Those games often drag people in too deep cause the provide a very simple way to experience success: Why deal with the harsh world outside where success is so hard to achieve, when you get measurable success in WoW by playing? It's not that the game in itself is bad (just plain boring IMO) but it tends to lure people who have a problem finding success and appreciation in real life, so I'd keep a close look at his playtimes and _why_ he plays.
