936 Little Blobs
Thursday at 8:19 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Last month went by pretty quickly, didn't it? One month is not a very long time, but the fact of the matter is that the life expectancy (in the United States) is only about 936 months. Life sure looks different to me when I can see my whole life displayed before me as 936 little blobs." - ⓞnor via Bookmarklet

I figure I have about 40 years left, and I'm starting to look at 40 1-year projects... what should they be? what would be the most impactful? the most useful to the world? running for political office, McCain's speech aside, is NOT one of them!!! - Justin Long

"As the debate over the teaching of evolution in public schools continues, a new controversy over the science curriculum arose Monday in this embattled Midwestern state. Scientists from the Evangelical Center For Faith-Based Reasoning are now asserting that the long-held "theory of gravity" is flawed, and they have responded to it with a new theory of Intelligent Falling." - Tudor Bosman via Bookmarklet

Gravity is just a theory... I choose not to believe it, therefore I can fly - Jason Carreira
Jason: "There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." - Tudor Bosman
"The first part is easy. All it requires is simply the ability to throw yourself forward with all your weight, and the willingness not to mind that it's going to hurt. That is, it's going to hurt if you fail to miss the ground. Most people fail to miss the ground, and if they are really trying properly, the likelihood is that they will fail to miss it fairly hard. Clearly, it is the second part, the missing, which presents the difficulties." - Tudor Bosman

I see the author 'Anne' doesn't sign her last name. That could be written by any Obamatron. - Peter Simard
Peter, if you read the letter, she says "If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny + Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations." A NY Times article also quotes her: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09... - Paul Buchheit
Her "loyalty above competence" description actually sounds a lot like GWB or HRC (and many other politicians I'm sure). - Paul Buchheit
Thanks Paul. - Peter Simard
Her letter is obviously authentic -- she fought Palin's attempts to ban books at the local library and fire the librarian. Apparently the author is on Palin's permanent enemies list for standing up for free speech and against censorship. She may be able to enlighten us about which books Palin wanted to ban. Are there any would-be book banners on Friendfeed? Why would anyone who values free speech support Sarah Palin? - Sean McBride
I can't believe that McCain actually found a woman who would NOT draw Hillary supporters! - Gabe Schaffer
I saw the NY Times article but she's attributed as Ann, not Anne. I like the content of this letter and do not support Palin in the slightest. But I want to ensure this isn't cooked up. There's plenty of other stuff that is incontrovertible. - AJ Kohn
"She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them." - j1m
Sarah Palin is proof positive that the Republican Party is now dominated by stupidity, ignorance and fanaticism. Is this statement in the least controversial? Palin, the Christian fundamentalist book censor, doesn't even know basic American history. She believes the Pledge of Allegiance (with the phrase "under God") was written by the American Founding Founders!! :) Jefferson, Franklin, Paine, Madison and the rest of the celestial crew would dismiss Palin and her confederates as utter dunces. - Sean McBride

Why can't Ventura run for president? - Gabe Schaffer
Interesting.,. maybe one debate can be freestyle wrestling... - Clare Dibble
I assume you all know that Ventura is a vigorous 9/11 skeptic. - Sean McBride
"Let me tell you sumthin' Mean Gene, politicians in Washington have been violating our civil liberties for far too long, and this year at Electionmania XLIV I am going to bodyslam those puny rights-stealing twerps and put the pride back in America!" I really dig this speech, and am a cautious fan of Ventura's, sort of like how I enjoy a good thunderstorm as long as I have a safe building from which to watch it. That 9/11 denial stuff is pretty wacky, though. Kind of like Scientology or Flat Earth. Oy. - Keith Pelczarski
Actually, Ventura seems to be much better informed about the facts of 9/11 than defenders of the official story, who have seen one Bush 43 administration official conspiracy theory after another collapse before their eyes. - Sean McBride
i have no idea about 9/11, but the pennsylvania and pentagon things have always made my bs detector go ping - Gregory Lent
Well, no doubt remains about the 9/11 anthrax attacks -- according to the FBI they were a false flag op and inside job. And the FBI doesn't even consider Osama bin Laden to be a prime suspect in the 9/11 attacks. - Sean McBride
I guess Ventura would know a thing or two about staged events. Seriously, though, if that's the only thing wrong with him, I'd vote for him in a heartbeat. It would help if his VP is Kucinich's wife, too. :) - Gabe Schaffer
Gabe -- funny line about staged events. :) I like the guy because he is totally real and a classical American libertarian (with a small "l"). He's the real deal. He has zero tolerance for bullshit. - Sean McBride

Cheney Waits Until Last Minute Again To Buy Sept. 11 Gifts | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

"I looked at the calendar yesterday, and I couldn't believe my eyes—9/11 is almost here!" a rosy-cheeked Cheney said upon returning to the White House Sunday with two giant bags overflowing with gift-wrapped boxes and big red bows. "It's the most wonderful time of the year." While Cheney is known by many to be cold and taciturn for the other 11 months of the year, those close to the vice president say there is something about the 9/11 season that puts a smile on his face and a spring in his step. Each Sept. 11 morning since 2001, Cheney has come to work donning a fireman costume and handed out small, thoughtful gifts to all White House staffers. In addition, at his home on 9/11 Eve, Cheney lays out large piles of presents for his children and grandchildren underneath the colorfully lit, six-foot-tall 9/11 towers that he sets up by the fireplace." - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
"No, 9/11 is about the warm feeling you get when you help an elderly woman cross the street and then whisper to her that the terrorists can strike at any moment" - what kind of a pov is this ? - Krishna Gade
I think I got it, but anyway: wat? - Rodrigo Jaroszewski
"Although Cheney himself has never received any Sept. 11 gifts, with the exception of a pair of silk pajamas from his wife and a second term in office, he insisted that he gets more joy from giving than receiving." - Roberto Bonini

Is the frequency and brashness of this type of police thuggery increasing, or is the coverage, or both? Despite some of his fringe beliefs, Buchanan has always been a true thinker in a traditional sense, and not always wedded to the blind faith that replaced the party of Reagan with the fanaticism of Bush - Duncan Riley
Buchanan has become much more sane in recent years. - William Harryman
Pat Buchanan sounded rather dynamic reading Obama's text. - Chris Baskind
@William, let's not take this out of context and go too far. He's still a nut. - Jason Carreira
I say we all pitch in and get him some reading glasses. Waddaya say? - AJ Kohn
I said "more sane," he still has a ways to go. But I have seen other examples in recent months where he seemed to have a clue. - William Harryman

Bad baby naming isn't just limited to celebrities. My Mom says that she went to school with twins named Mac and Ernie McInerny. Oof. Also, I'm not sure which surprises me more: 1) that someone knew the real name of "Puck" from the Real World or 2) that he was included as a "celebrity." I was not surprised that his child's names include "Bogart" and "Peyote." - Keith Pelczarski

"Bandiera and her colleagues proposed a different way of adjusting the piece rate: Managers would test-pick the field to see how difficult it was and set the rate accordingly, thus preventing the workers from engaging in a collective go-slow. (If the managers made a mistake in their estimate, and the pickers didn't earn minimum wage, Farmer Smith would make up the shortfall with an extra payment. This rarely happened.) The economists measured the result. By the time the experiment was over, Farmer Smith's initial skepticism had long evaporated: The new pay scheme increased productivity (kilograms of fruit per worker per hour) by about 50 percent." - Jessie Norris via Bookmarklet

6-Year-Old Stares Down Bottomless Abyss Of Formal Schooling | The Onion - America's Finest News Source
August 23 at 10:02 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Basic math—which the child has blissfully yet to learn—clearly demonstrates that the number of years before he will be released from the horrifying prison of formal schooling, is more than twice the length of time he has yet existed. According to a conservative estimate of six hours of school five days a week for nine months of the year, Bolduc faces an estimated 14,400 hours trapped in an endless succession of nearly identical, suffocating classrooms. This nightmarish but undeniably real scenario does not take into account additional time spent on homework, extracurricular responsibilities, or college, sources said. "I can't wait until school is over," said the 3-foot-tall tragic figure, who would not have been able, if asked, to contemplate the amount of time between now and summer, let alone the years and years of tedium to follow." - bob via Bookmarklet
