I have been asking myself this question for four (lonely) years.
- Lo
Lo, same but just for 32 (nearly 33). ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Couchsurfing (www.couchsurfing.org) is a great way to meet new people. You don't even have to let them stay at your place, just attend some of the events, offer to meet people for a coffee and show them round your area.
- Dan Smith
Kol, that's discouraging! I guess I should stop worrying about it now and save some effort :)
- Lo
"As QWERTY-equipped Nokias go we're having a hard time taking our eyes off the N900 (and the E72, come to think of it) -- but it might be worth keeping the N97 hanging around on the back burner, because Nokia certainly hasn't moved on yet. In fact, the company is crafting a rather hefty new update that'll be available next month, and on video, it seems to directly address a few areas that should immediately make the phone more usable, chiefly kinetic scrolling which makes lists behave in a way that's more natural and obvious for a full-touch device. There's also a smattering of bug fixes and performance improvements, more stock widgets available, alternate keyboard characters are now available via long press, and amazingly, they've managed to do all of this while still leaving more phone memory available."

Lucio, no thanks I don't speak American. ;-) Dan, I don't suppose you can send me an invite? :-)

I'm Italian, it don't work on Ita lang, but using EngUS ;)

OK, I'll wait for a English (UK) version. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
That works for me through a US proxy server. Logged in ok but I can't see that it's any different to the regular page. What's all the fuss about?
- Gilbert Harding
Works in France when setting to English US as language
- Jeremy
works (in uk + EnglishUS) but seems to show less stuff (eg highlights)
- immaterial
Hmm sussed. Although I'm seeing the Lite login page I'm not seeing the Lite pages once logged in. Still can't connect to Facebook without going through a US proxy though. Totally borked, at least in my part of the UK.
- Gilbert Harding
Kol, doesn't seem like I can send an invite, but it does work fine for me from here at work in the UK. Do you even get the Facebook Lite login page Kol? Your account settings language etc. shouldn't matter.
- Dan Smith
from IM
Nope, goes straight to the normal FB home page.
- Kol Tregaskes
On the other hand, if you are redirected after logging in, they obviously do
- Dan Smith
from IM
Sounds like it might be location specific. Maybe your IP address is not in a permitted range
- Dan Smith
from IM
OK changed language to English US, logged in through a US proxy server and now seeing the Lite pages. Nice but sadly not up to date. There are some recent entries by "friends" missing. Perhaps they floundered on the way over the ocean.
- Gilbert Harding
I arrive at the Dutch version of lite, but I can only use the lite version in English US.
- Willem (@wim66) ☠
Huh, now back on 'English' soil and Facebook's lights are still out.

"Google Chrome 4 has been released in the buildbot directory and is available for download for Windows, Linux and Max OS. After installing Google Chrome 4.0 from Buildbot’s snapshots, I checked Chromium’s about screen. Build 23181 is tagged as 4.0.202.0. No significant changes have been noticed except the ‘Get Themes’ Option, which is now available under Options -> Personal Stuff. Google Chrome is considered as one of the fastest browser and is gaining the market share quickly. Technical Program Manager Anthony Laforge says- “We’ve officially bumped Chromium to 4.0.x to reflect our code freeze point for 3.0. There is still a bit of work that needs to be done for 3.0 in terms of stability and fixes, and to that end we will be pulling changes into the 195 branch (what will become the stable release). Keep your eyes out for future updates on the beta channel.”"

Yeah, it seems speedy. I guess they will officially push it to the dev channel soon.

Dev channel for Mac Chrome (proper, not chromium) is 3.0.198.1 - And also, how does one get the dev channel changer to work in the Win7RC. Mine always says "NO UPDATE CHANNEL - you are not using GoogleUpdate etc etc) Off to look into the buildbot.

No script support that I can see, pass. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Ahsan, Mona was saying that youtube vids were working for her in Chrome/Mac. I don't know how she did it though.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
OMFG. I just installed this from the buildbot on the mac. It SMOKES. HUGE improvement over Chrome 3.0.198.1. I'm as impressed with the improvement over Chrome3 as I was with the first chrome install on my windows machine (comparing to Firefox3)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
has anyone tried anything higher than this one 4.0.202.0 (23181)?
- metalerik
I'm trying out 23573, working nicely and very fast!
- Ivan Zuzak
ok, i'll try 23577 from 14:30 today. Ivan, do you see any differences?
- metalerik
differences? it seems a lot faster than the old dev build of Chrome. no quirks or instabilities so far.
- Ivan Zuzak
Rob - did you figure out how to make Chromium autoupdate?
- Ivan Zuzak
Bookmark sync, Get Themes button and import from Google Toolbar is all I see.
- Hugh Isaacs II
The bookmark sync thing is not working for me on Chromium (works on Chrome). Anyone managed to get it working on Chromium?
- Ivan Zuzak
I've got the option (PC version), just added "-enable-sync" to the shortcut. But I'm not using Chromium unless someone knows how to turn on scripts and extensions or knows where they sit on our local computers?
- Kol Tregaskes
if you copy-pasted it from a blog Ahsan, you need to remove the space between the two hyphens. I did that and it works for me now -->- http://bit.ly/7Erc7
- vijay
I'm running regular chrome (4.0.201.1) so it's probably an issue with the particular build you're running. Next build will set things right.
- vijay
What is the difference between Google Chrome and Chromium ? I just installed this Chromium 23181 and it didn't erase the Chrome 3 that I had installed. Now I can run both : the "About" screens are differents (one says Chromium, the other says Google Chrome), but both versions are now 4.0.202.0. I don't understand shit captain.
- fwed
Chromium 4 will not auto update AFAIK. I'm running the 4.0.202.0 (202.0) build on the Mac. I haven't looked for a new one yet.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Fwed: Not sure why the two names, but the main difference I've seen so far is javascript speed. Chromium4 is smoking fast. This build is a little crashy on my Mac. Not sure what's causing it, but I'm getting a fair amount of "aw snap" errors. I'm running PeopleBrowsr in it (which is all js) and it runs fine. If I view mostly plain html pages it seems to crash on me.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
i think 3 must be stable for themes and addons now. this can increase the user count. and sony deal is also here

"It's Ofcom's job to keep those cheeky mobile networks in line, and it's released maps of the nation's 3G coverage to show how they're living up to their 3G commitments. You couldn't use it to find out if you're house is covered -- unless you live in the Highlands, where you're pretty much screwed from every direction -- but it's interesting to see how the different networks stack up. Keep in mind that this only shows 3G coverage, so you could still make 2G voice and data calls from inside the blank spots. And it doesn't show the quality of the coverage, and you might get better data speeds from different networks in the same area. Also, there are some simplifications -- Ofcom assumed that all trees and buildings are 10m tall, for example, and that you're calling from outdoors. Ofcom says it's now going to work on getting coverage to the places that aren't getting any 3G love, such as rural areas. If you want to drill down to your postcode, check out the coverage maps on the networks' own Web sites: Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2, and 3."

"I'm going on holiday this week, and to avoid building up a huge amount of email in inbox for when I get back, i've been looking into the costs of using my iPhone abroad, so I can keep check on it while i'm out of the country. Here's how the 5 UK operators in stack up in terms of how much it will cost you to download 1MB of data to your phone, when roaming in a Western European country. 3 Mobile = £1.25 T-Mobile = £1.50 O2 = £2.94 Orange = £2.94 Vodafone = £4.99 As you can see, 3 and T-Mobile are clearly the cheapest out of the five, and this is because they have reduced their prices in accordance with a new EU regulation that caps the wholesale price (the price your mobile provider pays the foreign provider) of mobile data at €1. The idea is that the operators pass the reduction in price onto consumers. 3 and T-Mobile have clearly done this, whereas the other operators clearly have kept that saving for themselves."

Did you know that if you loose your phone, you can actually lock it remotely ? You don’t need to install any special software to do this. You can setup your handset to lock itself up by sending an SMS to the phone from anywhere. This will help protect the data on your handset from prying eyes.

Has anyone managed to get Windows Live Messenger working on the Nokia N97 (Three network). Three give you free use of Messenger included in your data allowance but it seems you need to install their own version of the software. Every time I tried to download and install it through Planet 3, it results in an error message re: JAD/JAR mismatch.
It seems that it's a common problem with the N97 on Three. Three support couldn't help so I ended up installing Nimbuzz instead. It might not have inclusive data like Messenger but instant messaging doesn't exactly use lots of data anyway! Nimbuzz works really well.

"Just take these precautions - Features that use Bluetooth technology, or allowing such features to run in the background while using other features, increase the demand on battery power. Turn Bluetooth technology off when you do not need it. Features that use Wireless LAN (WLAN), or allowing such features to run in the background while using other features, increase the demand on battery power. WLAN on your Nokia device switches off when you are not trying to connect, not connected to an access point, or not scanning for available networks. To further reduce battery consumption, you can specify that your device does not scan, or scans less often, for available networks in the background. If you have set Packet data connection to When available in connection settings, and there is no packet data coverage (GPRS), the device periodically tries to establish a packet data connection. To prolong the operating time of your device, select Packet data connection > When needed. The Maps...

Hlorri from HowardForums has am amazing and very in depth post about mobile email applications I’ve ever read, I thought I would share some of it here with you here after getting his permission. I prefer emoze but I’m bias because they are a client of mine. I will try to keep Hlorris’ order and consistency that he has in his forum post. Keep in mind he focused on readers for a standard IMAP/SMTP setup, as opposed to branded services (GMail, Yahoo, etc) or corporate and proprietary offerings (like Outlook, Lotus Domino, etc). That said, several of these clients support these setups as well. Let’s jump in without any more rambling from me.

"Ever tried to susbcribe to a website but couldn’t because it didn’t offer any RSS feeds? Next time you come across such a website try using Feedity. This handy web app lets you create a fully-functional RSS feed for almost any webpage. Simply copy and paste the web page URL into provided field and click on ‘Preview’ button. In the next step you will be able to preview and if necessary refine the generated feed further. Once you’re satisfied with the results, proceed to ‘Get feed’ to add the new feed to your feedreader. I have tested Feedity by trying to generate an RSS feed for www.drudgereport.com. It worked!"

What features would you change/remove/add to make it like FriendFeed or generally improve it? Of course we'd like the community spirit and the users from FF on FB but technically what needs amending to FB for you?
- Kol Tregaskes
The main thing, of course, is the openness of the community here and being able to see and comment on just about anything. That's something I can't really see Facebook implementing, unless they did a total overhaul of their system and philosophy.
- Grey Drane
Oh, and they'd have to do something about all those damned apps. The vast majority of FB apps just annoy the crap out of me.
- Grey Drane
There has to be a messenger of facebook somewhere in side.
- Naimi
Aside from technical improvements to catch it up with FriendFeed, I'd add the ability to have pseudonymous accounts, just like Google, Twitter, FriendFeed, and most every other major website and social network allow. Let people keep the online identities they've been using for years
- Tinfoil 2.0
@Logical Extremes - Don't we sort-of have that now, thanks to the vanity URLs thing on Facebook? It's also possible to change the URL once, after setting it.
- Tyson Key
As I said here http://friendfeed.com/nathanc... it's mainly just pushing the likes and comments to the top of all of your friends' feeds - that's the core reason FriendFeed works as a conversation instigator.
- Nathan Chase

The privacy policy, the member base, and an option to get a mature theme (no pokes, etc.)

I'm looking forward to the release of the beta privacy functions they are testing. It will make a big difference to be able to control what everyone gets to see. I'm hoping they incorporate friendfeed functionality in such a way that you can share things with a bookmarklet amongst other users in a controllable manner. It'd be good if you could share tech stuff with just your techy...

You should be able to follow anybody without them having to accept a "friend request". And there should be an equivalent to FriendFeed's imaginary friends (e.g. put any RSS feed you like into your stream)
- Pablo Melchor
*confused* facebook doesn't do what i (mainly)use friendfeed for ... so i wouldn't use it for that (it has almost none of the functionality)
- immaterial
++ Pablo - I'd also include groups, the way FF has them implemented /and/ content hiding/blocking in the same way FF has it implemented. If I could block activity from ALL applications, announcements, memes, etc., I would find FB so much more useful and interesting.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Opt-out of all apps and invitations ONCE!
- Wes Hoogenboom
@Tyson... No, vanity url aside, I can't be "Logical Extremes" on Facebook. Well, I could try, but why invest anything in that when they would delete my account once they got a whiff of it.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Aah, OK. Thanks for the clarification.
- Tyson Key
I agree Michael. Open it up! Allow feeds from other social networks. I feel like I'm in a closed box when I use FB. Allow users the ability to discover and follow without having to wait for a friend request. Users who don't want to be found should just change privacy settings. I'd also give users the ability to opt out of apps. I hate being forced into dealing with them. The amount invitations and requests are I receive are redonkulous, I'd like to be able to opt out of them as well.
- Brodie Beta
I'd remove all of the dorks, and replace them with all of the friends i've made on friendfeed.
- Iain Baker
I was just thinking that Iain. I should ask my FF buds to post their FB urls =)
- Brodie Beta
Kol has posted a thread for you to do just that Brodie.....hang on.....

It's name would be "FriendFeed", it'd take the form of the service that we currently face, and we'd dance a happy dance, or something like that...

I have read many comments from people saying that they do not want to mingle their Facebook "real-life friends" (who may not share at all their "geeky interests") and their FriendFeed friends (whom they may not have met in person but who do share their interests). I've been using FB over FF the last couple days simply because of a possible merger.
