Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Why is Video Conferencing So Brutally, Terribly, Embarrassingly, Craptastically Awful? - http://paul.kedrosky.com/archive...
"I use photobooth on the mac or my iPhone to record videos of myself. But on the desktop, I find the videos come out much more natural after i drag another window overtop of the video so I can't see myself. For regular video conferencing, I use skype. it just works." - Danny Robinson

"copied from my comment on Felipe Coimbra's (@twtfelipe) Blog post in response to his tweet: http://twitter.com/twtfeli... http://www.felipecoimbra.com/2009...... You're the perfect example of someone we could only *hope* would want to move to Canada. I understand why you didn't offer up that you intended to start a company to the immigration officer. Starting a company is risky, and they want to make sure you wouldn't be a strain on the social system, ie health care, welfare, unemployment, etc. But really, if you come here, start a company, and employ other locals, I would think that is the best anyone could ever hope for. What if the local investors or VCs could sponsor these entrepreneurs under a Startup Visa? I understand the a) most web companies don't need any investment so why make that a requirement, or b) the fear that the VC would be able to hold the threat of exporting the founders if they didn't perform to their standards. I get that, but think..." - Danny Robinson

But we do need founders to be able to move to..." - Danny Robinson

"Hi Brendon. I always love our debates. The 'problem' is clearly stated in the blog post. Bootup Labs wants to invest in, and move foreign teams to Canada to start companies, and the problem is that I can't (very easily). We pick the best teams that apply, period. This time around, we found that some (not all) of those teams happen to be from outside the country. We'll probably use the NAFTA program for our US teams, but we also have a team from Europe, we'd like to bring in. And, as part of the NAFTA program, they have to fully intend to move back, which is a little backwards, to say the least. That term is in the NAFTA program to avoid giving up local jobs to immigrants. But founders starting their companies in Canada, are actually CREATING jobs for locals that otherwise wouldn't be here. Why would we ever want them to leave??? Lastly, your argument for a more targeted approach to getting expats to move back, seems to compromise our simple requirement of picking the best teams we can..." - Danny Robinson

"Great job David. I hear a common theme from most (not all) development shops that i have talked to. They all struggle to find enough time to do what they really want, which is to work on their own projects. Some do a better job at this than others (Invoke and Nitobi are great examples here in Vancouver) But of the majority, if they didn't have to work on client work, they could be out there building products that they own and turn into real businesses. Unfortunately it's not black or white. Both outside funded teams and "organically" funded teams are able to create great startups. As soon as we removed VC as a dependency to get a company off the ground, all sorts of viable models opened up. It's a great time to be alive." - Danny Robinson

Bootup Labs Blog : Assessing Competition Risk for Digital Media Startups - http://blog.bootuplabs.com/2009...
"You've defined the art of M -- Buy them early enough where they still have enough uncertainty that the price is low, but they've proven their business. Not surprisingly, The BOD's appetite for being acquired is inversely proportional to how well the company is doing (revenue or user growth), which is proportional to the amount of interested acquirers. This forces prices up a very fast rate. I call that the "updraft." As entrepreneurs, we like to get caught in the updraft." - Danny Robinson

"I agree whole-heartily that the presenter needs to be passionate, and practice practice practice, but there is no excuse for anyone (angel or consultant) to comment on the presentation style, or what was not in the slides. The question is "DO YOU LIKE THE BUSINESS?" Even if they did a shitty job presenting it, you will at least understand the industry, and will have some good questions after the pitch (preferably in private). It's not anyone's "job" to give them pitch advice. The investor is there to decide if they're going to invest - and that's all." - Danny Robinson

Bootup Labs Blog : VC is not broken - Anymore. Digital Media's new funding models - http://blog.bootuplabs.com/2009...
"Funny you say that it's an accepted reality. I just received an email from someone about the post (By the fact that responded by email tells they prefer to remain nameless, which I will respect.) This person feels that it's all cyclical and the bubbles are not reality. Steady state is 5-7 years to invest, build and exit a company, and that the model works fine. People are just not happy with the fact they're not getting bubble returns anymore. (I'm paraphrasing here) My take: VC is should be sector specific in the short term, but sector agnostic in the long term. In other words, and what I tried to say in the post, is that traditional VC is broken for Digital Media. So, it's time for VCs to "Jump the Shark", and focus on sectors that work for their model. Clean Tech for example. No one has lived through an environment that we have now: Where it costs so little to get a company up and running, profitably, and have exits for those companies so high at the same time. For us, there is..." - Danny Robinson

VC Adventure : Venture capital is dead! Long live venture capital! - http://www.sethlevine.com/blog...
"Fantastic post. I'm an Entrepreneur turned VC specifically because I believe now is the best time to be investing in new companies. After all, I've got the disease that most entrepreneurs have: the ability to see the opportunity in any situation. I recently attended the CVCA (Canadian Venture Capital Association) yearly shin-dig in Calgary. Tim Draper keynoted. I was surprised to witness the amount of fear and CYA from VCs who are really just worried about their management fees. They claim the issue is that there are no exits and their portfolio companies are unable to raise additional cash. The funny thing is that, so far, In June there has already been 55 acquisitions. (See my tweet about that earlier today http://twitter.com/dannyro...... )" - Danny Robinson

Re: betaworks - Companies with excessive resources rarely deliver... - http://betaworks.com/post...
"What do you think would happen if management had, both, the financial discipline to make good decisions AND google money? At the same time! Money itself can't make decisions (good or bad), people do. If you have the cash and you're withholding it, it's your way of controlling the founders, because you don't really trust them to spend the money wisely. The question really is: should you be investing in people you don't trust? And moreover, if you do trust them, then shouldn't you invest as much money as you can, so the founder can capture more of the market they're going after before competitors do?" - Danny Robinson

I'm going to give away $4,500 at #sxsw on http://www.ustream.tv/studio (on live now). My own personal money from Cisco deal. Details tomorrow.
Ewwwwww the big announcement!!!!!!!!!! - sofarsoShawn
hum... a contest, Robert? - directeur
I like money! That would be a good drinking budget for the next 4 days. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Cisco paid me to do some interviews for its launch on Monday. I liked what they are doing so much I am giving away the money at SXSW. - Robert Scoble
Wow! that's very interesting! but you'll generously give it to SXSW's attendees or to someone who wins a contest or something? - directeur
Directeur: contest. I am still thinking of a way to give away the money. I am thinking most of those who don't have jobs. - Robert Scoble
Robert, you got my respect, Sir! :) - directeur
I'm getting married next month and I am unemployed so let me know what we need to do haha. - Nation Hahn
Couldn't agree more @directeur. Bravo Robert! - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Quit trying to ass kiss for the money shot which finally earned your respect - sofarsoShawn
I don't need Scoble's $$$ sfss, but I'm sure he'll come up with a creative way to make sure it goes to someone that does! - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Sofarsoshawn: this is separate from my employment announcement which is happening tomorrow at SXSW on Gillmor Gang. - Robert Scoble
I will be on http://www.ustream.tv/studio right before Gillmor Gang tomorrow. At 4 pm Austin time. Gillmor Gang is at 5 pm. - Robert Scoble
OMG even more excitement! - sofarsoShawn
sofarsoshawn: Look, I don't have a paypal account, I won't participate in Robert's contest... I run my own business and it's doing very fine so far, I make lots of things for fun, only for fun. I'm a happy guy, so when I say that I respect Robert (with whom I don't share every opinion, and he knows it), I really do! :) - directeur
Robert Scoble Stimulus? cool! - Rex
$4,500 bucks.... wow. I suggest buying nine Apple or American Express gift cards and give them randomly to whoever donates $25 to a cause. :-) - Jason Calacanis
Robert and Jason, would you donate to us?: FHL International, Inc. http://www.goodsearch.com/... We need a number of items but we can always use donations to our Mobile Food Pantry. Especially baby food with a good date on it. Both jars and cereal. Surprisingly, its the last thing people think of. Thanks!! Also any used but still good working desktops for our office. http://fhlinternational.org - Melanie Reed
Just interesting that dropping money suddenly prompted effusive respect, and speaks to one's character or lack of one. He said outright he didn't need it & as such is not a sacrifice & is like throwing out the trash. Scoble's done much more to deserve respect in his actions & deeds, then give away something he doesn't care about, yet this is what was focused on. And I know a paypal account is soooo difficult to set up so if you need help I'll walk you through it. - sofarsoShawn
Even better, I am going to do the contest all in friendfeed. - Robert Scoble
Is this like "Win Ben Stein's Money," but with "Robert" instead of "Ben" and "Scoble" instead of "Stein"? - Mistletoe Glen
Hey Robert, try Strutta.com if you want to build your own UGC contest. - Danny Robinson
Glen: could be! :-) - Robert Scoble
sofarsoshawn: I think that you didn't understood, but that's not a big problem. Let me explain: Robert had my respect a very long time ago for so many positions and opinions he had. The money per se is not the reason this time, it's the fact that he'll be giving it via a CONTEST. i.e. The fact that he'll contribute to ignite some creativity and share the money (not throwing it from his window) with people who deserve it! People in serious need are the most creative, aren't they? - directeur
Oh, and thanks sofarsoshawn for your help about paypal, but I've been coding eShops integrating paypal since many years ago :) - directeur

Re: Venture Capital for the Long Tail - http://www.unstructuredventures.com/uv...
"Personally, I agree that these are the conditions today, specifically in the area of digitally distributed tech sector. Bio-tech, Clean-tech, etc will still need the VC bucks to get off the ground. The Internet is such a large place though, that many so called lifestyle companies are only lifestyle by choice. And who am I to judge. If that's what you want to do, then great. There a lot to be said for not answering to anyone, and sitting at home in your underwear selling ceramic unicorns. But most of these companies are capable of using their traction as a starting off point to build a very valuable enterprise. That's when taking a bit of investment can help. Doesn't have to VC, but growing your company at any rate faster than organic usually requires capital from somewhere." - Danny Robinson
