PSFK was in attendance at this month’s LUCID NYC, held on the lower level of the Bowery Electric. Though the event’s organizers playfully waffled about how to describe what the evening would entail, LUCID NYC is more or less a “platform for people doing interesting things to share with interesting people.” As their website explains, this monthly program is “like buying banality offsets.” November’s collection of presenters was an eclectic one, including Jordan Seiler, Heather Gold, and Dan Paluska (with a performance by “the Genie“). Here is recap from the night...

Ever wondered why our country's laws so often favor the rich over middle and working-class people? Consider this: Last week, the Center for Responsive Politics released its latest survey of congressional financial disclosure forms. Of the 535 voting members of Congress, over 44 percent of—237 to be exact—are millionaires. Fifty members have net worths of at least $10 million, and seven are worth more than $100 million. (I profiled Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican who is now the richest member of Congress, in the September/October issue of Mother Jones.) By comparison, around one percent of Americans are millionaires. There is no other minority group that is as overrepresented in Congress as millionaires are. For black people to be similarly overrepresented compared to their percentage of the population, the entire Congress would have to be black.

When curator Laura Arena approached MIT’s Luis Blackaller & Andy Cavatorta, her brief was simple: create something that initiates interaction between the inhabitants of the neighborhood. From the Portuguese fisherman to the Projects, to the artists and hipsters, to a new influx of people, Lucky Gallery sits at the crux of several different communities, none of whom talk, but acknowledge each other as familiar strangers. Luis and Andy’s response was to build a miniature version of Red Hook and populate it with photographic doll versions of people they met and talked to on the street. We join Luis and Andy as they prepare for the opening and watch as the element of play in a virtual world impacts communication in the real one.

The EyeWriter is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus and custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis to draw using only their eyes. The project is an ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people who are suffering from ALS with creative technologies. Members of the Graffiti Research Lab, Free Art and Technology (FAT), Openframeworks and The Ebeling Group communities teamed-up with a legendary LA graffiti writer, publisher and activist, named Tony Quan, aka TEMPTONE. Tony was diagnosed with ALS in 2003, a disease which has left him almost completely physically paralyzed… except for his eyes.
