I do think Apps are different than music because you can obviously preview the music and you assume it is 'production quality'. What if you downloaded a song you paid for to find out its at 32kbps or in mono?
- Chris Ridenour
I used to have scores of funny (not that useful) apps on my jailbroken 1.4 iPhone, on my new 3G I'm only at ~10 fairly useful apps - what is your top20?
- Bo Stern
How might such a script decide if a person on Twitter is the same person on identi.ca?
- Rah-PM 2012
@Rahsheen Porter username is about the only way. i don't think you can grab emails from their API's
- Chris Harris
Rahsheen - InternetDuctTape already has a Twitter to Friendfeed import program. I used it several months ago. Had a little overload to clean up but overall it was GREAT
- Charlie Anzman
I would have thought Hutch Carpenter and Louis Gray would have had this covered already. Where's Pat Hawks ??
- Charlie Anzman
I like jason's link but I don't agree with his commentary. Arrington declared war after all.
- Alan Le
maybe this is just one example of something duncan didn't like that caused him to leave. if he produces a blue dress "dug" by MA, ima hurl.
- Brooks Bayne
OOooooo touched a nerve there Duncan!
- Susan Beebe
Jason, I didn't "attack" anybody, I simply aksed, on my personal blog, that given that I was cut off, why they kept begging me for Diggs, a reasonable question. Point out exactly where I attacked anyone Jason?
- Duncan Riley
I have no horse in this race but I do find it interesting that Jason attacks the whistleblower and not the person actually committing the "crime".( Hmmm.
- chartreuse
I'm a bit surprised that TC is still implementing a Digg Army. It's not uncommon to have a group of folks who will Digg stories for you or your site. But it seems like a strategy for a up and coming site, not a well established one. Duncan himself did say that Arrington was one of the hardest working guys he's met. So ... perhaps Mike just isn't resting on his laurels - which isn't a bad thing. I do wonder whether Duncan asked to be removed prior to posting this shot.
- AJ Kohn
ahem can we leave the high school lunch room yet?
- Fred Grott
AJ, Michael told me never to email him again, so I couldn't asked to be removed. Writing a blog post was my only alternative to being spammed.
- Duncan Riley
@Duncan: Understood and that does make (some) sense. I'm a fan Duncan and clearly don' t know all the ins and outs. But ... to be fair, could you have emailed Biggs or Ha direct?
- AJ Kohn
Biggs had a hissy fit that I was at Macworld for TechCrunch, and I've never spoken to him since. Ha I don't know. Besides, they weren't sending the emails individually, it was a group email to diggthis@techcrunch.com
- Duncan Riley
Duncan, you should be a politician the way you're trying to spin that post as a way to stop spam. :-P You definitely could have emailed another TC or CG writer and they would have passed the message on. You can't tell me you write about social networks and couldn't find one to contact someone on.
- Shawn Farner
Shawn, I believe that ultimately they may have still wanted my Diggs, why else would I have been cut off from all the other email lists but not that one. But I'll note again: I didn't attack them in the post, I simply made an observation (calacanis links to Valleywag, not my post). Trust me, if I was going to attack them, this wouldn't be it. I've never been known for subtlety :-)
- Duncan Riley
@Duncan: Makes sense. Me, I don't see a problem with the post. Sort of a don't do anything you wouldn't want to see in print type of scenario. Crowd-Digging isn't anything new. Hope you're off the diggthis list ;)
- AJ Kohn
I appreciate Duncan's defense but personally I would just come out and say - I'm trying to make TC look like dicks. No one would blame you :)
- Chris Ridenour
I'll put it this way - Duncan's the only guy from TC that ever treated me like I was a human from the time I started at Mashable on. After I signed on with Pete, someone at TC went thru and forensically removed all my comments from before I joined, removed references to my personal blog from CrunchGear (they blogged about me a couple times), and generally let us know at Mash thru the grapevine what they thought of us (it isn't very nice stuff).....
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
... Duncan never participated in that foolishness, and I've always appreciated that. MA declared war first with Duncan, so if he wants to play the game, he can't be too upset when things like this crop up. In short, Duncan's been nothing but classy, in my book. I won't participate in this particular blogfite officially, but I will refute Jason's position that this is indicative of Duncan's class.
- Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
I know nothing about nothing, BUT it is usually not cool to air dirty laundry in public. TC could be secret Nazis but it still doesn't look good to say that you can't email them or reveal company tactics.
- Andrew
Jason - do you consider what you are doing to DEMO attacks? Pot meet Kettle.
- Mark Lepzig
Thx Mark. Andrew, honestly, I wrote a post the other day with my last thoughts on the matter and that was going to be the end of it, then I noticed one of my inboxes getting fuller as I was trying to clean them up (I have more email rules + boxes then friends on FF :-) ). I just like their hide though: slam me in private, then expect me to digg them. I'll give Michael credit, he has balls. Any further spam aside though, consider this my last on the matter.
- Duncan Riley
Save the date! Tomorrow night. 11 PM Eastern, 8 PM Pacific, 1 PM Saturday the 5th in Melbourne. 4th of July with one American, one Aussie, and one Canuck. There will probably be cussing. We'll probably talk about that new Twitter clone thing and maybe FriendFeed and who knows what else.
- Cyndy
Historically speaking, it used to be every other word you Tweeted. Now, I'm saying about every 50th when you are on Seesmic.
- Cyndy
I really enjoyed listening in to the conversation for the time I did. Thanks for the opportunity. I might have talked if I was more of the micro-blogger but I still haven't really caught that bug as much as I would like to.
- Chris Ridenour
Thanks Chris. Tentative topics for next week (time and date tentative right now as well) is the presence of companies in countries with poor human rights records and the relative dearth of women in tech.
- Cyndy
Be careful with this... it's very buggy.. Also, when a stream is started it takes 2 hours for it to end out even if you stop something. It basically renders your account unusable for 2 hours if the XBOX 360 option doesn't work for you.
- Brandon
Dugg this yesterday. Can't wait to get my desktop fixed so I can try it out.
- David Cook
I tried this last night and got codec error on the 360 when trying to watch any of the netflix movie.
- Alan Le
@bret - I'm getting a lot of messages of warning :) But you probably already have Vista installed on a machine so you should be fine.
- MG Siegler
@Thomas Thanks for a great followup... HDCP = bad.I like how all video cards/monitors are advertised as "HDCP Ready" or "with HDCP!", like it's this wonderful feature. To me, it can't be a good thing to have hardware attempt to protect content. You are guaranteeing that something is going to go wrong, and it's not going to be an easy fix.
- Tim Hoeck
This is worth a shot, I heard something about this before and I liked it. I hope I don't kill my 360.
- Caesi
Dont ya just love it when the hotel clock radio goes off at 4:00AM? And you didnt set it?
- Alan Wilensky
from Alert Thingy
I use my laptop as my alarm. (Aurora FTW)
- EricaJoy
I've been using my blackberry alarm as a backup since my regular alarm clock's battery backup started acting up. The BB alarm even works now that I have the BB set to turn itself off between 11pm and 6am.
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
But how do you turn off the buzzer on email and only leave the alarm on?
- leigh himel
Not a blackberry but been using my WM6 phone as alarm clock for same reason, battery failed in regular alarm, easier to figure out than hotel alarm clocks, + works Mon-Fri and do not need to set it every night.

first few guys I created. this thing is fantastic, I wasn't planning on it but I may shell out the $10 to buy it. You can see all my guys at m sporepedia page http://www.spore.com/view... - anyone else hard at work on these? :)
- felix
Shoot meant to post this to the spore room. :( Wish there was a "move" comment function.
- felix
I am going to check this out and also introduce my children to it so that they can create a character! If they show interest I will buy it!
- Joe Dawson
My kids (3 and 5) LOVED the creator. We've had a blast creating characters.
- David Worrell
What amazes me, other than the actual software, is that it's so fun and it isn't even the game! I mean, you create these guys and you can't even do anything but walk in a circle with them. How awesome is the actual game going to be? Man. Post some images, David!
- felix
Odd I can't get the trial to run on my Mac. Keeps crashing upon startup.
- ronin
Your comment about body type is wrong. Its not a flaw with the software, that's just user error ;)
- Chris Ridenour
Chris, really? It wouldn't be the first time. :) I couldn't figure out how to lumpify the torso, how do you do it? @saeba really? that's wierd, ran ok for me out of the box. :(
- felix
been along time since a good god-game made a mark on my pocketbook; this shall
- Michael W. May
from twhirl
Felix, I frequently just worked with the torso I was given, but I seem to remember highlighting a spinal segment and rolling the mouse wheel would expand the torso around that spinal segment. There may be an easier way, though.
- David Worrell
@felix Yeah, still can't get it to run even after rebooting and cleaning my disk permissions. Bummer.
- ronin
I am seeing this in the accounting end of the hospitality industry as well. The processing fees that we get charged are outrageous. Typically, I will try and steer folks into check or cash payments which is getting extremely difficult as many corporations use P-cards (ghost cards) to track their expenditures as well as realize the kickback of pts etc.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Where's George? users such as myself also appreciate this.
- Jake (aka Jawee)
from twhirl
I wonder how this affects the merchant agreements gas stations have with credit cards, which requires them to accept credit cards for any transaction.
- Mark Trapp
I wonder when will it happen here. Funny how the banks try to get every cent at least 5 times at each usage.
- Roland Hesz
I'm betting the gas station ends up reversing it. Fees or no fees, that's the way to pay. Who is going to walk around with $100 in cash just to get gas?
- Cyndy
I don't know about a Flash-killer. It's a different focus than Flash/Silverlight.
- Paul Reynolds
looks very interesting, though the name sounds more like an angry vegan music genre
- Benton
Enough with the "killers" flash has become the standard, good or bad) no one will develop for anything else unless the new one is light years ahead of Flash.
- Mike Wills
I think the timeline aspect of Flash shouldn't be forgotten. But when focusing purely on RIAs they do have a point when it comes to the more open standards of HTML, Javascript, and CSS.
- Ari Braginsky
I think Flash for video is unstoppable, but as an app platform.... I think a combo HJC is best because they are open.
- Joe Mac Stevens
Flash (or Silverlight) may dominate, but as Daniel points out in his post on Roughly Drafted, who wants Adobe or Microsoft to own the platform for rich web apps? Market dominance kills innovation. Let's not make that mistake again. Open or nothing. And, by the way, Sproutcore is a fully MVC framework ala Rails, Cocoa, etc. Devs like dat.
- Leo Laporte
It also comes down to the IDE for the developer ultimately. Flex Builder and Microsoft's suite of tools may be better than whatever comes from open source.
- Ari Braginsky
I don't see this as a Flash killer. It's a serious application framework for Javascript.
- Eric Hamilton
It's just another tool to be used or abused. No one's gonna care if your RIA is open-source if it stinks. Besides I think Flash has video and animation going for it where other frameworks are focusing on only the application development.
- Andrew Smith
Wow. This is EXACTLY the wrong direction. The Javascript engine will always be fragile, bug riddedn and inconsistent because it is implemented by many different teams - why rely on it when you don;t have to? Flash / AIR or Silverlight are definitely the way - they INSULATE the developer from browser craziness and versioning issues and have much better access to the OS when the sandbox allows. Apple doesn't do many stupid things - this is one of them.
- Soulhuntre
from twhirl
@Soulhuntre Javascript is a powerful language, partially BECAUSE it's widely implemented. JS is crazy good at objects and glue.
- Eric Hamilton
what's changed is the time, though. ballmer has always said that yahoo is not the strategy; yahoo would just accelerate the strategy. at this point it may just be too late.
- Alan Cheslow
I agree with this. Days where I block myself from Facebook and other distractions at work are the days when I accomplish the least. I tend to just work a lot slower when I work non-stop unless its one of those eureka type moments.
- Chris Ridenour
I would agree with these statistics as in project management we see the same thing. I do not think it is from any single reason, except perhaps that people are never 100% productive.Additionally, with input coming from so many angles, it is difficult to process it all. I’m re-reading GTD now and seeing how the distractions cause so many problems and eventually the weight of so many...

I am in the midst of a super duper Summer electrical storm over here in Rochester, NY... watching big bolts of lightening strick the surface of the Irondequoit bay... awesome laser light show!! with loud thunder to go match
- Susan Beebe
Susan, I miss that. No thunderstorms in California.
- Jason Wehmhoener
@Jason @Susan - me too. Grew up in Virginia, plenty of storm action. I'm sitting in some fog here in San Francisco right now.
- Hutch Carpenter
OpenID does need to start blending into the browser. Maybe Gears is a good way to help do this?
- David Recordon
What's the point of a identify management, when the user always click allow. First people need to understand why there is a need for OpenID. I think more more we try to fix a problem which Jon Random User even doesn't have.
- Benjamin Kohler
Screw Plurk. Give me a timeline on FriendFeed (admit it, you want an experimental tab) and let me visualize my entire online life, instead of one facet of it.
