Microsoft Releases "Math Worksheet Generator" for Students - http://bhandler.spaces.live.com/Blog...
That sounds really cool (my wife is a 6th-grade math teacher). Do they have an OS X version? All the school districts around here are Mac-only. - Glen Campbell
Nice... thanks for posting that! - Her Lindsay-ness
Thanks, Akiva. Will check out! - Melanie Reed
Akiva, have you ever used Pearson Mathlabs? I noticed this goes into Algebra but probably not algebra 2. I'm surprised MS is stopping at this point without doing anything that competes with Pearson Stat/Mathlabs. It's incredibly intuitive for learning software http://coursecompass.com/html... I'm able to do complex algebra problems and graphing problems with it as well as... more... - Melanie Reed

The concept behind the upcoming movie "Surrogates" was pretty cool... when it was called "The Matrix".
It isn't the same idea; it has more in common with Avatar than the Matrix, although Avatar sells the virtual experience as real and humanizing (of aliens) whereas Surrogates is about the experience being dehumanizing - RAPatton
Are you trying to say Hollywood is out of ideas? Reboot, reboot, reboot! - Rick Schmidt
People know they are using the Surrogates, and ultimately it is a story about how it is dehumanizing to use these representations of ourselves. I enjoyed the graphic novel, and think that the film can do pretty well - RAPatton
Ah, I got it now Robert, thanks. The trailer made it seem remarkably like the Matrix: group of resistance fighters trying to take on a larger entity that's bent on keeping people locked up in a virtual world for a nefarious purpose, only a select few know what the real world is really like, and a misplaced guy who's blown away by all the new stuff he's learned. - Mark Trapp
Without giving too much away, it is a world where you can interface with a robot surrogate version of yourself that allows you to sense as you would as a person. A police officer investigatiing a crime has his surrogate broken and is forced out to explore the real world for the first time in years and realizes that along the way we are losing something. - RAPatton
LOL - Melissa
I have to say the subway ads for "Surrogates" are very powerful. Bold, with beautiful bodies that are part slinky. (am probably dating myself by mentioning that toy. :-) ) - Karma Martell

it's really hard to find new, good podcasts. Just went through 2 pages of search results here at FriendFeed and didn't find anything I wanted to listen to more than Stack Overflow and twit. Those i already knew about. :( What's your iTunes podcast window look like? hint hint, suggestions?

I listen to the Gillmor Gang (I'll be on tomorrow at 1 p.m. from China, by the way) and TWiT. Otherwise I "snack" on other audio shows here and there. - Robert Scoble
NY Times Front Page, Wall Street Journal Tech News Briefing (both are good first thing in the morning), NewsGang Live / Gillmor Gang. Leo Laporte has a few good ones like TWiT, MacBreak Weekly, Windows Weekly, Security Now. - Rolf Schewe
I feel bad for not listening to TWiT very much while everyone else does. It is in my podcatcher but I almost always listen to it part way and then move on. The podcast is a lot of fun, but it just feels like BOL got the same things already and talked about them days earlier. I have a lot of podcasts (I do love NPR and I've found a number of great book world and fiction podcasts) and I'd rather listen to something new. - Aram Zucker-Scharff from twhirl
Aram: I understand that. I don't get to all of them either. usually I just listen to the ones that get talked about on Twitter or FriendFeed. Speaking of which, http://www.fastcompany.tv is my video podcast. - Robert Scoble
These are all great suggestions -- I just scarfed up a mess of them and added them to iTunes. Thanks! - Mitch Wagner

"Jerry Robinson, an essential figure in the early history of Batman and the American comic book, has many of his vintage ink treasures on display right now at the Skirball Cultural Center, among them his original 1940 sketch of the Joker, the cackling clown who today rivals Darth Vader and Hannibal Lecter in popcorn-movie villainy. But, in Robinson’s long and wandering career as an illustrator, this new, sleek installation is hardly the most important art show — that distinction belongs to a one-man exhibit he staged 70 years ago on a tennis court in the Catskills. Robinson was fresh from high school graduation in Trenton, N.J., and saving his nickels for college, but his mother was worried about his health; he had been peddling (and pedaling) for weeks as a bicycle ice-cream salesman, and the wiry teen was under 90 pounds. At her insistence, he splurged on a visit to a leafy resort and arrived on its tennis court wearing a white painter’s jacket that he had decorated with his cartoons, the same sort that had made him a popular contributor to his school paper." - RAPatton
"Robinson, however, was impressed with Kane’s offer of a drawing-table job in New York. The teenager had been accepted at three universities and had planned on Syracuse, but after the serendipitous meeting, he phoned Columbia in the city and said he was on the way. Just to complete the giddy Frank Capra-esque sweep of the story, Robinson was spared a bus ride when a resort guest, the... more... - RAPatton

How women are changing the nature of war photography - http://www.guardian.co.uk/artandd...
How women are changing the nature of war photography
"With his camera slung over his fatigues and a cigarette dangling from his mouth, Robert Capa defined the image of the war photographer in the 1930s. Ever since, conflict photography has been seen, essentially, as a man's job. The stories of women war photographers have been largely sidelined - among them Gerda Taro, Capa's girlfriend and colleague on the Spanish civil war frontline. Her work, recently rediscovered, went on show with Capa's at the Barbican in London last month. And there was Lee Miller, of course, but she was also blonde and beautiful, and much photographed herself. Today, far more women work in war zones, shooting conflicts and their consequences. But if the situation is changing, it is changing slowly. Susan Meiselas - the US photographer renowned for her images of Nicaragua's 1970s civil war, which have just been republished in a new book - is still one of only seven women at the Magnum photo agency, out of a total of 79 international photographers." - RAPatton from Bookmarklet
"Edelstein talks about photographing a mother and son in El Salvador. The woman, Felipa, had just been reunited with her son, Ricardo, one of the many children who had been taken from their homes by the military 16 years before. i;ve always had mixed emotions towards "war photographers" -- on one hand they present a side of life that many don't get to see and realize that occurs, but on the other hand is the separation or closing off from the subject and actual events -- many of them being tragic. as a human being i think it's pretty difficult to choose one over the other and couldn't help but get involved in another way than simply taking pictures. - Cee Bee
I like the fact that there are now female war photographers who are able to show a side of war that remained hidden until now. - Shevonne

FT.com / Companies / Media - Newspapers face fresh printing pressures
"Newspapers, which are already bracing themselves for falling advertising sales as the global economy turns down, face more bad news next year as newsprint producers try to push through steep price increases. European newsprint producers led by Norske Skog, the world’s second-largest, are currently negotiating with customers to increase prices by up to 20 per cent. ... Since 95% of the components are the same in netbooks, I'd look at the 5% differences. Some will meet your requirements, while some won't. Example: need a full-sized, correctly place Right-Shift key? Some have 'em and some don't. Do you have any special requirements for your computing needs? - Kevin C. Tofel

oh, and another thing that is super cool...the Finding Nemo DVD has aquarium "screensavers" you can play. (they just loop) There are different ones to choose from on each of the discs that come in the case. They have soft, soothing noises and calming visuals w/warm lights. It has really helped our son to fall asleep on a couple of occasions! I bet yours would love the calming & bright colors. Try it out :) - TheMacMommy
Oh man I'm a big crystal method fan but you're going to make them grow up agro --or desensitized - Jeremiah Owyang
I agree that five minutes is about the longest I would let kids under two watch something like that. Their brains need to learn to develop depth perception and flat screens don't help that. I can't remember where I was reading that years ago native americans who had grown up mostly outdoors had incredible depth perception such that they could look at landscape features very far away and know how large and deep rocks and mountain faces, etc. were, whereas if we looked at that today we have no clue. - Laura Norvig

Republicans are getting wise to the grassroots movement see http://www.rebuildtheparty.com/ link via @planspark
The Republican Party has a Cold War mentality that praises Reagan at every opportunity. Their demographic consists of older, more rural Americans. Younger Americans tend to be more progressive and use the Internet as an integral part of their lives which favors the Democrats. Republicans have a big challenge to remake themselves as a Party of the future with the Internet as a catalyst... more... - Derek Forrest
