VS Ramachandran on your mind | Video on TED.com - http://www.ted.com/talks...
The funny thing is, at the end, he talks about how it is a form of brain damage to be unable to pick up on metaphorical meaning. Then he says "now, we scientists can use neurology to discover the answers to all these questions philosophers have been wondering about for millenia!" Which is, of course, to entirely miss the point of all philosophy, as amazingly useful as it may be for... more... - Alexandria Brown

Study: No Shortage of U.S. Engineers - http://news.ycombinator.com/item...
"Breaking news from the office of fallacies: People are fungible! Seriously speaking, however, money is a pretty major problem. It is hard not to feel unfairly treated when the lawyers working on translating your product into patentese make 5-6x per hour that you do. Of course, I have equity. I don't know how I'd feel were I an engineer, paid market rate, without it. Why is the market rate for engineers so low, compared with other professionals? Do they need a union? Negotiations class? What is it?" - Danielle Fong
The fear of outsourcing? - Andrew C
Strictly speaking SW engineers in the US are *not* professionals. We're tradesmen. To understand why, check out this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - Michael R. Bernstein
I take it this is in reference to this story? http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily... - Andrew C
Though my comment extends to non-software engineers. The professional engineers, typically civil engineers, are among the least paid. - Danielle Fong
Andrew C, yes. - Danielle Fong
I'm not that surprised about civil engineers. Every time I see a badly designed intersection (and I've seen too many of them), I'm convinced that trained monkeys could do a better job. - Piaw Na
I received a phone call last year from an algorithmic hedge fund. They offered starting salaries of $300K, with potentially bonuses going up to $1M. If they had been in the Bay Area instead of New York City, I would have interviewed with them. As it is, I pointed a friend of mine to them instead. Seriously, that kind of money makes even Google's founders awards seem irrelevant. - Piaw Na
Yeah, the financial world has also had a distorting effect on where bright economists go... I'm trying not to just be jealous of the fantastic amounts of money there, but it probably isn't a good idea for 20% of the nation's GDP to be generated in that sector. - Andrew C
Until as a society we decide that creating stuff that didn't exist before is more valuable than shuffling money around, we will continue to shunt smart people into those useless occupations. Talk about a massive misallocation of capital. - Piaw Na
