I have six of them that open at once - techmeme, igoogle, hacker news, Analytics and G Reader and popurls - they change based on how and what I get from them. - Mrinal Desai
Mine is set to Google right now. Fast, and plain. - Sean Brady
Blank - I hate the delay of opening a homepage when I'm trying to get to a website. - Bill Sanders
Mark - act 3 on saturday!! (I think that may mean tonight at midnight). Ken - don't worry, especially during the summer, you aren't missing anything. Mike - huh, thanks for the pointer, gonna check it out. :) - felix
Act 3 should be coming out at midnight tonight. I'm loving it so far. My fiancee, being a huge Joss Whedon fan has already recorded the songs and is trying to write down the lyrics to memorize them. - James Ferguson
James... just to save your fiancee some time. :) http://imaekgaemz.com/?page_id... I was curious about Freeze Ray but too lazy to do the work myself and found this. :) Can't get the damn song out of my head. - felix
It's fun. I really liked the beginning of Part 1, when it was an actual video journal by Dr. Horrible. Hope we get back to that at some point. - Lon Harris via twhirl
I think it's fun. Cheesy at times, but doogie done good. - daniel morgan
I liked it. Fun approach to the superhero genre. Once the musical started it really came together. Liked the blog entry style. Didn't Josh Whedon also do a Buffy episode as a musical? - Larry Kless via twhirl
Dr. Horrible was a cute opera. Could definitely use more of those today - the format really works for YouTube. - Dossy Shiobara
Larry - yeah, Joss did Once More With Feeling, a musical buffy episode. I think I'm the only Buffy fan in existence that didn't love it. You can see echoes of those songs in some of Dr. Horrible's. - felix
I like it- nice to see something well-written. - anna
i totally loved it. the songs are still stuck in my head. especially the first one of the 3rd act, "look around, we're here amongst the lost and found..." - Brian Ries
Don't think this will pass, but the plant will always have a nickname... At least I hope it doesn't pass. @george it does make SF look childish. - daniel morgan
Hao - get thee to the nearest bookstore and snag a copy of "The Illuminatus Trilogy." No one on the internets should be fnord-deficient. - Tad - just Tad
Eric: my day was tiring. We changed a lot of things on WorkFastTV and doing a live show is always interesting (we film that at Revision 3) but before that I woke up at 5 a.m. and was in line with my son by 6:45 a.m. for an iPhone. In the afternoon I took a nap and now am trying to dig through things. Weather? Warm, typical California weather, pretty much perfect. - Robert Scoble
it's just overwhelming but I actually understand the hype. It's just made for a boring news day for the most part. - David Ward
I worked until 10, but took a break to enjoy the weather. I love living in California. - David Thomas
(instead of iPhone talk) I remember back when the Motorola Razr was hot. I still have one! - Morton Fox
For me the iPhone news isn't boring, it's just too repetitive, posts about the same thing over and over again. - Jeff P. Henderson
For me, its the fanboism that gets me. The iphone gets unfounded positive press like vista got unfounded negative press. Apprently if you can make the a-listers feel special they will have a wide influence. But in almsot every detail, the iphone is a seriously crippled device. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
Soulhuntre: I have two Nokias and a Microsoft Windows Smart Phone sitting in front of me. They all suck compared to the iPhone. I have no idea what planet you live on, but the iPhone is a far superior experience for phone and Web to all the other smartphones out there. - Robert Scoble
yeah i'm taking a break from the internet. holding out for the google phone. - daniel morgan
@Robert He's probably referring to minor details like Bluetooth stacks (A2DP, OBEX, etc.), no Flash, etc. Since I got my iPod touch last week, I've been craving an iPhone and if I had the opportunity, I would drop my BlackBerry like a rock if I could get AT&T service at my house, but for the time being, the BlackBerry/iPod touch combo suits me well. - Zach Flauaus
What Steven said :) As someone who streamed the 1.5 block line at the Apple store on Stockton in SFO earlier today, I am in total agreement. So glad I'm not getting one for now. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I can't get enough of it! My new 16gb white is amazing! - Granteezy
iPhone talk: I think I'll stick with my 'old' Nokia N72, with this so old 'Symbian S60' ;) - Thierry R. Andriamirado
Scoble: Windows Mobile sucks... Symbian is okay, but not that great... Have you tried BlackBerry? The UI isn't as nice as iPhone, but it can even do some things that iPhone can't, like copy/paste, MMS, Voice-activated dialing, has expandable memory, and the web browser in the newest (4.5) OS version is actually competent. Not as good as Safari, admittedly, but I'd say it takes second place. Also, in the next version of the desktop software, it will sync with iTunes :) - David
Scoble, I love your posts but its so freaking wrong to have to watch your shaky cellie-cam on Qik. Zero production value, bro. - Aaron deMello
Aaron: it might have zero production value but this video would never have been filmed if I had to put my HD camcorders into it. First of all, I didn't know I was going to do it until right before it happened. Second of all if I had to get Rocky there, setup all the equipment, the moment would have been lost. Third of all, even if I had done it on HD it would be three weeks before you'd get to see it. So, now you get to choose. Would you rather see this with crappy quality or not see it at all? - Robert Scoble
As always, I vote for crappy video of cool stuff versus a post that says "Hey, I saw some cool stuff, too bad you didn't" - David Thomas
Scoble, maybe you could post audio downloads of interviews with shaky cameras I get headaches watching some videos and just listen to it while reading something else. - Giancarlo Angulo
Giancarlo: it's easy to make video "audio only." Just minimize the browser window. - Robert Scoble
I just listen to the audio. Who wants to look at thoses dudes and Mr. Hawk scampering about? GREAT AUDIO SCOBLE! haha - daniel morgan
love TH in the background taking pictures...great video, thanks for sharing (like you could resist :)) - Justin Korn
I think you should get a cam on your glass then it would not shake :) Spontaneity and non-shaky films in one. - Roland Hesz
Really cool video. The Surface UI just begs to be poked and jabbed and spun and zoomed too much :) I just started a DIY mini-giggapixel camera project using LEGO Mindstorms, Canon G3, Zoomify and a Wacom Tablet. Not quite the same though - Andrew Smith
Andrew: I could play with that Table for hours. Microsoft sure doesn't get credit when it does stuff like this. - Robert Scoble
I agree that doing it in HD would loose the moment, but cellphones should get tripod attachments to stabilize them. - Mário Pires
Scoble: thanks for the video - very interesting. The one thing that struck me was the guys were finding it tough to 're-find' their POI. I realise this is just a tech preview at this stage but did you get any sense they would be using visual markers/bookmarking or other forms of 'cue' to reduce the search time? Also, any clues if they are planning to use image analysis to automagically identify POI? - Craig Balding
Craig: I didn't get a good read about that, sorry. You sorta see exactly what I was seeing on the video. I didn't get anything additional outside of the video. - Robert Scoble
Just want to weigh in for crappy video. Scoble gets me places and shows me things and people, I'd never get to/see/meet otherwise. And that's a big enough deal for me to live with all kinds of downside. And anyway, for me, the on-the-edge immediacy is almost enhanced by the vid quality. Part of the charm...:) - Andre van Rooyen
Good point, Scoble. I think there is a tangible market opportunity here for an instant blogging camera - something, anything is better than cellphone video. I do like the immediateness of the medium though. - Aaron deMello
I hardly noticed the quality of the video as I was interested in the content. Thanks again Robert for a really interesting insight into some cools stuff. - John Cooper
Love the Surface. Thanks for sharing. I did get a little nauseous from the rotating map, scrolling and zooming. Just a little. - Carolyn
This is another area where I think MSFT leads the industry - and you're right, they don't get props for it. - Aaron deMello
I have to agree.. I love the interviews and new info you provide, but I just can't watch the qik videos.. I just can't. - Tim Hoeck
Phenomenal interview and demonstration. Best 'real world' demo of Surface I have seen. Less than stellar video quality is most certainly better than nothing at all--keep up the great work! - JimmyJet
I'm trying to see if that damn blogger widget I am trying to get working on with friendfeed works.... actually this is just a test. ironically what I like about seesmic is that it integrates video as comments on blogs. want so bad! - Noah David Simon
Seesmic is a good tool, but Loic needs to honest with us! - Igor The Troll
I don't know, are you going to get onto Seesmic while naked? ;-) - Duncan Riley
But I may have sex with my lady and film it on Seesmic! Just need to hide some parts! LMAO - Igor The Troll
looks like seesmic video is still in fucking ALPHA!!!!!!! can't even fudge the playclip ahead step by step yet. Can I recommend a link? http://www.adobe.com/devnet/fl... - daniel morgan
What's not clear: were the videos in question ever on the phone, and second, surely if this was an issue, they would have done due diligence before the deal. - Duncan Riley via Bookmarklet
From the news report: "Verizon said the controversial video was never shown on it's vcast service, and was never intended to be made available." - Ken Sheppardson
The video in question was posted A YEAR AGO! Didn't Verizon see this coming? - Pat Hawks
Pat, my question exactly. Ken, I heard that bit, but then what were people protesting about? the context doesn't fit, how can you boycott something that wasn't there? - Duncan Riley
Someone found out about the video, a huge public protest happened, it would become a media circus because someone used a keyword "racism". So Verizon went nuts and said "Ohh we need to make a statement and do something now! Who cares what?" - Candace Holly
Maybe people are just upset Verizon would do business with Feldman? - Pat Hawks
Verizon is full of shit. Loren is not a racist... I'm not going to stand for this PC crap! - Noah David Simon
ok, is it just me or did Channel 4 News spell "activist" wrong? acctivist? just sayin' - Christine Lu
It doesn't matter when the videos were made - much like it doesn't matter when a scandal arises over someone else's past behavior - like Obama's pastor & McCain's association w/ Gov. Williams. The behavior may be in the past - but the "guilt by association" is always in the present. Verizon clearly decided not to get behind Loren in this. Sometimes, your past does come back to haunt you. Even if it's not 'fair'. - Lucretia Pruitt
Lucretia, the thing that doesn't make sense is why Verizon didn't think about this BEFORE making the deal, sense the videos didn't just pop up. - Pat Hawks
Too bad the social media doesn't have the power of the mainstream media yet. Verizon could get a load of us calling "bs" on the whole thing. Though I doubt that will make them panic as much as this story did. ...It's terrible but, I'm laughing. Because this...this is funny. - Candace Holly
I like the Rev Wright angle. That's double groovy with one and half twists. - Jay Tannenbaum
I think video is racist. Verizon and 1938 is a different story but the video is racist. - Akshay Dodeja
Verizon is just a bunch of dolts wearing suits. If they didn't see it before it's because they didn't look for it. In other words: they didn't do their job. When they awoke from their slumber they were being pushed around by a bunch of hysterical PC ankle-biters. - William, CPU Media
Media Circus time-Loren gets to follow the elephants and clean up. - Mark Forman
hahaha this is great. I feel like 'internet people' have a much healthier conception of racism. Taking tech nigga out of context could easily make Loren a racist. But it really started a conversation, which is what I think what Loren originally hoped to do. - daniel morgan
"Hello LA Humanity? This is Dave Winer. Did you know..." Have to say, glad to see feldboy getting nailed. Yep I am. - jeneane is in the house
@daniel morgan . I'm sorry but your comment "internet people" I find degrading to those of us who use the internet. I am afraid I am going to have to begin a public boycott of Friend Feed since they are allowing you to be on Friend Feed spouting such degrading stereotypes of people on the internet. ...I guess the internet is serious business after all. - Candace Holly
It appears things flared up over the weekend. I would just guess that in the wake of the announcement, the public started browsing Loren's back catalog. The video is linked to and/or embedded on a number of sites over the past few days. The earliest references to the boycott by Najee Ali, Project Islamic Hope, that I can find are from yesterday: http://tinyurl.com/5k4bxq and http://tinyurl.com/6s86yh. - Ken Sheppardson
While we're at it -- screw YOU for not having some frickin respect. - Shey
There's a difference between the state quashing free speech and people using free speech to influence the financial dealings of a private actor. Just sayin', 'tain't censorship. Loren owes his success to controversy, but that's a double-edged sword. - Madsimian
Thanks for sharing this, Duncan, since I wouldn't have seen it otherwise, inasmuch as I'm ignoring Los Angeles local TV news, VCAST, and Najee Ali. Not boycotting, ignoring. - Ontario Emperor
“Alright, we're in a debate here. Is live streaming a good idea or is new media really going to way of "get it when you want it" which negates putting archived media on a live streaming server? Opinions!”
I enjoy live streaming...when my connection allows me to watch it...but shedules being what they are these days I don't watch half as much as I would like to..so then I usually resort to watching recordings(if there is one) at a later time. I guess that really isn't an answer so I will say the way of "get it when you want it" is probably the way to go these days. - Bryan Jones
I watch a few Shows Live when i get the chance, its going back to the old media way, but with all the great content of new media. i personally, think that LIVE adds a certain excitement, that you can't get from pre-recorded stuff. it also, gives producers certain freedoms where things dont have to be perfect. - Absalon Isaac Prieto
We do our WorkFastTV show (about how the Internet is changing work) live because then we can have audience participation. Last week we had 70 people watching and participating and it was really great. - Robert Scoble
Our debate centers around two things. First, our media is all music or podcasts, etc. So we'd be compiling it to stream. However, there's a chance some shows might be done live but, the way we work makes that difficult to schedule. I used to do live shows and the participation was awesome. We're more curious if this is a good idea to do..fill a stream with archived media and do live once in awhile or...just stick to the format? - Candace Holly
I like to watch a live stream and participate if possible. Generally I'll go back if it had great contnet. More often than not I'm not available for the live feed and I'll watch it later and read the comments if available. - Janet Fouts
It's a mix. Live will never completely die, because there will always be times we want to kick back and listen/ watch as opposed to seek. As Scoble notes, live streaming also allows for audience participation as well, not huge numbers, but as a content creator that participation can add to the final product. I know in podcasts previously when there has 40 ppl listening in that we've had audience questions, read some of the comments out, that sort of thing. - Duncan Riley
I agree that the audience participation is a great benefit of live streaming, however, living across the world (Thailand) from most of this content usually prevents me from enjoying that benefit. As long as content is available for download (preferably by RSS) then I am all for the live streaming. - Dan Evans
There are times when you will want to stream and then probably also release as a podcast. You are serving 2 different audiences. Additionally, you will want to put one touch media players on yoru site to serve those people who view directly from your site. So the answer is YES. - Douglas E. Welch via twhirl
@Douglas currently on the site we have a player where you can click to play all the podcasts. It's just a regular flash plug in though. If we went live with some things, the live show would be archived into a podcast as well..of course some of the live aspects are cut for a podcast audience. You are right, it's two different audiences you work with when doing that. - Candace Holly
If only I could stream. My DSL is only 1.5 mbps. That's what I get for living in the beauty of nature. When I go to download an HD movie it says "will be ready to view in 12 hours"! (It usually takes 4). My upload doesn't even handle Slingbox! Takes the spontaneity out of it! It would be nice to just cruise and say, "Yeah, I want to watch that now." Maybe when it reaches the boonies... -
