Is that the latest from Google Labs?? Babies delivered by email? Great no more morning sickness, and mood swings! I'm sure it's still in beta...
- Daan
Google anders even bij Flitsservice
- Daan Tol

"Leaving aside socioeconomic issues that prevent many parts of the world from having access to computers, mobile phones, or broadband, the panacea of an always-connected populace to access with all content, regardless of location, computer or Web browser, is still very far away. Thanks to overzealous individual governments or convoluted legalities that often involve copyright, the Web you see is likely far different from that enjoyed by the country bordering yours. Even in my short visit to the UK this week, I was annoyed to find that some of my data was blocked thanks to my newfound geography."
- Kol Tregaskes

Cecily, they may have understood before, but I got the chance to go through it myself and make screenshots. :)
- Louis Gray
They are blocking content in UK? That is interesting.
- TrafficBug
What is the reason for Hulu preventing their streams from going beyond the states?
- James Kuypers
Probably similar reasons as the hot new music-sharing site in the UK not being available in the States. (I can't recall the name, I'm in the States).
- motownmutt
These limitations are probably because of licencing issues. Region based licences suck! Even in Europe not all content is licensed for every country. A lot of music is NOT downloadable in the Netherlands, but if you go to the UK version of the same site, you can find it. The entertainment industry should stop with the region based license model from last century.
- Daan
Its not just greedy big media companies though - wikipedia content for example is very US/UK centric. Look up say a dog breed and you will see when it was introduced in the US and nothing about other countries...
- Iphigenie
wikipedia has too many power-crazed editors that discourage people from contributing. That's unfortunate too.
- Thomas Hawk
When I learned I couldn't use Spotify from the US I was indignant. Aren't I entitled to use everything on web? I imagine that's how others feel. Then I went and searched for a proxy service.
- Todd Hoff
The reason for Hulu's licenses is also the reason for DVD region coding.
- Andrew C (✓)
Flickr censors out all moderate and restricted content to German users. It's kind of ironic that Germans who use Flickr aren't allowed to see boobs even if they specifically request to be able to see adult content and verify that they are adults, while they show boobs on TV commercials in Germany. I have a photo of a *painting* by Mel Ramos from an all ages museum in Oakland that people in Germany aren't allowed to see. That's just stoopid.
- Thomas Hawk
I don't but Firefox seems to struggle with a lot of them on the screen at once. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
But then Firefox struggles in general. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Depends on the website. If I'm at a website like LiveJournal where some users have animated gifs as user icons, it doesn't bother me but when animated gifs are posted here in FriendFeed, they really annoy me and I hit "hide" as quickly as possible.
- Rochelle
Yes - I sure wish FF would have some mechanism of hiding all posts with them. I put them on a level with web pages that stream music automatically at you and almost as bad as <blink>. I hide them automatically in my stream and in weaker moments have considered unsubscribing from or even blocking offending posters.
- Brian Sullivan
Maybe this is why I'm not getting many comments nowadays. Maybe I should stop posting animated GIFs? :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Sometimes but mostly they are very amusing. And my feed moves quickly enough for it not to be annoying.
- Matt G
Yes. Most of the time I hide them.
- Daan
from Android
It depends on the content. Some diagrams work better when they are animated GIFs.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Not the kind that Mo usually posts, no. The ones that people think are cute to send on Sametime at work, yes.
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Yes, I hide them almost always without even looking at them.
- Derrick
It would be nice if you could hide them without looking at them -- I think that is the problem. ;-)
- Brian Sullivan
Yes. They are distracting and sometimes they bugger up the realtime feed when they fail to load.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
My laptop really doesn't like them so often I have to hide them before they send safari into a whirl and crashes it. Since the upgrade to snow leopard though it's been a lot better! Generally I find them funny as it's usually someone falling over and hurting themselves :)
- Charley M
No. I have no problem with GIFs, but you can prevent the animation in Firefox: type about:config, search for "image.animation_mode" and change the value from normal to none.

Yfrog and Twitpic are the easiest to use. Tweetphoto offers a lot more than just sharing photos on twitter.
- Sujay
I got pissed at them because they tweeted a marketing message from my account ("i just joined…") with out notifying me… that's a deal breaker. Haven't been back since.
- Prunella
+1 Prunella - agreed. I can understand why new/emerging services would want to do the autotweet thing, but they'd score more respect-points giving people the option to choose.
- Andrew Terry
Never used it. I use mobypicture.com. They support multiple photo & video sharing platforms and geotags.

Who are you happy to share your location with on Google Latitude? Is it important to keep your location private? Do you share to IRL friends only or don't you mind? Would you share with other FriendFeeders for example?
I think it's a great service. I've shared to one or two people and it's interested to follow yourself when you are traveling, say, on a train. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I don't mid sharing my location publicly :-)
- zsafwan
Thats a bit too far for me. But yeah there have been times and places where i thought it would be excellent to have.
- Roberto Bonini
I share it with my wife and close (IRL) friends only
- Andre P. Siregar
Would you share it with FFers you engage with a lot?
- Kol Tregaskes
I set it differently depending by people: some can have the exact location and some only the town I am in. When I am around usually I don't care too much, but my house is just for friends!
- Flavio
Kol, maybe I'm minority, but sharing my location with strangers (foursquare, brightkite, etc.) freaks me out
- Andre P. Siregar
Flavio, that sounds like a good idea.
- Kol Tregaskes
I do the same with Brightkite: if I am at a bar or restaurant I can select the exact address, if I am at a home or private location I just use the ZIP code or a nearby landmark.
- Flavio
As an infamous international spy, I need to keep my location confidential at all times. It is important to maintain my secret identity as a mild-mannered software engineer.
- DGentry
I use Latitude but don't share my exact location with everyone - just people I trust at least a little. Anyone else would just get my city-level location. I wouldn't make it totally public though.
- Martin Bryant
from iPhone
Flavio: I didin't know you could do that......
- Roberto Bonini
Roberto: from your friends list, select one or view profile (depending if you are on mobile or desktop) then see the sharing options.
- Flavio
Why would you share your location and who is interested in where you are?
- Nik
I share location with my wife, when I'm stuck in traffic. My friends don't use latitude.

I really want to get myself a decent new phone. Tried the IPhone but the on-screen keyboard really doesn't seem to cut the mustard. The N97 seems good but not convinced about the symbian OS. The HTC Hero seems ok and the automatic correction on the onscreen keyboard is nice but again I don't think you can beat a real keyboard. Now wondering about...
I have a Hero. You are right. Nothing beats a real keyboard. Auto correction can be annoying, specially when you type in multiple languages like I do. Typing standing in a train is quite an effort.
- Daan
from Android
I'm just interested in what Dan is wondering about. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
The N97 is definitely going to be my next phone, touchscreen and keyboard are just what I'm after on a Nokia phone. I don't have much of a problem with the OS, I've been using Nokia phones for years. So if it works and doesn't have big issues then it should be good.
- Kol Tregaskes
Haha, didn't realise the posts from IM get cropped!
- Dan Smith
Now wondering about the Nokia E series. There just doesn't seem to be a perfect phone out there at the mo. I'm really after something that will be good for email and using for social network sites, blogging on the go. It'd be good if I can use it for google maps and iplayer too. It's a shame the iphone doesn't have a keyboard, some of the apps available for it seem great.
- Dan Smith
Then get cropped on the site as there is a limit to how much can be entered into the title. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
At least it chose a good position to crop it! :)
- Dan Smith
I'm hoping the Nokia N97 will finally be a phone I could use the Internet one. Having the keyboard is the big bonus, has anyone any experience with the friend? I had a brief chat with a friend who got it a week or two ago and he loves it. He's a big mobile phone nerd too so knows his stuff. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm tempted by the N97. The guy next to me at work has it. It's good but I like the idea of the apps on the iphone and with Android. I've never been that impressed with Symbian apps.
- Dan Smith
I'll wait for WinMo 7 -phones if my E90 holds together that long.
- Jemm
Dan, what other apps (apart from the standard) are you after?
- Kol Tregaskes
Did you see the app that was written for the iphone that tells you which part of the tube to sit on to save time when you exit the station? Now that was a cool app.... it's not so much one particular app I am after Kol, just the fact that people are writing some cool stuff for those devices which it'd be nice to be able to get.
- Dan Smith
A guy at work is suggesting I should just get a blackberry!
- Dan Smith
OK, sounds cool, though if you're nerdy enough, like me, you know where to sit on the tube, hehe. I've not added any extras to my phones for a while, though I use it less and less but I presume the iPhone has better app support?
- Kol Tregaskes
The same friend I mentioned above had a Blackberry before the Nokia, said was got a very good phone but preferred the N97. I can't remember what Blackberry he had though - but it was new.
- Kol Tregaskes
Did you see the gadgetshow the other day Kol? They tested the iphone vs the palm pre vs the n97. Interestingly the N97 came out last. They seem to focus on user experience though. For me the ability to type quickly and accurately is a big factor.
- Dan Smith
from IM
Oh really, was it a specific test on certain features or general? What was the N97's faults. Agree about the typing, is the N97 not good for that? It looks like a pretty decent keyboard.
- Kol Tregaskes
I've been told to not be put off Blackberry's. They might have a rep but they are supposed to be pretty decent phones now.

Is it for the caffeine kick? Or to drink something warm to get you started each morning? Because you're addicted and can't do without? Or just because you like the taste of it?
- Brome
I asked the question because I don't drink coffee (mainly because I don't like the taste) but noticed that some people have to drink their daily or bi-daily cup to be fully operational, especially in the morning. The stimulating properties of coffee have always seemd quasi-magical to me.
- Brome
I don't. I don't like the taste either, Brome, but I'm fond of tea.
- Derrick
I like the taste (when had with sweetener and half/half). I love the smell and taste of it. Not addicted, though (thank god).

Why, do you have some? Is it good? Can I have it now? I don't have a caffeine problem. Just a little taste....cm'on man. Don't hold out on me!

All of the above, and because it is The Lifeforce without which we can't exist
- Eric Berlin
Eric: +1 for mentioning the Lifeforce! So when you feel 'a disturbance in the force, is that from someone taking the last cup of coffee? Or is it the coffee kicking in, resulting in strange gurgling from your tummy, which means you have 90 seconds to find a toilet?

First day in over 3 months! Up to London first thing to pick up and get working a laptop. Then can get get going. Thankfully no additional trip all the way over to Newbury.

Simon, I think they wanted me to start ASAP, we were waiting for a laptop, it was due Friday so contract was set to start then but what's happened was that laptop wasn't going to turn up till the 6th so now I'm taking someone else's and they are located in London. :-) The idea behind the Friday is to get the laptop working (lots to set-up) then start work proper on Monday. Note to people who would like us to subscribe to their feed: You need more than just a stream from your blog on it, more than just your tweets promoting your site or product or skill. You need to be posting natively or manually to FriendFeed and/or you need to be participating with the community.
Too many companies on here with a user account, put that into a group feed not a user fee please. It's fine to have your company blog imported but we need more from you to subscribe back to you. And personally I would say you need variety and something that catches my eye like images and photos. A stream of tweets is not another.
- Kol Tregaskes
Dumping your stuff here definitely won't catch anyone's eye. You gotta dump stuff here with the FF community in mind. Then, we probably expect you to respond when we talk on your junk.

Good point, i really just started with Friendfeed the last few weeks. I have mostly been reading a few subscribers and comments and posting from my Twitter and last.fm accounts. FF feels so much more connected being threaded and...

- Matt Ruiz
i agree with ya mr kol, but i dont think i've ever dumped more than 20 posts in one day, and never all from the same source, :( (sideways question of asking, what, do I post to much worthless stuff?)

- Valeria Maltoni
As far as I'm concerned people are free to dump the telephone directory if they feel like it, as long as they don't come back to complain that nobody subscribes, likes or comments on their feed. FF is flexible and can be used in many ways, obviously if one wants to use it to interact has to put some effort first as Kol rightly said.
- M F
M F, completely agree about they can do it, the point I'm trying to make is that they'll get more subscribers if they don't. :-)

i'm cool (everythings "cool" at the beach, ;), i didnt take it as a personal attack, i just appreciate group feedback, :)

I indeed prefer to subscribe to people of whom I feel I have a chance to get to know - by talking to them.

Serious question: Why is it important to post natively/manually inside Friendfeed? I have friends outside of Friendfeed too. If I post natively, I will only be sharing within Friendfeed.
- Andre P. Siregar
Kol, understand that. But I think Friendfeed was redesigned so source of feed is less important (the service icons no longer exist). Are you saying that FF *users* still discriminate against non-native posts? If so, why is it important where the post comes from?
- Andre P. Siregar
Andre, I'm saying users need more variety in their feeds and less spammy content, particularly companies simply promoting their products/services
- Kol Tregaskes
I don't care that much whether or not a user does "native" FriendFeed posts, as long as he participates with likes and comments. Liking and commenting makes a FriendFeed user.
- Meryn Stol
Yeah the wonders of mutual connections - and the community based initiative to speak on others and to speak on your similar to some of the recommendations on twitter of 7 to 2 or something like that. I appreciate friendfeed more because it gives you more area to work with as well as a great aggregate, but needs to be a two way street as Kol had said.
- Raymond Marr aka Knatchwa
Well said Kol. All they have to do is like something on anybody's post, but I come across accounts with no likes or comments and they think I'm going to subscribe. I don't require much, but they have to at least make an effort.

Please clarify: What does it mean "to be posting natively" if one is not posting manually? Not that I'd want to post mechanically, but the boundary seems clouded.
