@Subhasish Vodafone's press statement a couple of months back was generic w.r.t. SE Asia which was assumed to include India. Bharati made an official press release with Tim Cook that they will be launching in India in partnership. What puzzles me is the speeds that they will be able to support on their networks. popular high speed 3G technologies are CDMA based, UMTS & HSDPA: http://www.apple.com/pr... Though this was in the print edition of yesterdays BS, I can't find it online.

Considering that I am a very frequent user even with crappy GPRS speeds on my crummy (for browsing) SE; I will appreciate anything that is even trivially better.

It looks like people are solving it, so hopefully I'm not spoiling it: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Tab, Return. It's a variation of the Konami code (which nets you 30 lives in Contra) adapted for the keyboard. Figured out the first part from Paul's clue, but it took going through the minified Javascript to figure out a) that they didn't use the original Konami code like Google does and b) what they used for keyboard equivalents for "select" and "start."
- Mark Trapp
AWESOME! but didn't the code net you 99 lives?
- Keith - @tsudo
In Contra it was 30; not sure what it was in other Konami games.
- Mark Trapp
hahah man that's intense. i guess they know their audience :)

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja: U U D D L-Button R-Button L-Button R-Button Start. 30 lives. I'll never forget that ;p (there also was that B A B A variation too..) GG Mark.

Roll call...this can be great if we all participate. Add yourself to this shared map. I created a placemark on the 2 major intersections near where I live.
- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.
- Mark Krynsky
Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.
- Andrew Trinh
@Bec...nice. You are the first brave female on here.
- Mark Krynsky
Cool idea, Mark! I was thinking something like this would be fun the other day. Duly added myself - or at least the nearest big intersection. ;)

Mousing over the usernames shows your Google profile info...cool.

I marked a bus stop near my house. But not TOO near. :)

If you haven't yet...go add FriendFeed to your Google Profile...it will then auto-discover and allow you to add a ton of other profiles you have.
- Mark Krynsky
Thanks for the profile tip - I hadn't updated it since I moved here!

Thanks guys. This is coming along nicely. It's great to have as a resource to see where everyone is from. Hopefully this can become a standard feature on FF one day.

I've read the instruction and still don't see the button thing to add myself. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.

@Jill, make sure you are logged into your Google account and then click on the edit button above the list of names already on the map. You will then see the pushpin in the upper left hand side of the map.

Added. Seems like there are a lot of us in the Bay Area...we must do a get together at some point.
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
@Mark Not gonna make SXSW, but am definitely down for working on an FF get together. March is long enough away to make sure plenty of people have time to plan ahead. I added you on Upcoming so we can start coordinating it. Anyone else interested/want to help set this up?
- Neal "thePuck" Jansons
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!
- Mark Krynsky
Pinned! sheesh this just cost me 1/2 hour of time as I scrolled thru all the folks :)

Except for Bret, there are no FriendFeeders on the penninsula between San Jose and San Francisco. So much for Silicon Valley early adopters.

Cluelessness alert! I'm not seeing how to add my pushpin!

For some reason whenever i use google maps in creation-mode, it defaults to some other maps I've used, not the one I'm trying to access - ah, figured it out. Had to de-activate some other collaborative maps

After spending some time as an Evernote user I'm just fed up. Here's my reaction. I'd like to know: What do all of you use the program for? I feel like the only one whose had any issues with it considering the rave reviews flying around.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
I use it as a staging account. It's where I throw stuff that I don't have time to otherwise categorize. I also use it to store info that I know I'm going to need later but I'm in too big of hurry to do anything else. It's also great for screenshots. The best note taker in the world is still Notepad, or at least Notepad++.
- Keith - @tsudo
I do the same thing with OneNote, and if I pull it from the web or another doc, It'll keep a link. Also, it lets me pull up notes without opening the main program, just a blank notepad like area that auto saves and is searchable. This is what I don't get, what does Evernote do that makes it competitive? I feel like I must be missing out on some big secret.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
I use Evernote, for work and home. Reason #1 Its free, Reason #2 It works on multiple platforms. (I can find something of interest at work on a PC, and pull that same info and edit on my iPhone, or Mac at home.. try that with OneNote) Prior to Evernote, I was a Google Note book fan, the only problem was that I could not edit notes on my phone, but I can with Evernote.
- Steve Sill
I use Evernote to collect things from the web I want to remember that might go away (Photoshop tutorials are good examples...), I use it to store account credentials like a password manager. I use it to store all the PDFs that I have collected over the years. I use it to store MP3s so I can access them on other computers. I use it to store any bit of text or information I might need to recall later like the stuff my kid's school sends home, insurance policies, credit card emergency contact information...
- Lindsay
You don't have to save the link in the note when you cut and paste from the web, it captures that information for you. You can see the metadata for notes in the Windows (and I'm assuming Mac) clients at the top of each note. You can edit that if you need to but the web clipper or cut and paste from a website does it automatically.
- Lindsay
I guess I don't use it for note taking in the sense of academic note taking and I can see how it might be not as ideal, but it's extremely useful to me and I'm a very happy paid subscriber to the service. My main two complaints are not being able to store zip and other file types and not being able to share notes with specific people/groups. Oh, and lack of an Android G1 app. But I'm hoping all that will come eventually and it's still useful to me in the mean time.
- Lindsay
Lindsay, that's some of the same stuff I use OneNote for. While I do feel safe putting my passwords on OneNote, I don't know if I would with Evernote, considering everything passes through the web. I had no idea you could use it to store MP3s, but that doesn't seem like the ideal solution. The downside to Evernote is if you don't tag something properly it can be very very difficult to browse to.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
This is especially an issue with passwords, you don't want to make them easy for an intruder to find but trying to browse notebooks in Evernote is an exercise in frustration. For stuff on the web, isn't that the whole point of printing to a PDF? I have to admit, I am seeing some legitimate uses for Evernote, but still how often to you use it to go back? It seems to me that most people seem to use it more as a drop box than anything else.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
I use or for note since the beginning of 2005, when it was still a desktop only client. Since that time I've used it to store login information, registration information, names and telephone numbers, where I've put certain things in the house (and whereas move them to later because I always forget, LOL), snippets of pertinent knowledge from webpages, events (when did we get the dog?...
- Ruud Hein
Aram - for passwords, I store those in encrypted notes, so I don't worry so much about whether it's exposed on the web. It's not an ideal solution as I can only decrypt those on the Windows client but I don't have to look things up that often... It's more for peace of mind that I know they are there if I forget.
- Lindsay
For printing to PDF, now that I have Evernote, I don't have to do that anymore, I can just clip straight to Evernote. But I have a huge backlog of them, and now they are in one place, tagged and organized. And I do use them (I was just looking up some information on my kid's upcoming band concert that I'd scanned in so I can forward to my mom before writing this). Search works well for me, and the OCR is great. I don't HAVE to use tags because of that. I actually use tags as notebooks instead.
- Lindsay
I don't like the "folder" model of organizing information. If I use tags and structure them I can look up information in several different "thought paths". Yes, I tag every note, and make a point of it. It's been a while since I used OneNote but all the notebooks and sub-notebooks made it hard for me find things. I like tagging much better... it's flat and deep at the same time.
- Lindsay
I also use OneNote for work. I have a separate account for all my work notes (so I can hand it over when I leave). I use it to document chat sessions (our logs are erased daily) and code snippets and I document processes and procedures (with links to relevant files/sites in the steps). I keep account credentials and other information encrypted there. I use it every single day, probably about 70% adding info and 30% looking it up again (but when I do need to look it up, it's quick and easy!).
- Lindsay
See, the issue I have is that yes, some of this stuff that Evernote can do is good, but I can do the same thing (all of it) and a lot more in OneNote with the exception of the easy sync. I guess part of it is work style Lindsay, I like OneNote's notebooks and sub-notebooks, they make organizing things easy. Like I said before, it seems to me that the legitimate uses of Evernote are more...

For example: one of the main things I use OneNote for is to build a bible for a game development team I'm on. Within the notebook for that project each topic has it's own section, each section has headings on notes with general descriptions and in-notebook links then when I want to drill down into more detail I pull it into a sub-note. For me, OneNote is a real reference. One that works...

- Aram Zucker-Scharff
Yeah, I agree, Aram. I don't use it to take notes, but to archive info. I am very picky about tags. I put at least one tag and usually several on every note. I have hundreds of tags and I have those organized in hierarchies. I use the auto-complete feature for filling in tags in the web clipper. Between tags and search I have no problems finding things again. I use Evernote from home, work and my phone and LOVE having access to my info anywhere I am. That's the main advantage over OneNote for me.
- Lindsay
And why would you use Evernote to save websites when Delicious does it better, Google does immediate caching and the Internet Archive saves old versions of the website? I understand that Evernote does this stuff, but it seems to me that there is a whole host of tools out there, many of them free, that do it better. Most of them are also better about increasing content for your social...
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
Delicious doesn't save any of the content (I have quite a large Del.icio.us archive, btw). Internet Archive has failed me (lots of times) and I have had problems finding things again on Google... Most of the stuff I put in Evernote I don't really want to share with the world (though I would like to with specific people). OneNote is not free, limited to Windows, and doesn't automatically sync with a backup in the clouds and isn't accessible from my phone. For me, it serves my needs better than OneNote.
- Lindsay
I am pretty familiar with the other tools available out there (I am a beta site addict and a digital packrat... if it looked at all useful I tried it). Evernote isn't perfect but it's constantly improving and what's already there works for how I need it. And it's ONE service verses several that lets me have my data where, when and how I need it. It's my digital file cabinet.
- Lindsay
Lindsay, you hit on the very reason why I wish I could use Evernote so much, the ability to have my stuff living on the cloud would be fantastic. Right now my OneNote is being synced up between my laptop and desktop using an FTP solution with my server. Having it automatic with Evernote has so much promise. But I can't use Evernote for notes, or to work with text in the free-form drop...

- Aram Zucker-Scharff
I guess what it really comes down to was just how disappointed I was in Evernote, I expected to be able to find a solution to my backup issues, but for me, using Evernote caused way more problems then it solved. Also... it did make me consider getting an iPhone, but then I looked at iTunes on a friends computer and my resolve not to get one was strengthened. In the end, the deal is that...

Yep, EN works best as a dump place of lose info bits, for me. ON I use for structured info (documenting work projects esp.). Too, it's the value-over-time. You've been building in ON for a long time, hence you have tremendous value back
- Ruud Hein
You know you can open a note in a separate single editor window right? That's not what you mean by "notepad-style file"? As for the phone use, since I now have an Android G1 and no longer the nice Windows mobile app I've had to make do with Evernote Mobile website and posting via email (for pictures). It's not ideal but it works fine and still lets me have access to things on my phone. There's no perfect solution. I think there's possibilities with Evernote's API if I could find time to write a client!
- Lindsay
Yea, but it doesn't work the same as OneNote's does. I can just hit Windows+N and pop up a little window that is pretty much advanced notepad. It works great. The pop-out window in Evernote (which you have to use to get to the unordered list button) isn't nearly the same. The Evernote website scales down to your G1 well? I'd love to see someone do something really unique with Evernote's API, I think it has a lot of potential.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
I agree there are several limitations that make Evernote worse than OneNote for capturing and searching notes... but OneNote doesn't run on Mac or iPhone or easily sync across multiple devices.
- Jon Price
Jon, I guess you are right, but for an all Windows user like me, that's not something that really matters to me.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
I'm liking Evernote for a lot of reasons but it does have weaknesses. I won't commit to it until they have encryption at the notebook and note level (currently you can only encrypt a selection). Also, ease of notetaking needs to be improved. I want a pop-up window that I can stickpin on top of all other windows.
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
I also want hierarchical notebooks so I can organize them.
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
@Rod - Those three very things are the main reason I can't convert over from OneNote to Evernote. OneNote has them all, Evernote does not.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
Let me sum this up for you Aram... you don't like evernote... you love onenote and no matter how good evernote is, you are a onenote zealot... I have read all of your posts above and it is clear as a bell that you dont WANT to give it a chance... you WANT to hate it... you WANT it to fail...

but the fact is, outside of academics on windows that have been using onenote since its inception, more people are signing up for and switching to evernote each day than those staying with or starting with onenote each month! I hate the text editor, though.

If I used nothing but a single Windows machine, I'd use OneNote. But I don't - I use several machines and several platforms. I just throw anything I need to remember on there then sort them out later.

Ahsan, that's really what the FF-Feedback group here is for, so feel free to comment. :-) The FFRequest group is Petr's.

Ahsan, just for you I've created this: http://beta.friendfeed.com/friendf... but I think there is already perhaps too many groups for such posts. Just noticed that Reader now allows grouping of people you follow! Wondering: is Reader going to become a competitor (instead of complement) to FriendFeed?
- Chris Rogers
@rogersdc / Chris, Google Reader is obviously been trying to become more social, but I'd really like to see FF come out with a bookmarklet that makes sub'ing RSS feeds to FF easier/faster. If you want to import your Facebook status, you must have "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" checked on the "Status Updates" custom privacy setting at http://www.facebook.com/login.... This is the default, but a few people have customized it away.
I think that's fine JA. They key is to have the "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" checkbox checked (the one right above the red bar in the second screenshot). That dialog appears when you select "Customize..." from the "Status Updates" pulldown on the first screenshot.
- Paul Buchheit
Wow, that totally fixed my issue. Thanks, Paul (and FriendFeed)!

Sorry - this doesn't work. I have that box checked. Unimpressed.
- Mathew
Matthew, Facebook has been through at least one major redesign since this entry was posted on 21st October. Anyone help Matthew in getting his FB imported in FF?
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol is correct, Facebook has changed their interface since these instructions were posted. Unfortunately, they seem to have eliminated the "Status Updates" RSS feed entirely. If you can find it, let me know.
- Paul Buchheit
The feed itself can't be gone - people who added it to FriendFeed before Facebook's UI changed are still having updates pulled in here. But as far as finding it now to add it...I've been unsuccessful. And modifying the URL of a working feed doesn't seem to work, either.
- Jandy
Yes, the RSS feeds still exist at some level, but the UI for discovering their secret urls seems to have been removed.

I'd love to know what the FFers think about all the changes that Facebook seems to be doing lately.

I wonder if I should repost this to a room and if so which one?
- Michael Fidler
I know generally how to make these 360 panos but the only technique I know is shooting from a tripod where you have control of the leveling of the camera and control of the angle of shooting. You have to manipulate out the tripod out of the picture after shooting -- these I have no idea, http://radio.weblogs.com/0127028... is a QTVR one of my living room
- Brian Sullivan
All the fisheye does is cut down on the number of shots you need to take -- if it goes 180 in both directions two shots are nominally sufficient on a full frame camera - usually 3 though but that is only if all are shot with the same horizon and with precise angular placement. How you control this in a moving helicopter is beyond me. Maybe more than one camera ? In shots like these where parallax is less of a problem maybe that is the method used
- Brian Sullivan
This must be shot completely differently than a stationary panoramic. I'm familiar with the 8 shot method, but the camera needs to be on a tripod as Brian mentioned. If you watch these images load slowly, they look like plates. It sort of reminds me of photosynth, but connected somehow. Now, I really want to find out how it's done.
- Michael Fidler
I think regular stationary panoramas are loaded as "plates" (at least you export them that way to edit them) as well so I am not sure that is a clue as to how they were generated.
- Brian Sullivan
If I email them, do you think they'll answer? Hi, I was just curious; what’s your secret? You never know. It might be worth a try:)
- Michael Fidler
That one is done from a tripod or monopod of some type it appears -- you can see if you look down the footprint has the logo on it.
- Brian Sullivan
Ya, I noticed one that had the logo above it. May they use it when photoshop doesn't do the job perfectly.
- Michael Fidler
Logos like that are used to hide the footprint of the tripod or other -- sometimes it can be a lot of work create a shot to cover the spot (or to fill it in using a bitmap editor) so it is just masked.
- Brian Sullivan
OK, check out this one http://www.pixelcase.com.au/vr... and go into planet view. It's the P next to the directional controls. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Shot off a reflective globe maybe.
- Michael Fidler
The "P" gets you the "polar view" -- a standard view that can be created from any 360/180 panorama so that is not a clue as to how it is done either from what I can determine (http://www.flickr.com/groups... is a flickr group dedicated to such polar views)
- Brian Sullivan
I've seen them many times before and wondered how they were made, too. This guy has some examples and apparently he uses a 10.5mm lens and then maps them into shape: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- Michael Fidler
Yes the 10.5 is a Nikon fisheye lens -- I use a Peleng 8mm fully manual fisheye -- more suited to my budget. When shooting with tripod you need a parallax correction jig as well -- I use the Nodal Ninja -- which is a reasonable quality low end device.
- Brian Sullivan
I was on the Hugin site a few months ago and I found a video that demonstrates how to use the jig. It didn't mention helicopter shots though. In fact, the video was very particular about not having any movement. I think it's time to ask them.
- Michael Fidler
Yeah I have seen a number of these panoramas that seem to defy logic. Peter Murphy (who is a pioneer in this type of stuff) has a number of puzzling ones - http://www.mediavr.com/manlyai... (needs Quick time) for example. His weblog has tons of others as well _http://www.mediavr.com/blog/
- Brian Sullivan
@briansullivan I went to an event last night where I came across something that might explain how these are done. If you check out the picture I shot of the equipment; it uses a reflective dome to capture the entire shot all at once and then processes it almost instantly afterwards. http://bit.ly/qD0dn . It basically comes out looking like a globe or a planet before it is processed. Once processed it look like a full panoramic just like the ones here, but in lower resolution.
- Michael Fidler
I haven’t seen the digital version yet, but the guy who owns this company told me they would be much sharper than the prints which they give out at the event. I also asked him about the helicopter shots, and he wasn’t sure about compensating for movement, but he didn’t see it as a big problem either. Mystery solved?
- Michael Fidler
I don't see this lens/device as "the" answer. Other similar devices have a reputation for low optical quality and low resolution. Peter Murphy almost certainly does not use such a lens. No serious panorama photographer that I have heard of uses anything like this.
- Brian Sullivan
I guess the search for an answer continues...
- Michael Fidler
Hi - I own Pixelcase and shot the tour of Sydney aswell as all development. Glad you like my work.
- pixelcase
Thank you, I'm glad you found this. I love your work. Based on the number of likes and comments for this post, I think it’s safe to say, I’m not the only one. It would be nice if you could enlighten us with some details about how these are made.
- Michael Fidler
Outstanding -- still no resolution on how it is done -- but I guess there is no reason why he should spill all his trade secrets.
- Brian Sullivan
Brian - No answer, and I can't blame him for wanting to keep it a secret. I guess that we have to just appreciate it for what it is. However, I'm already looking forward to whatever he does next!
- Michael Fidler
Poking around in panorama forums -the consensus seems to be that the pictures for these panoramas are shot with a multi-camera set up attached to an RC helicopter. The viewer is krpano - http://www.krpano.com/
- Brian Sullivan
John, thanks for sharing. Love it! Brian; I've always wanted a RC helicopter, but I still haven't gotten around to buying one yet. However, the picture from the one in the video is great.

In order: Calisto, Europa, Jupiter, Io, Ganymede and to the southeast IOT Cap - HIP105515. This is a composite of two pictures taken one after another at 560mm and at two different exposures placed on a black background and cropped. Some resolutions may see this edit. No other post processing was done to any of these incredible celestial bodies. Pictures taken 10/25/09 @ 7:54pmEST
- Carlos Ayala
Very nice. I've been trying to just get Jupiter and the moon these past few weeks.
- Anika
Sweet! It looks really clear. What did you set the white balance at? I know this is converted black and white and all, just wondering what kind of color info the lens/sensor were able to register for Jupiter.
- TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
@Anika they should be in your southern sky for most of your night and a wide angle will get them both together in the frame. the only problem is capturing any detail in both at the same time is virtually impossible.
- Carlos Ayala
If I didn't live on the other side of the continent (and had half the money) I'd go in halves on a GEM. Keeping the camera on Jupiter at that kind of magnification with a crappy tripod is a bear.
- TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
Oh, I can see them randomly. That's not the problem. It's actually shooting them where they're not blogs of white. I was going to do what you did and stitch together two photos, but the moon pics I've taken have been unusuable.
- Anika
@Adrian WB is almost always on Auto for these shots. If i am doing long exposures of starscapes in polluted skies i may do Tungsten. and I never convert to B&W. The shot of Jupiter is straight on shot @ 0.8 Seconds F8.0 ISO 1600. The Moon was shot @ 1/30 ISO 100. Both @ 560mm on a tripod.
- Carlos Ayala
@Anika you have to keep in mind that what you see of the Moon is sunlight. Always shoot it at ISO100, as though you were shooting in daylight. The actual speed will vary between 1/30 - 1/200, as an example. The shutter speed is dependent on position in the sky and type of moon, for the most part.
- Carlos Ayala
@Anika to stitch them, all i did was open both of them in photoshop and place them side by side in a new file. Since i wanted an accurate representation of position in the sky i moved the Moon to where it is in relation to Jupiter. This created a gap. The gap was easily fixed by making the background black. So, 3 layers: black background, the Moon and Jupiter and its neighbors.
- Carlos Ayala
So I shouldn't be getting color data on Jupiter at this magnification? I'm probably seeing chromatic aberration from the lens. You saw my photos... the colors on Jupiter and it's glow would switch up depending on how I had the white balance set. Strange, I guess I should look this up.
- TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
the only way to get any color data at this this magnification is if you track it using a GEM while taking many many many exposures at different lengths and later stacking the frames. If i had to guess, what you (and I) are picking up is actually reflected sunlight.
- Carlos Ayala
Crazy! The rovers on Mars shoot like that too. They have filters for the various color wavelengths and they piece the color photos together from these. I want a mount... and filters. :D
- TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
Oh it's not just color wavelengths they go for it's chemical wavelengths. They can identify chemistry on visible objects with the technique.
- TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
as for the canon's you can either purchase a modified camera for astrophotography, have your current canon permanently modified, add a filter above the sensor yourself or just wing it like i do. these filters cut out the wavelengths that produce the chromatic aberrations you mentioned and high pressure sodium and mercury light pollution. a GEM and a 800mm telescope with t-adapter is on my Christmas list for sure.
- Carlos Ayala
Dude, I have an Oly OM-1MD! In the 70's it was *the* astro-photography camera. ;) It was one of the main reasons I got it. It has mirror lock-up for vibration-free images. Since I don't have a long lens for it, I'm thinking I should just get a telescope with a mount, and an adapter for the camera. But for now it's just a dream.
- TINY REPTILIAN PYROMANIAC
haha yeah man i know the camera, i forgot you had that beast. awesome. unfortunately we are really limited as to what we can realistically photograph without a GEM. we are basically limited to the Moon. all deep sky objects require a GEM at the very least and a decent (fast) lens or telescope. look at this way my 560mm shot is effectively 896mm on my crop (if i have the math right) and thats the best i can do with what i have.
- Carlos Ayala

@Dennis - In case you weren't aware, the handle Crash Override is from the movie Hackers with Jonny Lee Miller, Matthew Lillard and Angelina Jolie (with Fisher Stevens as the evil corporate hacker and Penn Jillette in a small role as his assistant). Although much of it was ridiculous from a technology perspective, it was still a really fun movie with a fantastic soundtrack (the soundtrack itself actually has two sequels).

They seem reasonably comfortable -- April wears hers all over the place. I only wear them when running, but it seems easier than regular shoes. Yup, toe socks. Here's what happened last time though ("classics" with no socks): http://friendfeed.com/paul...
- Paul Buchheit
Just watch out - they provide no protection in the front. I stubbed my pinky toe and broke it. Still not fully healed, 2+ months later
- Paul Haahr
from iPhone
Well, I'm often in flip-flops or barefoot much of the time, so it's probably not much worse on the protection front. What did you kick?
- Paul Buchheit
A curb. Flip-flops and sandals usually stick out a bit in front of your toes, so I found the vibrams more dangerous. Versus barefoot, I hadn't internalized that they weren't shoes sufficiently.
- Paul Haahr
from iPhone
Ouch. If I understand "barefoot style" running though (and I probably don't), your feet should be dragged forward, not kicked forward (momentum vs muscle), which should also lower impact if I do accidentally kick something.
- Paul Buchheit

Where is this FriendFeed in-crowd I keep hearing about and what do I have to do to to get into it? I'm sick of not having any comments or likes on my junk. I think I'm just going to quit FriendFeed.
See what I mean? This was posted 12 minutes ago and only has 6 likes and 6 comments. If I was part of the inner circle of FF, it would have a bajillion likes and comments already. This site is just a popularity contest.
- Rah-PM 2012
LMFAO! I know you did not just unlike my post...LOL! I'll have to remember that technique in the future. Too funny.
- Rah-PM 2012
With the current state of the economy, I believe you forgot the new policy: you have to pay $1 for every like or comment. :)
- imabonehead
Well, that just proves this site is a rip-off. I'm going back to MySpace
- Rah-PM 2012
i would say something, but was told too never argue with the coach
- chaz2b
You cannot smite me. You may be the God of FF, but I am Rah, God of the Sun. I am unsmiteable, my friend.
- Rah-PM 2012
Oh, hey now, omnipotent sun God. I don't comment more, because I'm not at all sure that FriendFeed is ready for (some of) my opinions. I mostly lurk on FF, but I'd miss you if you weren't here.
- Yvette Ferry
So you're saying I'm part of the inner circle of FF, Rahsheen?? I get pretty good responses, but I'm nowhere near the most popular person here. I think they key is *pictures*. You haven't posted any in a long time.
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Pictures, Kamilah? How long do you think it would take us to learn to draw like you?
- Bruce Lewis
Oh, just for the record, I was totally kidding here because, once again, I was seeing a bunch of "Woe is me, nobody is liking my junk" threads and I just don't understand why people complain about this type of thing on FF, but it seems they just shut up and deal with it everywhere else.
- Rah-PM 2012
I think it's probably because it's more noticeable on FF. On Twitter, no one else sees how many @ mentions other people get. However, on FF, you see everyone's comments to every person you're following (on top of that, you see the entire thread when someone you're following comments on someone else's post). It makes it more obvious that you're not as popular as other people. Some of us...
- Curdy G
And those who whine about it become even less popular. I love those who put up content that is interesting, engaging, entertaining... If the only reason folk are on twitter, FF or other social media is straight-up, self-centred marketing. they bore me and get deleted. I'm good with a balance, but all marketing and score keeping without sincere content leaves me cold.
- Fossil Huntress
Hmmm. Wolf. We can't see the "bunch of threads" you see. FYI.
- Yvette Ferry
You get into the "in" crowd by being here a lot, posting interesting stuff and being an active part of the conversation. But you already knew that, lol
- LANjackal
How come Coach of FF quit in this way? ;)
- Ashish
I was just kidding. I'd never quit for such a silly reason :)

searcing for a specialist to decide that those are fake or real drawings :)
- Burçak Çubukçu
Peter can I send you some of the originals? We might as well find out the truth. I'm curious about a couple of them.
- Michael Fidler
I'am a sceptic. If those are real drawings. Somebody has to prove it. Is there a video link that some one actualy draw one of these for instance?
- Burçak Çubukçu
Just to show you Burçak, that I'm curious about the truth also, I've done a little investigating myself. I found the original picture from which the Jesica Alba drawing is copied. http://bit.ly/gAXX
- Michael Fidler
how'd you get Johnny Depp to sit still for so long?
- Nathan Rein
Michael, I do belive in "PHOTOSHOP". Anyway thank you for your efforts.
- Burçak Çubukçu
Burçak Çubukçu I think I'm leaning a little in your direction now. After overlaying the two images, they're practically identical. There is a tiny difference on the ruffle of her dress, but otherwise they are the same. To be honest, they "could" be photoshopped!
- Michael Fidler
ok Jessica Alba's could be a drawing...
- Burçak Çubukçu
drawing photo-realistically isn't hard when you're copying a photograph. they're probably real but not really art. Just great artistic skillz.
- JoEllen
Naturally the celebrities had to come from some type of original work, and a photo is the most likely candidate. I am starting to notice some small texture differences, especially in the one with Johnny Depp. BTW, I found the original for that too. It's on the cover of the DVD for the movie.
- Michael Fidler
@The Other Brian (Norwood), You cold be right, and perhaps that explains why some of the detailed work was left out on the Johnny Depp piece. Here's a link to a few more, which are more obvious, but still came from the same set http://bit.ly/tklrX
- Michael Fidler
I own a book called "How to Draw Lifelike Portraits from Photographs" by Lee Hammond. It shows all the techniques and phases of creating something like this in pencil and graphite. So... Yes, it is possible. If you ask me, though, this is an artform best left to the ADD set.
- Angela
Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found a different posting, which proves these are all pencil drawings. I had my doubts about a few of them, because they were collected from several locations. The site Kol found has done a wonderful job pulling together an even more impressive collection .Take a look. http://www.flickzzz.com/2009...
- Michael Fidler
No worries, Michael. :-) Shame we couldn't find all the artists.
- Kol Tregaskes
Thank's James!!! Actually I've been waiting for two month's for someone to bring these back up. Since I posted them in March, I've not only discovered who all three of the artists are, but found some new one's as well. I'm going to look for info on the artists, and post it. Could you please pop-up the other one as well? I would prefer to post it there. It's the one with a bear, lion, and I believe a tiger on it. Thanks again!
- Michael Fidler
James, I just saw the post you left on the other set. Sorry I missed it. For the record, I always knew that these were copies of photographs. I ran them through TinEye before posting anything in the hopes of discovering the artists. In the comments, several people correctly pointed this out as well. However, it still doesn’t diminish the quality of the work.
- Michael Fidler
"Real-time updates have become an important aspect of the social Web that make it easier to share with friends. In March, we introduced a real-time News Feed to make the stream as relevant and engaging as possible for users. Similarly, FriendFeed, which we recently acquired, built their entire site to support real-time updates. It hasn't been easy to build and scale these features, so today we're open-sourcing a core piece of infrastructure called Tornado, which was originally developed by the FriendFeed team."
- Bret Taylor
from Bookmarklet
Facebook's garden is so completely walled, that any video you take there is automatically private. It must drive Robert Scoble crazy when he shoots there.
- Bruce Lewis
Thanks for unprivatizing it Steve! (edit: wow 51 minutes!)
- Chris Heath
This makes me feel that no more efforts will be made to improve FriendFeed once their current load is done. This is the first time I've felt like that - I'd love some confirmation one way or the other, especially from a development standpoint. Do we continue writing software for FriendFeed, or should we focus all our efforts towards Facebook now?
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, to me it sounds like paul was saying FF will take a back seat to FB in priority. I'm only 13 minutes into the video, but so far that seems to be what he's saying.
- Chris Heath
Even if the guts of FF make it into FB, there's no way that the interfaces will stay the same. The FB API and the FF API are like apples and oranges. So, developing anything on top of the FF interfaces at this point doesn't seems kind of pointless.
- Carter ♥ HTML5
Bob, I really enjoy developing for Facebook. And they've shown it's getting much better.
- Jesse Stay
Bob, we don't go anywhere... stay here.
- Chris Heath
Bob, I think you'll see a lot of what FriendFeed is doing further integrated into Facebook. I'd love more confirmation on what these guys will be doing within Facebook though so I can be more assured. That said, I know the guys at Facebook and I trust the direction they're going. It's just a bigger network to do that with, so unfortunately it will happen slower and more carefully.
- Jesse Stay
FriendFeed is awesome just as it is... if there were no more features added I would be just as happy... as long as FF stays online.
- Chris Heath
Bob, Facebook isn't that much of a walled garden - yes, you can make it a walled garden, but they are opening up, little by little. Pages, for instance, are completely public.
- Jesse Stay
Bob, you're getting ahead of yourself here and making assumptions. Let the dust settle and see what happens.
- Chris Heath
Bob, yes - that's the concern. However, when I say slow, I mean they just have more features to release and improve because they have much, much more features than Twitter or FriendFeed. They're still launching new things weekly, often several times a week.
- Jesse Stay
Bob, they don't have plans to kill FF any time soon. My hope is just that they either continue updating FF or push the efforts they were going to put towards FF and put that towards Facebook. I'm guessing the latter will happen.
- Jesse Stay
Lots of smiles from Paul. Better quality than that brunch interview. :D
