Heroku starts charging for app-deployment service » VentureBeat
"Lindenbaum says the platform that’s closest to Heroku’s is probably the Google App Engine, but there are two key differences. For one thing, rather than supporting a swath of languages, Heroku is focused on delivering the best experience for Ruby on Rails, a framework that’s known for fast development. (App Engine currently supports Python and Java, with plans to add more languages.) Also, Heroku is open, meaning that it’s easy to move apps and data in and out of its platform, while App Engine includes a number of proprietary technologies that make that more difficult." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
These differentiators don't sound promising. Better import/ export utilities are on the GAE roadmap. There is also some overlap here with EngineYard, and perhaps 1 or 2 others. - coldbrew
DelayedJob and especially their upcoming AMQP support are amazing. Great features! - ropiku
Just saw them at Under the Radar and it looks very cool. - Robert Scoble
Anyone who hasn't tried to deploy a rails app with heroku should check it out. It is extremely easy. Sure I can do my own ec2 management, but I think I would rather pay a little more to avoid the hassel. Database management alone with their simple system could be worth the extra cost. - Tom Mancino

"41. Jason Kidd The most efficient NBA player, according to Mark Cuban's new adjusted plus-minus statistical formula, or as it's more commonly known, "Guys, go in there, start crunching numbers, and I don't want to see any of you again until you find me a formula that justifies the Kidd-Harris trade." Meanwhile, check out the splits of the NBA's six quickest point guards against Dallas this season: Tony Parker (31.3 ppg, 7.3 apg, 52 percent FG); Paul (33.3 ppg, 12.5 apg, 57 percent FG); Rondo (16.0 ppg, 14.0 apg, 62.5 percent FG); Harris (29.5 ppg, 10.0 apg); D. Williams (24.8 ppg, 11.5 apg); and D. Rose (19.0 ppg, 7.5 apg). Egads. The good news: Kidd and Nash tied for "Most Fun Teammate To Have" honors for something like the 10th straight year." - Richard Lawler from Bookmarklet

Eminem: The fall and rise of a superstar - News, People - The Independent
"It is a little-known fact that the only book Eminem read as a child was the dictionary. He pored over it, searching for words that rhymed with each other that could later be pulled out of the bag during the freestyle rap "battles" that provided his education in hip-hop. The years spent studying the English language lie at the core of his technical brilliance. They turned him into the greatest rapper of his time. But they did so at a personal cost: for Eminem could be uncharitably described as an anorak. His life starts and ends with music. He writes constantly, scrawling lines on sheets of notepaper in a crabby handwriting. When he's not composing new verse, or messing around in a studio, he'll be listening to hip-hop. "The guy's a studio rat," says producer Terry Simaan, the owner of Oh Trey 9, one of the Detroit's most influential hip-hop labels. "If he feels like it, he'll spend 12, 15 hours a day in a studio." " - bob from Bookmarklet

Sen. McCaskill is right. No one taking TARP $ should be paid more than the president. Poor little bankers will have to make due on $400k.
"Too big to fail" is my new goal in life. No downsides once you get there! - Michael
I heard Jack Welch on the Charlie Rose Show last night describe Wall Street types as people for whom it is all about the money. He described them as people who chose that line of work for one reason...to get rich. If you take away their bonuses we lose leverage over them (in the right climate), to make money. Taxpayers own too much of those investment banks. Allowing some bonuses may keep the incentive to get back some of our $$$. Welch didn't like it either, but said it's pragmatic. - Lynn
His rationale is ridiculous. Welch is yet another one of these types. Left GE just in time for it to blow up on his successor who had to spend a few years getting them out of the business of "financially engineering" their earnings. What business do we so deseperately need to sustain on Wall Street? These aren't commercial bankers getting these bonuses, these are Investment bankers. Their business is dead/gone, and they are just ripping taxpayers off since they can't do the same to their clients anymore. - Christian
