"If you ask any of the Apple “fanboys” why they are so devoted to Apple, at least one of the reasons you will hear is that Apple “sweats the small stuff,” which really proves its dedication to user experience and attention to detail. Here’s a few of my favorites that demonstrate Apple’s attention, not just to its hardware and software, but to even the product packaging. See how many you may have noticed before, and feel free to add any that I might have missed in the comments below."

if i go to the username link while im signed into my account then it doesnt give me an option to change the group URL
- Jason Pollock
I think its best to choose something professional such as your name instead of something stupid, shame had to be less more then 5 characters otherwise I would of chosen my first name!
- Liam Daly
hey I got full name with a dot in the middle and it works without it as well, neat. :-)
- Project Glow Guy
Facebook is just telling me that I picked my URL because I did for my personal page but havent for my group
- Jason Pollock
shelisrael and 1938media were both available a few minutes ago
- Ken Sheppardson
Can you get two usernames or is it one and done???
- Mike
i still cant figure out how to now change my group URL link.. i have over 1000 members in there but the facebook.com/username link tells me i already changed my URL, which i did for my page but not my group page.... any thoughts anyone?
- Jason Pollock
Ben: You are right, it looks like Facebook gives you both FirstName.LastName and FirstNameLastName.
- Rolf Schewe
Jason: when you choose a FirstName.LastName or without a dot Facebook reserve the other for you.
- Vinko
Firstinitial.Lastname also resolves to FirstinitialLastname ...EDIT: in fact, it seems that you can insert arbitrary and multiple periods anywhere and it will resolve to your periodless name, much like a GMail address.
- Tinfoil 2.0
1601californiaave is still available

OMG Allen! facebook is are losers! fuckers!
- Orli Yakuel
seriously u guys r so funny lmao, usernames r so fun to play around with and I took the advantage 2 input mine in the blank space: http://www.facebook.com/pkkha: its a personal one.
- polou/indigo_bow
Jason--after you select your username, you'll see the option to select a name for you pages.
- Kathy Fitch
Michael: I am just seeing if some fun names are available.
- Robert Scoble
Why did they suggest "."s if it was going to ignore them? Wouldn't it have made more sense not to allow "."s?
- Paul Lancaster
seriously--it's one environment that gets progressively less appealing as it develops.
- Kathy Fitch
Stephen: Facebook PR has saved that for me, but it'll take a while because I missed the deadline. I wanted to see if I could get "Robert."
- Robert Scoble
ooohhhh--love the book snowcrash. The robot doggie makes me cry every time.
- Kathy Fitch
facebook.com/asdfasdf redirected me back to home!
- Project Glow Guy
Robert - how are you checking this since you already secured your name? you must have a fake account for this!! LOL
- Susan Beebe
Kathy: "sighing" is still available.
- Robert Scoble
Yes, I fell for Facebook's massive publicity stunt and got sucked into watching the timer count down to zero so I could get /freddavis... same as I have here on FriendFeed, Twitter (if I ever get into my account again, sheesh!), Flickr, etc. ...and beat out the over 2,000 other Fred Davis's in the US... (sorry Redskins fans)...
- Fred Davis
ATX should get an exception to the five letter minimum rule
- Gary Etie
What's more valuable on a social media site than your OWN name when all you are doing is selling yourself?? Some silly name suggestions up there. Even for nerds...
- Dean Kakridas
top100 is not available. top1000 is.
- Robert Scoble
actually, my user names are worth more to me than my real name, Dean.
- Kathy Fitch
So is Facebook doing the "verified names" like Twitter?
- Jorge Escobar
I should have gotten "sidneycrosby" or "kobebryant" just to get a zillion hits over the next few days.
- Kevin Mohr
I agree, kathy. I went right for dthree, not my real name
- dthree
StephenPickering wasn't hard but there is a guy in Australia who's going to be pissed at me
- Stephen Pickering
Matthew: I registered "Scoble" for my son at 9 p.m. So that's the answer. I already had RobertScoble saved by PR. But I probably would rather have "Scoble."
- Robert Scoble
This is something that frustrates me. How do I access my fan page from within my account? I don't see anywhere to do it. (I have 2 fans heheeheheh)
- Stephen Pickering
Thanks Kathy, would love to have you as a "fan" but I don't even know how to direct you to the page! hehehehheheheheh
- Stephen Pickering
Hmm... I get the screen "The page you requested was not found."
- Jorge Escobar
Robert: Damn i only have guessing urls to go off after securing my name.
- Project Glow Guy
could it be that the small caps twitter and not the big caps Twitter is available?
- polou/indigo_bow
toptwitterer is still available. So is topgeek. Jorge, remember that I'm using the tool where you can register them. That's the only way to really check.
- Robert Scoble
Beware, just because it says "Page not found", doesn't mean it is available. There is a big restricted list somewhere, and I found one (a city name).
- Paul Holmes
Paul: funny, "restricted" is still available.
- Robert Scoble
Scoble, what 's the record for # of comments on friend feed - are you going for the record? BTW - I love friend feed.
- Robert Freeze
halfmoonbay looks like it might be available
- Gary Etie
facebook.com/fail appears to be available, as well.
- Paul Holmes
Robert Freeze, I don't think record threads are created, I think they happen. Lots of people try to get one going, whereas Scoble just has the dynamics going at this point in time, and I think he'd agree.
- Gary Etie
I got my name! Go ME! I don't care if anybody likes facebook or not but I really think it's important to have your own name so no one else uses it.
- Sheryl
Sheryl: Especially when its common :-P Take that 500+ other me's on facebook.
- Project Glow Guy
Facebook will be busy looking with trademarks infringements this coming few weeks!
- polou/indigo_bow
@polou - I know, it's still kind of funny
- Paul Holmes
I tried 2 put a submission 2 my biz name, but the biz number reg was not defined clearly. We have IDs with names and since laws are different in Canada and elsewhere then US.
- polou/indigo_bow
Ben: Agreed. Mine isn't as common but I tried for my first name and it was gone. Good thing I use my full name everywhere. Continuity. :)
- Sheryl
How hard could it have been to prevent creation of trademarked names, without verification from the trademark holder? Easier than it's going to be to straighten out the mess. It's got to be part of the planned hype, with built-in controversy, and ongoing coverage.
- Gary Etie
I'm Zuckerberg, and I'm thinking, how do I force a relationship between celebrities and businesses and FB? Let the world register their trademarked names! Yea, that's the ticket!
- Gary Etie
facebook.com/scobeleizer and facebook.com/scobelizer are still available

The following are taken: pagenotfound, 404error
- Project Glow Guy
odd those pagesnotfound and 404eror r taken wonder 4 what the reason?
- polou/indigo_bow
The notorious "dot" issue - no need to worry if you are facebook.com/PaulHolmes or facebook.com/Paul.Holmes, or facebook.com/P.a.u.l.H.o.l.m.e.s. - it all goes to the same page.
- Paul Holmes
Paul: Seems dashes work the same way. ben-cooper = ben.cooper = bencooper.
- Project Glow Guy
So, it has been established, both "."s and "-"s (dots and dashes?) are ignored at Facebook. At Gmail, ".", dots are ignored, "-", dashes are not. At both FB and Gmail, g.a.r.y.e.t.i.e = garyetie = gary.etie. but ≠ g-a-r-y-e-t-i-e, or gary-etie, for Gmail.
- Gary Etie
I just decided to continue in my 12 year old mistake and take iphigenie again.
- Iphigenie
It would be getting harder to register firstname.lastname by now (Unless you have a more unique name). After the main one is taken you get reverse name taken lastname.firstname then they start spilling out to using initials which multiplies the amount of people that could also use it. All variations seem to be taken for my name now.
- Project Glow Guy
ender and enderwiggin are both taken
- Jeremy Toeman
seems like all LOTR, harry potter, and star wars names are gone... guess i'll just go with my own name, though i'm in no rush, since nobody else seems to have it. :)

I met Terry a while back. This thing really is awesome. My impression is that he's basically a little concerned with premature exposure. He has this idea of what it is and should be, and is worried that people won't get it. Maybe he's over it now-- joking aside, Scoble featuring is a big promotion. I hope he gets the attention he richly deserves.

I really enjoyed the videos. Not only is his idea a possible "game-changer", but watching him describe his work it's impossible to miss how passionate he is about it. I wish him the best of luck!

Richard, the only things that ever crash on my Mac are Microsoft's office products.
- David Eedle
and my pc never crashes, we can all play this game. crashes and lockups happen all the time, on all different platforms. I just want to know who will have my refund when a kernel panic happens. If they said "less" it would be one thing, but they didn't.
- Richard Lawler
Yeah, I've managed to lock up my Mac Pro a few times. Not very often, but it's possible.
- Tom Harrison
I agree with Richard. I really honestly just don't understand the Mac vs. PC debate anymore. They're essentially the same thing now, you just get things done a little differently.
- Tyler Hayes
Tyler: it's not a Mac vs PC thing anymore it's Mac vs Windows (which can be reduced to Mac vs PC) but at it's core, it's apple vs microsoft ... plus the mac is a Personal Computer, but since Microsoft has given PCs a bad name they tried to brand the Mac as not a PC as to not muddle their brand's image.

This is funny, but continuing the same campaign isn't a big enough response. They need to come up with a campaign that resonates as well as the Laptop Hunters series.

He wanted to show how journalists use the internet as a primary source and how people are connected especially through the internet, he said ... “I didn’t expect it to go that far. A WIKIPEDIA hoax by a 22-year-old Dublin student resulted in a fake quote being published in newspaper obituaries around the world.

Wikipedia is not a source; if you treat it like one, you deserve public ridicule :)
- Tudor Bosman
BBC and Daily Mail are using it such. Remember how much crap I got from all of you because I said Wikip is making us lazy and stupid? Well, this is an example. We (our generation) should know better but what about our kids?
- Mona Nomura
Mona: I think that's an overarching generalization. Wikipedia is a very powerful tool, but you need to know its limits and use it accordingly. I'd rather have more information easily available, even if there's a risk that it may be tainted.
- Tudor Bosman
but then, Mona, you do enjoy making overarching generalizations in order to spark debate :)
- Tudor Bosman
It's a powerful quote, and in it a deep entrenched idea, a hoax or not it was a remarkable way to truly see how far such things can travel. I wonder if we as people in the here and now made it viral because it seemed so appropriate, to the times and the challenges that life always provides, it's a rollercoaster for sure but nonetheless, it does show the power of a community based journalistic approach.
- Raymond Marr aka Knatchwa
I never denied Wikip being a powerful tool. I am more concerned by the bigger picture. Unless it is reiterated Wikip is a supplement, not the solution, our future generations are at risk of picking up lazy habits.
- Mona Nomura
my 13year old is allowed to use wikipedia as a source in his school projects as long as he properly references the information... so teachers are teaching that wikipedia is ok... I freaked when I found out.. told him to triple check any source, even wikipedia before using anything.. what would you do?
- Kim
Wikipedia is broad, but not deep. I use it to find out what I want to learn more about, then go to authoritative sources for the depth (if I care).
- Tudor Bosman
Wiki is not as reliable as many authoritative sources, but no source is 100% reliable. There are many mistakes in the Encyclopedia Britannica, as there would be in anything created and curated by people. Despite its imperfections, Wiki's power and breadth make it an invaluable and unprecedented tool.
- Christopher Chung
Kim - that is exactly what I am worried about. I would've done the same exact thing you did and told my child to triple check sources. Your 13yo is very lucky to have you, but what about the children whose parents aren't or can't be involved for whatever reason? With our educational system such CRAP, it's unfair to the children that doesn't have anyone to be left behind. :(
- Mona Nomura
Mona: here's the flip side: Wikipedia can easily satisfy a child's thirst for knowledge in an environment where neither parents nor teachers give a damn. Sure, the information is incomplete and sometimes incorrect, but it's better than nothing.
- Tudor Bosman
I see Wikipedia primarily as a jumping-off point - use it to get the lay of the land before you spend your time jumping down rabbit holes that don't lead anywhere, but always verify what you see on Wikipedia with a different, more reliable source. I use Wikipedia and Google searches at work as springboards when I first start doing legal research so that I don't end up billing the client...
- Brian Chang
I guess I really disagree with your statement that Wikipedia is making us stupid; among the things that are "making us stupid", Wikipedia is really far down on the list. Wikipedia allows you to easily fulfill a desire for knowledge; there are many factors that attempt to suppress that desire for knowledge, and those are really dangerous. To name a few: religious, "do not ask questions" attitudes towards authority; dumbed-down news; reality TV.
- Tudor Bosman
I'm sure it's just as accurate as many other famous quotes.
- Paul Buchheit
Nono, I see your stance and where you are coming from. I too, think it's great there is a LOAD of information right in front of our faces, accessible to any and all (...w/ Internet or a library card). Technically, my word choice should've been "lazy" instead of "stupid", but people pay attention more when they are being called stupid. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Paul, I'm going to add a quote to your wikipedia page and hope it becomes famous. :)
- Dan Hsiao
Good idea Dan. Make it a good one though.
- Paul Buchheit
"Batman should have just killed the joker when he had the chance"
- Private Sanjeev
Yes, it would have prevent the whole second half of the movie, but that's an actual quote, so it doesn't count.
- Paul Buchheit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... According to Wikipedia's own guidelines, it's quite specifically meant to *not* be a source. If you find something on it that you want to cite in any way that matters (to me that includes school papers and the like), you should use it to find the original source, and in its absence give up and go elsewhere. I would encourage my own kids (or students if I were a teacher) to use Wikipedia like the card catalog.
- Joel Webber
Right. Guidelines aside, who is going to teach those to use it as a catalog/starting point/what say you. In theory, Wikip should be used like an encyclopedia. We, who've had the luxury to use book and digital forms know this. What about our children? That is my greatest concern.
- Mona Nomura
Completely agreed, Mona. I also cringed when I read "so teachers are teaching that wikipedia is ok". If teachers and parents don't clarify exactly what Wikipedia *is*, and how to use it, then it will be to everyone's detriment. But I'd also cringe if a teacher told my child not to use it at all -- it clearly has its place, but the difference between "index" and "source" is important.
- Joel Webber
I don't think using an encyclopedia instead of primary sources is a new phenomenon. When I was in school it was the textbook or an encyclopedia in the library. Now it's the computer and wikipedia. The first time I had a history course that was entirely based on primary sources was in college.
- invariant
I work on education stuff, and the whole "is Wikipedia reliable" is a big deal. I'm pretty sure someone could build a tool to suggest how reliable a given page is. HistoryFlow (http://www.research.ibm.com/visual...) is a good start for this, but also see the discussion about the statistical model for predicting conflict in...

- Nick Lothian
I work at a college and we grade down when students cite Wikipedia because anyone can edit it and it is not considered a reliable source of information. Not to discount it though... It is a great jumping off point and frequently links to great sources of primary research.

The Guardian loves Twitter and has reaped the rewards. @guardiantech is (rightly) one of the most-followed users and the network delivers a ton of traffic to their site, which is full of pro-Twitter stuff. They write these contrary pieces once in a while in a futile attempt to keep the balance. :)

Of course they're right, the whole internet is the preserve of the elite. We should never have allowed this computer technology into the hands of the great unwashed majority. Look how they've ruined it for us.
- Gilbert Harding
I've never been referred to as neither elite or tiny. I'm strangly honoured.
- Kevin Brew
Yay, I'm an elitist sucker. It's all a bit rich coming from the Guardian, that bunch of right leaning conservatives.
- David Eedle
I think the global internet is controlled by an elite (edit : for the moment)
- stanjourdan
what does FTM stand for, facebook-twitter-mafia?
- Mike Nencetti
It's not a sucker's game that only serves the needs of a tiny elite unless you expected it to be a real social platform and conversation engine. If that's your expectation you'll likely feel suckered. If you expect that it's a internet megaphone ... aka new marketing device ... then you probably feel alright about Twitter. I think the problem comes because people want it to be something other than it is. [edit] Thinking I've become a broken record on the subject :(
- AJ Kohn
Sounds like just a misguided user who himself believes that it is about getting the biggest number of followers and believes that all other users have the same goal. He went to a party and he didn't get enough attention. And, uh, the Guardian? Isn't that really only serving a tiny elite? I mean I am not making anything from its existence.
- Jim Espinoza
While Twitter may be a sucker's game (or may not be the verdict is still out on that) it's certainly not just for a tiny elite. Twitter Inc may cater to a tiny elite, but that's not to say thy're the only beneficiaries.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
No. My use case for Twitter is very practical.
- Laura Norvig
The Guardian also use Twitter... Do they consider themselves part of the elite?
- Valentin Danner
Like almost anything, it really depends on how you use Twitter and what relationships you make there. It can be a useful tool and (for what I use it for) it serves my needs. I'm not part of an elite anything.
- ax0n
Seth F has no idea what he is talking about. apparently he has been living under a rock and has not hear of twitter journalism and personal branding among other things. Oh he is also too scared to find out that he is not as popular as he should be as a tech writer for the Guardian and winner of the EEF award. So I wud urge all his twitter followers to unfollow him for this uncalled for diss at twitter.

Over my years as an entrepreneur and now venture capitalist, I am struck by the number of people who say they want to be an entrepreneur. I am also struck by how evident it is that they don't have entrepreneurial DNA -http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/tjan...
Entrepreneur has become a grossly overused word. Everyone has a startup or three (including myself) and the net result is that many good ideas get lost in the shuffle. But there's another problem. VC in Silicon Valley reminds me of the Studios in Hollywood. To get ahead you need to know the right people.
