"@mmmtoblerone - didn't know that about CA - interesting. So, we need reforms AND term limits. @greenm1981 - I think that assumes that people actually pay that close attention to their elected rep and don't just vote in the incumbent. It seems to take a LOT of momentum and anger before an incumbent loses their seat. Of course, no amount of reform is going to fix that issue."
- Dave Sanders
"Nothing will be done in one day. But it will be the first step. There is going to be a revolution one way or the other. Either its going to be a peaceful and thoughtful one, or a bloody, nasty one that will likely lead to a second Civil War and the splitting of the U.S. into regional nations."
- Dave Sanders
"If we are going to change politics in this country, we can't just change campaign finance. We need to also impose TERM LIMITS on Congress. We would be a much more thoughtful and progressive nation if we weren't propping up 80 year old senators for 7 terms."
- Dave Sanders
"Epic Protest FAIL. I'm afraid the irony is probably lost on these guys and their supporters. Maybe someday a huge monolith will come down from the sky and give our race common sense to go with our opposable thumbs."
- Dave Sanders
"None of this is really going to change until there is another Revolution, which will likely lead to the splitting of the U.S. into several different Nations of more like interest. (i.e., East coast goes one way, Texas goes another.) The current levels of stupidity and hatred being expressed by partisans on both sides only makes me think that a revolution / civil war is likely. Think it can't happen here? Remember the U.S.S.R.? They didn't just fall apart because of the fall of socialism, they also fell apart due to regional differences."
- Dave Sanders
I am working with python on linux, could you suggest me a good email bounce detection implementation that would integrate well with a python webapp ?
- Shanmuganandh
I'm sorry, I can't. I do the majority of my programming in windows under .net, and don't really have any experience with python.
- Dave Sanders
from email
thats fine. thanks dave. have a good day.
- Shanmuganandh
"This is ridiculous. We need a real, clear plan for space exploration and space science. It seems to me that NASA needs a very strong leader to come in and reset the entire policy of how NASA is focused. And then maybe run a real PR campaign so that Americans can understand WHY we have a NASA in the first place - not just geared to science-heads, but geared toward the average person. Short of that, I'd almost rather the space exploration side of NASA be disbanded and that money funneled to private space ventures who already have a clear idea of where we want to go and what we want to do. Give Virgin Galactic a couple billion dollars to work on a moon base, with clear regulations in place to ensure that scientific discovery and data assets are released into the public domain, and don't go into patent hell."
- Dave Sanders
Anything that gives Dawn a headache is good. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
It's unusable for me, and I shouldn't have to use lists to make the service usable. There should be an option to determine how quickly your feed refreshes.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
That's not too big an ask really. Also, lists are going to be pivotal, so I think the easier it is to make them, the more successful this will be.
- Will Higgins™
there needs to be smarter filtering to help the flow...it should setup some lists for me automatically
- Jason Stephens
If you follow thousands of people, you most certainly should be using lists to make the service usable.
- Bwana ☠
the biggest problem I have is it takes away from conversations. I LOVED the old interface so much better. It allowed me to control my pace of conversations without feeling like I've missed something.
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
Anything that does not teach you patience, is not your friend.
- Melanie Reed
This is too fast. They need to let you control the speed.
- Steve Rubel
from IM
Too fast without pause. Adds a step that I didn't have to add before. Jury remains out.
- Martha
am i missing something? doesn't seem that different to me. then again, i don't use it much, and i don't subscribe to that many people's feeds. so maybe if you're a friendfeed 'power user', it's too much, but for 'lite' usage, it may not be that much different. UPDATE: Ok, now I am on the right URL. I like the look, and it's not flowing too fast for me. Again, I think the subscribe-to-everyone types are going to have a different experience than us 'lite' friendfeed users.
- Dwight Silverman
One thing to keep in mind is the burst of activity caused by the release. A zillion snap judgments pouring in at once will probably not be the daily norm.
- Mark Czerniec
pause is your friend you know although I'm starting to enjoy the run with the realtime feed
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Also, I'm going to have to start unfollowing more people. This style of realtime really makes the boors stand out.
- Will Higgins™
way too fast is my early verdict. I cannot even appreciate someone's comment and perhaps subscribe to them. I think this is going to negatively affect the number of subscriptions to other commenter
- Lou Paglia
Thankfully I've obsessively organized my FF subscriptions already by lists and weeded out the noise makers, otherwise I'd been overwhelmed. So far I kind of like the new FF UI. Remember if the speed is too much there is always a pause button.
- Keith - @tsudo
This is a breaking point for the real-time web. I bet Friendfeed will have to go back to the old system (but keep the design).
- Steve Rubel
Bwana, that is the way you choose to use FF. Others choose to not use lists and this method was perfectly usable in the standard interface. I thought the whole selling point of FF was that its UI was flexible enough to accommodate the different ways people choose to use the service. An aggregator, content creator, community hub...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Steve - very interesting thought. We all want real-time to a point.
- Dave Hodson
I tend to agree with you (perhaps two interfaces running in parallel, one for normal users and one for power users)
- Lou Paglia
Steve, have you worked out where you specify the syncing between Twitter publishing on the new interface yet? Don't want to overload my Twitter stream . . . :-)
- Ed Richardson
Yeah, I can't keep up. But might just take some getting used to.
- Mike Janicke
You just have to click "Pause" as soon as you want to start reading stuff. I wonder if that shows that real-time as default is not a good idea.
- Alejandro
I just let it wash over me, like twitter. These real-time updates aren't meant to be read, but dipped into and experienced.
- Dave Sanders
I agree. Look, humans are not machines. The ability of my eyes to track all this moving text (both reading and writing) has limitations. It will inevitably induce eye strain. And telling people to pause and unpause in order to manage this make life harder, not easier.
- Carter Rabasa
I just landed on this post, and I see what you are talking about. I actually like the speed. It doesn't seem like most topics will be as hot as this one (so the average case will be slower).
- Adam Loving
I also only follow 77 people - I'm not sure I'm following the people who talk a lot. Need to play with it some more. Looking for recommendations of who to subscribe to.
- Dave Sanders
Carter: most humans don't have more than 20 friends. In which case this will move just fine.
- Robert Scoble
I agree with Robert... when you have a reasonable amount of friends, the speed is fine...when you have thousands, I don't think you have a choice: You must organize your friends.
- Bwana ☠
There's always conversations here regarding what it would take to get more "average" or typical web users on to FriendFeed and I think this is the exact type of thing that will keep those people away. Most people I know wouldn't want to have to bother setting up filters or lists just to keep from feeling like they're having a nervous breakdown looking at their feed. And if they don't set up lists/filters, they'll end up only seeing the same super active users all day.
- Kate
I love it! it is exactly what I wish Twitter was, a constant stream
- Rodzilla
Agreed. I really hope I don't get used to it, could be scary!
- Trevor Childs
I don't think I follow enough people to have a real speed issue on the new FF. I do like live streams though so I think the speed is ok. I really have neglected my filters though and need to spend some time getting things organized.
- Sean Brady
I've seen stats that show Facebook is around 120 friends Scoble, Dunbar number is around 150. Also in FF people follow those that are not their true friends
- Jeremiah Owyang
The old design gave me a headache. This new one makes me nauseous. I thought FriendFeed had so much potential when they launched, but their design aesthetic and product preferences just don't work for me. Unfortunately, I don't see that changing. That said, I'm sure other people like Scoble will like it.
- Joe Lazarus
Exactly Jeremiah. I subscribe to plenty of people who are not friends in the traditional sense of the word, but because they post things I'm interested in. Everyone I've introduced to (ie: forced to sign up for) FriendFeed immediately asked me where to go to find more people to subscribe to.
- Kate
There is quite a lot of data coming into FriendFeed assuming multiple streams per person followed.
- Khürt Williams
Its time for you guys to make lists. I'm following 11.5k people and I'm struggling badly. I'm making lists now :)
- Nicholas James
I have lists and I am still dizzy!
- Steve Rubel
from IM
I just got hammered with a billion updates from the same user. Unfollowed.
- Shaine Mata
Make *more* lists! Seriously, they've turned it from a tool for info junkies into something that will be much more popular.
- Ian Betteridge
Shaine: do NOT just unfollow people like this. You MUST block them. That removes them from the system.
- Robert Scoble
I personally use lists, so I guess it could be OK (except that it makes my "home" feed useless - way too fast.) But interesting that you sort of *have* to use lists w/the new version...way to dictate how to use the product, FF.
- Sarah Perez
If people only use FriendFeed to keep up with their friends, then Facebook wins. They own that realm.
- Hutch Carpenter
Ditches features we were used to, add some nobody asked for, uses space in the stupidest way, it's all-round ugly. try again.
- Zio Bonino
I think that Friendfeed should only update real time when I am at the top of the page. If I am scrolled down, don't updated it. Comments Real-Time though is a very nice feature.
- Tyler (Chacha)
In the time it took to write this comment, 28 things were lined up. So, I got bombarded.
- Tyler (Chacha)
Although, you can always switch to the non-real time version
- Tyler (Chacha)
Gonna be a learning curve. Not as bad when I tried out Twitterfall.
- Matt Martin
Not quite sure yet, but I like that there is a "pause" button in the upper right corner of the feed.
- Craig Villamor
I needed maybe 5 minutes to get used to it (and the @ajbatac userscript to fix the look). still adjusting, but I think it's making me more efficient. I love the new filters - better than just lists
- Gaby K. Slezák
Robert: I know you disagree. But you know, I'm very open to change, I *love* change. But this is a step backwards, I'm kinda sure.
- Zio Bonino
I think it's funny. I've been saying since the beginning to be careful who you follow here. Now everyone is learning why. Zio, it's a HUGE step forward. But I can see how you think it's a step back. Hit "pause" and relax.
- Robert Scoble
I'm not talking about the refresh rate, Robert, it's all the rest. (I'm way faster than that) :)
- Zio Bonino
we will learn and get faster and smarter with it. there´s no other chance in the web anyways. and if the brain aches, it´s only growing ;)
- ★ Esther Rudolph
So many thoughts...but in answer to your question, the stream moves quite quickly. This is fairly familiar since I use Twitterfall to follow events or themes. But I have always used Friendfeed as the place for a deeper and richer discussion forum. The spin rate certainly makes that less palatable.
- Lorin Olsen
It's a conversation killer, and what I love more in FF is the chance to have real conversations... One year ago before the comments thing was introduced, FF was totally a dead place. What brought it to life was all the talk around the different entries.
- Niki Costantini
I'm beginning to understand the new UI. It's not about the speed at all it's about refining your interests and generating lists of topics from the people you subscribe to.
- Russ Jackson
I still think it it needs better organizational navigation.
- Russ Jackson
Russ, they should be able to make suggestions and compile lists on the fly.
- Steve Rubel
Great point Steve. They should be able to do that and that would make for easier navigation
- Russ Jackson
It was in the beginning, but now that things have calmed down its good with me.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Use the filters (they now get saved to a list on the left hand side), Track what you want from the Firehose. New design is there to help customize the experience for everyone.
- David Bausola
Thanks for the feedback, Steve. I think one of the main things I want to accomplish during this beta testing period is making the defaults right and making some things stream in by default, but scaling that back if your are subscribed to a lot of stuff. All this discussion is extremely useful to help us figure that out, and I am confident we can eventually make it work well for you...
- Bret Taylor
going from FriendFeed to anywhere else feels like jumping off a trampoline
- Brian Frank
If it's to fast why not just pause the updates.
- Benjamin
I would pause the updates but then I feel like I'm not keeping up with the Joneses
- Russ Jackson
If you pause the updates, it permanently turns off the updating—even if you log out and log back in—until you press the play icon. In the meantime, you can still see updates by refreshing the page. There is a separate pause option for your home feed and any of your filters.
- Ana
@Brett, me too. This is what a beta launch is all about after all. Some really good stuff in here too.
- Kate
stuff I like best: filters. I used to use bookmarks for my favorite searches. stuff I like less: the UI. I hate that grey, but I thought the vertical bar was useless and a waste of space even in the previous version. those rounded corners are so two years ago. those pictures before every post look so fuckin' facebook, they really really suck. When you post a link it's separated from the linked text, this feels like twitter, and if you feel it's a step forward, please see a doctor asap. :)
- Zio Bonino
The problem is not just that real-time is a step in the wrong direction; it is drawing energy away from those problems with the Friendfeed UI which require the most urgent attention.
- Sean McBride
Hey, don't get me wrong, I love friendfeed. But I didn't expect it to become a sort of facebook for people who can actually read.
- Zio Bonino
I just joined Friendfeed, so I'm still unsure if it adds value to my Social Networking experience. My initial reaction is that it's interface is a marriage of the the features I dislike most about all the services I registered!
- Stacy LaRoche
Nice to have you join, Stacy. Are you using the standard friendfeed.com interface, or the new beta.friendfeed.com interface? I'm intrigued to hear the perspective of someone who is new to the service...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
It's way too fast for me. I know some people suggest using lists, but having a bunch of lists, each in its own Firefox window, chews up system resources faster than a puppy with a slipper. It'd be really nice to have FriendFeed 1.0's slow but steady updating as an option, rather than just Fast Forward and Pause.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I love the realtime view, that's the only one I watch.
- Richard A.
I like the beta, but I think they are too much ambitious for the moment. They forgot that friendfeed is an agregator before all (for the moment!)
- Stanislas Jourdan
" one cup of coffee too many!" I don't understand this statement, is a cup smaller than pot? Is three pots to many?
- John D Reasor
not feeling too fast to me, but i don't really have the volume. background grey's a bit dark, though :-/
- immaterial
Its slowed down for me compared to yesterday. Thats cause I have 84 subscriptions (only). LOL
- Praveen Vasudev
Awesome but do agree with @karl that API is key.
- Moses Kpetigo
I'd like a way to move my entire home feed to a different list in one step. The ability to do something like "Move all all who have used "Second Life" in a message into a Second Life group would be useful.
- Chuck Baggett
Last weekend I bought a brand new Toyota Highlander Hybrid. I did that over an American brand because of the brand promise that Toyotas would never need service and if they did, Toyota would be here for me. That all went to hell for me today.
- Robert Scoble
You need a Twitter for lists and short blogs that are longer than 140 characters.
- Pat Hawks
First, my Highlander went dead in a shopping mall parking lot. So we're stranded with a crying baby. That's bad enough. But it got worse from there. That's excusable. Everything has problems.
- Robert Scoble
Then I called the number on all the instruction manuals. The recording said Toyota was closed today. Strike two.
- Robert Scoble
So I called my dealer. Service department closed. Strike three.
- Robert Scoble
I'm not sure it'd ever occur to me to call corporate or the dealership for road service...
- Ken Sheppardson
No one would help me out. No one would take ownership of my problem. So now I'm waiting for a tow truck to tow this piece of crap to a dealer. Which is closed until tomorrow. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
Ken: there is no road service numbers in any of the manuals.
- Robert Scoble
*cough*Honda*cough*...they may not have hit you up on Twitter while you were making your purchasing decision but they make a truly awesome car. It can be -30 celcius and I don't plug my car in overnight and it STILL starts in the morning. In all fairness though it can happen to any car and any brand, how they recover is what will set them apart.
- Devlin Dunsmore
Hybrids are not ready for prime-time. Their maintenance costs and ongoing problems don't make worth it.
- Spencer
Devlin: Honda might just get my next purchase.
- Robert Scoble
Does Honda print road service numbers in their manuals? If not, you'll have to keep looking, Robert.
- Ken Sheppardson
It is the service after the sale that sells the next 20 of them. Robert, I know it is distasteful, but, tell Toyota corporate what a blog post from you will do to their international sales. Seriously. Apology, rental and flowers will be a good first step.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
A brand that fails to live up to reasonable customer expectations will be called on it publicly. That's the reality of the hyper-connected world of social media, now that people are discovering word of mouth has moved online. Re: simplicity - a Honda salesperson told me when I was shopping for my first Civic in 1996 to forgo power windows because they were not as reliable as hand-cranked ones. Wow. Clinched the sale.
- Victor Panlilio
Here in Texas individuals have the ability to back out of large purchases (house, car, etc) if we want to within a few days, great little thing to keep companies on their toes.
- Justin Yost
To me that's a dealership issue first... I've gone through the purchase process on a Sienna in the last few years, and IIRC the dealer included road service info as part of the delivery process.
- Ken Sheppardson
Honestly I think your expectations are too high for a sunday. Toyota will surely take care of the problem on monday, but you have to remember that the auto dealers don't work on Internet Time like you do Scoble. Yes, it sucks, and yes, sometimes brand new cars have issues. I would not have expected the dealer to do anything for me in this situation until they were open. Instead, that's why I buy AAA membership - for times when I really need service in an emergency.
- Dave Sanders
Ken most new vehicles have roadside as a part of the warranty. That's the manufacturer or the distributor, not the dealership.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Oh and I've done the screaming kid in the car thing too - 4 times. With a Dodge. Then I bought my Toyota Sienna and have had it long enough to pay it off and don't see getting rid of it anytime soon. Never, ever going back to Dodge.
- Dave Sanders
Mark: So would you expect that contact info to be in the owner's manual or some supplemental doc?
- Ken Sheppardson
If I worked for Ford, I'd be calling you right now offering you a ride.
- Jesse Stay
Again, Dave, 24/7 roadside assistance is a part of the factory warranty.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Robert: Emergency Toyota Roadside Assistance is 1-877-304-6495. I got this from the 'Roadside Assistance Card' that was in the same vinyl envelope as my Toyota manuals. General customer service is 1-800-331-4331.
- Kevin Fox
Ken, yes, it should be on a card or in a brochure describing the service.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I vaguely remember skipping it when I bought a Mazda years ago since I had AAA.
- Ken Sheppardson
I love AAA, my parent's have used it for years and so will I.
- Justin Yost
Yuo're angry as hell and using your Internet presence to give a brand a bad name. It's Sunday ... they are entitled to close. Cars break down ... live with it ... it sucks. Pay for a rescue service ... call them in future when the car breaks. Stop whinging online.
- Joe Breen
SOP for cars. Same thing happen to us with our POS Mini a few months after we bought it. That's why you buy decent car insurance and maybe back it up with AAA. We had no problems. AAA covered the towing to the closed dealership (Service dept. are ALWAYS closed on Sundays. Some are closed on Saturdays too.) Insurance covered the rental at $39 per day. I went with AAA tow over Mini roadside because Mini said 4 hours. AAA was there in 30 min.
- Anika
It shouldn't even matter that most US Toyota dealers and offices are closed right now. It's Monday in Japan, where Toyota's headquarters are.
- Zian Choy
Remember the good ole days when if your car broke on a Sunday you knew it wasn't getting fixed because everything was expected to be closed.
- Mark Powell
Joe - If he was promised this kind of service and then it wasn't there for him, he's got a good reason to use his very loud voice to call out the problems.
- Andrew
I have never had a problem reaching BMW, Land Rover or Ford Roadside Assistance on any day, including Sunday, or any time of day, including 3:00am, for any type of service from lockout to fuel delivery.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Agree - I would use any means available to make as much negative noise about this as I could. Its a NEW CAR for crying out loud (literally in the case of the baby).
- Michael Neale
Mark: I'm sure you'd have the same experience if you called the Toyota roadside assistance number.
- Ken Sheppardson
Mark, I mean RE "I have never had a problem reaching BMW, Land Rover or Ford Roadside Assistance on any day, including Sunday, or any time of day, including 3:00am, for any type of service from lockout to fuel delivery" I believe you'd get the same response if you called Toyota roadside assistance
- Ken Sheppardson
Zian, did you really type that? Like seriously? Because it's Monday in Japan, a car dealership in CA should be miraculously open? Pfffft As for the new car thing, that's why CA has lemon laws. He has options; return the car or let them fix it. This is all so silly.
- Anika
BTW, when you do call the Toyota Roadside Assistance Number 1-877-304-6495, you get "Thank you for calling Toyota Roadside assistance. ... If you are calling to initiate roadside assistance because your vehicle is currently disabled, please press 1"
- Ken Sheppardson
Hmmm... Oh, and Ken, thank-you for clarifying as I was thinking something different. In a new light I would tend to agree.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
A brand new car dies in a parking lot days after being purchased? That's awful and inexcusable. I think I'd want a full refund so I could go buy from a different maker.
- Tom Harrison
I almost want to agree with Tom. Almost. I'd be pretty heated, though.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Do what Bob Scoble says and do what I think.
- Mark Watson
Actually as a consumer, I think Robert - actually anyone - has the right to complain if a big ticket item like a car exhibits problems like this. Additionally, if they can't help (yes even on a weekend) then they should cover the cost of the trouble and lost time.
- Mo Kargas
Tom: Interestingly, a lot of new cars are having problems like this because they've been sitting in port for weeks and their batteries are dying (especially SUVs which have an even longer supply chain). The dealership should charge a new car's battery before selling it nowadays, but perhaps they didn't. Roadside Assistance should try jumping first.
- Kevin Fox
I've never had to call anyone for assistance...ever. I think there is something they say about "needy people" I just forget what it is. I've spent enormous amounts of time in the middle of nowhere and I just have no pity. How about a little self-reliance? Scoble, you have some sense of self-entitlement with which I cannot identify. Perhaps this is you trying to justify living your life "out in the open" constantly connected to people online?
- coldbrew
Wait, so do they have road side assistance or not? I grew up with European cars only, since my parents refused to drive Japanese. Oh, the irony LOL And coldbrew? The man JUST purchased the vehicle. I'd be mad as hell.
- Mona Nomura
from fftogo
Mo, Roadside Assistance and/or his car insurance (assuming it' s not basic liability) would have covered any of this. The car failing is whatever. We live in CA and we have AWESOME consumer protection for these things. This, is needless drama, IMO.
- Anika
I should get a discount for solving my own car issues since eventually (if not already) the cost of a car will reflect people acting like this with such demands. I feel the same way about people that need to call their cell phone provider and ISP as well. I have to pay more to support people that tend to want others to solve their problems.
- coldbrew
@Mona - What was wrong with driving Japanese cars then, out of curiosity? Poor quality or reliability? The fact that they were Japanese? (I'm probably thinking of the clichéd national brand loyalty thing mostly)...
- Tyson Key
I guess you people in the magical world of no snow don't have a company called AAA? It stands for the Automobile Association of America, and they pay for themselves at least twice over every year in a normal climate. I have a gold membership. Unlimited towing distance, they yank me out of snow banks, they jump start me, and they change my tires if I have a flat. I'd never imagine not having them.
- Matthew DeVries
Malone: of course it is needless drama. Most interactions between Scoble and large companies are needless drama. If he gets heart burn, it certainly isn't his fault...it's Chipotle's or AstraZeneca's (purple pill).
- coldbrew
DeVries: You can't change your own tire? How about asking another person around you to give you a jump?
- coldbrew
Demands? If Robert purchased a used car from the 80s, I would agree he's being a drama king. But a new hybrid Highlander is not cheap. Yes, lemons happen, but every consumer deserves customer service from the makers and NOT from third party entities.
- Mona Nomura
from fftogo
Thing is, @coldbrew, that most makers now include roadside assistance/towing in the factory warranty, which is part of the vehicle and therefore part of the price. Since you pay for the service, why not use it. I somewhat routinely lock my keys in vehicles because I'm absent-minded/stupid, and, I call the number.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Mona: you have no idea whether or not he left the lights on in the car, do you? The details are still quite fuzzy, and I believe there is a reason for it.
- coldbrew
coldbrew, I don't much about Robert besides some people seem to hate/love him and that he's Alex's brother.
- Anika
Tyson - European makers have the best customer service when it comes to vehicles. My parents' rationale was: if we're going to pay XX for a Japanese car, we'd rather give our business to XX, which gives better service. My parents were born and raised in Japan - they were nationalists, but more economical ;)
- Mona Nomura
from fftogo
Aah, that clarifies things a little. ;)
- Tyson Key
coldbrew - I used to always change my tires, but then I got a 4WD 3/4 ton pickup, and frankly the factory provided jack does not provide me with a sense of sturdy stability when the truck is up on it, I just assume let the AAA guy with his professional quality jack get it up in 2 pumps.
- Matthew DeVries
For a needless drama, one would think you would just sit on the sidelines, it appears enough interest to post about multiple times, just sayin', if I bought a car a week ago and it died, I would want answers.
- Patrick Boegel
Malone: nor do I, just what I observe. Scoble goes into a mall, leaves the dome light on, battery dies, and Scoble needs someone or some entity to solve the "problem", and that is what I will believe until he scans in documentation proving otherwise (he "lives in public", right?).
- coldbrew
I don't know about that, Mona. My five experiences with European car ownership (all VWs) were uniformly poor from a (dealer) service perspective. I think it may have more to do with the dealers themselves, regardless of brand. Personally, I avoid bringing any car to the dealer for service if at all possible, though I would probably be looking to the dealer if I were in Robert's shoes.
- Jim Hearts FF
Boegel: It is a question of timing, but while I take a break from Sunday work (OMG), I thought I'd chime-in. The fact that every product or service should bow down to Scoble b/c of his web presence is just a bit annoying for me. Just like your comment.
- coldbrew
@coldbrew this isn't about Scoble. This is about a two-day new vehicle with a mechanical issue. Caused by the owner, not caused by the owner... not really relevant. The manufacturer is failing to stand behind the product.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
It is a question of timing that you would take your time to complain that you feel he is complaining too much? Is that irony or just frustration that people pay attention to Robert? Either way it is silly.
- Patrick Boegel
Is there a law like Godwin's Law that describes how threads degenerate into people criticizing somebody for criticizing somebody for criticizing somebody for etc, ad nauseum?
- Ken Sheppardson
Patrick, must be one of the lovers. You clearly didn't read my posts. Too bad for you.
- Anika
The dealerships ARE open today. They ARE happy to sell you one. Just aren't able to service customers on Sunday. One fallout? Maryam is pissed at me and says I am not allowed to buy my Prius so Toyota already lost one sale.
- Robert Scoble
Hybrids are still in beta. You don't have to be a tech blogger to know that.
- Mattb4rd
No, I read your posts, but I am trying to understand how you interpret needless drama, and even if so, why would you or anyone else for that matter partake in something entirely needless. Just fun for me to observe the conversation from both sides.
- Patrick Boegel
VandenBerg: without all the facts, we don't know if the issue was owner-caused or not. Unless you know something not mentioned in this thread??? I don't think batteries are supposed to last forever, or that people wait a whole week to address their issues. Why didn't this get posted on Thur or Fri?
- coldbrew
Boegel: While complaining has its place, I don't believe Scoble's complaints are merited; and before I have all the facts, I'm am merely pointing it out because of Scoble's influence. People should be aware of the fact that sometimes Scoble fucks up, and wants others to solve his fuck up. Get it?
- coldbrew
Rule #1: Never upset a blogger's wife
- Jesse Stay
Boegel: just point out where I said nobody ever had a right to complain and we'll be set.
- coldbrew
@coldbrew it is more likely than not it is an operator error that caused the issue. The complaint I have is why did Toyota Roadside, which is a part of the warranty, not answer the phone to support their product.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Coldbrew: His complaint's may not be merited by you, or many others, but he is I think simply trying to make a point of how technology and communication intersect to attempt to drive results. You'll note, I never said he did not make a mistake, I am just observing the idea of the conversation. Why are you worried about Scoble's "influence" anyhow? What is your fear, that people will act the way he does with the use of technology? Big deal. Some people will be right, some people will be wrong.
- Patrick Boegel
Mattb4rd: it isn't that it broke that is the problem. Everything breaks. It is that two dealers didn't even have numbers of tow companies available or think of helping me out. I am lucky I had an iPhone and could find those on my own. First response SHOULD have been "we will pay for you to tow it here."
- Robert Scoble
If this isn't how social media should be used why are all the car companies on Twitter?
- Robert Scoble
Drove my Nissan Sentra for 11 years; with the exception of an oil leak issue that would have killed the car forever, had a friend not heard it and told me what was wrong, it was highly reliable. My '97 RAV4 goes and goes and goes, although on rare occasions, it's hard to get it to start (I think it's an issue with the clutch).Granted, I never got 100,000 miles on either (at least, if I've gotten to 100k on the RAV, I haven't noticed). I got both used.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
VandenBerg: Ok, I agree about Roadside-A not responding, if included in w/e warranty. But, I have a problem with people not taking responsibility for themselves, however. These types of things do drive costs higher, and "support" is a line-item.
- coldbrew
Note: I am NOT asking for special treatment here. I just want great service. If I wanted crappy service I wouldn't have bought a Toyota.
- Robert Scoble
Where is Scott Monty in all of your search? I would think he would be first to respond.
- Jesse Stay
Boegel: suggesting I'm "worried" about anything related to Scoble is ludicrous. I simply have an interest, possibly academic, in having some perspective and one's ability to remain objective. Most people are sheep, and might follow Scoble's example, yes.
- coldbrew
Seems like one of the weaknesses of social media is it gives individual incidents and anecdotes disproportionate influence over a brand.
- Ken Sheppardson
This is the first time I've heard of anything like this happening with Toyota. And as far as them being closed, there is really nothing that can be done about that. Dealerships and shops are always closed on Sundays, even if you had the same problem with a Chevy I guarantee that you would still have to wait until tomorrow.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Robert: What response did you get from Toyota Roadside Assistance? (repeating number, 1-877-304-6495)
- Ken Sheppardson
Jesse: I am far more likely to buy a Ford Focus now instead of a toyota Prius. On other hand it IS Sunday. On the other hand this is a global world and if you want a global brand these companies should be available.
- Robert Scoble
Scoble, if you came into any technical forum online, and explained the incident relating to your car in a similar manner, you would get eatin' alive for your lack of facts. You could have said, "Toyota doesn't have Roadside-A or nad service on weekends, that is a problem for me as a consumer of their products."
- coldbrew
@Robert I'm not making fun of the situation. Being stranded with your family is no laughing matter, and like others have said, mechanical problems can occur at any time with any vehicle. For now, I prefer the tried and true internal combustion engine. At least I can *usually* get one of those going again if there's a problem.
- Mattb4rd
/me calling roadside-a now EDIT: Ok, one needs to have purchased a "Roadside Assistance Contract" and I have no idea what that costs or if Scoble bought one (though I believe every car under 30-days old should have it included).
- coldbrew
Coldbrew: Maybe you could pass along Scoble's number to them.
- Ken Sheppardson
Anika, in the interest of taking discussion of your heated response to my comment off Robert Scoble's FriendFeed, please e-mail me at Zian.Choy@gmail.com.
- Zian Choy
This thread is going non-linear in, like, six directions simultaneously. I love it.
- Ken Sheppardson
Its Sunday... The service department is closed because you cant get parts delivered, and "No one would take ownership of (your) problem." because for the most part, the people that get stuck working on a Sunday at a dealership don't have any authority. I am sure some one probably wanted to help you, just not at the cost of their job. You would be amazed at the kinds of seemingly innocuous things people get fired over in places like that.
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
Coldbrew: the tow guy couldn't get it started. I DO have a sense of entitlement. Toyota is praised as the top service company in the world. I paid top dollar to buy one (something that this year very few people are doing -- even Toyota is having troubles). But this experience makes me think Toyota really sucks.
- Robert Scoble
I hate to say this but come Monday morning there may be the reverse blogger effect declaring that "shiat happens." To be fair, I own a Prius and it's been glitch free since late 2005. The cost of owning it is literally the same as any Toyota. Same maintenance costs so far. I guess I'm lucky I never had a breakdown on a Sunday. Even then my wife will more likely blame me for not reading the manuals and contact info more carefully than blaming the brand. Hope Toyota gives you star treatment in the morning...
- Glenn Batuyong
@J. Abdul-Qahhar Which is why Toyota North America, Inc. has a phone number to call. This isn't a dealership issue.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
That being said, big brands have had their asses handed to them by powerful media personalities (remember when Steve Jobs personally called a user after the guy ranted about his lemon Mac setup). This may teach Toyota and other foreign manufacturers to include some minimal form of OnStar emergency line for situations like this.
- Glenn Batuyong
I always thought TOY (and all JAP car companies) were praised for their manufacturing savvy, not customer service [Sheppardson: I can't control where people take the discussion ;)
- coldbrew
sorry for the trouble, should of bought german :)
- sean percival
And then you'll have people bitching about how ToyStar (sic) is "stealing their freedoms, tracking their every move and selling their data on" or something like that. You can't have everything.
- Tyson Key
My parents are very pleased with their Ford Focuses - the Sync technology is superior than most voice-activated systems I've seen. I drove my sister's (owned by my parents) out to BlogWorld last year and loved it. Then again, I have an Uncle that has worked for Ford most of his life, designed many of the cars, and we have an inside connection there, as well as family discounts. I've still had wonderful experience with Ford - I've owned both Ford and Toyota (nothing else).
- Jesse Stay
Oh, and the "it's reduced to useless silicon, since the developers decided to build upon an analogue cellular network that will be EOL'd in a few years" problem... ;)
- Tyson Key
Still, I'm very surprised that a Toyota (or a Honda) would flake out so soon after purchase, given their reputation. Although anything happens, these days.
- Tyson Key
Mona: JAP is just like USA go look at the Olympic outfits again (and, STFU ;). EDIT: I was wrong JPN is the symbol. My bad, Mona. If you think I'm racist, oh well...call me an indian instead of native american.
- coldbrew
@Glenn Batuyoung I have a feeling that your right. I think this is just Robert blowing off steam because things aren't going the way he wants them too. Hell, most of us would do the same thing.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I have a Toyota Sienna that is about to be turned in on lease. It has by in large been a very nice car. Will I buy another Toyota? Hard to say. A couple weeks ago my wife was driving it on the highway. No cars in front of her on a smooth road and the moonroof just exploded. The logical thing would have been a rock. Unless it fell out of an airplane there was no rock. I spoke to the dealer as well as corporate. Each said there was nothing they could do for me unless I bought another Toyota.
- gfurry
Hey, Toyota was the company that billed a truck as off-road, then told a new owner that his warranty was voided by mud on the alternator. Having never gotten mud on my alternator (I think), I'm not sure how much sense that makes, but the owner of the dead vehicle thought it was shabby treatment.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Stay, given your stellar ability to be objective, I think I'll just believe what you say and buy a Focus!
- coldbrew
They were willing to take care of me by discounting a new Toyota. Nice to see they only care about getting a new customer and not taking care of the one they already have.
- gfurry
You'd have the same problem with ANY car brand that doesn't offer roadside assistance as part of the purchase, which most don't. Honda? Nope. Only if you buy their extended warranty. That's why I have roadside assistance through State Farm.
- Alex Scoble
Despite individual anecdotes to the contrary, Consumer Reports April 2009 issue ranks the automakers by overall average reliability test score: Results are Honda 78, Subaru 75, Toyota 74 ... Ford 63, GM 57, Chrysler 48
- Ken Sheppardson
Sean: yes. Toyota has a bunch of PR people on Twitter. I haven't heard from anyone yet.
- Robert Scoble
coldbrew, well, I did say I've *only* used Toyota and Ford and I have family working for the company, so it might be worth checking out all your options. I do speak on experience though - frankly, I've liked both cars (I used to own a Camry, and I've owned an Escort, Windstar, and F-150, and driven my parents' Focus, Fusion, Camry, and Avalon). I think both brands are great. I'd probably buy a Ford Focus or Fusion if I bought a new car now though (or maybe a Mustang if it was just for me).
- Jesse Stay
Stay, I've mostly owned TOY and FORD as well. My F250 rocked, and I put it through hell (well, just 2 cliffs, but still ;).
- coldbrew
coldbrew - I've actually set out to get a large number of people pissed off at me for non-related reasons stemming from a single incident, and I've not managed to get as many people pissed at me for as many varied reasons in one thread as you have managed....Which begs the question, are you trying to win some kind of bet or something?
- Matthew DeVries
coldbrew, I LOVE my F-150. It will be a long time before I replace it, unless I replace it with a better F-150.
- Jesse Stay
BMW costs a premium for many reasons. But if they do break, they have an 800 number and they send someone.
- David L Smith
So does Toyota. The number's listed above. Several times.
- Ken Sheppardson
DeVries, I know the interwebz is serious business and all, but highly doubt anyone is pissed at me. I'm not exactly anyone to care about. Are you certain my hobby of taking a shot at keeping people honest begs any questions at all?
- coldbrew
coldbrew - Robert made another thread that stated all but "I'm pissed at coldbrew cause he's being a tool". So, your doubt meter is about the worst calibrated piece of equipment this side of that mars lander that was set on metric, but being driven by English unit gauges.
- Matthew DeVries
I am on my second Hybrid I had A Highlander and traded it in on a Prius love them both. Everyone I know who first gets a hybrid does one of two bad things or both. They leave some thing on lights, something pluged in the 120 V outlet and run down the 12V battery then you can not start the car. The second thing people do is start the car and set waiting to hear the engine sound calling for help because they think its not on. Hybrids take some getting use to for everyone.
- John D Reasor
Well, DeVries. some people take criticism poorly. I would not be scared of an academic debate with Scoble in the slightest, however. And if Scoble and you are pissed at me, that is only 2 folks. I wouldn't care if it were 20 blow hards, tbh. Using facts could help your argument, but YMMV.
- coldbrew
DeVries, look at the 2nd comment from his brother. Now, I think you should be quiet and let the 'reasoned people' have a discussion. I'm sorry you are trying to turn this into some display of ad hominem attacks. Good luck with that.
- coldbrew
Alex - most don't come with Roadside these days? both by GMC and Infiniti did....
- Jeff (the メガマクダジ of FF)
Hondas don't. I'm sure that Ford, Mazda, Toyota, Chevy, Dodge and others don't. Hyundai is a special case. Because of the huge quality problems they had in the past they had to offer huge incentives in their warranty and customer support to get people to buy them. Upscale brands like Audi, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, GMC, etc. also offer it as a reason why their premium prices are worth it.
- Alex Scoble
Scott: all I have right now is my iPhone and my blog sucks on an iPhone.
- Robert Scoble
Oh, and I have to belatedly say that I'm sorry you are going through this. I'd be pissed too.
- Alex Scoble
Alex: Was that a joke you snuck in there? "Upscale brands like Audi, BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, GMC, etc" ;-)
- Ken Sheppardson
No, that's not a joke. Those are regarded as upscale brands. Audi is the upscale brand of VW. BMW is the upscale brand of BMW. Lexus is the upscale brand of Toyota. Infiniti is the upscale brand of Nissan. GMC is the upscale brand of GM. Mercury and Lincoln are the upscale brands of Ford. Acura is the upscale brand of Honda.
- Alex Scoble
Who considers GMC an upscale brand, Alex? :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
DeVries: I will spell it out for you: You called me a tool (in Scoble's name) and when I looked at the thread you referenced, I see most people agreeing with me. Therefore, you decided (in my opinion) to make this an ad hominem attack (calling me a tool where nobody else did; I don't think the word means what you think it means) on me, rather than confront the facts. Do you require further explanation?
- coldbrew
Hmm, aren't Hyundais essentially Korea's answer to the Skoda? (i.e. Started off as unreliable, mediocre, cheap cars, and finally got a reality check when people stopped buying them, until offering incentives in the hope that someone will try one out)...
- Tyson Key
People: roadside assistance is NOT included with a new toyota. Robert: go ahead and buy the Ford. But, you should hope the Ford service people are nicer, because you'll get to know them well.
- Anthony Citrano
from BuddyFeed
"top dollar" and "Toyota" in the same sentence! The terrorists have won! PS: I've never heard Toyota praised as being #1 in service. Quality, yes. Ass kissing on Sunday nights, no.
- Anthony Citrano
from BuddyFeed
Got it. I had an absolutely wonderful Toyota experience and I am an A lister so I shouldn't complain about having a dead car and no service on Sunday. I understand now, sorry for forgetting my role in life is to only praise companies. I will get back to that now.
- Robert Scoble
LOL, Robert. You just won the internets.
- Alex Scoble
I have Honda Roadside Assistance. I always make sure I have it, because I am a girl:-) Before that I've had Audi, Porsche, and Chrysler Roadside Assistance. And they are never truly useful on a weekend, because they outsource. They are all only as good as the outsource.
- Francine Hardaway
This thread will look like a love fest when Robert's MacBook dies.......
- Matthew DeVries
Okay, I just read this thread, and I need to understand something. Did we just beat up on Robert for wanting service on a new car that would work for more than a week? I realize I'm late getting to the game, but I just want to sure I'm understanding what happened.
- Ha3rvey (not Akiva)
Yes, ha3rvey, your comprehension skills are intact and fully functional.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I wold be SUPER pissed if my new car left me stranded the first week. Robert, give 'em hell.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
I'm pretty sure we've already gone through the "My Mac died" post by Robert. Or perhaps it was just the "My Mac has serious problems" post.
- Alex Scoble
I still want to know what Toyota Roadside Assistance told you, Robert.
- Ken Sheppardson
You should never get a brand new car anyways. It is always better to get a used car. Unless you are getting something that cost like $100,000 or something.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Ha3vey: No, we beat up Scoble for: 1) abusing his power as any influencer (aka "a lister") 2) Not purchasing an Roadside Assistance Contract and expecting the service anyway 3)Having the reason be related to a direct operator error on his part
- coldbrew
Robert has every right to complain. After breaking down in the mojave desert in a Ford and being stuck in a hotel there for 5 days waiting on a catalytic converter, you can be sure I'll never buy another one.
- Head Ov Metal
Then there's the Chevy that had the short in the dash and caused steering to lock up and go manual at highway speeds when all power was lost. Don't even get me started. We're talking threatening someone's security here. He has every right to complain.
- Head Ov Metal
This is being a bully, "See what I can do when you don't please me?"
- coldbrew
And there you have it, "Head Ov Metal" agrees with you.
- coldbrew
I have to say that I think this is a huge over reaction. To swear off of a brand because of this is very short-sighted as far as I'm concerned. What does the normal warranty include? If your 5DMkII had died on the first day you had it, would you have sworn off it and switched everything to Nikon? Sure this is a big-dollar purchase and I imagine you're very disappointed (I would have been as well), but you might want to re-evaluate tomorrow after you've actually talked to someone with authority at Toyota.
- Kenton
Kenton: my Canon 5D, if it died, wouldn't have left my family stranded at a shopping mall. For quite a while the car even locked us out of it. What if we had had Milan inside? It's not the breakdown, either, that has me angry. It's how I was treated as a customer AFTER the breakdown. They all sent me to a phone number that had no humans on it. I actually got m ore support from people here on friendfeed than I did from Toyota itself. Which is TOTALLY WRONG.
- Robert Scoble
Being the car business. We had customers unsatisfied with their newly purchased New or Pre-Owned cars for what ever reason, so we just took back their vehicle and put them into another. If the sale department was open on Sunday, they should have helped you even though they don't warranty the vehicle. They do have the repsonsibilty to take care of your transport issue and needs. They should put themselves into your shoes.
- Harry
What if you rolled it off a cliff? With Milan in there?
- coldbrew
coldbrew: a cab wouldn't have helped us. We had a car that was in total computer crash mode. It wouldn't unlock. Then it wouldn't let us roll up the windows. I had thousands of dollars in equipment inside. What, am I just supposed to take a cab home and leave a dead car in the parking lot? Come on, dude, you really are stretching now. We fixed the problem by figuring out a tow company to call ON OUR OWN and then called a relative to give us a ride home. No thanks to Toyota.
- Robert Scoble
Wow......Long live the new Orionstarr......
- Matthew DeVries
To add insult to injury that by the time our relative came to pick us up the dealer was closed and the dealer didn't call me to find out what was wrong with the vehicle that was towed there.
- Robert Scoble
Congratulations, at least you learned how to call a tow truck. What will you do for your next feat ?
- coldbrew
"...figuring out a tow company to call ON OUR OWN and then..." this one time at band camp?
- coldbrew
coldbrew: you must work at a really crappy company if this is what you expect from companies. I work for a really great company that has HUMANS 24/7 to answer the phone and take care of problems.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: What did the Toyota Roadside Assitance folks tell you when you called their 800 number?
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken: I never got through. I got the number from you all after I had already called the tow truck. I complained online only AFTER going through the real world runaround.
- Robert Scoble
Interesting that neither of the two dealers gave me that number and it wasn't included in the manuals (which were hard to read because we were in an underground parking garage and the car's lights wouldn't come on).
- Robert Scoble
Cool, I just called Toyota Roadside Assistance, and I spoke to "karen" who told me that I needed a contract and she needed the last 6 digits of the VIN.
- coldbrew
coldbrew: I wouldn't have been able to read the VIN. I was in a very dark parking garage.
- Robert Scoble
"Or the last name of the registered owner." ARRRR you kidding?
- coldbrew
Robert I'm not saying you shouldn't be disappointed or angry. But to say you'll never buy another product from this company, no matter how good their reputation may be, is looking at it from emotion, not logic. You didn't buy this vehicle because of emotion, you were very logical about how you made your decision. If this was typical of Toyota, I suspect you wouldn't have bought on in the first place.
- Kenton
I use my cell phone as a flashlight. Just a thought... :-)
- Lisa L. Seifert
Robert: When you do get access to the car again and you're not in a stressful situation, I'd be interested to know if there's a card somewhere in the jacket that holds the manual, warranty info, etc that talks about roadside assistance. BTW, it might not sound like it, but I really do empathize with you--being stuck in that situation that is--even though I've been giving you a hard time about writing off Toyota because of it.
- Ken Sheppardson
Kenton: well, yes, I am emotional. I'll let you sit in a dead car for hours with a crying baby and trying to get some help from tech support and see how emotional you get. That said, I tend to go with companies that provide extraordinary support.
- Robert Scoble
Ken: I couldn't find it. I won't be shocked to learn that it was there somewhere. But that didn't matter. The dealer themselves didn't know the number and kept sending me to the wrong one. That's what really got me pissed.
- Robert Scoble
I know this is gonna sound ridiculous, but I have always owned very old, used cars (jeeps). I recently had to get a newer, more reliable, highway friendly car. I settled on a BWM 528xi, let me explain why: while it is a little higher priced, when you level the playing field across features, warranty and price, I got 7 years 100,000 miles, ALL maintenance during this time is free, including brakes (and no it isn't a lease). they are reliable as all hell.
- Erik Boles
they have 24x7 roadside assist for $200/year (cheaper than onstar). I have honestly never been happier dude. I think it is worth checking out. -- oh yeah, I also get 27 MPG highway, and 21 city.
- Erik Boles
Erik: Maryam wants me to keep our BMW instead of getting a Toyota Prius. I agree. BMW would say "where are you, we'll be right over." Toyota didn't even know the roadside assistance phone number.
- Robert Scoble
I'm surprised the dealer didn't send someone from sales (maybe even the person who sold you the vehicle) to help you--if for no other reason than to "Save the Sale." They likely had a courtesy shuttle right there--the dealership falied more than the company-at-large IMO.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Scoble: This seems a ploy unless you find less influential people with a problem using the customer service channels of a company and hold that company's feet to the fire. They did that on This American Life with MCI and some lady's phone bill and it was quite interesting.
- coldbrew
Well, at least the customer service agents spoke English...? There's nothing more frustrating than explaining the reason for calling over and over to people that can't communicate :( Eric - I agree re: BMW.
- Mona Nomura
from fftogo
So, if Robert's keeping the BMW... Louis? You wanna' buy my Honda Civic del Sol. 1993. Red. Targa top comes off and fits in the trunk. I need to buy something bigger, like a Jeep. I still need it to feel like a convertible, yet have room to transport my massage table. It'll be a great run-around car for you & the Mrs. No room for the twins, though. :-D
- Lisa L. Seifert
Lisa: let me calm down a bit and let's see what really is going wrong with the hybrid tomorrow. I need a reliable car and the BMW is very. It even has a flat right now and drives on like nothing happened.
- Robert Scoble
No problem, Robert. I'm not sure I'm really ready to part with the del Sol yet anyway. It gets AMAZING gas mileage and I'm commuting from East Oakland to the Presidio... :-|
- Lisa L. Seifert
Toyota PR just checked in over on Twitter. I gave them the names of the two dealers. One thing, I haven't yet sent in my dealer rating card. These things are important for how everyone is rewarded at the dealership. I'm giving my dealer failing marks.
- Robert Scoble
Really? I always thought people bought Mercedes and BMW because of the name. From what I've seen from Consumer Reports, those two brands are always in the shop... hence why I've always thought, "instead of buying for the glamour, why not buy a car based on reliability ratings?" Robert, unfortunately happened to find the lemon in the lot. Toyota is gonna have hell to pay :)
- Glenn Batuyong
Robert, sorry I'm just getting around to this - I've been out with my family all day. As I promised before, I stand by ready to give you a truly excellent Ford experience if you'll let me. Instead of that Prius that you want, you should seriously consider the Fusion Hybrid. It's been turning heads everywhere, and getting some really amazing reviews from everywhere from the WaPo to USA Today to Consumer Reports. Let me know. Seriously.
- Scott Monty
Yes, fire the assholes. FIre! Fire! Heads will roll!
- coldbrew
Scoble: you'd probably call the cops if I TP'd your house. And then you'd lambast Charmin on twitter and FF.
- coldbrew
Robert, you just sparked something in my memory. Dealers are notoriusly horrible because the manufacturers have no say in how they act. I think it's time manufacturers take back their dealers and say "This is how you work, if you don't like it, go away" and be done with it. Dealers are part of what killed it for the auto industry.
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
Toyota should just pull a Verizon and fire you as a customer. I would.
- coldbrew
VanLare: Yes, because if the dealers were better and nicer, suddenly people would have a need to buy more cars...
- coldbrew
coldbrew: I already fired them. I had a Prius on hold (and put down a $500 deposit). If I could return this car I would too. I don't put up with things that leave me stranded. Glad to know you do. Too bad there aren't many customers like you. If there were GM wouldn't be facing bankruptcy.
- Robert Scoble
Michael: my Saturn never failed me and had onstar button so I could have called for service.
- Robert Scoble
And your new Ford will have Vehicle Health Report (for free) through the SYNC system, so you would have been warned ahead of time. Hmm....something to think about. :-)
- Scott Monty
Scott: yeah, it didn't give us any warnings. So, let's talk about that Ford Focus.
- Robert Scoble
Scott: well, I wanted two cars: one big one for the family and then one high mileage one like the Prius for me.
- Robert Scoble
There is something to be said about Ford vehicles. I loved my Ford Ranger, and IMHO it was more fun to drive than my Chevy S-10 is. I've been looking at the Ford F150 trucks and am impressed with them. I was looking at the Toyota Tacoma truck too, but something irks me about it. This conversation is making me lean towards Ford, especially since they haven't taken any bailout money, that's a + right there.
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
The Ford Fusion hybrid gets 41 mpg, which isn't too shabby. Certainly the Focus does well too. And if you can wait for the Fiesta, it's going to be up there too. It's already getting rave reviews: http://jalopnik.com/5195986...
- Scott Monty
Scott, not sure if Robert would take it, but you guys should offer him a free lease while his Toyota gets fixed. I bet you 1) he'll turn you down because he doesn't usually take offers, but 2) he'll sure talk about how well you've treated him. Just my $.02...
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: no need to do that. I'm sure the Toyota will be fixed tomorrow. I bet it just needs something stupid like a new battery or something and a computer reboot. I just wish I knew how to reboot my car. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
BTW, as I mentioned, raving Ford fan here - the only problem I've ever had has been with a single dealership's service department (West Valley City, UT - will never take it back to that place). That was with 15 years of Fords.
- Jesse Stay
I've owned a range of Toyotas, new and used, and as a car I swear by them for reliability. But a couple of things Robert: 1: did it not come with emergency call out? maybe a cultural thing, but new cars here are nearly always sold with 24/7 emergency roadside assistance for 1-3 years 2: it's not unreasonable that the yard's repair shop was closed on a Sunday 3: you picked to buy a US manufactured Toyota. That's like buying a Proton (made in Malaysia) and pretending it's a Lotus (who designed it)
- Duncan Riley
Now a good company would seize this opportunity to make you the hero and win you over. Let's see if they can pull this off. Very few have ever with me, but the one's that did have my loyalty to this day.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
You've got a family. Call AAA tomorrow. Cars just seem to know when the dealers are closed.
- Chris Baskind
To those who worry about social media influence over brands, the best way to look at it is this - if someone who didn't have FriendFeed bought a new expensive car and it failed on a Sunday, is this a failure of the car company? In my view it is - just the same as a FeedBurner failure is a failure whether it's John Doe or Louis Gray who is experiencing it. If a failure causes you to mention the problem to just a single person, the brand has a negative perception to overcome.
- John E. Bredehoft
Robert - Had a DODGE (new) that was dead 24 hours off the lot (when they were part of Daimler). They towed it 35 miles (flatbed) ... replaced a whole bunch of stuff (problem couldn't be diagnosed) and has been fine since. On the other hand, newer Nissan is a great car but the dealer really blows. I also use AAA. While you shouldn't need it, it's everywhere and just works (and DOES pay for itself).
- Charlie Anzman
Two words: Vol vo. ;-) It's like a Porsche but with more leg room and a larger trunk. ;-) ;-) They're also built like tanks and last forever.
- Joanmarie
Joanmarie: that's what lots of people said about my Toyota. Confidence is shaken. I've known people who've had troubles with Volvos. Everything can break, so I'm not being fair to Toyota (my family has owned tons of them without a problem).
- Robert Scoble
I'm pretty certain I once used the roadside service that came with my used RAV4 to get a jump-start one morning. Of course, that was a long time ago. I get roadside from my mobile provider these days, but I didn't, then.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Scoble, I respect your right to be angry. But I still think a chill pill is in order. Ask them to replace the vehicle; if they refuse, then get angry. You buy made in the US, you role the dice. If you'd purchased a vehicle made in Japan...well, we wouldn't be having this thread :-)
- Duncan Riley
Duncan: I wasn't mad about the vehicle breaking. Everything breaks. It was the service that happened AFTER the breakdown that really pissed me off.
- Robert Scoble
Acura has standard 24-hr Roadside Assistance; ph# on car sticker, in manual & on all web sites. Honda reimburses under Warranty or comes with that service on Cert. Used. Dealers for all brands vary for service hours, esp. geographically but most open 7 days -- highest performers generally are.
- Ann Palmer
Robert: If nothing else, at least you got someone from Acura to join FriendFeed. Welcome, Ann :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
Exactly my feelings with Apple. My Superdrive failed a few months after purchasing my MBP. No big deal, almost all my Mac-using friends have had their Superdrives die on them - but since it was still under warranty, I thought I'd try to get a repair. I was told this would involve leaving my laptop - my main work machine, which I need every day - with them for seven to ten days. No express option, no on-site option: be computer-less for a week or more, or put up with a duff drive. Epic fail.
- James
*fistbumps Susan* Although I have to say the service I get from Land Rover is actually a little better. Probably because they have had exponentially more opportunity....
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I had to get rid of my 2006 Prius because I was having so much trouble with the 12v starter battery (not the hybrid battery). I went through two of them before I finally gave up on it. It started when I was away for 2 weeks and came back to find it dead. Once that happens, the battery is ruined and will fail to hold a charge. It got progressively worse, until I had to jump start it any time I left it sit for even one day. It was the first car I had to buy a portable jump starter for.
- Mike Hussein Cohen
My father despite my advice bought a Lexus hybrid and sent it back as not fit for purpose. As Mike says above the puny starter battery died after days (not weeks). Three batteries later and advice from Lexus to jury-rig a battery pack in the boot (contrary to their own safety guidelines) the car went back and he bought a Land Rover Discovery. Forget Toyota and forget hybrids for the moment.
- John Samuelson
Robert, when the car is totally locked up like that with a dead battery, you can still unlock it with the physical key hidden in the keyfob. I've had plenty of experience doing that :)
- Mike Hussein Cohen
This is my new favorite FF thread! One thing I'm curious about... An A-lister is slamming Toyota. Okay. And he's getting slammed (by some -- and praised by others) for doing so... I want an easy-to-digest graphic shot of the voices...
- Edward Zwart
Another thing I'd like... some kind of way to rate the level of emotion in a voice (whether in print or spoken). Watching Jenny McCarthy on Larry King the other day brought this sort of issue to my attention. Her "doctors" sounded nothing like the other side's doctors. The other side's doctors sounded like, well, DOCTORS! Hers like emotional parents. Emotion affects authority, doesn't it?
- Edward Zwart
this is the worst method of telling a story I've ever seen. Total FF abuse; really this should be a full blown blog entry
- Bill Rawlinson
Bill: But Robert was telling the story and responding to feedback in real time. Sure, I'd like to see it all told as a cohesive story, including follow-up that explains the battery was defective and whether or not he eventually found a roadside service card stashed in his paperwork. I don't think having the conversation in real time and telling the story after the fact are mutually exclusive, are they? There's always the "hide" button, btw.
- Ken Sheppardson
Absolutely Ken. Bill, were you even serious? Abuse???
- Edward Zwart
I didn't mean abuse as in misuse of the system, more like what seemed like the wrong tool for the job. I wasn't aware that this was built in real time as he experienced the problem. I do not think the two are mutually exclusive and if the blog entry exists I'd still like to read it. I just didn't discover this post until Ed commented as number 250 or so.. At that point it becomes difficult to extract Robert's story from the noise of those commenting to him.
- Bill Rawlinson
funny graf from dilbert blog around the time this happened: http://dilbert.com/blog... Sorry this happened Robert. Our youngest is almost 1 so I can empathize with what happened.
- Todd Zaba
There are already tons of people working on behalf of their companies here. I think the tipping point for me will be when I see Jon Stewart mocking the talking heads about being in a "kerfuffle" over FriendFeed.
- Mitch
Personally, I like it more when experts of a given subject gather around that subject. Be it the LOLCAT talk way :)
- directeur
The tipping point for FF is when CNN and other media outlets use the FF service to expand their own reach; through self-interest they will use FF.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
We (pitchengine) have been enabling brands to engage on Twitter in a more conversational manner. We're considering ways to integrate FF, but quite honestly, it takes a different level of sm understanding and I don't think marketers are there yet.
- Jason Kintzler
What??? You mean Robert Scoble doesn't count as a celebrity????
- Her Lindsay-ness
When I overhear the local weather person directing me to his/her FF page like I've heard with Twitter and Facebook recently.
- Tony, Paradox of FF
Balderdash! Did Google get there via celebrities? Or AOL? Or Facebook? Or WordPress? Or any number of other sites. Just because Twitter brought celebrities to the forefront doesn't mean that every new site must have celebrities to reach critical mass.
- AJ Kohn
The other thing FriendFeed needs is better mobile support - SMS at the very least. Celebrities understand that. I'm not saying I want it, but for them to hit that point, that's what they need.
- Jesse Stay
Lindsay: I am only a celebrity with 18 geeks.
- Robert Scoble
Alex, I hope the new UI is as good as the expectations.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
FF definitely isn't as user friendly when compared to twitter. It doesn't have the same "mainstream" appeal, more of a niche appeal.
- David Spinks
What do you mean David that FF isn't user friendly. Is it easier to just shout into the wild (twitter) or have a conversation requiring listening (reading) what others have to say? Or did you mean something else?
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Adding facebook status updates and replys may push them over the edge.
- Brian Kenyon
I'm not a celebrity. No one is sending me free tequila for a PR stunt.
- Alex Scoble
I can imagine certain celebrities kicking it here. Like Jimmy Fallon.
- Rodfather
So what is the purpose of saying this here, Jeremiah?
- Louis Gray
Celebrities? Not sure. At some point even celebrities are going to say ugh I have to have another profile. Utility, discussion and a little fun will push friend feed toward greater adoption. Rapidly liking friend feed more than fb and twitter but that is because it is because it compliments both vs replacing them.
- Patrick Boegel
- 1 because, editing is funky on iPhone friend feed
- Patrick Boegel
Wil Wheaton (aka weasley crusher) is on here :)
- Roberto Bonini
Wil Wheaton's Twitter and Flickr are imported here, but he has no comments or Likes. I don't think you can really call that "on here."
- Ken Sheppardson
Maybe I don't want FriendFeed to have a tipping point then. I don't know what celebrities would add to the conversation. I'd rather have all "experts on the sidelines" here, and even better, experts NOT on the sidelines but actually up high in business and government. John McCain, hold your next "town hall meetings" here!
- Meryn Stol
Not that Mccain would. He doesn't understand the internet. But I sure would like to see representation from political parties here.
- Meryn Stol
How significant will text messaging be? Twitter has the 140-character limit because of that, FriendFeed doesn't. Though I hear too many complaints from Twitter users, saying that the FriendFeed interface just isn't as friendly - maybe this will change tomorrow.
- Colin Charles
from twhirl
My theory on this: Most celeb's have been texting for years. They've mastered the160 char format and Twitter is a natural fit for them. FF feels more like a discussion forum and most celeb's aren't used to that format.
- Mike Doeff
"celebrities" are not a monolithic group. It will click for some based in part on their personality and part on the fluidity with which they find it a useful curatorial and communications venue. My judgment will be based on creativity, level of interesting info contributed, and authenticity of conversations with whomever comes. I won't hold their celebrity-ness against them, and it's no free pass either.
- Micah Wittman
Well one measure of "success" for friendfeed is that spamming has started.
- Alex Scoble
CNN should have thier own room.. for each of their shows..
- CW™
FF Success will be like Twitter, when marketers subscribe to you and tell you how to make money on FF...
- CW™
First, FF needs to change their recommend list. New members only see tech people.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
LPH: I have an account with only Iranians on it. Friendfeed does not recommend tech people there. The recommended list is based on who you follow and who they follow.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, has this changed recently? I recall signing up and only tech people being available on the recommend list. As time went, and I subscribed to different people, then the tech people recommendations decreased.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
Robert, you *what*? You've just been added to a few anti-terror watchlists I think. ;) I bet you gonna tell me next that you can actually read and write Iranian. That would make you really suspect! ;)
- Meryn Stol
when the best of the day post ends up being this one, you know where FriendFeed stands in terms of "mainstream." Best of the day usually is a post about FriendFeed, Twitter, or something other social network anyway...
- Vincent van Wylick
I felt the same thing about Twitter a year ago.
- Jamie
yea I thought the same thing....the trick is making it so twitter can still be popular. Friendfeed will just be the method that I use to access Twitter. Friendfeed needs to be able to post/get info from all of my networks seemlessly, that way I don't have to ever go on Twitter.com
- Jason Stephens
Why do we want Twitter and FF to be popular? I'd rather they stay a bit underground. Celebrity on the Internet doesn't mean the same thing to me. I get a lot more useful info out of non-celebrities.
- Dave Sanders
coming soon; demi uses FF to rescue timmy from well. too bad lassie can't tweet
- Todd Randolph
""Hunker down, trim to extend your runway, and build value." Yeah, I bet that took him years to figure out... similar to "my hand hurts when I grab this hot pan. So I stopped grabbing the hot pan.""
- Dave Sanders
"Just sad that MSN doesn't "officially" support most modern browsers. I was on Vista with IE 8 (in IE7 mode) for chrissakes and still got the you aren't compatible error. WTF?)"
- Dave Sanders
"I would have paid $100 for the CNN Anchor to have filled in the blank for him: "you mean Sarah Palin and her church of anti-semetic voodoo worshippers?""
- Dave Sanders
How do we all feel about this? Personally, I would put ads in my tweets, and I wouldn't object to others doing the same. Ads are all the same to me, they get ignored.
- Will Higgins™
hmm, i dunno - tweets are so short that i probably would unfollow anyone who added them to their tweets. But on a twitter background, even though i wouldnt do it - i wouldn't blame people who did.
- Zee.
The problem with this is that you probably won't be able to tell the difference between an ad and, let's say, a site that the "twitterer" is actually recommending. Unless the user is providing amazing content, I'd probably unfollow.
- Antonio Marques
from twhirl
I'm yet to see this in action - is there a Magpie disclaimer in the tweet at all? if it's at all detectable, it's an automatic unfollow as far as I'm concerned
- David Miller
is this, firstly, in concordance with the twitter tos? i find it hard to believe.
- Tibi Puiu
I am going to try it. Says I can make $98.41!
- Stowe Boyd
Something is wrong, it says I can make $7,703!
- Eric Sessions
I tried Twittads, not Magpie. Magpis says I could make 286.11 €/month
- Stowe Boyd
What a weird service. It says I can make 5.08€/month.
- Anika
Oh boy, I could make 3 bucks a month. :/ Not worth it in my opinion. Interesting concept though.
- Geoff Girardin
"Garrison shows exactly where he stands (not that that was a mystery.) And I agree with his last statement - maybe if the people "in power" actually lost something once in a while they'd be a little more humble and helpful."
- Dave Sanders
