Really no idea why they chose this route. I don't think it extends replay - if anything you're less likely too. I know I'd be annoyed if I'd been playing as a level 20 & then have to go back to being killed by cave rats

Yeah. It sort of makes it linear, which is an anti-thesis to the entire game/RPG theme. When I found out about it, I restarted the game and have purposely avoided the main quest...shouldn't really have to do that.
