iPhone 3G will not restore - "The iPhone cannot be used with iTunes because the information required for activation could not be obtained from the iPhone. Check that the SIM card is inserted in your iPhone and that it is not PIN-locked." I did, and I even went to AT&T to replace the SIM. Fucked!!!
iphone 1.0 here still. glad i didn't upgrade :)
- Chris Harris
Apple needs to just put up its own towers and have the iPhone on its own network. Its like putting 3rd party ram in a Mac, its nothing but problems :P
- Scott
That SUCKS. So far, my 3G has been working fine. :D
- joey@jwvmods.com
Unlucky man, as Justin pointed out, it may be worth going into an Apple store and see what they say.
- Gaurav Patel
Have you tried DFU mode? I had this happen to me and it was guessed to be a bad sector on the flash drive. Apple will replace it... they did for me.
- Douglas Porter
from twhirl
I've had nothing but problems with the iPhone 3G. Fail!
- Matt Singley
I was considering getting a new iPhone but after this and all the other fiascos...maybe I'll hold out for the new touchscreen BlackBerry.
- RottNKorpse
You've just been the worst case iphone scenario Chris from the beginning.. hope it gets straightened out!
- Eric Gonzalez
Did you do anything *other* than install and remove 3rd party apps on the thing the entire time you've owned it? From what I've witnessed you downloaded and installed every app in the store. Your usage certainly isn't typical. And you really shouldn't be dealing with the AT&T store for an Apple hardware product. For one, the service at Apple is 1000 times better.
- Adam Turetzky
Daamn... Hearing this just makes me NOT want to buy the iPhone any more. It's like the cursed phone. I think you have an isolated problem Chris, because I haven't head of this anywhere else.
- Oliver
You may want to try Leo's fix. Format, start from scratch and then only install Apps from iTunes. Just a suggestion. It worked for most of my friends at school when I told them.
- Zane
One of the things I would do is delete every app you have on the phone (other than what it came with of course) and start over again from scratch. Go little at a time reintroducing the apps to your phone, until you get to the ones that may be causing trouble. As someone else pointed out, you've been downloading and trying out alot of apps. Many of them have proved buggy. Maybe just start over again and don't put apps back for awhile.
- Lisa Lee
force restore, done by holding home button while connecting the USB end of chord to computer. Before doing this make sure your phone is completely off ( press and hold sleep/wake button until you see "slide to power off") You should be prompted "iTunes has detected nameofiPhone in recovery mode and needs to restore" click ok then restore

My brother is "addicted" to WoW. Should something be done about that? He's 17 and not interested in driving, jobs, or school.... just World of Warcraft!
Sounds just like the pot commercials from the 90s. 'Cept is WoW instead of pot. Watch out for an afterschool special sometime soon!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
how does he pay for his subscription?
- Justin Long
I pay as long as he keeps getting A's, which he does.
- Robert Scoble
Two friends in their 20's are beyond salvage. Barely hanging to their jobs. Un-cool
- embee
WoW is dangerous. It's the time committment that they start adapting to.
- Michael
i read once that those kinds of games are addictive because they do stimulate two areas of the brain - fighting and exploring - that were highly important in the development of our species and remain stimulate-able today. i love call of duty 4 multiplayer but only allow myself about 30 minutes a day tops, and some days only one round.
- Justin Long
This is your brain ... This is your brain on WoW ...
- Clarence Chiang
It'll work itself out. We have all had some phases of our lives that we have moved past. If he's still doing it in his 30's I would be worried. :)

yeah if nothing else eventually hormones will kick in... :) :)

I found that WoW polished my analytical and mediation skills but it didn't exactly leave me with a record of performance that I could point to later. As long as your brother exercises daily and socializes outside of the house on a weekly basis he'll be okay.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I don't think you need to put addicted in quotes. Game playing is highly rewarding and you can become addicted to any reward source. It might make sense to treat it like an addiction.
- Todd Hoff
He can beat his addiction, but like anyone, he has to want to. But have hope - Felicia Day used to be addicted to WoW and she put that to good use - witness the success of 'The Guild' (http://www.watchtheguild.com/)!
- WorldofHiglet
Yeah, limiting the time in-game is really important, even if the kid's acing school. For me, personally, maintaining great grades would not be enough. I don't find anything at all wrong with regular play. It's play like anything else, but you've got to mix it up. Too much of anything...
- abacab
Hit the bars with him and/or party with some pretty girls and/or dope/shrooms ... will forget about the stupid thing in 1-2 hours. If u r in the US - and all of the things listed above(except girls) are illegal - that will be even more interesting for him. Or some books, like Bukowski, Hemingway, etc
- obz
For the record, I'm a gamer who runs my own gaming community. We focus more on Console games, but the addiction qualities are found in both types of gaming. You have to find the balance between gaming and the rest of your life. How much does he play a day?
- Michael
People like that, end up living in their parents basements and anti-social their whole life. Trust me, I know a few people like that.
- Scott
Czar, I can find some service projects in Hburg for him to get him out of the house ;)

make him earn the money he needs to pay internet + WOW subscription... Worked for a couple of cases of WoW addiction I knew of.
- Marcos Marado
There are some benefits to playing WoW. However, like all things, it's best in moderation.
- Arlan Koizumi
if you ask me, wow is only addicting to people who have a reason to be addicted. same with all addictions really?

@Cyndy - Good to know adults too do that :)

Biscuits on a Sunday morning will calm you.

clean it up to cool yourself :) I remember chucking my wristwatch across the room, fortunately it came out of it without a scratch!
- Rahul Das
@Russel - It's Sunday evening here, and a cricket match was involved.
- Yuvi
When you're as unflappable as me, you never let that kind of stuff get to you. Besides, I'm always breaking things.
- Pete Delucchi
Yuvi - I thought about that, but it is Sunday here and Mom made the best biscuits. My wife struggle to get it right until she asked mom for the secret. Crisco lard.
- Russellreno
@Russel - Our biscuits are packaged :) And, given the fact we are (possibly) on the opposite sides of the same planet, I'm not even sure my biscuit is the same as your biscuit :)
- Yuvi
lol, I assume responsibility as Anglo-American translator again. The American "biscuit" is, as far as I can tell, something akin to the English scone or the Scots bannock. In the US, biscuits are often served with gravy, in England, they are eaten with cream and jam and a cup of tea by old ladies in seaside tea shops :-). I imagine that in India, the biscuit is the same as in England. In America, this is a cookie. Cookies are eaten by blue monsters with googly eyes.
- Slappy Line
I have broke a few cell phones that way, good excuse to get a new one :P
- Scott
@Viki - Well, Cookies *AND* cream, 'coz they are called 'cream biscuits' here :D
- Yuvi
Me break something out of anger? Hardly. I'm too cheap to pay for a new one. :D @Slippy: Bannock is a Scottish thing? Good to know; we made it every day on trail last summer, canoeing.
- Voyagerfan5761
Those are so different it depends on your mood. Only you can choose. For me, Americanos if I am in a hurry and don't have time to steam milk. I've never bought one from Starbucks

and how do you open them without cutting yourself... "Emo?" "-No, gadgets..."
- Jemm
Zibra Open-It -- have used them for the last year and they are great to open all types of packaging - especially the super solid plastic - there's also a built in knife and screw driver tips. They're cheap too (got mine at Home Depot for around $20-ish) - http://preview.tinyurl.com/5kg7km
- Wayne Schulz
With a box knife and then end up cutting your self because the knife slipped from the hard plastic.
- Scott
I've invested in a good set of kitchen shears. They'll cut through just about anything.
- Brent Newhall
I've thought for a while that the solution to our drug problems would be to legalize everything but require that they be sold in the plastic packaging you are referencing - I am pretty certain that illicit drug usage rates would plummet overnight
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Avoid buying products that come in plastic shell packaging. If we all do that, manufacturers will switch to another method of packaging.
- Morton Fox
Scissors...very carefully. BTW, this is the bane of retail packaging...absolutely hideous and totally NOT green ...augh!

It really ticks me off. 1.Most of it is an unnecessary waste. 2. I've cut my fingers open on some of it before now. I'm never one for needless litigation, but I'm surprised no-one has sued for injury before now; if a woman can sue for tipping coffee over herself, I'm sure someone could for injury sustained opening some of these things!

Mac OS X at home because I love Unix but got tired of trying to make my soundcard work correctly with Linux. (I've since come to love OS X in its own right: it's a very well designed, consistent OS. And I heart Objective-C/Cocoa). Windows XP at home. Because we're a Microsoft shop through and through.

Windows XP because it came with my laptop and I already had Linux desktop when I got it. I also do music, so I had Pro Tools on here at one point.

Various Linux distros with KDE. Linux is great for my relatively older machines, supports a wide variety of hardware that is no longer supported by other OSes, has much customizability, is great on RAM usage, the KDE desktop is much more usuable than any other I've tried (much more than Explorer), freedom, it has the applications that I love, and so on and so on.
- Jake (aka Jawee)
Actually, I only really need to dig for RPMs on OpenSUSE. Fedora and Ubuntu have the repositories that I need.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I only use DOS 6.1 cause I'm badass like that.
- Tad
@possible248: OpenSUSE has the worst selection in the repositories. Ubuntu and Mandriva are both great (my main Linux distros atm).
- Jake (aka Jawee)
Ubuntu because its simpler than Mona N :)

The basic idea behind KDE is choice. GNOME's philosophy is that the user cannot be trusted with decision. KDE still isn't that tough to use. I love it. :D
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
As a work at home freelance software developer and tech writer, I have to go where there is demand or else I go unemployed. So I use Win XP, Vista, Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS and SuSE), Solaris and Mac OS X. For my day to day personal use, I choose Mac OS X.

I just don't get how Mac OSX users use the dock. A task bar just makes more sense (to me).

MacOS X, with a RedHat Enterprise system to ssh into.

@possible248: I'll ignore your flame bait and mention that on Linux, I prefer KDE over GNOME, for the same reason you mention. :-) I haven't tried 4.1 yet, probably will try to upgrade this weekend.

Oh, and I don't use the dock, I use Quicksilver.
- Dread Pirate PJ
OS X. Lazy...it's preinstalled on my Mac.

Linux (Ubuntu) primarily, but also some OpenSolaris. I won't get into the GNOME/KDE debate -- those of us in what is sadly the OS minority need to unite for the greater good. :-) I have to use Windows for some of my DayJob tasks.

XP, Vista, Ubuntu. Vista because it came with the laptop, XP by choice, Ubuntu for server or network play.

Hehe. Flamebait. I think Linus Torvalds backs up my point pretty well (http://mail.gnome.org/archive...). I find the responses of the Mac users interesting. I love the shiny look of Apple hardware, but haven't been able to bring myself to cough up the change for one.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Linuxes, Windows, OSX, as different needs arise.

Ubuntu Linux (desktop) and Debian GNU/Linux (server) because I love apt-get. Windows XP inside of a VMWare-Player guest... does that count? lol

True that it's slow, while watching the FriendFeed page I see around 2 min. delay between actually receiving posts. Thwirl I really like for design and concept. But for the network-capabilities, it could maybe do better.

I like twhirltles. Twhirl is my favorite.
- Bwana ☠
It's currently the only way to get desktop notifications of @replies in identica on the mac. I'd love for an active Mac OS X native application that implemented these microblogging/status update services at the same speed that Friendfeed implements them. Maybe then I'd stop using just Twitter.
- Mark Trapp
I deleted it some time ago. The view was not worth the climb.
- Phil Yanov
I'm not the world's biggest Twhirl fan by any means. I think they've been completely unresponsive to new development since Seesmic bought it. Before that happened, you could actually get a reply from the developer and updates were frequent. Since then, updates have become far less frequent and I don't know the last time I've had a response to a tweet about issues. But, in Twhirl's defense, it isn't any uglier than any other app available. And you can skin it, so if it's ugly, it's your own fault.
- Gregory Pittman
from twhirl
I don't like it either, can't match Twitterific.
- Oli Kenobi
I've used Twhirl more than most AIR apps, but that's not saying much.

- Marc Vermut

My biggest complaint is that it's a RAM hog. It also occasionally beachballs on me, but I'm guessing that's related to my first point.
- Kevin Johnson
from twhirl
Twitterrific and TwitterFox do the job for me. Twhirl's interface just irritates me.
- Andrew Trinh
The scrolling behavior annoyed the heck out of me, but maybe I missed a magic key combo. I want it to work like Google Reader, where it always scrolls the next item to the top of the window. Twhirl scrolls to the next item that's not completely visible in the window when using the scroll wheel or down arrow. This always threw me off, so I stopped using it. A combined window is also sorely needed. Tabs would be ok but an option for a single view of all services intermixed would be best.
- invariant - farewell FF
nope. me too. i would assume everybody using windows effectivly (not that that are many people) do not like the interface as it is very counterintuitive to what makes windows fast and efficient to work with.
- Nicole Simon
I agree Thirl needs some extra work, especially when it comes to scrolling in FriendFeed - but I stick to it to give them time to improve it. Hopefully they will until I start to believe all the haters here.
- Svetlana Gladkova
from twhirl
Man, Twhirl is terrible. It won't stay open more than about 5 minutes for me. It never notifies me. Every interface I've seen using Air requires too much relearning. The standard web page interface for FriendFeed works much better.
- Richard Crocker
Yeah, I installed it thinking "Hey, what a great way to keep up with FF" Hell no! It's awful and the scrolling is so jerky! But I do like the notifications...
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
I'm a fan of Twhirl, but then, I'm biased. I work with Marco (the developer of twhirl) at Seesmic. A number of the issues mentioned here are very frustrating shortfalls of the AIR platform (that we're eager to discover workarounds for.) FWIW, I can tell you that we are very interested in the option for a single window view. I would love to hear any feedback at thomas@seesmic dot com
- Thomas Knoll
Thomas, glad to see you here. It's always good to hear from the developer. That used to be a huge plus for Twhirl. But that stopped suddenly when Seesmic bought Twhirl. That's a shame. You're correct in saying that some of the bugs listed here are AIR bugs, over which you have no control. But some of them--the spastic jumping around, for example--are not AIR bugs. They're all Twhirl's. And we haven't heard any explanation and there have been seemingly no attempts to fix it.
- Gregory Pittman
from twhirl
Hey Gregory, sorry, the past months have been full of coding work, and I have to admin, my responsiveness to user questions wasn't as good as it should be. Apologies, I'll try to catch up on that. As you mention the jumping windows bug, it is indeed a problem of the AIR platform, not twhirl's. We are trying to find ways to avoid it, and as our tests show, it has become better, but we are not fully able to work around it yet.

Is this incomplete, or is Starbucks really only closing shops on the west coast?
- Mark Trapp
There's a dropdown menu for particular states :)
- Mona Nomura
That's silly. If you zoom out on the map, it shows the west on the California map, but nothing else on the east coast. If you select New York, it shows Ohio Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New England. Why? What's the point of a google maps mashup if you can't use the map to see all the data? Or why have information for other states on state specific maps?
