.
- Atul Arora
Techmeme has lost for me a long time ago. I hope that someone builds a newspaper view out of someone's personal friendfeed homepage (in effect a personalized, subscriptions-based techmeme)
- Meryn Stol
The obit section of a paper is the most sensitive, and a big target for libel or defamaiton suits, since they want it done right the first time (aka only time). Having worked at a paper, it's interesting the interns usually do it. That they spent so much effort on the iconography here as well is not a surprise.
- Louis Gray
Very cool seeing some of that process ...

Good perspective. I'm hard pressed to feel sorry for a company with that much potential that doesn't even know who they are or what they do. I think that, before they do ANYTHING, they have to establish once again what Yahoo is. Right now, they're sounding like Microsoft when they were first trying to define what .Net was.
- Bradley McSpinn
Agreed. They squandered an opportunity to take their team(s) to a new level. Should've seen Microhoo as a challenge, not an obituary.
- Sprague D
I do feel sorry a little bit, even if they didn't manage to do one thing right in the last few years, maybe because I followed them since almost day 1 and because once the MS bid was announced it was obvious that it's The End.
- Naor Mark
@Craig - I really don't think so. I mean, we all understand its implementation, but as for a definition? Not so much. The same is true for Yahoo. I know it's there, I know what it does...but it doesn't mean that I see any real value in it.
- Bradley McSpinn
Can someone please put me in charge there? I would clean house and get them focused on some kind of core business.
- Shawn Farner
Agreed, Robert. I've got some friends working on very cool stuff whether it's startups, VC, or bigger roles at smaller companies. The Yahoos I worked with are smart, creative, talented professionals. We're going to see some great innovation coming from Yahoo alumni soon. P.S. Glad you like our idea ;)

Microsoft is a terrible business - we need a little sympathy for Yahoo. Slow extinction or being taken over by MS are hardly rich options. And it's hard to trigger the sense of crisis to fire your board.

I could never understand why Yahoo had any value from the beginning. It suprises me little that they in a downward spiral.
- Brian Sullivan
Whether Microsoft gets Yahoo! or Yahoo! merges with someone else (read Time Warner or MySpace) it will be good for search in general and hopefully create an entity that can challenge Google in a meaningful way
- gregory
I don't understand *why* Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo. Yahoo can't even figure out what they are. E-mail? Search engine? Social service? Not to mention the only thing that is lucrative is the search engine. The only way I can see someone benefit from buying Yahoo is if they completely re-vamp what Yahoo does, focus on one category and, market it!
- Candace
yahoo jumped the shark when it started being proud of releasing of the YUI libraries. companies that start treating 'helper tools' as if they were new functionality are on the downward side of the curve.
- MikeAmundsen
@Mike, as a developer, the YUI libraries and developer tools are where the value of YHOO resides for me. I don't personally use any of their consumer products.
- Sprague D
@Sprague D, question - does YUI increase your use of YHOO content/data? or do you use it primarily for your own content/data? my question is aimed at the monetary benefits accrued to YHOO from YUI. I see solid benefits from YHOO's work on Squid, but not YUI.
- MikeAmundsen
Mike, I use their tools in projects that don't leverage their data or content. Point taken.
- Sprague D
YUI libraries are the only thing worthwhile coming from that wretched place.
- Patrick Sweeney
What kills me most about Yahoo is that they had so many of the most interesting and exciting places to go on the internet but then never fully realized that potential. I still can't believe that they paid Terry Semel more money than any CEO in the US in 2006 for such a miserable failure of a job. Pure stupidity. The board that oversaw that needs to go.
- Thomas Hawk
But can you imagine a Microsoft owned Flickr..?
- Sheila Thomson
I'm constantly amazed at how many CEO's get paid for bad jobs. And how often the board will cut employee salaries but not their own. Just look at the disaster at AT&T during the 90s: http://moourl.com/odp4g
