8 Valuable Lessons Newspapers Must Learn From Bloggers to Survive - http://writetodone.com/2009...
Newspapers are trying to find a model for making money online, but they’re not learning fast enough, not adapting fast enough. Online ads can’t support them, because now the monopoly for publishing news and commentary has been broken, and advertising has been spread out among thousands and thousands of sites. How can the newspaper industry adapt? Well, they’ll either have to figure that out quickly, or they’ll die. - George Kelly
Guy Kawasaki
Turned on JS-Kit "Echo" and holy kaw, comment count exploded. Eg, http://adjix.com/i4tb Much more action because of JS-Kit/Echo
Wait until you see what it does totime spent on page! - Robert Scoble from iPhone
What is JS-Kit/Echo? Real-time commenting for blogs? - Sam Guzman
Would be nice if they could filter out all those retweets; seems like every comment from Twitter is just a "hey check this out", not really contributing to discussion. - Raj Advani
Sam go watch the video about it at http://www.building43.com yes it replaces your comments with new realtime and more. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
My blog is next. If it works well (I'm pretty happy with Disqus) I'm considering using js-kit for a redesigned site for the radio show. - Leo Laporte
Leo we learned a lot from the TC test - we have all sorts of tweaks coming. That's our intention to polish and polish so that it shines :) - Chris Saad
Chris, where do you communicatie on these tweaks, on your blog? - Jeroen De Miranda
Do you think the comment count is higher because Echo is making it easy to view/count a consolidated view of comments/retweets that would have been submitted on various sites anyway? Or, what aspect of the platform resulted in comments that otherwise would not have been submitted? - Mark McCrery
what about just using discus? better? worse? same same? - Jeffrey T. Sooey
Well - maybe "the explosion" was not exactly due to turning the feature on - but maybe because your blog was listed in the PR for the announcement. - LPH™ and his dog P™
thanx for the answers @khrisloux & @GuysReplies. For @khrisloux question; A simple filter function to filter out posts with terms/words would pretty much do it i believe. What do you reckon? ... Well, it seem like more than 90% of all the comments on your post are retweets or Fwd's of your same blogpost :) This seem to be a pretty relevant issue. How do you get around that? Are the any filtering system to filter all RT's and Fwd's out? - Jan Friman from iPhone
this is awesome... can't wait to get it installed and mess around with it! - Jeffrey T. Sooey

Let me tell you about how I love Amazon. I placed my order with Amazon Fresh for groceries last night at about 9:45PM. I woke up at 5:00AM to find all of my groceries on my porch. Awesome.
photoaz.jpg
When we lived in St. Paul, we occasionally used Simon Delivers and loved it, especially in the winter. - Heather Solos
Sounds good. Do they ask you to return the plastic shipping containers, out of interest? Or do you get to keep them for storing other stuff? - Tyson Key
Do you return the plastic crates or get to keep them? - pea
Tyson and pea, you have a choice of either having them come back within 48 hours to pick them up, or you keeping them until your next order (and doing whatever you want with them in the meantime) at which time they swap them out with your new items. I have them come pick them up since we don't have much storage space or use for them. - Rochelle
awesome service..... - Akash Sharma
Nice...do you live out in the boondocks or in the 'burbs? - Joel Robert Perez
Joel, about 10 minutes from downtown Seattle proper, so not quite suburbs but certainly not right downtown. Amazon Fresh does deliver to the suburbs, though. - Rochelle
Nice, thank you Rochelle. Something to think about...should have thought about it more when Celeste was born. That would have stopped all of the "going to WalMart in 3 in the morning" trips for food and other things. - Joel Robert Perez
There are also other two major grocery stores (Albertsons and Safeway) that deliver here, plus a few smaller organic grocery services. It keeps good competition between the services which means lots of discounts and promos for customers! - Rochelle
Booo! That's only available in Seattle. :P - Tad
Move to Seattle! :) Not only do they bring groceries, but they also bring anything Amazon.com has. My friend ordered some fruit and a Drobo. :) - Rochelle
Amazing. - Kandeezie
wow! - Joe
They do rock - Sean Oliver
That's awesome! - AJ Batac
Wish they covered Austin. Signed up to be informed when they do reach here. - Patrick Jordan
nice! - TheHenry
OMG Amazon food this is going to be HUGE - Thomas Power
I wish that was available here. We really liked webvan when they were around. - Jeremy Brooks
Need to check for that around where I am. - Amani
Since I live in a town that takes 15 minutes to drive from one end to the other of, with all lights against you, I am asking this out of sheer curiosity: What does ordering groceries from the internet accomplish? Would it take too long to get to your local food store otherwise? - Miss Elle
Elle, with an infant, it's a whole lot easier for me to order online than take her to the store. It also saves on my expenses for car fuel and use. Many friends of mine who don't have cars order groceries online because it's easier than hauling groceries on the back of a bicycle. There are a lot of people here in Seattle who don't have cars. - Rochelle
Miss Elle, I live in a city and don't have a car so online grocery ordering helps when I have to shop in bulk and can't carry heavy items. Although I'm a picky shopper and like to browse. One time I accidently ordered 4 pounds of garlic instead if 4 bulbs. It was a lot of garlic. - Jason from iPhone
Ah thanks guys. I hadn't thought about the whole infant angle (I can sooooo see that one, what a relief it must be) and the no cars angle. I guess I'm spoiled that I can walk to the market and do my shopping daily and it all fits in one reusable tote. On the other hand, you big city folks can actually find things to do after 6 pm. - Miss Elle
Is this just the case in Seattle? Anyone in SF getting quick deliveries like this? - Berk D. Demir
I wish I lived in a country where stuff on your porch stayed there... - Marlin Forbes
Oh man. Yet another reason Seattle will remain at the top of my "if I had a choice about where to live" list. Grocery delivery sounds like a dream compared to having to drive 90 miles to get decent groceries like we do now. - Renee from iPhone

New York Times official FriendFeed account is here: http://friendfeed.com/nytimes. Already subscribed :)
Posts by a bot? or simply a deluge of RSS items? :) - directeur
I'd pay 0.1$ a year to make them use the bookmarklet :) - Jérôme Flipo
This is one of those cases where I'm glad they are on FF but I'm also not going to subscribe directly. If someone I follow [Like]s their posts, fine. I'll read it then. This goes for pretty much any large team-run content publisher. - Daniel J. Pritchett
just a twitter feed. - CW™
Not so fast, Clay. They also Dugg themselves on page 2! - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Nice addition but nothing extraordinary. - ashish
it's a good start, many users have began friendfeeding with only rss import, and gradually acquired the skills for deeper involvement - Mike Chelen
Because we need another channel of Twitter-length summaries of the NYT like I don't know what. - ianf ⌘
what Daniel and ianf said. - Anthony Citrano from BuddyFeed
Not a bad development. I can import this stuff as an Imaginary Friend but any comment I make on it would only be seen by me. Some dump feeds are good for starting conversations, and sometimes it's nice to have an 'Official' feed. For me, Andy Ihnatko http://friendfeed.com/ihnatko is a great person to follow, but he never comments here. I prefer to see all his stuff (flickr etc) rather than having to hunt around. Each to their own... - Johnny Worthington
Whilst I agree that this is yet another bot importing into an FF feed, at least they have a presence now and only we can bring them into the realisation that having an interactive presence would be a good thing. +1 Mike. - Travis Koger
+1 Attaboy Travis for "whilst." - ianf ⌘
Thanks ianf, however I will be wondering for the entire day if you were being sarcastic now. ;) - Travis Koger

Google Reader's shared item feeds now has a real URL. Here's mine: http://www.google.com/reader... -- more RSS ahead!
How to get it ? - Jigar Mehta
Ok, I got it.. http://www.google.com/reader... is the page where you set the URL. Late but nice feature! - Jigar Mehta
This new features is cool, but do you guys no what is now the difference betweet "share" and "like" on google reader ? - Nicolas Gosset
I tried to replace my reader link in FF and found that FF is parsing for the old link format (http://www.google.com/reader...<user number>). - Tom Horn
Trying 2 find my URL...BRB... - CarolAnnB
http://www.google.com/reader... - CarolAnnB now on Google Reader - CarolAnnB
This is not a new feature. Its been there all along. I chose my name long long ago..You might want to check on your sources.. - Rohit
Rohit - Are you referring to Google Profile url's? This is new for Google Reader. - Kevin Whalen from email
Well sure, but this plus likes, following, etc is new for Google Reader. - Kevin Whalen from email
What about Google ads on this page? - Kris
Greader needs the realtime more than the real URL - Roberto from fftogo
no Kevin. I know the difference between my profile address and the shared reader page address. - Rohit
My shared items URL: http://www.google.com/reader... - take a look. - Liza
Robert - deja vu, but I thought this was available a month or so ago??? Here's mine: http://www.google.com/reader... - NOW, can we pls discuss Google's unfriendly Friend Connect. It is a bear to install, except on Blogger, as you have mentioned in the past. - Liza
scherbi's shared items: http://www.google.com/reader... - Bill Scherer
Mines just engadget mainly... I wont share... - Chris Lloyd
Hoping to get mored shared items. http://www.google.com/reader... - Amir
Isn't anyone else concerned that this gives away your gmail account address? That is, if your custom reader url is http://www.google.com/reader..., then your gmail address is necessarily someperson@gmail.com. That's why I didn't enable this in Google Profile before. Even though Google's spam filter if super, I'm not wanting to attract more spam. Am I being overly cautious here? - Chris Spizzirri
Naw, I am a complete whore, @cspizz - Chris Abraham
Wish it was shorter. Here's mine, though: http://www.google.com/reader... - Aaman (Clone of FF)

So, someone posted a picture of a naked man here on FriendFeed and now everyone is in an uproar. Let me introduce you to two very important features: "block" and "hide."
Geesh. If something offends you, hide and then block. It works great to keep your view clean. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I agree. Also people need to get over it. - Oracio
You should be able to turn off images from FoaF. I have no idea who victor gnaata is or why he would post a picture of a chopped off dick, but I didn't ask to see it, and I had to see it, before I could block it. - Richard Lawler
As usual. It's not the naked man pic that matters, but the fact that someone dared to post it. - andrei_c
Richard: I agree, it would be great to have a "not safe for work" feature. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
A lot of people here don't believe in using the block feature, which is something I fail to understand (why someone wouldn't use it) - Jannifer @wordsforliving
If we can turn off comments we should be able to tell everyone else that some item contains objectionable content. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Jannnifer I block early and often. It keeps me sane. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I think the point that's eventually going to be made is that it's considered polite to not put NSFW material in their main feed but to place it in the appropriate room. - CAJ, somewhere else
this is why i mostly use lists at work. no FOAF with nudes. - Bill Kinney
LOL! Where is the pic of the naked man? (no homo...lol) - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
This is my living room. If someone walked naked into my house I would kick them out. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Rah: I hid it so don't know the URL anymore. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Robert, he doesn't deserve to be blocked, posterous imported it for him. And "hide' is the reason this spread. - Jimminy Fuller
I dunno, Robert. Depends on who it is. I agree that all these moderation features should take into account stuff like this. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Personally, I have never found a need to block anything/anyone. That doesn't mean I don't think it shouldn't be there - Ian May
Guys, I'm sorry, but my body is a beautiful thing - Mike Nayyar
James: I just hid it. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Mike: I am sure it is, but you won't come over my house naked. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Robert what if someone posts a nude pic of you. Wouldn't you ask FriendFeed to delete that content? In which case you're actually asking to apply an "implicit rule"? And yes, I know about hiding and blocking :) - directeur
Rah, here is a link to the profile with the offending picture it's about 4 posts down. http://friendfeed.com/imjr - Jimminy Fuller
I love watching self-governance in action. More government. Less government. Discuss. - Martha
Directeur: there are several pictures of me naked on the Internet but you have to look for them. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
If someone wants to post pictures of me naked that I took or consented to I won't ask to pull those down - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Martha: exactly. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Robert, Sure! but otherwise, you'd ask, and it would be your *right* and when we're talking about rights, we implicitely talk about "rules" - directeur
There needs to be a work safe mode, hide and block are good, but they are both available after the fact - Kim Landwehr
Directeur: it depends on whether I had an expectation of privacy. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Robert, I wish I'd learned to block early and fast - it would have saved me a lot of grief here on friendfeed, as a few people ruined my experience here and I'm still slowly recovering. *Sigh* - Jannifer @wordsforliving
I keep the live feed rolling throughout the day at work and it would be killer if something like that came up on my screen. Bad etiquette! - Brian Bufalo
What? Naked pictures on the Web? I'm shocked. - Patrick Giblin
So I went looking for interesting naked men and all I found was a still from a film. old news, watched, it, nothing to comment on. I'm guessing the majority of the people in an uproar are US based? - Rachel Clarke
I missed the naked man pic. There was one person who posted a bunch of barely clothed ladies. I got bored with seeing all the pics of ladies and since I thought he was still a good guy, I just hid his FF posts. I do however block mean-spirited people. - Jannifer @wordsforliving
Stuff like this is the reason I can't use regular FF at work... - Tad from fftogo
You all need a compulsory internet filter like the one we are getting in Australia. That would protect your delicate sensibilities! LOL. - Matt G
I think it's impolite to post NSFW images on the main feed. It's always work hours somewhere in the world too. Actually a couple of times I was so shocked at what I saw that I froze and didn't hide it fast enough :( - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕ from fftogo
Where is the uproar? No one really complained in the thread itself - Matthew DeVries
Why does everyone have to continue on with this? It was a bloody Mistake. I'm human. - Matt Ruiz
Matt - why would you complain in the thread of a picture you don't want to see, thereby sharing it with everyone who subscribes to you? - Richard Lawler
Richard, are you serious? o.O - Matthew DeVries
Matt your post was just fuel to a slow burning fire that was surrounded by a forest of dry timber. If it wasn't your post it would of been someone elses. - CW™
What don't you get Matthew? Why would you share something NSFW with the people who subscribe to you, unless you're the kind of person who shares that stuff on friendfeed. - Richard Lawler
Why would you complain anywhere else but the place where problem is? - Matthew DeVries
Must say, this is my all time favorite drama Ff. ZOMG PENIS - Matthew DeVries
Matthew - which part don't you get? Commenting on the post reshares it to everyone who follows you. Do you not understand how friendfeed works? If you don't want to share the post, you can't comment on it. It's very simple. - Richard Lawler
Do you not understand how humans addressing problems works? Starting third hand bitch threads is not the way you deal with things. You go to the source. - Matthew DeVries
You're either unable or unwilling to accept that someone might not want to reshare a post they themselves don't like, I don't know which it is, but you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. I don't understand how someone could not understand this concept. Do you know what happens when you comment on a thread? - Richard Lawler
You clearly like to spread drama around so it spreads as far as possible. Every single one of these Penis posts should have been in the penis thread. Not all over the feed. That is main feed litter, not penises. - Matthew DeVries
Matthew - you're an idiot. - Richard Lawler
No, no I'm not. I'd rather see a bumped single thread with a penis in it, than 200 threads complaining about penises. - Matthew DeVries
Whatever you want to call it, you're being willfully ignorant of what I'm saying. Your ignorance of how friendfeed works and why people use it the way they do isn't my problem. - Richard Lawler
Interesting that naked photos of women don't elicit the same response. - anna sauce
Richard, I wouldn't mind if someone shared a photo of a dick (not that i'd enjoy it, I wouldn't) on friendfeed, it's just the fact that I never intended for this to happen. Posterous had Auto posted it, to both Twitter and FriendFeed, so either way it was bound to show up. Why it showed up was an accident. I only meant it to be viewed on Posterous not on Twitter, nor FriendFeed. - Matt Ruiz
You're the one doing exactly what you say I am. http://friendfeed.com/search... That is what I get to see today. Instead of all of you taking your penis issues to the penis thread, which I could have hidden and never seen again, I have to see http://friendfeed.com/search... THAT is what people should be cognizant of. Not that they're bumping a penis to their followers. - Matthew DeVries
Matt - I'm not addressing why or how it popped up, I didn't see it in my feed because I don't know you, until you subbed me just now and it showed up in my email (thanks for that btw, I love that movie.) I'm just talking about why the way friendfeed works isn't helpful for this kind of thing. - Richard Lawler
Matthew - what you see when you search for the word penis isn't my problem, and i'm not spreading anything. In case you didn't notice, I didn't start this thread. - Richard Lawler
Yes, but you were the one to jump on me when I tell the people to take their penis talk to the penis posting guy. And for some reason I STILL don't get, the penis posting guy not only posted the penis, but 4 follow up threads about the penis instead of just shutting up and hiding. So I have the penis complaint threads, the penis thread, the penis thread guy posting about his penis... more... - Matthew DeVries
I'm kind of trying to follow the thread here but lost it. Perhaps the problem is Scoble posting about it? 45K fans can't be wrong. - anna sauce
So, do you understand why someone would not want to comment on the original thread or not? It's a real simple question you've been unable to answer so far. You've got plenty of time, clearly. If you don't like all the penis threads you're seeing, you probably sub to the wrong people, I only see this one. - Richard Lawler
*eyeroll* you win *tips king* The internet is yours........ Be careful, it kind of pulls to the left on rainy mornings. - Matthew DeVries
It's easy to make the mistake of not realizing or forgetting that something will automatically pop up over here. It's happened to me before (not w/ pics, but Disqus comments - nothing bad, just didn't make sense once over here). There are so many services that can be imported over to FF that one could quite easily forget about something unless you review it and keep it fresh in your mind. - Jannifer @wordsforliving
What -- There's nudity on the Interwebs? When did this start? - Chris Baskind
DeVries: you are wrong. I would NEVER engage on objectionable content because that spreads the objectionable content. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I noticed. and noticed. and noticed. and noticed. A lot of people seem to think that's the right way of addressing problems. Seems Three's Company was a big influence on people. - Matthew DeVries
Well, thanks for sharing! Is there a problem with people getting into an uproar? Someone obviously was lacking attention. They gave 'em what they wanted? Why are you in an uproar that people are in an uproar??? Just curious. :) - Givememychocolatedotorg
I'm still in shock to find that they had male full frontal nudity in a movie! It's about time. I totally believe NSFW content should not be posted on the main feed. We do have to accept that occasionally something will slip through. A lot of companies are blocking social networking sites. Right or wrong, they do want you to do your job. If it's is such a risk for you, possible you shouldn't be on ff at work anyway. Just sayin' - BEX
With Scoble on FriendFeed we have to see lots of pics of naked men - it's nothing new. :-) - Jesse Stay
more words of genius from the fingers of Robert Scoble - Andrew Euell
The problem seems to be cleared up now, the original poster is now aware of the issue that caused the unwanted action, the "block" and "hide" features have been explained and now.... everyone's bitching that everyone else is bitching? lol I find this really entertaining. I've been hiding each and every single "beautiful women" group posts because I'm getting annoyed by the number of... more... - Heather
And a flacid penis at that. - Matthew DeVries
Here in the United Arab Emirates, our ISP tends to block any site that does not have a policy for filtering mature images. Flickr is still blocked - regardless of their present policy. Since I don't want to lose access to this site, I would rather if FF had a policy for this kind of thing. - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Dear Scoble et al: I don't care who posted a penis on FF (Matt, seriously, I never meant for you to catch flack about this. It happens, and I hope I've clarified that my ire isn't directed to you *at all*.) My frustration is two fold 1) Gents who don't raise an eyebrow at naked women on the main feed who act as if a penis is the worst thing they've ever seen when one happens to float... more... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
What are you so afraid of that you need to be so quick on the block and hide buttons?! - Prokofy Neva
Prokofy: I wouldn't allow a naked guy to come into my place of work or my living room, so I will block same from here. - Robert Scoble
Scoble, the naked man has to enter the room before you can block him :( - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
I hope FF administration sees things this way, hide and block is actually a very simple solution and a truly excellent one. This is sort of how censorship got out of hand at Flickr though. Started with stuff like this and then the next thing you know they had a whole group dedicated to stamping out anything potentially offensive on the site ending up deleting entire accounts and thousands of photos willy nilly because they had a bad hair day instead. It's easy for people to overreact to stuff like this. - Thomas Hawk

"Fluid Voice is described in a white paper as "a proximity based mobile group communication system for opportunistic social exchanges." This makes one think of a mobile app for picking up members of the opposite sex. But being an academic project, I'm sure that's not the point of it. So what is it? Lippman described Fluid Voice to me as a new type of messaging system that engages a group. He said that it's like a telephone system that defaults to a conference call all of the time, which he termed "push to listen." It has similarities to party-line telephone systems, instant messaging chat rooms and conferencing bridges for business people." - LANjackal from Bookmarklet

Hells yeah...gotta do something with all the swag. - Neal Jansons
no stickers on mine. I like the clean look. - John Wang
I used to have it "clean" as well. Then I switched jobs. So never having to give the laptop "back" to anyone meant I could do whatever I wanted. - Louis Gray
you put cn next to seesmic? i thought we were friends - Allen Stern
Cry me a river, Allen. Yours is the first to come off. :) (Besides the shape of the CN and the Lijit and Seesmic logos just flow) - Louis Gray
No stickers in my lt, only apple will shine in it<3 - Nia from fftogo
ROFL@Allen. BTW, Allen, you should send me CN swag :) - Neal Jansons from IM
I don't, but my job buys my computer. Technically, it's there's. - Derrick
The correct answer is both . It's a computer, not a skateboard. Anyone who has to express their individuality by advertising their favorite online"hangs" is likely devoid of any more meaningful expression. Or, more simply, stickers suck. - Ciaoenrico
I'd put my site logo onto a netbook, but I prefer the clean look of my laptop. - Steve Farnworth
BTW - The TiVo guy is really for glass windows, so he had some assistance with double stick tape which is visible on his right leg. - Louis Gray
same opinion regarding bumpers stickers on cars - not cool - Mike Bracco
There's a group for this http://friendfeed.com/laptops... - Jorge Escobar
Stickers suck? Do you hate balloons and glitter, too, you heartless fiend? Screw that...I am off to plaster my lappie with Hello Kitty. - Neal Jansons from IM
Sorry if that's harsh, but I see that in meetings and wonder, "am I supposed to take this person seriously?" - Ciaoenrico
I never mess with the exterior of my computers, but my virtual desktops are typically quite the mess (or so folks tell me--they seem perfectly logically arranged to me). - Kathy Fitch
I love stickers. But laser engraving beats it hands down: http://www.mobypicture.com/user... @marlooz was given a new MBP after hers was stolen at the 140char conference. The names of the people who donated are on it. Forever. - Ruud van Wijngaarden
I do not own a personal laptop, and I'm not sure if my employer would look kindly on a FriendFeed sticker on my work laptop. - John E. Bredehoft
Love the Building43 one! I have stickers all over my laptop. - Robert Scoble
Neal Jansons LOL - Hello Kitty would rock! But Friendfeed and Twitter? Why not Dupont and Allied Waste while we're at it. - Ciaoenrico
Ciaoenrico, my "meeting" Dell laptop is blank. But this "stickered" laptop is great for social media and blogger meetups. - Louis Gray
I don't have any stickers because I do not want to disappoint those whose sticker I could not put on. - ashish
Well, I don't have FF and Twitter...I have event stickers, a WP sticker because I am into Wordpress, Social Media Club, Digg, Laughingsquid, and Rev3 to support people I know/knew over there, and so on. Mostly I put them on to plug people, projects, and companies I like, same reason I wear band t-shirts and so on. - Neal Jansons from IM
Louis Gray For what it's worth, my vision may be clouded as a co-worker of mine did this with his machine, and he happened to be a complete tool. :) - Ciaoenrico
I have Eli Manning Giants mini FatHeads on mine. - Jim Graham
neal - you can have a cn sticker - i have a ton of them - just dm or email me your addy (anyone else too) - trust me louis is nothing special, everyone can have a cn sticker (lets not tell louis tho he likes to think he is special) HAHAHA - Allen Stern
Yes stickers! - Elliott Ng
Absolutely not! No stickers on my laptop, no stickers on my car, no tattoo on my body. I accept brands only on my dresses - Roberto from fftogo

Ciaoenrico, I have found that whether or not your coworkers are complete tools is typically independent of their laptop sticker choices. - Louis Gray
i have stickers from bands and musical instrument makers on my lappie. - Joe Silence is ashes
Louis Gray Fair enough. But I don't think it's the choice in stickers, it's the need to show off what you're into. Whether it's my cup of tea or not, it certainly is fanboyish, isn't it? - Ciaoenrico
whatever floats your stoat, eh? - Joe Silence is ashes
I tend to agree with Roberto, except that I do love temporary tattoos. If I could have laptop *clings* (stick, peel, move, and remove at will), then I might think about it. - Kathy Fitch

Marcos: Nice art :) Mine is not as arty but I preferred it to 'plain mac' :) http://www.flickr.com/photos... - 1x29
Kathy: The one I have is removable without major issue - it's a gel skin rather than a traditional sticker. There was a range of them in Fry's Electronics, Phoenix, AZ. Not sure where to get them online, I'm afraid. - 1x29
I created a hashtag to track it easier: #laptopstickermeme is what I tagged my pics with. I customize the hardware I own personally as you can tell. I'm taking the zen approach with my new netbook though. I have a few stickers on my company issue Dell laptop that are easy to remove. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
DORK! :) - sofarsoShawn
So far, I have not done it with any of my computers. My first car (used) and second car (new) were both solely transportation means of getting me to point A to point B, so I did put stickers on them. The car I have now, I enjoy the beauty and style of it as much as its function, so no stickers on it except for some inside window static cling Apple logos. Having said that, I don't have anything against people wanting to make their stuff unique or reflect their personality. - Louis Trapani
I can't seem to hold it up in view of the webcam… - Glen, Bespectacled Elder

I keep a "My Name Is" sticker ony laptop with all my account logins. (Just in case I forget them.) - Mark Davidson from BuddyFeed
My MacBook had stickers - mostly either hangouts I loved back in NC and my "W The Coach" sticker in UNC colors. I saw Rebecca MacKinnon at BlogNashville a few years back and the stickers she had on her iBook and vowed that I would get my own when I could afford a decent laptop. My MacBook lived from the week after the product line lauched until last December, God rest its soul. - Dana Franks

BTW, SocialToo has stickers at http://cafepress.com/socialtoo - those will do until I can get some better stuff together. - Jesse Stay
Stickers on personal lappies rock! On a work laptop, not so much, other than perhaps a sticker of the place you work. But I've got an Apple sticker pacmanning my hp logo, a Bunny sticker (bunny-comic.com), a Bob the Fish sticker (Grand Cayman memories), and a Get Out of Hell Free sticker, just in case... the husband is rockin' an old-school Apple sticker over the Apple logo on his MB, very cool at night with the light shining through. He also pays homage to Bunny and CN (he appreciates you, Allen ;D). - Bette Cooper
I need to pick up some stickers for mine I think, its bare right now. The seesmic one looks cool. - deakaz

How do you sell the laptop on Ebay when you're done with it if it's covered in stickers? - Jesse Stay
jesse you sign it and sell it as a collectors item - maybe it helps sell for more - Allen Stern
Allen not with my signature - I'll get you to sign it when we see each other in the next few weeks. (still working out a date for that) - Jesse Stay
not me either - mine would decrease the value :) - Allen Stern
Allen, maybe a sticker with your autograph on it :-) - Jesse Stay
Jesse! NO brown-nosing! (Louis - I'll take one w/ an autograph!) Jesse - I'll take yours too =) - Arleen Boyd

Where did you get all these stickers from? - Melanie Langenhan
Stickers! http://www.flickr.com/photos... It may be geeky or whatever, but xxxxxxx doesn't sponsor my blogging so no advertising for them. Besides, if ppl think that it does not look "professional" I probably do not want to work with them. Just sayin' - Stephen Smith
I'll only allow certain stickers: http://enjoysthin.gs/stickers - Ted Roden
my laptop & netbook both sport Songbird stickers. I'd do friendfeed stickers for sure if someone offered. - Trent Olson
Once upon a time, I put a Mandrake Linux sticker to cover a windows one on a laptop. Angry of having to buy windows with my PC before having the right to install Linux in it. My children still use this old and broken laptop, and the sticker is still there ;) - Thierry R. Andriamirado
BTW, I'd be happy to put a 'FriendFeed' sticker on my Laptop! For when I have to talk about FF or to arouse questions about it.. "What's FriendFeed?". No FB nor Twitter stickers: everybody know them now. - Thierry R. Andriamirado

Ever hear of augmented reality iPhone apps? You will. Tons of examples are up on Google: http://www.google.com/search...
I really need an Iphone for stuff like this. Sadly I can count on two hands all my close friends I actually have and on one hand the number of people I ever call, so its not worth the cash :( - Mark
Mark: I own an iPhone for the web, not for the phone. - Robert Scoble

In Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson referred to users of pervasive augmented reality as gargoyles. They always had half of their attention focussed on the supplementary details their rig was presenting. - DGentry
If there's anything, near-future, really smack-society-upside-the-head-transformative, it's AR. Probably not getting enough attention/hype. Real AR glasses coming soon: http://www.vuzix.com/iwear... - Christopher A Carr
Yeah, it's what Marketing People Like, haha http://bit.ly/IsgfD - anna sauce
Super nice link Christopher Carr, what is the resolution of The Wrap 920AV? What I really hope is for such AR glasses 1. Not to disturb at all with viewing the world around you, crashing into things all the time because of AR would be a pretty bad thing 2. Needs not to hurt or damage vision in any ways, thus needs to be very much in focus, very visible and not painful to the eye at all. - Charbax
Here's another example, coming out this week. http://ff.im/5gPbU "Near You." - Robert Scoble
Don't diss stuff like this. My non-geeky spouse uses the augmented reality apps to map walking routes for exercise. He NEVER walked before he got an iPhone. NEVER. Between livestrong apps and these, he's lost 40 lbs, on track to be at perfect weight in 20 more. - Karoli
We just had a couple posts on that today at SA. http://siliconangle.com/ver2... and http://siliconangle.com/ver2... - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Here's another app, this time for New York Subway stations: http://friendfeed.com/dbarefo... - Robert Scoble
Apostol: that might be true, but there's something going on here which is very useful. - Robert Scoble
Charbax: RE: Wrap 920AV. They've yet to release all the specs. "Equivalent to a 60” screen viewed from nine feet." Did you see the head-tracking and stereo camera accessories? Being able to stream your POV to someone else wearing the glasses might be very useful. - Christopher A Carr
There's definitely something going on in AR, I'm looking forward to seeing what people do with it in time. Right now a key limitation is GPS accuracy in metropolitan areas: you need consistent <1 meter accuracy to do truly awesome things in AR (i.e. point at an object and get information on it) and we're not really there yet. - Raj Advani
The GPS accuracy limitation is why all the AR apps coming out right now have more to do with navigation (finding a place) than information (getting information about a place in front of you). - Raj Advani
You said you'll be putting a video up of one coming out soon. Where can we see it? - Richard South
Richard: here: http://ff.im/5gPbU -- it's not quite augmented reality because it doesn't put the camera underneath, but it's about the same as the others I've seen so far. - Robert Scoble
Chris Messina

Which person is making biggest contributions to the 2010Web? I'm making a list, see it here:
Here's the list: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub... I need your help in improving it! How did I make this list? I scoured my business cards and my contact list and we brainstormed and came up with this list of 325 people. It's just a starting point. - Robert Scoble
The green lines, by the way, are people who are on friendfeed. That tells me whether they are really exploring the 2010web or not. - Robert Scoble
Got any other people who should be on this list? Let me know here. - Robert Scoble
Over the next few days this list will get dramatically longer and better. - Robert Scoble
*waving* hey Robert. have you met Xiao Fengjin? Founder of Linkool Labs behind the Juice app. http://www.linkool.biz/ and her Twitter http://twitter.com/xiaofengjin -- try not to base opinion to heavily on FriendFeed use. You'll miss out on some cool folks overseas not using it. :) - So Much More Hawaii
Some on this list are journalists/bloggers. Some are very techie/developers. Some are marketers. Some are VCs. Some are entrepreneurs. Some are CEOs. Some are researchers. Some are power users who are pushing the web in interesting ways. I am looking to build a diverse group of people who are pushing the 2010web forward. - Robert Scoble
I don't know exactly who are the folks who are doing it - but the people who are making the great "detect your browser and if a mobile browser, show a well made, fully functional but mobile browser friendly version of the site" (see Gawker's site on an iphone for example) are among those making a big impact on the 2010 web - Shannon Clark
I suspect the people who will are not on the list yet - they are in china, india, or perhaps south africa or denmark and not on the Anglo Saxon radar - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
So Much More Hawaii: I agree. I'm off to look through my Twitter and Facebook lists next. Joelle: that's why I'm asking here, so the list gets better. - Robert Scoble
Good point by Shannon - fixing what's there might be a bigger impact, but it will never be recognised as such. - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
But everyone on this list will eventually be on friendfeed. Why? Because I'm building a private group to discuss some stuff with them. That'll help us all eventually. - Robert Scoble
*ack* that was me Robert. So Much More Hawaii aka Christine Lu. (i'm in Hawaii this week for Hawaii Tourism Authority) :D -- anyways, previous comment still stands. Go through all the folks you met in China last year. oh and the Poken folks. they're up to cool stuff beyond what they have on the market right now. - Christine Lu
Robert, send you a request to add some people in mobile 2.0 area. - Rudy De Waele
Rudy, names, we want names! Heheh. Thanks. - Robert Scoble
not directly the 2010 web persay, but I think what companies such as Barco are doing at the very highest levels of display technology (their LED screens were used, some 2000 sq. meters of in fact, for the amazing Eurovision set in Moscow) will have a huge impact in years to come on what we all use for our displays. If display resolutions finally start to really rise (on average) that will impact the web considerably - Shannon Clark
I'm mostly familiar with developers, since that's my profession, so I'd add: Damien Katz (developer on CouchDB), Terry Jones (founder of FluidInfo), James Tauber (creator of the Pinax Project), Brian Aker (developer on Drizzle), Mikio Hirabayashi (developer at Mixi.jp), John Resig (wrote jQuery), Malcolm Tredinnick (probably the most active Django developer). There are definitely more but that's off the top of my head. - Eric Florenzano
Marco Derksen - (founder of marketingfacts.nl, www.upstream.nl), Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten (Next Web, Wakoopa), - Erno Hannink
You should put there tarpipe folks... - Marcos Marado
@robert add Lars Hinrichs, founder of XING http://www.xing.com, the only web 2.0 company to successfully IPO. http://www.reuters.com/finance... -- He's likely to be starting something new in 2010. - Jason Goldberg
Wouldn't it make sense to start out with less people then increase until you find your getting interesting, relevant conversations Surely with too many people the conversation would quickly become overwhelming quickly, and maybe less focused - Chris Lloyd
Chris: there's a method to my madness, but, yes, I have a hard constraint that I have to live within. - Robert Scoble
Matt Jones & Matt Biddulph of Dopplr / Felix Petersen - Founder at Plazes.com, now Head of Product Strategy Social Location at Nokia / Christian Sejersen - Mobile Engineering, Mozilla / Raimo van der Klein - SPRXMobile & Layar (watch that name!) / Greg Skibiski - CEO Sense Networks / Ilja Laurs - CEO Getjar / Tommy Ahlers - Founder Zyb - CEO at Wayfinder Systems - now Head of LBS at Vodafone / -> most of them all at http://mobile20.eu conference in Barcelona in June :) - Rudy De Waele
I don't envy your task, but if you get it right it could be very important for future web development. Will anything be published from the group? To aid future web developers? - Chris Lloyd
Robert, maybe Bill Balderaz at Webbed Mkting. About to release an awesome monitoring tool that will push the folks in that space. And maybe Beth Kanter who does wonderful things in the non-profit marketing space. - Gregg Morris
Chris: this list will form the core of Building43 and will discuss the 2010web in a private friendfeed group that will be opened to everyone else on June 11th. - Robert Scoble
And some of the guys at the W3C Mobile Web initiative - http://www.w3.org/Mobile/ Maybe Daniel Appelquist? Also add Mike Rowehl (coded Admob, Mowser, Skyfire, etc...) - Rudy De Waele
there seems to be an overwhelming US bias to the list at the moment - Europe? Asia? - Russell Lack
If you're making it a closed discussion group elite, I urge you to try not to just have all the known incumbents - they're the people that made 2008. Get some new thinkers in there, perhaps people that see the needs and weaknesses, perhaps a few critics, and by all means people from outside the core US/UK/Australia/Canada/France/NL group. Of course it depends what you want to... more... - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Russell: got any names? That's why I put it out here. - Robert Scoble
Bwana McCall - Savvy, all-around blogger and technology reviewer...Bwana.org - Ciro
That's going to be an interesting list. Has it changed much from your older lists? Some user names both on ff or twitter would be great. I'm going to check to see if I can suggest some. Maybe Michael Fruchter should be included too. - Carlos Lorenzo
If we're including journalists, how about Caroline McCarthy? - Chris Lloyd
Carlos: I'm adding names from Facebook right now. The list is getting longer by the minute. - Robert Scoble
You'll be testing the limits of google's spreadsheet app by Wednesday - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I see other Jasons, but no Calacanis.. - Simon Wicks
Is there any particular reason a) why you're making this list b) why anyone should help and c) why anyone should care? The 2010Web seems more like a Robert Scoble PR campaign than a project with any depth. Where's the substance behind this? Someone please point me in the right direction. - Andrew Eglinton
Andrew: a) I'm building a community of people who are fanatical about the Internet for http://www.building43.com which is why I'm doing it. b) why should you help? Well, because maybe I've helped you along the way. c) why should anyone care? You shouldn't. Move on. - Robert Scoble
Interesting mobile 2.0 choice, Rudy. I'd say Andrew J Scott, Rummble Founder & CEO, should be on the list (@andrewjscott). - Alex Housley
Robert. Is building43 a non-profit outfit? - Andrew Eglinton
Andrew: no. It's a community sponsored by Rackspace. - Robert Scoble
Robert, this is a great exercise. But why do you assume those making the biggest contributions are the ones who are fanatical about the Internet? - Kevin Werbach
Kevin: because I have to start somewhere. - Robert Scoble
Kevin, plus, fanaticism without contribution seems pretty empty. And keep in mind what my goal is: it's to try to get more businesses and people into the 2010 web. To do that I'm going to showcase people who are changing the world with the Internet. That will get their attention. Then we need to show them how they can do it too. - Robert Scoble
Is there any danger of building43 becoming an A-list ivory tower or is this going to be the tech savvy giving back to the cyber peasants? Just curious (which obliterates point C of my previous interjection)... - Andrew Eglinton
Andrew: yes, there is that danger. But it will be short lived because after June 11th you'll be interacting with them. - Robert Scoble
on a country (Fr) & corp filter level I can mention those 2 guys in France. For the corporations they really use and promote 2010 tools to the highest level of those orgs: @ChristianFaure, @dlafont (Denis Lafont-Trevisan) - both Cap Gemini but I do own 0 stock there. They just really get it and they are on FF. Another one that really gets it / use it = Régis Gaidot @rgaidot. also in Germany/austria @bodenseepeter toursprung.com (not on ff). Alexandra Carmichael: Curetogether.com. - Harscoat
If you want to stay ahead of the curve, follow tipjoy: http://friendfeed.com/brlewis... - Bruce Lewis
So in other words, you're channeling Barry Goldwater -- extremism in the defense of the Internet is no vice. - Kevin Werbach
Kevin: heheh. I'm just looking for people who are using the Internet to improve lives, improve businesses, or just plain build something cool. Stuff like Epochrates that's helping doctors around the world. Or Zappos. Or Twitter, friendfeed, etc. - Robert Scoble
I think you can add Nicolas Dengler co-founder of cocomment and co-founder of mixin. - Frédéric Sidler
June 11th. I'll be there man. Just make sure you've installed a helipad on top of that building though :) - Andrew Eglinton
The challenge is that most people don't want to change the world. They want something safe and comfortable. I'm with you -- the fanatics are the interesting ones, and life is too short to hang around boring people. Anyway, since I'm listed as an "Obama tech advisor", I'd suggest people from that world -- Beth Noveck, Susan Crawford, Vivek Kundra, Aneesh Chopra, and some others not yet announced. What they are doing is still in alpha, but is incredibly important. - Kevin Werbach
Kevin: are you in DC? I'll be there first week of June and would love to get some interesting interviews about the broadband policy stuff. - Robert Scoble
Robert, DM me and we'll tawk. I'm in DC about once a week, helping out and making trouble. - Kevin Werbach
You've said how you made the list, presented the list. But why are you making the list? (I hate lists btw -- when presented by magazines, newspapers, websites seem like blatant pandering - to both the people on the list and potential consumer) - Brian Sullivan
Brian: a few reasons. For one, I want people who have done something interesting. Having someone like Tony Hsieh or Joe Hewitt or Kevin Werbach or Tim O'Reilly as a founding member of a community will get attention. Having 200 of them will get a lot more. Second, I want to focus my content efforts on these people for the first month. They have more to show about what the 2010web will... more... - Robert Scoble
Robert: so the bottom line is that you are pandering? ;-) - Brian Sullivan
Brian: no, we are making sure we have a good list. - Robert Scoble
There's a method to our madness. The first 100 people you invite to start a community will decide how that community goes for a long time. So we're being very picky about who we start with. - Robert Scoble
towatch - Arvind
In response to your 'method' Robert. I agree, the first wave of people will decide the story of a community - providing they have ownership of it. But building43 is a top-down model, what's to say that the people you invite will want to buy into the ethos of your community? Doesn't community begin with collective impetus, collective need? - Andrew Eglinton
Andrew: Building43 is both going to be top down and bottom up. June 11th you'll see just what we are building (it's not just me working on this) and you'll understand. Hint: it's very friendfeed centric. - Robert Scoble
Well in that case I'm sold. Final question from me, and incidently I appreciate all your responses above, will there be a provision in building43 for artists? - Andrew Eglinton
Andrew: I have designers in mind, but how far off of graphic design and web design do you want to go? - Robert Scoble
Robert: While not being sure exactly where you're going with this, it might make sense to include at least a few (call it a control group) of stodgy old CIOs and/or a person or two from the likes of MSFT, ORCL or others that you would say don't "get" the 2010web (full disclosure I work for MS). Without this I think you risk having some serious groupthink even with the luminaries on your list. Maybe this is planned for later in your efforts but I can't help but think it would be a benefit from the get go. - David Ziembicki
I wish I was doing a big contribution, yet I am sitting here and waiting for it to come. So that I can use it :) - Alpay Erturkmen
David: I have a bunch of Microsoft people on the list. CIOs? I'm gonna go for stodgy old companies later. :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert: Better add David Hyatt (founding member of Safari and WebKit) and Maciej Stachowiak (another lead developer) - Charles Ying
Peter Norvig - Charles Ying
Robert, I see some startup people, but the list looks blogger/journalist heavy. What about those developers who may be the Bret Taylor of tomorrow, like Jesse Stay, Cesare Rocchi (Posty) and others like them. - Rob Diana
Oh I do so use Friendfeed :-) And thanks @ericflo! - Terry Jones
And, BTW, FluidDB is nearly nearly out (as a restricted alpha). End of June, we hope. - Terry Jones
Robert Robert Robert, do you ever sleep? - Myrna
This is all fine and dandy but we've got to have last mile bandwidth. Why isn't there a pure Conduit Communications company out there that doesn't have another agenda? The phone companies have their legacy phone business, the cable companies TV. Fiber to the home is what we need. Not geeks. All those people on that list times a million mean nothing compared to fiber to the home. Why is... more... - Web Nex
Wish this list had a way to breakout who is in Michigan. I would love to connect with these folks. - John Minni
Robert: What about Chris Garrett? Maki (doshdosh)? I was gonna propose Tim Ferriss, then changed my mind, then saw he was already on there. ;) - Shéa Bennett
FYI, Andy Baio is on FriendFeed (http://friendfeed.com/waxpanc...) as is Jeremy Zawodny (http://friendfeed.com/jzawodn). And I'm pretty sure Kevin Fox is on here too... ;-) (http://friendfeed.com/kfury) - Tony Ruscoe
Mark Silva at Real Branding; an outstanding thought leader on the possibilities of Social Media. - Mark Evans
You should add Allyson Kapin who is the founder of Women Who Tech - Sandra
I've been working on how to automate the routing of data streams (such as Twitter/FF updates) so that the network as a whole will begin doing the work of selecting our content for us, eliminating most of the need for manual following/unfollowing. It seems like these ideas could congeal into a definite algorithm very soon. http://joshmaurice.livejournal.com - Joshua Maurice
@rob thank you very very much! glad to be compared to Bret! - funkyboy
theres a top 50 CEO's that twitter here http://images.businessweek.com/ss... on business week - this would be a good starting point - although I think most of them are on here already. - Nigel Walsh
may I be part of Building43 please Robert? - Thomas Power
@Thomas - you are moving to the US? or is this the virtual building.. - Nigel Walsh
Thanks for including me bud :) - Chris Saad
I'd add @bitsweat aka Jeremy Kemper, who worked really hard to merge mirb and Rails into a new version of Rails. It took diplomacy to mold two rival coding teams into one, and as well genius level coding skills. It's hard to find someone on your list, Robert, who is both a diplomat and a great coder. - barce
a bit corny, but in line with Time Magazine - isnt it all of us? - Nigel Walsh
okay, one more not on the list: When Marc Andreesen was on the Charlie Rose show, Charlie asked him what the next big thing was. Marc didn't answer. Then Charlie asked him about who was working on the most interesting stuff. Marc's answer: Andrew Chen. http://andrewchenblog.com/ Andrew came up with the Freemium model spreadsheet... okay, I'll stop. :-) - barce
More fields on Robert Scoble's spreadsheet would be helpful: Affiliation, Title, Facebook Page, Friendfeed Page, Twitter Page, Email Address. (URLs for the pages.) - Sean McBride
Max Levchin ? is another good guy. Co-founder and former CTO of PayPal. - Guy Vander Heyden
'Us' - AJ Kohn
Someone who you don't even know exists yet. - Dean Clark
@yoast for WordPress SEO - Jeroen De Miranda
Robert - I know you have met Sol Lipman and David Beach, founders of 12seconds.tv. - Justin Korn
Robert, btw, John Furrier is on Facebook as well as Friendfeed (you have him listed as FF only). I'm on both - I'll let you decide if I should be on the list or not, though. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
I think you should add Sheryl Breuker, Robert. Her Incidental Interviews are becoming quite a staple and she's a central connector in the social media and communications space. She's on both FF and FB. I think her contribution of bringing the personal side of personalities into view is important. - Ken Camp
Robert- I hate to disagree with you, but some of the folks on this list were movers & shakers in 2007 and 2008 but have since failed to produce anything of note, even simple ideas or concepts. I wouldn't name anyone specifically, but you could stand to be a bit more critical, imvho... Of course, I'm probably critical enough for both of us, and then some. ;) - Jolie O'Dell
have you investigated @andraz and @gandalfar from Zemanta? I think that understanding text will be a killer application for tracking citations and topics between bloggers - Michele Costabile
thanks for the include robert, btw i'm most definitely on friendfeed ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
Dave Armano (now working with Peter Kim, et al) - Susan Beebe
Mark Zuckerberg is on facebook ;) hehe - add X - Susan Beebe
@eldsjal and @MartinLorentzon from Spotify, and if there is someone out there who have not tried spotify yet, ill strongly recommend you to do just that. This is the way it should be done not just with music but also with video! http://www.spotify.com - Nerkez
It's pretty good, but Andrew Keen belongs on there. Also, so few women on Web 2.0-3.0, eh? Glad you include VWS with Rosedale and Koster. Wagner James Au has not done anything original in 5 years. - Prokofy Neva
Barrett Lyon of BitGravity and who was one of a handful of people who mapped the Internet - Loren Heiny
Maybe Steve Gillmor because at least he is always thinking about this stuff all the time and working it, even though he's always wrong. - Prokofy Neva
Prokofy: Steve Gillmor not being on the list was a major oversight. I always treat my friends the worst. Hmm. - Robert Scoble
What about Dan Cohen, the Digital Historian leading the Zotero project? He's on twitter @dancohen. They're going to be launching a social network for researchers from undergrad to professor that will open up the research process to everyone through their Firefox plugin. - Aram Zucker-Scharff
Paul Todd [ http://bit.ly/ek9P0 ]. Involved in development of useful apps ( like OneBridge http://bit.ly/XbOMs ) for Symbian phones... - Arvind
Damn, need to work harder to make it on this list - Alexander van Elsas
Kyle Hebert
The Case for Working With Your Hands - NYTimes.com - http://www.nytimes.com/2009...
"A good job requires a field of action where you can put your best capacities to work and see an effect in the world. Academic credentials do not guarantee this. Nor can big business or big government — those idols of the right and the left — reliably secure such work for us. Everyone is rightly concerned about economic growth on the one hand or unemployment and wages on the other, but the character of work doesn’t figure much in political debate. Labor unions address important concerns like workplace safety and family leave, and management looks for greater efficiency, but on the nature of the job itself, the dominant political and economic paradigms are mute. Yet work forms us, and deforms us, with broad public consequences." - Kyle Hebert from Bookmarklet
I've been looking at the field of "knowledge work" quite a bit lately, and this long essay written by Motorcycle mechanic with a Master's Degree is really eye-opening in terms of what knowledge work has become in our society. It's a long read, but recommended. - Kyle Hebert
