Steve its a river with dams - just use them (searches, filters, lists, etc). Might as well as them to slow down the stock market. Welcome to the realtime web!

I've had a long-term policy towards web pages that move in any way -- I avoid them like the plague. I am a text-oriented person, and I like my text to sit still, so that I can quietly contemplate it.
- Sean McBride
I agree. The new Friendfeed does not help me get information, it crushes me under the relentless pace of items that cannot be read. The old interface at least pretends to be friendly enough that I can read interesting items without rushing to catch them before they vanish.
- Shamir Katsu
Great point Shamir, the speed of the updates is devaluing the input and the quality of the content that can be found.
- Russ Jackson
Ah, how sweet and refreshing is the refresh button. Such a simple and brilliant component of any intelligent and well-designed UI.

It's weird, because other folks are playing too, so you have to learn to be well-mannered where manners are loosely defined. Buddhist training for gringos :) A masterpiece of mine is availbale at http://imagebin.ca/view...

Delicious was the first site that introduced me to the social bookmarking phenomenon. There have been many clones since then but social bookmarking has always been Delicious to me. The concept is simple and genius: you can bookmark any page for further reference, quickly find it when you need it using the combination of tags you associated the story with; moreover, you can access your bookmarks from any computer because they are stored online and share your favorite web pages with anyone. It sounds so simple and yet so convenient that it is hard to imagine someone not using it! Of course, like any service, it needs some tricks so that anyone can customize it to match his or her specific needs and personality. Today I am going to share the set of tools that help me make the most of Delicious bookmarks.
- Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
Delicious has always been my favorite as I can keep track of RSS of all my favorite tags. Not something easily available in other social bookmark services. I only wish they had RSS feeds for search results too.

if we're doing plugs, how about SkyDrive? get 25GB for free and can share files with public or friends only. and no, public files do not require Live ID to be downloaded
- Franci Penov
from twhirl
I use filedropper simply because I snagged a free 250gb account for life a while back. Had to cancel the offer rather quickly if I recall correctly

OMFG I can't believe they blended it live at the Giz gallery haha

How irresponsible. I wonder how many man hours were employ for foreign hands to make that one IPhone, just for some arrogantly bored Consumerists to destroy it in the name of "stupid-boredom." Man, tasteless.
- Terence
Are you saying Apple has sweat shops, Terrance?! THIS IS HOW RUMORS START!!
- Mona Nomura
from IM
"Don't try this at home kids!" -- no sh*t sherlock! LOL
- Susan Beebe
@Mona, hahahahaha. Did I insinuate that Apple might perhaps have violated child labor laws or worker's rights law in building the IPhone/IPod? No..I didn't mean that. But, wouldn't be a filthy evil rumor to start( Hopes Santa isn't a FFer)
- Terence
Santa? If you're reading this, I would like Darth Vader for Christmas, please.
- Mona Nomura
Santa, if you get Mona Darth Vader, I would like a real living Care Bear(preferably Grumpy, because he doesn't give a $$%%) for Christmas.
- Terence
Santa can keep the helmet and suit. I just want James Earl Jones to come to my house and read to me (better: can he sing?) for all of 2009.
- Ladybug Heather
If JEJ isn't available, I'd settle for Patrick Stewart or Sean Connery. See, Santa, I can be flexible! (Heck, I'd even take Mr. Worthington there, but don't tell him that or he'll get his head all swelled.)
- Ladybug Heather
don't... they will delete your account. you are talking about corporations here? or real business? How is it that Hamas and Hezballah have a twitter account and somehow twitter thinks I am more dangerous? What a joke this twitter network really is.
- Noah David Simon
Hey.. what can I say? I was left speechless. I don't understand how Chris has all this information flowing. ALL THE TIME.
- Kyle Lacy
24/7: Chris Brogan's brain: Open all night.
- Kyle Lacy
Noah is right. Corporations are not business. This might be better used for the government of China. twitter is not good for small business.
- ❁ⓟⓘⓝⓚ❁ⓖⓐⓡⓓⓔⓝ❁
I completely disagree. I have gotten business from Twitter.. it is about authenticity and creating relationships.. not spamming.
- Kyle Lacy
The problem is most small biz owners have yet to learn how to communicate via social media.. they can learn though.
- Kyle Lacy
time time time... small biz don't have the time... Chris Brogan mentioned large corporations. your point is moot Kyle
- Noah David Simon
and solo act too, Noah. But Kyle, if existing strategies that you are familiar with work for you, then fine. Otherwise, I don't know there's other options but to go out from the comfort zone and learn.
- Hendry Lee
from twhirl
I see a lot of uses for social media.... but it is not advertising and PR. ....education, entertainment... even employment bonding... but promotion is not best here... unless you can really overburden a scene... and that is very very wrong. as for a mom and pop biz... they simply can't get iJustine and Veronica to gee golly wiz the little guy. I'm an artist... and I have optimism... but artists are small business people... and for the most part... this social media experience has been a fail.
- Noah David Simon
if anything this experience has hurt my reputation... I would never recommend doing this unless this is what you want to do full time... twitter is unforgiving and libelous.
- Noah David Simon
that isn't to say that it is bad here. I mention iJustine... who is nice enough to leave my drawings on her facebook profile... however... in the long run promotion here has been a hole in my time. this is an incestuous mono-culture. There is no place for any free thought... or persuasion.
- Noah David Simon
if anything social media is a very efficient brain washing tool. Resistance is futile... you must support this cause or you are blocked and no one reads your comments. it is frankly a sad interaction... and experiment in mob tyranny. The worst aspect of a niche market. Twitter is going to go down in history as a social experiment that made people very miserable and lashed out at the people who put their time into it. ...it remains to be seen if something better can come along....
- Noah David Simon
somehow I have a feeling that what takes twitter's place will not have the kind of zealous idealism that twitter had. the whole idea of free expression failed when twitter left a hole open for @panopticons. free expression and retweeting no longer were legitimate. they crucified the questioner.
- Noah David Simon
free will in an infrastructure is not a good archetype. the inherent nature of socializing will test the lines... so now we know we want structure... and once that enters the equation then it is no longer social like life itself. online interaction is inherantly built on training wheels... (those training wheels better not be business promotion)
- Noah David Simon
btw... I mention free thought and persuasion... the only reason I'm getting away with saying this is because you probably agree with me. it isn't that twitter isn't for big business, but rather that is inherently a mob tyranny and perhaps big corporations are natural to this ecosystem. Why encourage it? It is not good at all.
- Noah David Simon
Is it okay to mix business with the personal on Twitter? My fed agency doesn't have a handle on how to use socmed tools, so I've just been exploring them on my own. I view it as 50% devoted to my personal life and 50% devoted to promoting the NEA and the arts/culture in general. Does it discredit the NEA work that under the same handle I twitter about which workout videos I'm currently...
- Paulette Beete
@Paulette- I say yes. In fact, it's required. You have to be human.
- Chris Brogan
Paulette twitter is perfect for a government agency. That is why twitter accepts terrorist governments like Hamas but not artists like myself. I would keep your personal maintenance to yourself as a rule of thumb. BTW I just farted.
- Noah David Simon
@Noah small biz do not have time because they are confused on how to utilize the tool.
- Kyle Lacy
Kyle the way to use the tool is through group peer pressure and intimidation. "mom and pop businesses" just don't know who to do that well. so I guess we agree Kyle. If they knew how to intimidate and humiliate any self interested individuals then they wouldn't be small business, they would be the Democratic party.
- Noah David Simon
Tremendous post! At the end of the day, there is no question that Twitter optimizes communication-and what company does not want to optimize their communication channels at all levels?!
- Harold Cabezas
Nice article, Chris. These are all great ideas to help promote the use of social media throughout business. I think the most important barrier to adoption is the fact that Twitter is a major distraction...IF you allow it to be. However, if you use it at your own pace and under your control it can be quite a useful tool. Cheers, AL
- Al Bsharah
Interesting system you have going there. My main interface is Google Reader with a FriendFeed Real-time sidebar. GTalk I use through the client software. I am definitely going to try some of your methods out. Seeing how people use different approaches to interacting online always fascinates me. My way of doing things may not be the best.
- Rolf Schewe
Steve, thanks for sharing this productivity system. Much appreciated. Gmail is an awesome tool. I use the GTD inbox add on for task mgt. We have similar goals with Gmail. Make it into a personal productivity, communications and reference KM tool.

Re: Gmail Gateway I this is very cool stuff, but I wish Google Notebook could be integrated with Gmail as a gadget just like the calendar and docs applications. Also, you have made me reconsider whether to install the Google Toolbar. Thank you, Steve

Here's an electronics store chain that is still in business - but you wouldn't know from their sad website: http://www.rextv.com - They are located in very small towns and I only know about them because of, well, obvious reasons.

"Other than the speakers, the most senior folks are generally not at conferences - they are busy doing things, and they can usually talk to whoever they want. So in general, industry events are usually populated by newbies and marginally senior folks - it’s an alliance of people who aren’t quite senior enough to skip the networking thing altogether."

Ah hahaha, I used to love this joke. I remember when my 7th grade computer teacher told it to us, I didn't get it. That was 3rd period. I got home, started doing my homework, turned on the computer and LOLed.

i use tripit and that's about it these days. most of the times i can buy a plane ticket cheaper from the website of the airline i'm using then kayak and orbitz you can follow my trips on tripit if interested, same username

wouldja add UpTake.com to the list? (and before u bash our home page only 5% of our traffic starts there lol)
- Elliott Ng
This list (+FF thread) is awesome! I also find it entertaining that for once instead of retweeting Scoble, he referenced my tweet :P
- Abbas Haider Ali
I'll also add in my vote for TripAdvisor, I don't go anywhere new without checking there first. And Hotwire for hotels (if trip is 100% confirmed). I get ridiculous deals on Hotwire for 5 stars hotels in great 'hoods in specific cities like Atlanta, Toronto, Montreal, and London.
- Abbas Haider Ali
This is a great list. I'm happy to share our recently launched company, www.AirBedandBreakfast.com. The international, peer-to-peer travel site allows you to book rooms with locals, instead of hotel rooms. In addition to saving money, the host becomes your guidebook, offering a local perspective on things like nightlife, coffee shops, events, and sites to see. - Joe, co-founder
- AirBed & Breakfast
I use VMlive.com on my blackberry. The ability to forward the itinerary from my AMEX based corporate travel dept. and have all the details of flights, rental car and hotel at my finger tips is great. The feature of how it integrates with blackberry is particularly valuable. Check it out!
- Tim FitzGerald
Abbas, I like TripAdvisor too. That's why UpTake searches TripAdvisor, Yahoo!, Virtual Tourist, and 1000 other sites with reviews all at once. Try it out! (disclosure: I am UpTake co-founder)
- Elliott Ng
This is a great post. Really gets you thinking about the concept of planning and goal orientation.
- Kyle Lacy
Thanks. I was trying to go to bed extra early tonight, but was totally stressed about lack of organization during this transition period. Now I feel worse. J/k well, not really, but this will be a huge help in organizing more direction tomorrow and the day after...Thanks for your umpteenth solid post!
- Ed Shahzade /NextInstinct
Hopefully, it's a way to chunk things, to parse them easily.
- Chris Brogan
Used it when it first came out. Excellent stuff. (If you have a lot of Twitter people, you may have some FF sorting to do) ... but at least now you can do it! Tks Mona for rehashing this one. (It's a goody :)
- Charlie Anzman
Cool program, but most of my twitter friends are not on friend feed :(
- Les Zaldor
that's how I got started when I moved here, very handy!
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
I got a massive failure when I just tried this. It didn't work for me, as the response for each twitter subscription was either, "is already your friend on Friend Feed", "Unable to subscribe", or "Not on Friend Feed."
- Pete Delucchi
Trish mentioned the same thing. Don't shoot the messenger, I'm on a Mac!
