"Lots of data center action this week: Yahoo's building a new one in Nebraska, while Microsoft says it's reducing its capex budget for data center spends."

"Bill Gates and other Microsoft execs have been talking about an Internet-enabled refrigerator for years now. As I recall, the goal was to have the fridge use UPC codes to maintain a running inventory and auto-order items via the Internet when you run low. It always struck me as a little too much technology, with a high error cost. I don't want my refrigerator ordering stuff off the Internet just yet."

"There's actually a company planning data centers on de-commissioned cargo ships docked at ports in major cities. They announced their plans in January, but based on the patent application date appear to be about a year behind Google. Here's more: http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archive... ..."

"Informationally, they ALWAYS try to close failing financial institutions at the close of business on Friday. That gives the regulators time to come in, take control of the bank, transfer the assets to the acquiring institution and have the doors ready to open on Monday morning so customers can show up and conduct "business as usual" - only with a new name on the doors of the bank. It's designed to avoid having to close a bank on a business day, which might provoke panic. We saw hundreds of these during the S bailout in the early 1990s. The good news is that the feds are good at this, and when they seize the bank it makes it easier to find a buyer for the institution (since the FDIC - and hence the taxpayers - bear the risk of the bad assets)."

"It'll be interesting to see the details as to how this program will differs from the current AdSense affiliate offers. I gather the DoubleClick/Performics affiliate offers will be image ads.If you're currently an AdSense publisher, you need to apply to this program separately ... it isn't automatically added to your current AdSense account, as has been the case with other AdSense enhancements."

"How about a data center tour that actually shows you something? Here's a video tour of a new $250 million data center fortress in Virginia being prepped for federal government customers: http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archive... ... The data center manager walks you through the power and cooling infrastructure, and describes the "green" elements of the design (especially free cooling)."

"In 2003 a tornado went through my backyard - literally. My wife was in the family room and saw the funnel cloud. She was watching a newschannel on TV at the time, and there was had no warning at all. We lost five trees int he backyard, and were fortunate that none hit the house. The way I see it, 60 seconds warning is a lot better than nothing, which is what we had."

"Interesting article. A lot of folks don't realize the history of the New Madrid faults in Missouri. I wonder if the building codes there require earthquake-survival standards."

"For a second I thought they made the models wear Storm Trooper armor ... the Slave Girl Leia costumes were much easier on the eyes (although less effective against a blaster)."
