I wore myself out to get there this past weekend, with 500 miles of driving and 14 miles of hiking. Very early Saturday morning I left San Francisco and drove through Yosemite to the eastern side of the Sierras. Near Mammoth Lakes I set out on a trail that goes up to Shadow Lake and briefly joins the John Muir Trail before climbing to Ediza Lake, where I planned to camp that night. Camping is prohibited on much of the shore around Ediza, and as far as I could tell the only way to get to the unrestricted area involved either 1) wading through a fast-moving, rocky creek, or 2) wading through the lake at the point where it outlets into Shadow Creek and then hiking over a field of boulders. Getting a little wet is no big deal, but – considering my heavy backpack and the fact that I’m not blessed with world-class balance – it didn’t take too much effort to picture myself taking a spill...
