Robert Scoble
People who say you can't follow and interact with tens of thousands of people need to sit next to me for a while. #140conf
it's all about the tools, baby! - Dan Parsons
Robert: I certainly can't, as it's merely another part of my day-to-day job. And a small one at that. I do try to interact with as many as I can on behalf of our company, but tens of thousands would likely warrant dedicated person/s (for us, anyway) - Nick Wade
I don't say *you* can't; I say *I* can't. I can't even keep up with the 400+ I follow. - Mistletoe Glen
Another thing I have a hard time explaining to friends. Tools & different personalities make a difference. Everybody has different styles, preferences and purposes. - phil baumann
Robert, you're a machine though! ;-) - Richard H
Maybe with 3 or 4 screens I might have a fighting chance, but tens of thousands would make my head spin. - Dave Martinez
practice helps to learn and develop the most efficient methods for your usage requirements - Mike Chelen
I believe following tens of thousands and interacting is possible. Still would like that seat for a few minutes. - Doug McCaughan
mixero sounds interesting for the groups/filtering stuff - i could see that being a helpful tool - waiting on my invite... - Nicholas Orr
Well, Mr. Crunch's accusations aside, I think the real question is whether or not you have time for anything else. - Mike Shields
Fire up your camera. We'll all sit by you. - Kreg Steppe
Always good to see video of how you do socialise to this number (and still are able to have a conversation as well as broadcasting one way which is the predominant style for those with large followings.) - Tom Tubbs
post some video of how you do it, Robert. - Chris Duffy
Yes, all of those famous videos, how about a day in the life of Robert Scoble. - Chris Patterson
How do you find the time to do it while doing your own work? Doesn't it get in the way sometimes? - Alvin
I think it's cool that some people interact with thousands. It is obviously a skill that requires work and a social media passion. If I was at the tech forefront - I'd love to do it just like the scobelizer - maybe it would even just come naturally. - Ron Hagenhoff from Nambu
I'm w/ Kreg.. make a video and show us how you manage your time and apps. - Ben Rodrigue
FriendFeed lists, TweetDeck groups, Techrigy SM2 monitoring - Susan Beebe
Scoble talks about how he tweets here - http://www.kyte.tv/scoblei... - Mike Bracco
Let the tools do the hard work for you. Real, functioning search is key. - Louis Gray
According to Chris Brogan, a meaningful online presence "might take as much as an hour to two every day," so there's hope for those of us who aren't Robert Scoble. http://friendfeed.com/chrisbr... - Bruce Lewis
Thinking there is a difference between interaction and attention: http://thomasknoll.info/post... Besides, Scoble, you're an anomaly. - Thomas Knoll
I interact with tens of thousands of customers all day, but I give them my attention one at a time. I think most people confuse the two. - Thomas Knoll
I would certainly love that seat. I'd also watch 'A day in the life of Robert Scoble' too! - Alex Hellstrom
Robert, if they don't like your cologne they can sit next to me *giggle* - Arleen Anderson
with the right tools, tens of thousands perhaps. hundreds of thousands? at what point does it get tough both theoretically and in practice I wonder? surely the tools can evolve further... - chad calease
I guess I just must be boring to you. You never notice my twits. Oh, maybe there's another reason. If you were *really* following me...... - Hummie
Oh, weird...just realized this makes me impacted by my own blog post and the Brandon Heath song -- give me a heart for the ones forgotten -- see...you have some incredible opportunities awaiting you....and I ask....what are you missing, Mr. Scoble? http://blog.hummiesworld.com/2009... - Hummie
Robert, has your feeling on this changed now that you have culled the number of people you are following on Twitter to 1400? - Doug McCaughan
web pages and printed word have allowed interaction among large numbers of people in the past as well, now the quality and speed of communication have also increased - Mike Chelen

Fa La La La Lindsay
Ok, Twitter is design retarded. Why do they make the content block centered on the page but only give you the option to put a background in that's left aligned??? It makes a good design nearly impossible because you don't know what the user's resolution will be. If they allowed you to center the background image you could make cool backgrounds...
... that would reveal themselves around the main content as the browser was resized. As it is now, my client is saying they can't see anything because they're not using a browser on a decent sized monitor even though I used a standard template for the object placement. It would be so easy for Twitter to just offer that one tiny option to center your background image. - Fa La La La Lindsay
Steven had me try Twitter when it first came out. I didn't tweet after three days. - Joel Robert Perez
I guess I'm going to have to make an ugly tiling background (they want photos in it) ugh. - Fa La La La Lindsay
thats the nature of design, any1 can paint a pretty picture, design is the art of applying that picture to a situation, ur right though, its difficult - echostreamer
But the way Twitter has it set up it's pretty much impossible... The hardest part of web design is trying to make something that looks good at different resolutions. But in most situations you at least have control over where elements are going to appear on the page. Twitter basically forces you into a one-win scenario when they could easily offer an option to open up a whole world of... more... - Fa La La La Lindsay
good point, ive just accepted sites design negligence. i usuallly resize /save/upload my pics 6 or more times before i'm happy with them. also your point is 1 reason i mainly use friend feed - echostreamer
i think i have a cool background, http://twitter.com/chaz2b whach you think? - chaz2b
I used a standard template for the first design and it looks fine on 1280x1024 but I will have to use the template for 1024x768 I guess.... so much smaller... - Fa La La La Lindsay
i try to get the biggest pic possible that sites will allow my to upload, so i spend a lot of time dealing with those issues. maybe design your own site that you an make perfect and use social networks to redirect to the content on your site. then u can really master the art of design and have everything exactly how you want it, just a thought - echostreamer
I'm with you. Now I design Twitter backgrounds for an HD screen (1920x1080), but I make sure it looks okay when its shifted to 1024x768. A centering option would make it so much easier. - Dennis O'Neil
@Echo Streamer - we already have a website... this is for Twitter... my client wants a presence there... and it needs to look nice and reflect the design of the website. I can't just ignore it since it's the whole point of the project. - Fa La La La Lindsay
Quote: "Twitter is retarded" fixed. - Geoff Schultz
I'm with you, just finished doing two backgrounds yesterday and it sucks because at 1024x768 there's not enough space to use around the content box. Getting information across only becomes viable at 1280x800 upwards. Also, not being able to center the image around the content means that it is necessary to create backgrounds up to HD size so that you can accommodate everybody's resolution. Serious Twitter FAIL! - Paul OFlaherty
Thinking about starting an online protest site to get them to add that feature! - Fa La La La Lindsay
+1 Lindsay - .LAG liked that
You mean people actually use twitter on the website? - dthree
People find people/organizations/businesses to follow on the website... from a marketing perspective it's very important what your page there looks like. - Fa La La La Lindsay
David 50% do! - Brian Hendrickson
My solution isn't perfect but it's not too bad: http://twitter.com/studiojoyli - Fa La La La Lindsay
that's funny. you put the answer before the question! - Mistletoe Glen
Well, the question was mainly "how do I get around Twitter's retarded left-alignment of the background and come up with something that looks good at different resolutions?" I guess I didn't ask directly though! - Fa La La La Lindsay
I think that works really well, Lindsay! It degrades nicely at smaller resolutions. Agree, though, Twitter could stand a lot of improvement on background customization. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Thanks, Jandy! - Fa La La La Lindsay

As Social Technologies Become Pervasive, Prepare Your Company - http://www.web-strategist.com/blog...
Great article - we all definitely have a tendency to focus on the next shiny new tool/site, but it's the discussions/relationships and how they are changing that is the revolution. - Stuart Miniman
Agree that the focus needs to be on improving the relationship with customers/employees. There will always be a new tool. Changing the culture in enterprises to allow these dynamic conversations to happen is still a big problem. Realizing that this is not limited to just the PR department is huge for many companies. - Elwin Witzke
Thanks for the great summary. I wholeheartedly agree. I must say I have been very surprised at the level of trepidation that people who are just starting out with corporate social media participation bring to the process. For my part, I council them that changing the culture of their organization to bring more authenticity and immediacy are the most important factors. Introducing social media to a company is a perfect way to get a snapshot of the level of fear within an organization. - Dan Parsons

Back then Twitter was three full time engineers and one ops guy. I remember those days. - Robert Scoble
Loving the different screenshots of twitter homepages.. I want that PPT - Dave Peck

Tweetie! Tweetie! Tweetie! - Michael Fortson
I dont think its being streamed. They do have video cameras here. So it must be available later I would think - Dave Peck
Dave: I thought about doing the video, but the bandwidth sucks. Like usual. - Robert Scoble
"We're over 45 employees, close to 70 with contractors." - Robert Scoble
They just said there are over 10,000 twitter API apps. - Andru Edwards
Now he's showing off Tweetie. "I'm proud to say that the developer is 'more than living off the sales of Tweetie.'" - Robert Scoble
TweetDeck, he says is an essential tool for many people. - Robert Scoble
Love the pic Robert! Great composition - Belinda Simcox (Sim)
No live feed, but we are recording the entire 140 conference, which will be available after. Nice and professional-looking. - Andru Edwards
I pretty much live on TweetDeck. - Bhavishya Kanjhan
CoTweet, he says, is being used by Twitter to provide support (I just met the CEO, will get him to give you a demo). - Robert Scoble
CoTweet is a tool that lets teams manage multiple Twitter accounts. - Robert Scoble
Now switching to show off news organizations that are using Twitter. - Robert Scoble
We're covering the event in a Whrrl story too, if you want to see a bunch of images and text updates: http://whrrl.com/e/fjL96 - Andru Edwards
"We have so much data that providing a nuanced view of it is not something we can do in house," Payne said. - Robert Scoble
Now showing off StockTwits to punctuate that point. - Robert Scoble
And TipToy, which lets you give and get money on Twitter. - Robert Scoble
I'm a TipJoy fan. - Andru Edwards
And of course, TwitPic - Andru Edwards
I'm a TweetDeck fan :) - Iain Dodsworth
Now moving on to the future. - Andru Edwards
Interesting new features, he says, are like what Disqus are using, to do an automatic login via OAuth to comment on a blog with single sign on. "That's just the beginning." Twitter wants to be the leader in portable identity. - Robert Scoble
Streaming API. It doesn't make sense for third parties to poll Twitter. Old way "do you have new data?" New way: get access to the firehose stream. - Robert Scoble
Heh, Hello Iain, nice to see you around here :) - Simon Wicks
Iain: I'll be in London in early July. Want to meet up there? - Robert Scoble
Streaming API that pushes rather than making tools poll constantly is coming. - Andru Edwards
OAuth. Expect more. "OAuth is our investment in ending what experts are calling the password antipattern." - Robert Scoble
very good to be here - been neglecting FF, but that will change shortly - Iain Dodsworth
Oh yeah? Is that a hint at something new? - Simon Wicks
Robert - definitely on for early July - just let me know, I have SOOO much to discuss :) we may have been quiet over here at TweetDeck... - Iain Dodsworth
Iain, cool. Can't wait to see what you do with TweetDeck. - Robert Scoble
Better support is where Twitter is focusing most of its efforts. - Robert Scoble
Robert - email or DM best way to stay in touch? - Iain Dodsworth
Friendfeed DM. Email scobleizer@gmail.com is probably best, though, cause I'd like to get others involved as well - Robert Scoble
Cool - I'll leave you to it - enjoying the live blogging - Iain Dodsworth
"Your personal identity leader" lacks a little when compared to "What are you doing?" - Todd Hoff
Slide now? "More consistent." He says that there's inconcistencies between data sets they are providing to various developers that they are going to be fixing. - Robert Scoble
Next slide? "More transparent." "If we have data, if we have statistics, if we have numbers interesting to the community we will be there." - Robert Scoble
heading to the Qik office -- thanks for the updates, Robert! - Michael Fortson
He is pitching a developer's bill of rights. Interesting. - Robert Scoble
They want to be very clear in future with a "bill of rights" that will tell developers what to expect in future from Twitter's API. - Robert Scoble
Summary of Future from @al3x: streaming api, OAuth, better support, more consistent, more transparent - warren sukernek
Warren: thanks, couldn't have said it better myself! - Robert Scoble
Any questions I should ask? - Robert Scoble
I like the idea of a developers bill of rights - Dave Peck
Robert is first to ask Alex a question..of course! - Dave Peck
Dave: of course! - Robert Scoble
API default going to be bumped from 100! - Dave Peck
Q&A: Will there be changes to the number of times a developer can hit the API? Answer: Limit is currently 100 per hour, and that will be bumped up. - Andru Edwards
I asked him the Jesse Stay question: will they give developers more access to the API (more requests per IP address). He said "yes." - Robert Scoble
Will devs be able to purchase premium levels of API usage to pass onto users of their apps? - Iain Dodsworth
Iain: just had Broback ask that. - Robert Scoble
interesting question Iain - what would you pay? - michael sean wright
Will the stream API be part of the existing REST API or a separate socket connection-type implementation? - Bryan Bartow
He answered: Thus far we are still a small company with limited resources so we ha've decided to focus on consumer focused monetization strategies. - Robert Scoble
nicefishfilms - i'd pay a lot :) and could offer many new services which are currently unfeasible - Iain Dodsworth
Iain: What would be the first feature/added service you would add if you had unlimited API calls? - Mike Bracco
Iain- your growth has proven you're on the right 'track' i would support a super version from you. - michael sean wright
Sounds like this #140tc conference will be big on Twitter relevant announcements, Scoble is FriendFeed-casting it here -> - Alex Schleber
Mike: would love to tell you but we're unfortunately now in the position where we have to protect our roadmap - which is a shame - Iain Dodsworth
nicefishfilms: thanks for the support :) - Iain Dodsworth
Robert: can you ask about twitter meme tracker ? Do they have an opinion on discovery vs. search ? - twitscoop
Iain: Gotcha :) Figured you might answer with that but I totally understand. Love your product (and the icon change a little while back :). - Mike Bracco
Do you think Alex can speak to other things regarding twitter other then development? Like how companies can get their brand name on Twitter vs squatters, etc.. - Dave Peck
Iain: I'm in marketing/branding and wonder how you guys think about your brand - In that you now offer Facebook support and I'm sure a bunch of other things down the line. Are you concerned that TweetDeck might be too limiting or do you believe that it's similar to the iTunes brand where everyone knows that iTunes is more than just music. - Mike Bracco
Dave: he said that he's there to talk about the API parts of Twitter and will defer other questions to other people. - Robert Scoble
twitscoop: I'll try, but I've already asked too many questions. - Robert Scoble
As long as the questions are meaningful, I don't think they won't allow you to ask ;) Thanks for trying! - twitscoop
Someone asked about what effect the Oprah effect has had on Twitter's team. They said they had to focus more on scaling out social graphs to big users. - Robert Scoble
People asked about metadata, especially when it comes to location. They said they just hired a person to do exactly that. Sounds like they are worried about Twinkle. - Robert Scoble
Mike: we should move this conversation to another place - Iain Dodsworth
He also made it clear that they are looking at adding other types of metadata to Twitter as well. Sounds like they are about to get serious about search. That makes a fundamental change in strategy, too. - Robert Scoble
Dave: Anamitra Banerji's, Twitter's Product Manager, keynote tomorrow morning is going to be all about Twitter from business perspective - Belinda Simcox (Sim)
More about this session is flowing in at http://friendfeed.com/search... - Robert Scoble
Robert, bit.ly is now the url short'ner of choice for Twitter, bit.ly is using Calais to extract smart data, thoughts? - michael sean wright
who do twitter want to buy! any acquisition potential out there and why? - Nigel Walsh
any plans to connect to other messaging platforms, eg Skype, MSN etc and become THE UC platform - Nigel Walsh
Iain: Ok, posted on FF http://bit.ly/QgqaI but no need to respond - I'm sure your busy following this stream. - Mike Bracco
Someone packing dSLR heat. Alex's presentation was great. next time bring a 300mm so you can stay seated LOL - Jim Goldstein
nicefishfilms: I don't have too many thoughts about the tiny URL folks. I am worried about the amount of power that we are giving them. The web works best when it's decentralized and everytime we choose to centralize again nasty stuff happens (look at Feedburner, for instance, and how it slowed everyone's feeds down for a while). - Robert Scoble
nicefishfilms: There was an interesting discussion about these services yesterday on this FF thread - http://bit.ly/iEOh2 - Mike Bracco
Robert- agree, am interested in the extraction in a split-second of what the that url points to (the meaning of the article.) Perhaps we'll see better clustering of info based on Calais. Could see a FriendFeed room set up to catch the bit.ly data. - michael sean wright
@ Mike, thank you. - michael sean wright
Jim: I'll have a 600mm F4.0 here this afternoon. :-) - Robert Scoble
nicefilms or Scoble: do you know of any services that give you that "split second" meaning but for twitter trends? I subscribe via RSS to http://www.whatthetrend.com/ because it's the only service I have found that gives you a human definition of the trend and not just tweets that mention the trend. - Mike Bracco
Ask him when I'll be able to retrieve all of Britney Spears followers without it erroring out :) - Jesse Stay
@ Mike - don't know if that exists yet... but would point you to http://opencalais.com and look for the semantic proxy. seems to be the closest. What i'm looking for is that real-time 'meaning' extraction organized, curated in a visually compelling way. (we can dream right?) - michael sean wright
I love seeing Iain here - one of my favorite developers. :-) Thanks for asking the premium API option - we all want it. I don't get why they can't provide it. - Jesse Stay
I wish I was here earlier - I have so many questions for them. :) - Jesse Stay
Hey Jesse, with you on that - let me pay for unlimited API access for the user (whilst retaining the inherent filtering the API provides) and we'll deliver some of our "dream" functionality :) - Iain Dodsworth
Discussing hootsuite w/ @iJustine, @davepeck, and missrogue - Tony Zanders
Search google for "xefer" and click on "projects" to see when a person tweets everyday. It's a Twitter API and Yahoo! Pipes mashup. The "When people sleep" utility. - Tony Zanders

thank god they are committed to ending the password antipattern - Jon

welcome to the world of AIR apps - Steven Hodson
the price you pay to use Adobe software - Bill
A friend of mine started using DestroyTwitter instead, and likes it a lot. http://destroytwitter.com It's no TweetDeck at this point, but a number of features--including groups--are apparently in the works. I like it and am using it full-time now instead of TD (anxiously awaiting groups...). Does not have laconi.ca/identi.ca support (yet?). Developer is responsive, seems smart, app seems well written and is actively under development. - abacab
It's because of my dislike of AIR that I've been thinking about writing a desktop client for Twitter. It would essentially be a rip-off of TweetDeck. Mac-only of course. - Akiva Moskovitz
I meant to add that the resources footprint is ridiculously smaller than TD, despite still being AIR-based. That may change, but the difference is night/day, and reason enough to change from TD for me, for now. - abacab
Beyond just resource mismanagement, I just don't like AIR-styled UIs. - Akiva Moskovitz
What's the point of AIR, exactly. To keep things uniform across platforms? You still have to hope that Adobe supports your OS, right? - Shawn Farner
I realized this not long after installing. As a result, I have moved over to a web-based app called peoplebrowsr.com. Give it a try! It has many of the same features a a few more that I think you'll like. - Damond Nollan
@Damond I don't mean to be rude but that's bullshit .. as neat as web-based apps might be there are those of us that *want* *good* desktop apps. Sloughing the problem off by suggesting we accept this kind of developer lackadaisical coding and if not happy use a web app is screwed up. - Steven Hodson
@Steven I don't suggest that you accept "developer lackadaisical coding," hence the reason to stop supporting it. I like good apps just like the next guy, but another issue that I had with it was the lack of mobility. As I move from one computer to another, there is little I could take with me. I found that I had to reset my user preferences on each computer. With a web-based app, I don't have too. If you like TweetDeck or Twhirl, by all means keep using it, but as an alternative... - Damond Nollan
The solution is .NET, thanks to the Mono project. It's no slouch in the resources department itself, but it never goes to the extremes that AIR does, so long as you use WinForms or Gtk#. And the same executable! can be used on Windows, Linux, or OSX, just like that. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Do apps have native interfaces when using Mono or do they all look like Windows apps? - Akiva Moskovitz
I wonder if it's that much of a hog on my Macbook - andy brudtkuhl
@chris - yes i've thought about building a twitter app with winforms but probably not worth the effort... plus I hate developing WinForms - andy brudtkuhl
@andy Yeah, WinForms isn't fun to work with, but it's certainly much more efficient, at least memory-wise, than dealing with WPF. As well, WPF doesn't work on Mono, and Gtk# doesn't come by default with Microsoft.NET. It's a lowest common denominator, though, which is enough reason for most people to use it for anything that exists on more than just Windows. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
@Akiva Mono's implementation of WinForms makes applications continue to look like they were run on Windows. However, the window frame (title bar, icon, min/max/close, etc) is platform-specific, so it'll look appropriate for each platform. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
@Josh - apparently it's a problem with Adobe AIR (correct me if im wrong). I had to kill the process to return my computer to normal - andy brudtkuhl
Facinating insight josh. It wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison even for a complete re-write from the API up. But would be a mighty intesting data point. - Roberto Bonini
We're still a while away from Silverlight's promise of cross-platform applications. Moonlight doesn't yet support Silverlight 2.0 applications, and is still pretty untested. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
right below the Tweetdeck line in @andy's screenshot above is Twhirl, also an AIR app...yet it's consuming less than 25% of memory in comparison. don't you think that suggests the problem is Tweetdeck, and not AIR, per se? - .LAG liked that
TweetDeck leaks memory over time. Eventually, if left on, it crashes my computer. It's TweetDeck, not AIR. - Robert Scoble

Every AIR app I've run on my computer has leaked like a sinking ship, not just TweetDeck. I'm prone to believe its a framework problem, although I won't absolve TweetDeck itself of all blame. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy

@Matthew...that's true. FF has "real time" and search...it's all right here. - .LAG liked that
@Matthew: I totaly agree with that. People also nag me for using Twhirl and saying Thwirl sucks. Maybe when they see that FF can do everything that TweetDeck can they will understand why I use Twhirl - Patrick from twhirl
yeah, tweetdeck has been slowing my computer down big time lately - Robert DeBord
Twhirl can be like that at times, if you have more than one account open. Right now I have my twitter, my rss account on twitter, my friendfeed and my rss account open on twhirl and I'm not lagging or anything. So Twhirl does a decent job with memory. - Patrick from twhirl

I am working on a post about the implication of Friendfeed, Mahalo and other human discovery engines on PR and journalism. Interested in your thoughts please share.
I liked and will comment later. There are deep implications at least in the way that I utilize them. I must get ready for the day job now. - Mathew A. Koeneker
In relationship to news delivery, I hope commentary and reporting don't become blurred. I spend a lot of time in FriendFeed reading, but I still go to traditional news outlets for fact verification. I worry that FriendFeed posts and re-posts, comments could become diluted - the Web 2.0 version of the telephone game. - Liana Lehua
you put friendfeed and mahalo together? - Allen Stern
@Allen The FF / Mahalo connection I see is that both aggregate user-submitted content. Even if the content shared by a user on FF is that of a link to a story from a traditional news source (versus a bloggers perspective piece, for example), the ability to add commentary very much makes it a "human discovery engine" (Mahalo). - Liana Lehua
would someone explain 2 me what Mahalo is. I get the feeling it had something to do with that Calacanis guy n I noticed it listed4example this morning all the newsoutlets coverage of Obama's headscarves censorship. http://www.mahalo.com/Obama_H.... It looks for topics and congregates them on the same page? Wouldn't a google search do that same thing? and why would friendfeed be mentioned in the same concept in this question? Why not just say that the technology has changed language and knowledge - Noah David Simon
Use Social Media to make the news not let Social Media control the news. We as Social Media journalists report the news to Mass Media! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
noah - easiest way to describe it - they scrape links off google (news, search, etc) and then add some text from the scraped links to create robust pages of content. - Allen Stern
I work in PR and the understanding of social media from clients is very thin. Having to explain to a client the importance of having a dialogue with their consumers on an ongoing basis and then needing to explain how much time it will take is quite a challenge. My role is changing, as is the role of PR, from acting on behalf of a company to encouraging companies to engage directly themselves. - PaulJohnson
friendfeed put me in touch with a lot of voices I had previously not even heard of. I wonder what it will do once it moves out of a small circle of people. - Günther Mulder from twhirl
Mahalo is a roach motel, last week I looked for Roadrunner computer on Google, Mahalo was the sixth result so I clicked....three Mahalo pages later I found my way to the IBM home page where I searched again. Now I have a blog post about Roadrunner, but does Mahalo know? - paul mooney
I'm thinking a new corporate position and title will emerge from all of this. Companies won't want to pay PR hours to monitor and post to the blogosphere and it WILL become a full-time job. Director of online communications? - Steve Poppe
Every marketer in the world should want to influence and monitor search when it comes to their product or service. Google is one of the top places that people turn to to find information out about products today. FF is essentially building social search disguised as an aggregation service. Social Search will have huge implications in the future. Savvy PR folk will use FF to both monitor and influence search with regards to their brands. - Thomas Hawk
Journalists want and need fast access to interactive information. FF provides a platform for that, re Marshall's discovery post yesterday, or in fact this very post of yours today Steve. Some early journalists like Chris Nuttall (FT) and Jessica Guynn (LATimes) are already building a presence here. More will come and it will be a resource that they can use to quickly poll and get quotes and source leads. - Thomas Hawk
seems like pr and journalism have very different needs. pr likes people to reuse teh message. to journalists, that's verging on plagiarism. - Seth Gottlieb from twhirl
If you're working in or covering the online community, FF can provide insight into what people are thinking, or can help you identify trends or sources. On the flip side, the potential danger is that since social media haven't hit the broader mainstream, relying on it too much can give you an "inside the beltway" view. - Dave Pelland
you are talking about Apples and Seeds and then asking about the relevance of fruit. friendfeed is a seed. Google is the fruit and Mahalo is the stupid packaging that makes it look snazzy in the store - Noah David Simon
While you working on yours, read mine! http://www.igorthetroll.com/blog... - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Another instance of precommenting. i liked that - Varun Mahajan
I actually feel the only way FF is 'part' of journalism/PR is using it as this example. PR people can post updates on client/company news, and have interactive commentary with interested parties. Similarly, journalists can post stories in progress and gain feedback/ideas from the outside world. Just as you have done here. :) - Jeremy Toeman
I certainly don't think that FF is going to replace PR - there is simply too much value in a compelling story delivered at the right time to be ignored, but I also think that the roles are about to get a lot blurrier, and people are going to find huge success utilizing this stuff to bring new products and services to market. - Eric Hamilton
Steve - I wrote a post along these lines: "Will Brands Figure Out FriendFeed?" http://bhc3.wordpress.com/2008... (I guess those would be my thoughts) - Hutch Carpenter
Hutch -- the bigger question is what does it mean to figure out Social Media for brands (especially big brands). Scoble can explain the Gary V. side of the equation and everyone will agree. There are metrics to support the case. Where are the metrics for determining if Comcast being on Twitter mattered? P.S. I'm asking for numeric documentation of success -- not speculation or emotional responses. Scoble may get misty-eyed at Gary V., but Gary V. could show you why it matters to him. I doubt Comcast can. - Robert Seidman
Seidman: or another case is HRBlock on Twitter. They saw enough goodness to come out of that. These things aren't really done for metrics, though. It's like "what's the metrics" of a press tour? Or a speech at a conference? Businesses do things all the time for a lot of reasons other than just pure ROI. - Robert Scoble
Comcast has metrics for their ROI on their PR team (quantitative AND qualitative). They don't have any quantitative analytics on social media. Until they do -- it's all kool-aide talk. what's more valuable to Comcast: three more people on ComcastCares or three more people on the phones? How do you measure and how do you decide? I think the answers to these questions are very worthwhile. I can't comment on H&R block since its primary business is capitalizing on people who are afraid of basic math - Robert Seidman
Look it is all about fine tuning the noise into the Signal. You really need to have the passion for this to work. We are redefining the marketing model. Explosion! Bang, Bang The Coke Machine Blown up in Cyber Space! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
it's a dramatic change for the press. No longer are they confined to corp.reports press offices and senior level interviews for the "facts" with corp. bloggers and others spewing opinions and data. The risk is we are already seeing the blurring of lines between commentary, opinions and "real journalism" (hold your attacks). The old editorial checks and balances are rapidly giving way to a much looser, faster--and more interesting--form of "news" delivery (i was a writer for BusinessWeek in a former life) - mark ivey
Paul: If you look at the road runner computer page you'll see it's a well written Guide Note with citations, tons of facts, and a GREAT place to start. It's not intended to be the final destination, but rather a starting point for folks. Allen Stern calls what we do "scraping" but that's not accurate. We actually select our links across many, many services and Google is the last place we really look to be honest. We need interesting links and places like stumble and delicious are the best places for those. - Jason Calacanis
jason, to some extent no matter where you are getting the links, it's still scraping the links, and it doesn't mean it's bad - of course what i like is that you link back and don't take the content - that's a good thing. - Allen Stern
10 years from now, each of us will be kicking out feed entries every time we blow our noses. FriendFeed is - to my mind - a way for people to get control of the feeds they generate and focus them toward a coherent narrative. - Rob Sterling
Jason, you saying Maholo works, but I will disagree with you. My travel agency Website that is 8 years old, in DMOZ, IATA registered is not in Mahalo, while some crappy non IATA agency is! You tell me how is Mahalo doing a good job? You just scraping not contributing to evolution and improvement of search. - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
it really puts a spotlight on the fact that journalism is a process - not a product. We have forgotten that journalism is a series of steps: collect, filter and distribute - information. Sites like FriendFeed enable journalism without the media. I found out about Tim Russert's death via Twitter. It wasn't "media" - it was just people living their lives and sharing information. It's news without newspapers, journalism without media, etc. - David Cohn
Allen, you know very well what scraping means... it means taking something not yours and doing no original work. We hand curate our results... they are all hand selected. Robots scrape... humans curate. - Jason Calacanis
I think it's interesting that Steve calls FF a 'human discovery engine' while it really is so much more. Journalism (and delivery vehicles) have already changed dramatically. There have already been social and financial shifts. Twitter played a role. FF will be larger over time (in m opinion). Traditional journalists need to learn and read (quick) or they will simply be downsized and replaced by more prolific writers (that know what they're talking about) right here on Friendfeed, and elsewhere. - Charlie Anzman
discovery = learning. FF, Twitter and similar ramp up my discovery, therefore increasing my rate of learning. - Paul Moss
Jason Calacanis many Social Media industry leaders are following me, but you are ignoring my concerns. We are not in Sheepshead Bay hanging out at your table with your friends in Kingsborough Community College.
