The wife is soon to be in need of a new bag / purse and she has no love for the overstuffed and oversized bags that are so popular now. Looking for ideas for her. No snazzy colors...black is great and it has to be considered an accessory, not something you carry everything but the kitchen sink in.
- JA Castillo
I'm not a purse person, or I could help more. I buy bags from REI and other outdoor shops.
- Dawn M. Armfield
Target always has cute affordable stuff in a wide range of colors and designs.
- Ginger Makela Riker
@Ginger - we shop TARGET like it is no one's business, but the bags there are fugly (as of late). That is what pretty much precipitated this post.
- JA Castillo
I've gotten some very cute stuff from Macy's. I'm really really picky when it comes to shopping for purses. I don't buy knock-offs and I tend to buy things that I know will last me a while, even if it means paying a bit more. Macy's is a nice in-between sort of place, has good sales, if you're willing to put a little energy into searching through the sales racks. And this means that I...

Would anyone have any recommendations for some items that can be found on Etsy?
- JA Castillo
@PeaFierce Those purses were really cute! esp. the black and white ones
- *Tiffany Diamond*
I've seen a lot of cute ones, but more around $40, in Chinatown, the Marina and some boutiques in North Beach, downtown. Not sure where you are, tho.
- anna sauce
...wow, Pea...some of those are great! :) Will show the wife later tonight.
- JA Castillo
@anna - thanks; we live in Florida. :)
- JA Castillo
I'm looking for a purse too. Target seems to be full of the amorphous sacks I hate, Kohl's too. (I need pockets!) Thanks for reminding me about Etsy Pea, I'll be distracted for hours! ^_^
- Heather
@costillo that's too bad about the fugliness at Target right now. I've found a couple bags I've liked, but I must've gotten lucky.
- Ginger Makela Riker
@Ginger - yeah, not sure what the deal is with the huge bags and the fugliness, but that's all we can find @ TARGET right now. Maybe it's a Florida market thing. :/
- JA Castillo
@Pea - those purses @ Etsy were a hit with the wife. Three were really nice and I faved them so I can come back to them when the wife is ready to level-up! :)
- JA Castillo
The local Samsonite and Nine West outlets here had some for >$50. Otherwise, I'd say Macy'...or the ones Pea suggested on Etsy.

I have to wonder how much longer Zooomr is going to be around. I suspect it will survive as long as the rest of Kristopher's projects live since they all use the same core technology. Thomas Hawk hasn't really used the service other than uploading in almost a year and Kristopher has slowed down his participation as well. Anyone know anything?
"I'm so glad I came here today and read this. While I'm not a musician, I understand this. I left a good job to pursue my doctorate. My family asked why -- why would you leave, why would you give up something good? I didn't give up something good. I gave up something adequate to get something amazing. My love is in language. I love how words work, how people use them, and what they mean beyond what is written. I think, in so many ways, when something is designated as "art," the value of it is forgotten. I work in a field that is considered "language arts" or the humanities. It's really about people, about who and what we are, about how we express ourselves, and open ourselves to new experiences. I try to express this to others, to share my passion. I see eyes glaze over, and that's ok. They don't have to understand, but I can still share the beauty and wonder of it all with them. The photograph is one of the most joyous, loving ones I've seen in a long time. It makes my heart sing...."

Gotta love Creative Commons. I was contacted a few months back about a photograph of mine that was licensed under CC. An artist asked me to use the photograph for a circus themed paint series for a charity fund raiser event. Even though I license under CC non-commercial, I had no problem with this, given that it was going to charity.
I grant permission to quite a few people -- but they never send me the results even though I ask for them. I would just like a .jpg. That's all.

NPR or BBC? Which one holds the crown for most unbiased, fair and accurate reporting of events around the world? You can offer other alternatives if you like, just be prepared for the heckling you are sure to get if you say Fox News.
Anyhow who even attempts to make a case for Fox News will be roundly dismissed and laughed at. And I'm sure that we'll make threads lambasting you...could be fun actually.
- Alex Scoble
It's not really a fair comparison. NPR isn't a global news service like the BBC.
- Kevin Pedraja
That's odd, Kevin, because they report on events all throughout the world.
- Alex Scoble
I wonder how people outside of the western world would react to this statement. From certain world perspectives, BBC, NPR, CNN, and Fox are pretty much the same.
- John E. Bredehoft
Never heard of NPR but I was always going to say the BBC! :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
The BBC. They have the resources worldwide to cover more events on the spot. Plus there is now the BBC Trust monitoring them, and one of their roles is to ensure that the BBC remains impartial. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/)
- Andy Bold
BBC, hands down. NPS struggles to not have a bias but it just can't manage it.
- Soup
Ohnoes, so it's not Faux News? Damn them and their false advertizing!
- Rene Wirtz
But yeah, I would go for Auntie Beeb :-)
- Rene Wirtz
Fox News. Oh wait, not 4/1 today. Okay, hard for me to say, but I like that BBC provides a more international perspective. Refreshing. That being said, I listen to NPR about an hour a day.
- Mike Reynolds
Alex, they report on events around the world, but they have a relatively small number of full-time reporters stationed outside the U.S. and they don't broadcast into foreign markets. They also often source stories through other news services and magazines (including BBC, The Economist, etc.). By contrast, the Beeb has hundreds around the world and broadcasts all over..
- Kevin Pedraja
At least in the last 2 decades I've really payed attention to news, I'd always fall on the side of the Beeb. I think some of the work they do is fantastic.
- Bob M. Montgomery
from twhirl
I love both! But I'm generally only exposed to the BBC via KQED; I'm sure I'm missing a lot.
- Adam Lasnik
BBC and NPR are as biased as any other source. No such thing as impartial. Everyone has biases and they reflect in the editorial board if not in the journalists themselves. Fox News merely reported what others refused to report, which is why they captured such a large market share from day one. I think they've changed recently, I guess because of peer pressure from other networks. I don't care if you make fun of my preferences. I have my own opinions, based upon research and fact-finding. Deal w/it. :-)
- Molly
I'd call them both intelligent rather than unbiased.
- Robin Barooah
+10 to what john said. i think the BBC is more middle of the road than NPR in terms of political coverage within their respective countries. but some of the BBC's documentaries have a 19th century 'look at the natives' feel. granted, i could be viewing this through my own anti-colonialist, fuck-The-Man perspective, but i can't say that the BBC is unbiased in that regard.
- tiffany
I don't know NPR - but out of the bunch off news services that I use i trust the BBC the most...
- Kevin Nordmand
Since you said ‘crown’, I'll pick BBC. ;-p
- Anthony Citrano

Dawn, I like a nice CF as much as the next person, but I find using cheaper CF cards works just as well. Unless you have a camera with a fast FPS rate, you don't need a fast card. An inexpensive card will usually last okay, especially if you format it after downloading the photos to your computer.

@Erica Yes, I know. I should have continued with the thought that it is curious to me that most of the responses are from males in favor of donating. I wonder if the difference in donating makes it a much more difficult question for females to answer.
- Anne Bouey
@Anne Yeah I know what you mean. I would go through the craziness of female donation for a true friend though as anyone I call a friend would do the same for me.
- EricaJoy
@Erica That's very noble, but I hope that neither you nor any of your friends ever require such a donation.

Escape from the Eighties! You can take your leave of the 1980s with five songs. Don't be a musicologist: what are the five songs *you* would want to take away. You're condemned to Members Only jackets and parachute pants until you can grab your five and hit the time door. Which are they?
U2 - Pride (In the Name of Love), Journey - Faithfully, Tears for Fears - Head over Heels, Berlin - Sex, Spandau Ballet - True. What can I say, I was a power-ballad, angst ridden, confused teenaged girl. That's my story anyway. :-)
- Dawn M. Armfield
Hmmm...but then I start thinking about Prefab Sprout, the Talking Heads, ABC, Adam Ant, New Order, The Smiths...aaaagggh! Now I have a million 80s songs in my head, damn you! ;-)
- Dawn M. Armfield
5 from the 80s? Jeez, I could run up 100, certainly 10 from each year. Let's see, the quintessential 80s for me: Rio - Duran Duran, Don't You Want Me - Human League, I Ran - Flock of Seagulls, Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes, Tainted Love - Soft Cell. (Seriously, I could think of 100s more that might rival or replace these.)
- AJ Kohn
Clash "Guns of Brixton" (technically, December 14, 1979), U2 "Sunday Bloody Sunday," Laurie Anderson "O Superman," Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime," Public Enemy "Don't Believe the Hype."
- Chris Baskind

This is hard to pick only 5: B-52s "Rock Lobster," J Geils Band "Love Stinks," REO Speedwagon's "Take it on the Run," Joan Jett (the entire album), The Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like." Oh and I have to add a bonus of Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina."
- Trish R
Pixies - "Here Comes Your Man"; Michael Penn - "No Myth"; The Smiths - "I Know It's Over"; Sugarcubes - "Coldsweat"; X - "4th Of July". Man that X one is a tough choice...there are so many of their songs tied to great memories for me.
- Jeremy Brooks
I think the Eighties were an amazingly productive musical era.
- Chris Baskind
Just Like Heaven (Cure), How Soon Is Now (Smiths), Cities in Dust (Siouxie), Throughout the Dark Months of April and May (Cocteau Twins). Can't decide between the early Pixies (typical of their work, it's interchangably brilliant). I'd settle for Gigantic for sentimental reasons. Mmm... High School. Didn't like it much. :)
- Madsimian
The Cure - 10:15 Saturday Night, Ministry - We Believe, U2 - New Year's Day, Pixies - Break My Body, Grateful Dead - Till the Morning Comes. Best thread ever!
- Jason Wehmhoener
I have to agree, Chris. There isn't a group listed here (and so many more) that didn't produce at least one song that I enjoyed.
- Dawn M. Armfield
Can't argue with Sunday Bloody Sunday, Once in a Lifetime, Funky Cold Media, No Myth, How Soon Is Now, The Cure ... I'd go with something from Boys Don't Cry. I missed a critical one: Anything from the Violent Femmes self titled album. Also, something from Hall & Oates. Something from Squeeze. Bitchin' Camaro from The Dead Milkmen. I do believe the 80s had some amazing music!
- AJ Kohn
Crap, something from REM's Document. Something from Midnight Oil. Something from pre-Kick INXS.
- AJ Kohn
The Clash - London Calling; U2 - Pride (In The Name of Love); Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax; Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes; Journey - Don't Stop Believin'. Wow, harder to cut it to 5 picks here than your earlier film list query, fun memories though, thanks!
- Casey
Only five? that hurts...okay: The Message by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Only You by YAZ, In My Eyes by Minor Threat, When Doves Cry by Prince, and Just Can't Get Enough by D'Mode. In another two minutes this list could soooo change...darn you with your 5 jive!
- Anna Haro
I think Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" was the song of the decade, but it doesn't make my personal list. There's so much to choose from: the fallout of New Wave and Punk; stadium rock; the beginnings of rap (thanks, Sugarhill Records!); some fantastic progressive stuff; the start of modern Country music ("Urban Cowboy" soundtrack and its spawn) ... amazing.
- Chris Baskind
i have tow more choices to make - one will be the pixies, duh. I don't know. maybe both will be the pixies. but then i am leaving out talking heads...

I am very ashamed that I did not mention Prince. I need to hide this thread, it's distracting me and causing all these songs to stick in my brain.
- Trish R
yeah, this is like asking "which of your children do you want to live?" that said, these are not THE. - Lucretia Pruitt
a) AWESOME question 1) Drop Dead Legs - Van Halen, 2) Cars - Gary Numan 3) Falco - Rock Me Amadeus 4) Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night 5) Eurythmics - Here Comes the Rain - ok limiting to 5 was much harder than expected, this isn't the right list. oh, yes...Yaz, Violent Femmes, Depeche Mode, Prince...argh! I'm drawn back to this like plastic bangle bracelets were drawn to Madonna in the early days...

Holy crap, what a great question. I can't outdo what other people have posted (Prince, Violent Femmes, Bowie, Pixies, Soft Cell, Public Enemy). I'd add: Cyndi Lauper, Money Changes Everything (seriously, it's an amazing song); Depeche Mode, Never Let Me Down Again; Grace Jones, Slave to the Rhythm; Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew, La-Di-Da-Di; Eddie Grant, Electric Avenue.

Thomas, beware - this show is going to make you want to smoke cigarettes and drink cocktails at work.
- Mike Doeff
I cannot wait until July 27 when this starts again.
- Francine Hardaway
Thought you would like to know that I have created a room for Mad Men. Please drop by and leave comment/chat.

Is this show worth watching? I mised it.

I love this show. Been watching it for the past few weeks! The sets, costuming, language, everything seems so authentic!

Mad Men ISN'T on COMCAST On-Demand! I Demand my On-Demand Mad Men! I'm a man - who's mad about not getting Mad Men. On-Demand. When I want it.

I remember - I was 7. I remember an awesome series Kaptain Kangaroo did about the founding fathers and the constitution, etc. I remember patriotic displays at the grocery store and I remember how the city of Vicksburg painted all the fire hydrants to look like revolutionary war soldiers. Up until then it was relatively rare for the 4th to be a big deal in Vicksburg since the city surrendered on the 4th of July back during the Civil War...
- Chrimmus Tad
I spent the Bicentennial in Pascagoula. But I wasn't seven. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
I was 14. I had a Johnny Horizon sticker on my bedroom door - "Let's clean up America for our 200th birthday." My friend (the one I visited in Knoxville in June) provided some illustrations for our junior high yearbook.

Also, that may have been the year that I played flute in a "fife" & drum unit in a neighborhood parade.

The signing was right here in PA. For that matter, so was the first capitol. Tad, your right, I was there
- Charlie Anzman
i was 4 1/2 and i was given a t-shirt with a cake and candles on it that said "Happy Birthday, America" and it was my favorite shirt for as long as i could fit into it.

I was 5 1/2. Remember the Bicentennial quarters?

I remember. I was 6. We had this big program at school and had to wear blue shirts with a red bandana and sing America the Beautiful. A boy peed on the floor in the front row and our teacher had a meltdown because we all started laughing in the middle of the song.
- Trish R
I was 6.. I remember hanging out with my best friend Keith and throwing pine cones at girls during recess.
- Phil G
I was 22, in the Army, in D.C. I remember going to see the Queen during her visit.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
I was 6. If memory serves (although I do experience memory leaks these days) I seem to recall tall-mast ships on the water in NYC. We lived near there back then.
- Kevin C. Tofel
I was 6 and I remember my dad taking the family to the railroad station in town to see the Bicentenial Train. That reminds me, we have pictures somewhere...

26. We watched the NYC fireworks on TV in Modesto, CA -

I was seven, and was supporting Howard the Duck for president. I was forced to be in a bicentennial pageant, but for the life of me, I can't remember how it went.
- Roger Benningfield
I was 17... That's the year I learned the truth. That love was meant for beauty queens.
- Kevin Shannon
Age 10. Loved the bicentennial coins (as a coin collector) and the $2 bill (1st one since 1963). My sister was born that year (11/12/76). Same day as me, 10 years later. It was the 110th anniversary of Sun Yat-Sen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki..., the guy who brought democracy to China.
- Mitchell Tsai
15 for me. One thing I remember is seeing the "76" roadsigns around Richmond, Va. that marked the Bicentennial Bike Trail that runs coast to coast. I became fascinated with the idea of that ride as well as other long-distance trails like the Appalachian and Pacific Crest trails. Someday.

Well now, I wasn't expecting a nipple - that's for sure. I'll say black and white - makes her appear as a sculpture.
- Vince DeGeorge
Yeah, the B&W brings that out too :)
- J. McConnell
I tend to like B&W, however for this shot, I think the color is lovely. Her lips and her areola/nipple are just pinky enough to make it pop.
- Dawn M. Armfield
i will do it if you can fly me over from nyc
- Allen Stern
I was in Mountain View today! Does it have to be tonight? Can you do next week? I will be back in town.
- Daniel Brusilovsky
Damn, how about tomorrow? Want to come over for a Half Moon Bay BBQ? :-)
- Robert Scoble
ooh, ooh, pick me! pick me! .... wait.... that'd be a long walk. nm :)
- Chris Abbey
Do we get to keep the hardware device? :P
- David Recordon
@Robert Scoble: We're thinking about heading your way tomorrow, actually. Our 4th of July plans are up the air, but it's a possibility. You have a BBQ planned? What time?
- Don MacAskill
Don: call me when you're coming over tomorrow. The BBQ is gonna be going in the evening. +1-425-205-1921
- Robert Scoble
I'll see if we can make it. If we can't this weekend, we should do it again sometime soon. :)
- Don MacAskill
Why is it I feel like I miss out on stuff when I live up here in S. MN?
- Mike Wills
@Mike Wills - or Jacksonville, Florida...
- JA Castillo
