"Breaking news from the office of fallacies: People are fungible! Seriously speaking, however, money is a pretty major problem. It is hard not to feel unfairly treated when the lawyers working on translating your product into patentese make 5-6x per hour that you do. Of course, I have equity. I don't know how I'd feel were I an engineer, paid market rate, without it. Why is the market rate for engineers so low, compared with other professionals? Do they need a union? Negotiations class? What is it?"

I'm not that surprised about civil engineers. Every time I see a badly designed intersection (and I've seen too many of them), I'm convinced that trained monkeys could do a better job.

I received a phone call last year from an algorithmic hedge fund. They offered starting salaries of $300K, with potentially bonuses going up to $1M. If they had been in the Bay Area instead of New York City, I would have interviewed with them. As it is, I pointed a friend of mine to them instead. Seriously, that kind of money makes even Google's founders awards seem irrelevant.

Yeah, the financial world has also had a distorting effect on where bright economists go... I'm trying not to just be jealous of the fantastic amounts of money there, but it probably isn't a good idea for 20% of the nation's GDP to be generated in that sector.

Until as a society we decide that creating stuff that didn't exist before is more valuable than shuffling money around, we will continue to shunt smart people into those useless occupations. Talk about a massive misallocation of capital.
