That is *exactly* why FF will become more mainstream than twitter.. try explaining how to tweet to your parents (who are finally comfortable with email)!
- Chris Myles
Woohoo! We're way past Techcrunch Europe on monthly uniques now...Making us the most popular tech blog in Europe! So chuffed. A long way to go though...(updated: this is old. They've caught up this month, but not to worry, we'll surge ahead again soon! :) )
Congrats Zee. I've enjoyed being able to contribute a piece every now and again. Great progress!
- Ken Camp
Well done! I must say I didn't really know about TNW until I subscribed to you on FriendFeed, and now I'm really impressed by your content. So congratulations :)
- Jalada
What? No lawyers in suits? Mark's setting a pretty low bar on the dress code for this sort of thing...:)
- Tomas Remotigue
Our lawyers were wearing shorts actually -- no air conditioning at their office on Sundays I guess.
- Paul Buchheit
Zuckerberg's the only one from FB who could be bothered to show up?
- Andy Bakun
American big business such a formal affair
- Robert Higgins
Contrary to popular misconception, lawyers don't actually enjoy wearing suits. Haul us into work on a Sunday, and we'll definitely be dressing comfortably. :)
- Brian Chang
Andy, the person on the left is Vaughan Smith from Facebook. Sanjeev (the fourth FriendFeed founder) is not pictured because he was boarding an airplane.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, that's so awesome. FB's an awesome company to do business with.
- Jesse Stay
Hey Paul congratulations - FriendFeed has been leading the way since its inception. Are the photos you've posted copy-protected or could I use them in a story on the deal?
- Mitch
For $50m you could at least have hired a photographer who doesn't shake so much. :)
- Rodrigo Jaroszewski
FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money!
- laosan
congratulations! keep the innovation coming...
- ozlubling
VERY happy for you guys. Possibly even owe you one or two. Are we getting FriendPhone next?? Think Mark should seriously think about 'Friendbook' :)
- Charlie Anzman
Congratulations to you and your team.
- Maria Niles
just showed the pictures to my students and they were like, "they look like normal people!" Congrats on the deal, onward and upward!
- xxx xxxxx
Congratulations, Paul -- to you and everybody at FF.
- Eric Johnson
Congrats Paul, Bret and the rest of the team, this is awesome news! The big question on everyone's lips is: Who gets to have http://facebook.com/paul? :)
- Fenn
Congrats, and thanks for taking us all on such a terrific ride! Big ups. :)
- Pete Delucchi
You've done a great job! You deserve this and more... Congrats!

I am sad .. !!! I do not know .. why .. for me its not good news

I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge?
- Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they?
- Jesse Stay
The FB/FF deal rocks. Total win for users and developers.
- Steve Gillmor
My comment is because they can see by the flood of responses people are not happy and this post is just a smidge tacky. People are upset and feel betrayed and they haven't addressed that, not that I expected them too. This is pretty much inline with the way they've handled every other major change but before you only had a handful of disgruntles users whereas this time I'd say the majority are upset.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
Congratulations Paul, you should have got more, but I guess $50m is nothing to sneeze at. Have a great wedding anniversary too, I'm sure you both deserve it. Much happiness - :)
- Chris Loft
Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us.
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
congrats on building an amazing product and incredibly passionate community! I was mad at first, but then realize that the technology was most likely sold, not the community. I'm hoping ff community will stay somewhat untouched and features that have been built into ff will be ported to fb.
- Derek Coatney
Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow.
- Keith Pelczarski
No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell.
- Shane Gibbons
Congratulations to everyone involved. Well done.
- Darius Dunlap
This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed.

Congrats to the FF staff, but you'll have to pardon my lack of exuberance. I have mental pictures of being forced to use the FB UI and it makes me sad =(

Where are the photos of everyone celebrating? No beer or champagne?

Great match-up guys ! The Fabulous Friender Boys ! - Let's see some integrated mashups and extensible apps and FF UI. Given Google and Twitter a run for their money... Looks like they are going to have to "hook-up" now !
- Mike Schmidt
Congratulations Paul and the team! Hopefully we'll still get the same simple UI for FriendFeed. I'm sure however that no matter what you do, things will turn up nicely.
- Ovidiu Predescu
NOOOOO! I _LOVE_ friendFeed and this will change it forever. Yeah - this will improve Facebook. Great deal guys - I can not wait to see how this works out
- Ric Johnson
@Scobleizer: Come on you're a genius and can not realize future of FF? Turkey was one of important countries which is using FF! They asked no one about this! We hate fcking morons and stupid people on facebook, and I'm sure that this post will be real, just read it: http://ff.im/6pRmM
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
But Ahmed you are still being an ass about it, trying to rain on their good times. Go find a hole under the bridge where you belong. You can be sad and not have to come out all bitchy about stuff. Clear thoughtful comments instead of going all into "fuck you" mode.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
OK, that's great. I hope you can be successful at Facebook Dev Team and enjoy spending that money.
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
I think you guys don't have a clue what this means. You#re just handed over to some very suspicious gold digger. It's over for Friendfeed.

Great result Paul. In such a short time, millions of users, 1 new interface and a marriage with internets' celebrity. This is a period which you should write down to make it as an on-line business case. You people are really wise businessmen. Nice job, congrats! :)
- Olcayto Cengiz
Not happy happy congrats bullshit from me-I used FF.
- frankiecarl
Frankie, a lot of us use FriendFeed and are concerned about where things are going from here. As I said in my comment above: I'm happy for the staff but displeased with who they chose to sell to. I'm perfectly capable of feeling both emotions at the same time.

These guys represent the most talked about entreprises (Ok even more so by geeks in the case of Friendfeed) and they're still in their 20s. We're talking millions of dollars and look how relax they look and casually they're dressed.

Awesome, nice to see they are actually in fact human still.

"Given the uncertainty of ad spending, the tremendous dollars going into digital media, the increasingly competitive landscape and the jittery global financial markets, I have added a few criteria to my check-list: * Initially sells to the enterprise for branding, credibility, awareness and early revenues * Can get to revenues within 6 months, tops * Is sold on the basis of ROI, e.g., helps generate revenues or reduce headcount/costs * Integrates easily with existing platforms and/or programs * Either leverages existing open source programs or can itself become partially or fully open source * Has multiple revenue streams, e.g., software, maintenance, services, etc."

couple stretch items on his list but nice of him to share
- mike "glemak" dunn
I was wondering which ones seem a stretch? I was reading this and it describes a startup I am working with to a "T".
- David Muir
12.5-25x seems a stretch to me ... that's grand slam territory. not unachievable, but not by any means "common".
- Andrew Badera
I tend to agree. But I read through and was trying to glean when the exit for the VC would be; after how many years? According to my calculations, asset value growth of over 30% per year still means a 13 year wait on an initial investment of $1 million to walk away with $25 million.
- David Muir
VC is almost always in terms of a ~5 year exit strategy I thought ...
- Andrew Badera
VC is evil. Smart CEOs do everything they can to avoid this route.
- Geoff Livingston
Everyone would love to bootstrap Geoff, but it's not a matter of "smart" vs. "dumb" it's a matter of practicality and pragmatism.
- Andrew Badera
25x return selling into enterprise space which tends to see rapid fast followers and commoditization is one stretch david... not all vc's are evil geoff but certainly some are - expect it's probably same ratio as general life ;) a huge percentage of today's businesses have leveraged vc funding when in proof of concept phase so they (we) serve a purpose... andrew's pragmatic statement is right on...
- mike "glemak" dunn
here's a few more stretches now that i'm on a laptop & not my iphone - 1) revenue in 6 months along w/ selling into enterprise is a challenge since enterprise sales cycles are notoriously long for any company let alone an unproven startup 2) integrates easily in an enterprise space is an oxymoron - again, its a good post and not all things stated are stretches (plus it is his fund so his call)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
sorry one more, the positive: "intersection of web services, network performance and cloud computing. More and more enterprises will shift portions of their processing, services and storage to the cloud, as the imperatives of cost reduction, scalability and flexibility take hold." - i think this is right on and valid, i'm seeing the same sorts of companies approach me and can't fault their biz models...
- mike "glemak" dunn
Andrew/Gregory, I actually clarified this in another comment thread. What I mean is that it takes no more than $1-$2 million to know if you've got a $25-$50 million business. I take lots of risk. I just want to make sure the business doesn't require loads of capital to know whether or not it is likely to get the traction required to be successful. It may well make sense to raise an additional $2-$3 million in a Series A to help the company execute its growth plan, and I'm ok with that.
- Roger
Although an Apple Fanboy, I've betrayed Apple's iTunes. I've been exclusively buying music from Amazon MP3 for about a year and half. Amazon's had a better bitrate (although both 256kbps now) and it's an MP3 (not AAC like iTunes). Anyone else doing the same?
For what it's worth a 256k AAC file has a lot more fidelity than a 256k MP4.
- Sparky, a big deal
Well it sounds cool on my Sony X-Series
- outofmyarse
Lala.com, Amazon, Amie Street & Napster on this end
- LANjackal
Yep, even with all my iTunes gift cards, I still buy more from Amazon MP3. Their deals have always been better and I don't have to pay extra to upgrade to a DRM-free higher quality track.
- Cloud
Yeah - I only buy through amazon as well.
- Internet's Tad
i usually take whoever has the album/track i want.. if they both have it i usually go to whoever i checked first..
- Jay Martinez
I never use iTunes. I've been using Amazon MP3 from the beginning...love it.
- Bonnie Foster
Usually torrent music, but I bought a rare Simpsons album at Amazon.
- Vezquex: God of FF
If there's no difference in price, I stick with iTunes.
- ronin
I buy most of my MP3s through LaLa now. In general its cheaper than the other places and its convenient since I'm streaming from there already.
- Neil
I have never bought from iTunes because of aac. I don't buy much music online but when I do it has been from Amazon. Their download manager has great Linix support.
- Vaughn
from BuddyFeed
I check Amazon every month. They also have several hundred MP3s available for FREE.
- Bill Sodeman
I go back & forth, but I prefer Amazon for your same reasons.
- Neil
from iPod
Nope. I only buy from iTunes and I like their AAC files.
- Peter
from iPhone
I've definitely been doing the same. I especially like the fact that Amazon offers the option to download the Mp3 independently of having to download and install yet another music management program.
- Miss Elle
Yup - if I buy music online, it's Amazon.
- amygeek
Same here. Have been buying music exclusively from Amazon for about a year now.
- Tsega Dinka
not a fan of AAC. plus, my first purchase experience w/iTunes was terrible. I'm all ripped CDs (to FLAC), AmazonMP3, emusic, beatport and direct artist purchases now.
- jbrotherlove
Only when I have amazon affiliate credit, sadly.

+1. Although UrlBarExt kinda trumps their URL shortening support via one-click shortening AND copying within the address bar itself. It's all good though, I use both :)

How can you take the rain like that? Colorado's water rights laws are fucked up, totally deranged.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
this is a bigger than water rights. How can some people change the world when other people are working the system by playing stupid. This is a common trend today in many communities. Remember how AP is trying to figure out a way to charge for news that they get from the web.
- Tweet Feeds
Another instance of government bureaucracy and regulation run amok!
- Chuck Adams
+1 Chuck! You'd think that governments would be happy that people would take it on themselves to improve usage of an already scarce resource. Obviously that's not the case in Colorado.
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Uggh, utter ridiculousness. While the case can be made that rain is a tributary to a stream, locking in rain on one person/entity? This is effectively a patent on nature - huge fail.
- jcunwired
Oh the irony of environmentalists bemoaning the government telling them how they can & can't use their property. I guess the shoe is on the other foot now.
- You.
This is as asnine as the city of Tampa fining a homeowner $100 for having an outside water fountain that kept recycling one gallon of water - BOTTLED WATER. http://u.nu/6365

She can't capture her water to water her plants because someone else at the end of the river wants to buy the water to water their plants. Go figure.

As a european i can only say, this is a joke, right?
- Björn Fritz
As a Canadian I can only say it must be a joke ...
- johnny
As a southern californian I can only say "what's rain?"
- Steve C
Shockingly frustratingly stupid. Some municipalities like Toronto have even encouraged people to disconnect their downspouts from the storm sewers to cut down on the amount of rainwater that is unnecessarily contaminated by traveling through the sewers. Naturally filtered is the way to go.
- Doug Slater
As an American I can only say this doesn't really surprise me.

Our country is full of idiots. We survive in spite of them.

"GreaseKit is a SIMBL plugin, that adds user scripting to Safari, Mailplane, Diet Pibb.app and all WebKit applications."
- Micah Wittman
from Bookmarklet
Hey, because of you I had another look at Greasekit's settings. Turns out you have to enable Greasekit for each fluid.app SSB individually. It seems I now have access to greasemonkey scripts within my FriendFeed SSB. WOOT!
- Meryn Stol
What types of functionality does it bring?
- Drew Lucas
Right on, Meryn! Regarding the FriendFeed Service Icons script, it doesn't take much to make it compatible with Chrome/GreaseKit (though so far I've only tested my scripts with Firefox, Chrome) - I think chrisofspades just hasn't had a chance to do it. I'll contact him and see if he's Ok with me jumping in to assist.
- Micah Wittman
Micah, is this a problem specific for this script then? I think greasekit is just bugging... I wonder what kind of other user script I could use to test...
- Meryn Stol
I think Greasekit is bugging, cause when trying to install the same script twice, it does say something about "already installed, override?" but it doesn't show up in the script list under "manage scripts" in the Greasekit menu.
- Meryn Stol
Hmm, I think I found the trick: You need to install the scripts inside Safari itself, not with a fluid.app SSB. Scripts installed in Safari also show up in the SSB's for which Greasekit is enabled.
- Meryn Stol
friendfeedFilterByService does not seem to be Safari compatible. I'm sure it's running though, because a new line: "DELAY 0.5 seconds, @-replies" is added below the FriendFeed logo.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, there are several configuration settings to adjust based on what you want it to do. Edit the script and read through the /************ Configuration **********/ section, make changes there, save script, reload web page.
