Ok, Twitter is design retarded. Why do they make the content block centered on the page but only give you the option to put a background in that's left aligned??? It makes a good design nearly impossible because you don't know what the user's resolution will be. If they allowed you to center the background image you could make cool backgrounds...

... that would reveal themselves around the main content as the browser was resized. As it is now, my client is saying they can't see anything because they're not using a browser on a decent sized monitor even though I used a standard template for the object placement. It would be so easy for Twitter to just offer that one tiny option to center your background image.

good point, ive just accepted sites design negligence. i usuallly resize /save/upload my pics 6 or more times before i'm happy with them. also your point is 1 reason i mainly use friend feed

I used a standard template for the first design and it looks fine on 1280x1024 but I will have to use the template for 1024x768 I guess.... so much smaller...

i try to get the biggest pic possible that sites will allow my to upload, so i spend a lot of time dealing with those issues. maybe design your own site that you an make perfect and use social networks to redirect to the content on your site. then u can really master the art of design and have everything exactly how you want it, just a thought

I'm with you. Now I design Twitter backgrounds for an HD screen (1920x1080), but I make sure it looks okay when its shifted to 1024x768. A centering option would make it so much easier.

I'm with you, just finished doing two backgrounds yesterday and it sucks because at 1024x768 there's not enough space to use around the content box. Getting information across only becomes viable at 1280x800 upwards. Also, not being able to center the image around the content means that it is necessary to create backgrounds up to HD size so that you can accommodate everybody's resolution. Serious Twitter FAIL!

Great article - we all definitely have a tendency to focus on the next shiny new tool/site, but it's the discussions/relationships and how they are changing that is the revolution.

Agree that the focus needs to be on improving the relationship with customers/employees. There will always be a new tool. Changing the culture in enterprises to allow these dynamic conversations to happen is still a big problem. Realizing that this is not limited to just the PR department is huge for many companies.

Thanks for the great summary. I wholeheartedly agree. I must say I have been very surprised at the level of trepidation that people who are just starting out with corporate social media participation bring to the process. For my part, I council them that changing the culture of their organization to bring more authenticity and immediacy are the most important factors. Introducing social media to a company is a perfect way to get a snapshot of the level of fear within an organization.

A friend of mine started using DestroyTwitter instead, and likes it a lot. http://destroytwitter.com It's no TweetDeck at this point, but a number of features--including groups--are apparently in the works. I like it and am using it full-time now instead of TD (anxiously awaiting groups...). Does not have laconi.ca/identi.ca support (yet?). Developer is responsive, seems smart, app seems well written and is actively under development.

It's because of my dislike of AIR that I've been thinking about writing a desktop client for Twitter. It would essentially be a rip-off of TweetDeck. Mac-only of course.

@Steven I don't suggest that you accept "developer lackadaisical coding," hence the reason to stop supporting it. I like good apps just like the next guy, but another issue that I had with it was the lack of mobility. As I move from one computer to another, there is little I could take with me. I found that I had to reset my user preferences on each computer. With a web-based app, I don't have too. If you like TweetDeck or Twhirl, by all means keep using it, but as an alternative...

The solution is .NET, thanks to the Mono project. It's no slouch in the resources department itself, but it never goes to the extremes that AIR does, so long as you use WinForms or Gtk#. And the same executable! can be used on Windows, Linux, or OSX, just like that.

@andy Yeah, WinForms isn't fun to work with, but it's certainly much more efficient, at least memory-wise, than dealing with WPF. As well, WPF doesn't work on Mono, and Gtk# doesn't come by default with Microsoft.NET. It's a lowest common denominator, though, which is enough reason for most people to use it for anything that exists on more than just Windows.

@Akiva Mono's implementation of WinForms makes applications continue to look like they were run on Windows. However, the window frame (title bar, icon, min/max/close, etc) is platform-specific, so it'll look appropriate for each platform.

Every AIR app I've run on my computer has leaked like a sinking ship, not just TweetDeck. I'm prone to believe its a framework problem, although I won't absolve TweetDeck itself of all blame.

The current iPhone has multiple processors. It has 3 ARM chips in it. 3G may have the ARM multi-core chips. Not sure. The power draw isn't the processor, it is the network, screen and GPS. This is why it lasts longer when that stuff is off.

@Allen The FF / Mahalo connection I see is that both aggregate user-submitted content. Even if the content shared by a user on FF is that of a link to a story from a traditional news source (versus a bloggers perspective piece, for example), the ability to add commentary very much makes it a "human discovery engine" (Mahalo).

Google is one of the top places that people turn to to find information out about products today. FF is essentially building social search disguised as an aggregation service. I actually feel the only way FF is 'part' of journalism/PR is using it as this example. PR people can post updates on client/company news, and have interactive commentary with interested parties. Similarly, journalists can post stories in progress and gain feedback/ideas from the outside world. Just as you have done here. :)

it's a dramatic change for the press. No longer are they confined to corp.reports press offices and senior level interviews for the "facts" with corp. bloggers and others spewing opinions and data. The risk is we are already seeing the blurring of lines between commentary, opinions and "real journalism" (hold your attacks). The old editorial checks and balances are rapidly giving way to a much looser, faster--and more interesting--form of "news" delivery (i was a writer for BusinessWeek in a former life)

It's not intended to be the final destination, but rather a starting point for folks. Allen Stern calls what we do "scraping" but that's not accurate. it really puts a spotlight on the fact that journalism is a process - not a product. We have forgotten that journalism is a series of steps: collect, filter and distribute - information. Sites like FriendFeed enable journalism without the media. I found out about Tim Russert's death via Twitter. It wasn't "media" - it was just people living their lives and sharing information. It's news without newspapers, journalism without media, etc.

There have already been social and financial shifts. Twitter played a role. FF will be larger over time (in m opinion). CNN chatter head busted out with "that was the worst speech I've ever heard" at some point tonight. Even Republican strategist had to concede McCain's speech was just awful. Hard to imagine it being any more awful than it was.

For the heck of it, flipped to Fox to see their spin, and even after that extraordinary moment where he called for the end of polarization, the first words out of their mouths were, "But Pastor Wright...."

@Karim: Actually, according to my sources, Chris is exactly right. I'm told she will concede the math, but not the race, tonight. Obama will declare himself the nominee, but unless something changes pretty quickly, she will not echo that language.
