Jeff Han: We're Just Scratching the Surface of Multitouch
Tuesday at 2:53 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"The multitouch pioneer and his company, Perceptive Pixel, have devoted the better part of two years to building an entirely new multitouch framework from the ground up. Instead of simply mapping multitouch technology to familiar interfaces and devices, Han's goal is far more sweeping: To use the technology as a foundation for an entirely new operating system." - Chris White via Bookmarklet

"I can confirm what McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman is saying — that Amazon.com plans to unveil a larger-screen model of its Kindle e-book player, aimed at students, in the coming months. And I’m also hearing some details, similar to TechCrunch in July (my apologies to TechCrunch for the use of “Kindle 2.0” in this headline; I somehow missed this post that uses the same phrase while writing this post), about an upgrade of the base model, that I’m told is coming in September (though Wright Ragen thinks it may be in October). My sources say the new version is significantly thinner, has a better screen, is more stylish and includes fixes to some of the user interface annoyances with the first version" - Chris White via Bookmarklet

Three Dimensional Images in the Air
Three Dimensional Images in the Air

"The device we have developed utilizes the plasma emission phenomenon near the focal point of focused laser light. By controlling the position of the focal point in the direction of the x-, y-, and z-axes, we have succeeded in displaying real 3D-images constructed by dot arrays in air (3D-space). ... The laser light source we used in this work is a high-quality and high–brightness infrared pulsed laser (repetition frequency of pulse: approximately 100 Hz), by which plasma production can be more precisely controlled, enabling brighter and higher contrast image drawing. In addition, the distance between the device and drawing points can be greatly extended (several meters)." - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
I'm sure it could be made into a musical instrument as well; with the dots correlated to the note scales, and most certainly with multi-coloured light dots could create some lovely 3D art installations. - Jason Brooks
I'm really curious how powerful the lasers are. It's a very clever solution, but I wonder if it will also set the ceiling on fire. - Paul Buchheit
Well, given that it turns *air* into *glowing plasma*, I don't think you'd want to run your fingers through that image. - ⓞnor
The future's so bright you gotta wear shades.~@^@~ - Jason Brooks
But only at one point. How tightly can you focus a laser beam? I have a similar idea for building a remote bug zapper -- use a laser range finder to measure the distance to the bug and then set the focus on the beam to concentrate a bright light directly on the insect (and if you miss it disperses again instead of blinding you or setting the house on fire). - Paul Buchheit

"The student textbook market will soon welcome another newcomer to the market in the form of a revamped Amazon Kindle, according to McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman. If true, it will have to compete with a number of other digital textbook options, but has the potential to win students' affections by changing the textbook market for the better." - Chris White

Brother: Wives handle McCain finances - Kenneth P. Vogel - Politico.com
August 23 at 4:58 pm - via Reshare - Link
It really is a tad unfair that Obama team makes so much of Joe/bama's rags-to-senate life story, but gives short shrift to McCain's rise, first the humble son and grandson of an Admiral, then marrying into ownership of a vast beer empire. - j1m
Funny j1m. But seriously, McCain coming from wealth and power isn't what bothers me about him. It's his stance on Iraq, Iran, and a conservative supreme court, as well how he doesn't always seem that sharp. - Chris White
Ah, I see you possess a lingering interest in the merits of the case. Obama is such a vastly superior candidate, when considered on the merits, that I can't remember the last time I thought about them. To me it's all just comedy. - j1m

"The CFTC, which learned about the nature of Vitol's activities only after making an unusual request for data from the firm, now reports that financial firms speculating for their clients or for themselves account for about 81 percent of the oil contracts on NYMEX, a far bigger share than had previously been stated by the agency. That figure may rise in coming weeks as the CFTC checks the status of other big traders." - Chris White
But the names of no individuals involved in the trading are mentioned? Why are they being protected? Why the lack of transparency regarding activities which so powerfully affect the entire planet? - Sean McBride
