That gives the regulators time to come in, take control of the bank, transfer the assets to the acquiring institution and have the doors ready to open on Monday morning so customers can show up and conduct "business as usual" - only with a new name on the doors of the bank. It's designed to avoid having to close a bank on a business day, which might provoke panic. We saw hundreds of these during the S bailout in the early 1990s.
