Mind if I quote you on that? I'm speaking at the Florida Association of Museums on social media & most of my audience will not really know what social media is but have awareness they have to adapt to new communication styles to be/stay relevant. It's also a great analogy for cities - branding on distinctive lifestyle not just on creative class amenity buzzwords.

I intended to agree when I first read this but then I thought about actual branded bars and remembered that they almost always suck. They boil down to a giant ad with no soul. And most of the virtual branded bars (read: brand communities) feel like that.

Johannes, I think that's actually part of the takeaway (or at least, it should be). The best places to hang out are the ones that feel genuine, not the ones that suffer from so much kitsch or cool that it hurts. The same is true whether it's bars or communities.

Brian, if a baby learns to stand up and walk well over a 9 month period or approx 270 days, this would yield about 185 falls per day on average. I bet there's a logarithmic drop off of falls, however, but oh well. I've seen babies do a pop up and down thing early on which could easily skew the average. Anyway, 185 drops on ave does sound a little high, but it may be at the right...

Make sure content has a unique url that accurately describes the content, unique titles, unique descriptions, make sure the content matches the url which matches the title. Don't use tables when you don't need to, don't replicate content at other urls if you can help it. Write interesting and compelling content, then get people to link to you! Easy as pie ;)

Prioritize the most significant part of the page title first. The page title is the first thing people see in search results. Better for people scanning it to see the page subject rather than your site's name, in most cases. Use semantic markup for headings (h1, h2, etc) rather than styles because google may prioritize those terms. If you use images for navigation or headings, look into SEO friendly techniques for doing so. Don't stuff hidden text into the page. Read the google webmaster guidelines.

Say really nice things about Matt Cutts' Cat on Seesmic. get with a provider who "gets" organic, and paid search as well as up-to-date social media and IWOM--better be someone who knows IWOM as well as you with your gift for link baiting. And hire a crew that optimizes for foreign content even if you don't have immediate plans to expand into markets like China.

I think Mark's on the right track here -- maybe we just need to redeclare the MySpace field as a FriendFeed field across the board. That'll probably balance things out a bit better for almost everyone in this space...

If they got this tool right, added a bunch of social networks, FF, Flickr, Facebook, etc. and used more tools RSS subs, Technorati, etc. and then combined this with search terms it could be an excellent tool for PR professionals to use to gage who influencers are around their products. Right now it's too simplified a tool, but it's an interesting concept.

I lost about 70! Most that I got within the last 3 weeks! Also lost some that did not exchanged Tweets recently also lost the Spam bots, which I never followed! They restored the database which is 3 weeks old!

According to Twitter the numbers will be fluctuating over the next several days. They've stripped out a lot of spammers. I find it hard to believe 700 of my 2200 followers were spammers though... but, like I say, those numbers may not be an accurate count. I'm still a loyal fan - won't be dumping Twitter .. yet. ;)

My biggest problem is still redundancy; I'm not subscribed to that many people here (relatively) and even so I'll still see the same story linked five times, if not the same outright link. The next Google will be the guys who can nail personalization, recommendation, and filtering, as well as a sort of aggregation of conversation by topic. So far no one has gotten even close. FF might, but it's still got a ways to go.

Scoble : did you use feedhub for rss feeds. Basicly, it creates a personalized RSS feed from your RSS feeds .. And it learns with your help (you say I like this one, it changes the algorithm so on...) Would it be nice if similar idea can be applied to FF ?

Hey guys. This is pretty close to what we're trying to do at socialmedian. The idea is collaborative filtering at the topical level, wiki-like scaling to an infinite # of topics. We call topic-based networks, "News Networks" and anyone can create one and bring in feeds, posts, and people to track, share, and discuss news of interest. We then add an additional layer/filter by enabling people to follow "Newsmakers." It's a tough problem to solve: Turn the volume up and turn it down at the same time.

I like friendfeed because it does a pretty good job with sharing photos and videos, not just text. I've been experimenting with the open source twitter client, Witty, to add videos, drawings, and photos for this reason too. I think friendfeed activity also suggests that TechMeme is going to need to add comments if it wants to keep current.

Robert: i too am interested in the "this is cool" type stuff. that seems to be what is popular on socialmedian. I'm still playing with how to create a really tight "news network" for essentially engadget for web 2.0. Setting up the specific topics like iPhone apps is easy. setting one up around "how to take a better picture" is harder.

The obit section of a paper is the most sensitive, and a big target for libel or defamaiton suits, since they want it done right the first time (aka only time). Having worked at a paper, it's interesting the interns usually do it. That they spent so much effort on the iconography here as well is not a surprise.

Good perspective. I'm hard pressed to feel sorry for a company with that much potential that doesn't even know who they are or what they do. I think that, before they do ANYTHING, they have to establish once again what Yahoo is. Right now, they're sounding like Microsoft when they were first trying to define what .Net was.

Microsoft is a terrible business - we need a little sympathy for Yahoo. Slow extinction or being taken over by MS are hardly rich options. And it's hard to trigger the sense of crisis to fire your board.

Whether Microsoft gets Yahoo! or Yahoo! merges with someone else (read Time Warner or MySpace) it will be good for search in general and hopefully create an entity that can challenge Google in a meaningful way

I don't understand *why* Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo. Yahoo can't even figure out what they are. E-mail? Search engine? Social service? Not to mention the only thing that is lucrative is the search engine. The only way I can see someone benefit from buying Yahoo is if they completely re-vamp what Yahoo does, focus on one category and, market it!

yahoo jumped the shark when it started being proud of releasing of the YUI libraries. companies that start treating 'helper tools' as if they were new functionality are on the downward side of the curve.

I still can't believe that they paid Terry Semel more money than any CEO in the US in 2006 for such a miserable failure of a job. Pure stupidity. The board that oversaw that needs to go.
