I sometimes have to stop myself from spending too much time on Google Reader at work, but as long as it's within moderation I think it very much helps me professionally. I think being up on tech news/trends gives developers a big leg up: most clients appreciate developers who can understand business & trends in additional to software engineering. - Costa Walcott
