The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is working on three of the most ambitious projects in its history just now. These multicycle treasury programs are using Hubble's unique ability to observe across the spectrum from ultraviolet, through visible, to infrared light, to build up a library of data which will serve astronomers for many years. This extraordinary color film traces the role of the submariners -- known as the Silent Service -- during World War II in the Pacific. The film begins with a short film-within-the-film featuring Japan's Fleet Admiral Nagano expressing his belief that American submarines crippled the Japanese Imperial Navy. The film goes on to show the construction and manning of fleet type submarines, and some of the astonishing campaigns they waged in the Pacific Theater. The island is bombarded from sea and air. Japanese shipping and airfields and factories in Japan are bombed and strafed. Consists mostly of the fleets three-month defense against Kamikaze attacks intended to isolate U.S. troops on the island. Many Kamikaze planes are destroyed and others crash on or near their targets. Tells the tale of a real life strike by Mexican-American miners. The story is set in a remote New Mexico town where the workers live in a company town in company owned shacks without basic plumbing. Put at risk by cost cutting bosses, the miners strike for safe working conditions. As the strike progresses the issues at stake grow beyond that, driven by the workers' wives. At first the wives are patronized by the traditional patriarchical culture, however they assert themselves as equals and an integral part of the struggle, calling for improved sanitation and dignified treatment. Ultimately, when the bosses win a court order against the workers preventing them from demonstrating gender roles reverse with the wives taking over the picket line and preventing scab workers from being brought in while the husbands stay at home and take care of house and children. A recent NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image captures what appears to be one very bright and bizarre galaxy, but is actually the result of a pair of spiral galaxies, like our own Milky Way, smashing together at incredible speeds.
