It does looks like a giant urinal, but good concept nevertheless. - Winston Teo
I think it looks amazing, i personally have a fantasy about a bathtub i can lay down and stretch my feet and arms out and not hit either end of the tub. - Jason Lowe

"Dow loses 345 points as mixed retail sales reports, weak job market news and an oil price slide magnify fears about a global slowdown." - imabonehead via Bookmarklet
" It was the fourth-biggest one-day decline on a point basis this year and the third-worst day on a percentage basis.
It was the 51st session in 2008 in which the Dow posted triple-digit losses, according to Dow Jones. That's the worst record for the blue-chip barometer since 2002, when the Dow declined at least 100 points 67 times during the year." - imabonehead

"The halo effect from exports could already be wearing off. Rosenberg says the second-quarter GDP data showed U.S. corporate profits from foreign sources dropped 15% from first-quarter levels, due to softer worldwide economic conditions.
He expects to see more of the same in coming quarters, as foreign profits slip under the pressure of a stronger dollar, which increases the price of U.S. goods overseas." - imabonehead
"A big commodities trader, Ospraie Management, is shutting its biggest hedge fund after a 38% loss tied to wrong-way bets on natural gas and other materials." - Chris White
I became the first subscriber on YouTube for the WindowsVideos account. Just watched the first commercial and it's out of sync. I didnt like the aethetic right from the start and I tried very hard to understand it, but couldnt. I watched it again and tried to get it, but I still am not getting it. Perhaps Im missing something. - Andrew Baron
What the.... This is it? Cripes. This is more damaging to their image than anything Apple have put out. - Andrew
hilarious. it's good to see seinfeld. and gates is awesome to let himself be parodied like that. - Ranjit Mathoda
Yes, my man Bill is funny. No, your man Steve is not. That is all. :) - Randy Holloway
I'm a huge Seinfeld fan, but that was pretty weak. - Matt
Buy Apple stock! Jerry, buy me a MacBook...iConJohn - john coffey
I don't get it either. these commercials will be a miss. Seinfeld is so "I love the 90s". - Alan Le
Andrew, you're not missing anything. There's nothing to get. A bunch of silly nonsensicle halabaloo. Microsoft continues to be completely out of touch with, everything. Ad campaign FAIL! - John Reynolds via twhirl
I like Seinfeld. I'm still disgruntled with Microsoft. - Chris Menning
I thought it was funny, too. Effective as far as selling or promoting anything, probably not, but I liked it as a standalone bit. - abacab
Well, that felt uninspired. Amusing, though, but not the right way. - W. Thomas Leroux
Other than The Office, Seinfeld is still funnier than most TV today. This commercial could have been good if it had a point. BTW, I saw it during the Giants game, and it still seemed very long. - Chris White
I love that's his jail mugshot on the clown card - joly
I dunno. it was fun to watch. I'm not one who can be convinced by anything MS does to switch back so I guess I can just watch and enjoy Seinfeld do his thing. - Geoff Longman
Um. No. Gates IS NOT to Microsoft as Jobs is to Apple. Seinfeld draws painful attention to that fact. - rzklkng
The company with the best comedians wins? - Joni Moilanen
I guess the point is that Microsoft wants to remind general public of themselves and that they can be sort of funny, too ;) Or maybe the idea comes clear after few ads. - Joni Moilanen
But was it really funny? I think *most* people think it wasnt funny. And it has only two stars on YouTube. I complied a list of headlines here: http://dembot.com/post/4888143... - Andrew Baron
it has a "we're one of you, really.. ignore our fortunes, we're *just* *like* *you*" angle to it. I half expected them to have resurrected Al Bundy for the store. I found the windows 1.0 ad with steve ballmer to be funnier! - alphaxion
Oh dear. 3/10. Must try harder Microsoft. And the out-of-sync audio doesn't reflect that well on your brand. - Mike Coulter
No... not this way. Could be just waste of money but after moment of thinking... it's actually working nicely. While it gets negative attention, that is still good for overall ad campaign since it gets people speaking of it. And more time people spend of talking, more closely they remember it. - Daniel Schildt
@Daniel, since when was it out of fashion or too expensive to get people talking about something good? Putting out crap and expecting people to talk about it because its crap is not a very clever option. I cant imagine that they planned to it that way. - Andrew Baron
I don't think the ad is awful and if it came without the microsoft vs apple cultural baggage or the weight of expectations following microsoft's declaration that they were about to unleash the mother of all campaigns on the world I think reaction might have been more positive. I think Loren Feldman has it right - Microsoft don't need to look cool, their stuff just has to work well for the masses. - jeremy ettinghausen
"As the US housing slump deepened over the past three years, Manhattan’s real estate market seemed immune. Instead of crumbling with the rest of the nation, prices continued to rocket. Sales surged and new condominiums found multiple bidders. For a long while, Manhattan property was in an orbit all of its own.
But there are growing signs that this last bastion may be giving way. New York City, the seemingly indestructible foundation of the nation’s luxury property market, has this year begun to shown signs of strain. In the second quarter, traditionally the hottest property season, sales slumped 38 per cent to a five-year low, according to the Corcoran Group, the city’s largest residential real estate group." - Chris White via Bookmarklet

“It seems like the U-turn is pretty important for driving around Mountain View. In Rochester you see no U-turn signs everywhere but here it's the opposite.”
Typically, it's possible to choose a route that avoids this problem. Obviously the divided portions of El Camino sometimes require it though. - Paul Buchheit
I'd like this, but seems untrue for most situations. You will probably be making few u-turns in the future. - Chris White
I love the Nautilus in the fish tank at the Local Fish Store in Mountain View. Highly suggest bringing your kids to check it out. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
@Benjamin, you moving out there, or just going out for a visit to the office? - Jason Carreira
I think he's the new FFer. Probably driving in u-turns trying to find La Fiesta. :) - Chris White
I avoided the u-turns by walking. My challenge was finding a low spot on the fence along the Stevens Creek Trail. - Gary Burd
Just in town to visit. I'm walking everywhere. - Benjamin Golub
Gary: did you? can I hop my bike over it? - Tudor Bosman
Paul is right. The need for the u-turn is on el camino, where you know the store you want is there, but you aren't sure what side of the street it's on. - Chris White
Tudor: Here's where I hop over the fence near the hotel: http://tinyurl.com/576dfg I don't think it's practical to hop over with a bicycle because there's a very steep drop from ECR down to the trail. There's an official access point here: http://tinyurl.com/5ts38l - Gary Burd
"Hedge fund Ospraie Management, one of the biggest players in commodities, said it is shutting down its largest fund after significant losses.
The Ospraie Fund fell 27% in August alone due to bets on oil, natural gas and structured products, and the fund has been selling off its holdings over the past three weeks, possibly contributing to a decline in commodity prices. The fund, whose assets peaked at $3.8 billion late last year, is the biggest run by Dwight Anderson, a veteran commodities investor." - Chris White via Bookmarklet

“Anyone else think it's a coincidence that gas prices are falling during the Democratic Convention? Rising gas prices would give them way too much fodder against the current administration....”
In order to start a flashy car, you need a cocked hat and a popped collar: two signatures of the modern douche bag. - Mark Trapp
This is also true with people that have extremely large tires. If you need a ladder to get into your truck, you are an asshat. Calling him a douchebag would give that person too much credit. - Michelle Martinez
I've seen the same in proud drivers too - driving way to fast for conditions and cutting everyone off as if their hybrid gives them the right - mike "glemak" dunn
It's actually the car. The car takes control of the driver and turns them into a raging douche. It's not something the car industry likes to talk about, but they did a documentary on it back in 1983. .... Wh- what do you mean "Christine" was fiction? - Nine - Like the number
lol guess iphone thinks prius = proud (I rest my case) - mike "glemak" dunn
Give these folks a break. It's hard to see pedestrians with your head up your ass. - Jason Kucsma
Guys with vans (trucks in America I expect) are the worst. They're working, running from job to job, and they have to kinda speed around a bit. - john conroy
perhaps it's a sense of entitlement that makes them impervious to others? i can't say it's all people though - Cee Bee
Most of the time, they're not just the worst drivers, they're also the worst people. - Iain Baker
I guess no one in this thread drives a flashy car. What do you consider flashy. And why is the word 'ass' being used so much? - Mo J
I believe it was a BMW Z4. I guess even having the top down wasn't enough to prevent him from trying to run me over - Shey
@johnconroy - we call them panel vans in northeast and you nailed it they are a danger - some of the worst drivers are those who drive for a living - nyc cabbies too for example - mike "glemak" dunn
Because they are new, having just replaced the old one from a wreck. - Louis Gray
flashy cars usually mean a higher level of self-centeredness - it's not in their nature to look out for anything but themselves. - Morgan
You got "it's" license plate number, right? For attempted hit and run? Seriously, in my neck of the woods, people do report stuff like this. Keeps the asshat population from getting higher than it already is. - Helen Is SOOO Not Of Troy via fftogo
What's the difference between a Mercedes S Class and a Hedgehog? Answer: with the hedgehog, the pricks are on the outside... - john conroy
I've often thought that there should be a car switching program based on driving ability. So you can simply pull-over the Jaguar and make a 'citizens switch'. So the worst driver's get the Pintos which might inspire them to drive better. (Yes, it's fantasy.) - AJ Kohn
aj: in our household of 4 drivers the fantasy is for car mounted rocket launchers - but that's just us ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
Wow, I just discovered that I'm an asshat, douchebag, having a midlife crisis, am a bad driver, am self-centered, should wear popped collars, have my head up my ass, and are one of the worse people. - Chris White
ahem ... lovely Sellek's character in Magnum P.I. ... - silpol
Or it could be that bad drivers come in all flavors, including 'flashy cars', taxicabs, contractor trucks, bus drivers, soccer mom vans, and old volkswagon jettas, just like asshats come in all sizes, including those who judge others by a material possession. - Chris White
@mike: lol. nice! I've also thought of LED communication on the front and rear. "Thanks for using a turn signal dipwad!" - AJ Kohn
Actually there is some real statistical evidence on this via actuarial tables for car insurance. Granted that's accident potential and not always a proxy for good or bad driving - but it's close. - AJ Kohn
Mo Jawhari, I think flashy in this thread means over $35k usd. I thought it must have been a Lamborghini or a Ferrari when I first read it. I think asshat is being used because they have just discovered the word and are still tickled whenever they use it. - Chris White
I think a $20k Mitsubishi Eclipse can be flashy, too. Is that incorrect? - MiniMage via NoiseRiver
AJ, like when the kids in an old beat up car ran a red light and crashed into my brand new flashy car, spun me around 3 times so that it hit 3 other cars, and totaled it? I suppose that wouldn't make it into the tables, since they didn't have insurance. I would like to see these tables, since my guess is that lots of really bad drivers don't report accidents, and most flashy car insurance claims are for high speed highway accidents (which typically don't have pedestrians). - Chris White
MiniMage, I would have to say, yes, it is incorrect that a Mitsubishi Eclipse is flashy. - Chris White
Hey, I drive like an Asshole but I don't have a flashy car....so get out of the way. (But then again, I live in Boston so you already know to be out of the way.) - Todd
Todd, someone told me in NYC, driver's only look ahead of them, and the only worse drivers are in Boston, where they don't look at all. :) - Chris White
I don't know, I see plenty of AssHat drivers cruising around in beat up Honda Civics or equivalent. - Jeff P. Henderson
From my observation, BMW drivers definitely do drive more aggressively and recklessly. I once saw two people get out of their cars shouting, and nearly to blows in a PARKING LOT over a parking space in front of a freaking Togo's and guess what - both had BMWs. - Jason Kaneshiro
I can't stand SUV and Mini-van drivers.. .rrrr - orionstarr
Speaking as someone who jumped head first into the world without first finishing his degree, I completely agree. I eventually finished it, but still wish I had done it first. - Allen Hutchison
Some say you only apply 10% of what you learnt in college in your career. The question I ask is, "which 10%?" :-> - Jeff Sandquist
This assumes you learn more in school than by working. Some of the smartest people I've known don't have degrees. - Chris White
Done right, I think you can learn a lot about yourself in school. I know there are exceptions in either direction. But generally, I believe a good liberal arts education, which healthy amounts of study abroad, a few opportunities for crappy manual labor or tipping jobs, and volunteer work produce quality people with good self awareness, positive dispositions, and great attitudes about collaborating with others and building things that matter. - Sacca
Don't get me wrong, I think school is great. I especially like that you mentioned a good liberal arts education. I was thinking more along the lines of computer science, and how some particular companies are so focused on academic achievements during hiring that they miss out on people that are scary smart. - Chris White
Left college my junior year to get a job and have not regretted it for one instant. And I learn more about myself every year to this day and going forward, never felt like finding oneself was something limited to college :-) - KC Lemson
trust me, the older you get, the less the degree matters. I finally finished mine, and I've never had a call for it yet - Duncan Riley
"The multitouch pioneer and his company, Perceptive Pixel, have devoted the better part of two years to building an entirely new multitouch framework from the ground up. Instead of simply mapping multitouch technology to familiar interfaces and devices, Han's goal is far more sweeping: To use the technology as a foundation for an entirely new operating system." - Chris White via Bookmarklet
"I can confirm what McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman is saying — that Amazon.com plans to unveil a larger-screen model of its Kindle e-book player, aimed at students, in the coming months. And I’m also hearing some details, similar to TechCrunch in July (my apologies to TechCrunch for the use of “Kindle 2.0” in this headline; I somehow missed this post that uses the same phrase while writing this post), about an upgrade of the base model, that I’m told is coming in September (though Wright Ragen thinks it may be in October). My sources say the new version is significantly thinner, has a better screen, is more stylish and includes fixes to some of the user interface annoyances with the first version" - Chris White via Bookmarklet

"The student textbook market will soon welcome another newcomer to the market in the form of a revamped Amazon Kindle, according to McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman. If true, it will have to compete with a number of other digital textbook options, but has the potential to win students' affections by changing the textbook market for the better." - Chris White

This was true until Vista. When my father CHOSE to get Vista (he seriously waited to get his laptop until Vista was released), I told him all bets were off. He misses our tech support. - Cyndy
@Cyndy I got the exact same story with my dad. We all have Macs in the family, but he insisted on buying a Vista laptop. The thing is now sitting in a corner somewhere while he steals my old PowerBook 12. - Rubin Sfadj
@Chris White: It's sad that many now think of Apple as the lesser of two evils instead of a wholly awesome choice that stands on its own merits. "It's not Windows" is certainly an OK justification for purchasing Apple stuff, but "It's _Apple_, a no-brainer buy" is how it used to (and should still) be. - abacab
it's even worse they expect you to help them as well with the nxt products they might wanna have :/ - Jaap Willem
abacab, I think most Apple products are "a wholly awesome choice", although no product line or product is perfect. Buying them all Macs and other Apple stuff makes upgrades easier, and since I don't use Windows much anymore, it's easier on my brain to just concentrate on one system. (I used to spend days trying to clean out viruses and other crap on Windows for them) - Chris White
It really is a tad unfair that Obama team makes so much of Joe/bama's rags-to-senate life story, but gives short shrift to McCain's rise, first the humble son and grandson of an Admiral, then marrying into ownership of a vast beer empire. - j1m
Funny j1m. But seriously, McCain coming from wealth and power isn't what bothers me about him. It's his stance on Iraq, Iran, and a conservative supreme court, as well how he doesn't always seem that sharp. - Chris White
Ah, I see you possess a lingering interest in the merits of the case. Obama is such a vastly superior candidate, when considered on the merits, that I can't remember the last time I thought about them. To me it's all just comedy. - j1m
"The CFTC, which learned about the nature of Vitol's activities only after making an unusual request for data from the firm, now reports that financial firms speculating for their clients or for themselves account for about 81 percent of the oil contracts on NYMEX, a far bigger share than had previously been stated by the agency. That figure may rise in coming weeks as the CFTC checks the status of other big traders." - Chris White
But the names of no individuals involved in the trading are mentioned? Why are they being protected? Why the lack of transparency regarding activities which so powerfully affect the entire planet? - Sean McBride

Can't say I'm thrilled with the Biden pick. A conventional and cautious pick of a Washington insider who is prone to gaffes and open to the accusation of being more flash than substance (because of the Kinnock stuff). And what state does he bring? I almost would have preferred Hillary (ok, that last bit is just flamebait). - Mike Yang
