I was about to ask that you post them side by side. Yours is certainly less jarring. It's the arc and the dual blue "zones" that bother me with the original.
- Benjamin Golub
I just know the one on the left is sitting in a Googler's directory of alternatives somewhere... I wonder what the rationale was.
- Kevin Fox
Yours is simpler but I still don't like the colors (is there any meaning for the colors btw?) EDIT: Well I guess it's the colors in their logo, but still...
- directeur
I just can't understand the fascination and attention paid to what icon Google has chosen. Why is this even a little important?
- Brian Sullivan
i would still rather it be less colors and not lower case, but i like this a lot better. less of that green is wonderful and the smooth edge of the blue is really nice. much better!
- Rachel Lea Fox
It's not like it's an important 100 year old iconic logo, like Pepsi.
- Matthew DeVries
Well, Kevin's job is design I think, and he's sharing his ideas... The favicon doesn't matter that much for me personally but we still can talk about tastes, don't we? :)
- directeur
I thought we were still carrying over the uproar over the change (which come on, didn't even deserve a thread). I guess I like the one on the left, the split green red makes me stabby
- Matthew DeVries
I obsess over small things. Trust me: you benefit from my obsession even if you never know it.
- Kevin Fox
Kevin, sure we do! UI is all about the smallest details :)
- directeur
until I saw your huge version, I never realized it had a "g" in it, I always thought it was just an abstract color-splotch.
- David Jeske
I personally like the original google favicon a lot. The one with a big multi-colored G. In this version you can hardly see the G. Also the use of so much color on this one clashes with the minimalistic bright colors on white background homepage design theme.
- Bindu Reddy
It might be better if the lower counter was not in yellow. Yellow does not have sufficient contrast against white to make the figure-ground relationship work. Perhaps restrict it to white, green, red, and blue.
- Neil Kandalgaonkar
I -think- the new (official) favicon had its weird color blocking in order to (roughly) give each color 1/4 of the total space. I dunno. To me, neither really reads as 'g' that well, and they don't evoke 'google' for me since I think of Google as mostly white. The original favicon used Google's colors much more subtly - one pixel wide lines bordering the white square - and used the capital G, the actual first letter in the official logo.
- Andrew C
Argh, re-reading the official announcement for the 2nd Google favicon ( http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008... ) just drives me insane all over again. If the redesign was to more scalable icons for mobile devices, why are a bunch of them even busier and harder to read?
- Andrew C
I dunno. I'm a visual person. I make my living as a designer. I just can't get bothered about this. shrug
- Jason Wehmhoener
Pingmag's interview with Magibon, the girl who made Youtube videos of herself staring at the camera and became really popular in Japan. I wrote a blog post about her a long time ago at http://www.jessyoko.com/blog... and it's still the most popular, most commented entry on my blog.
- Jess Lee
from Bookmarklet
@Akira: She has fans in other countries as well, but I'd say she's more popular in Japan than anywhere else. She gained fame on 2chan with Japanese users, and it was the Japanese media that invited her to perform on shows and stuff.
- Jess Lee
To, uh, "perform"? With perform meaning stare at the camera and say nothing? What has this world come to? And get her off my lawn! <sigh>
- Adam Lasnik
She has some SERIOUSLY messed up teeth. Better she not talk.
- ld
i spotted a weaboo. u forgot to show the pic celebrarting her scary tooth..i think its part of the phenomenon ;)
- Chris Hofmann
i like her teeth (remind me of a bunny)
- minus-one
she does resemble an idealized anime character, but i fear the attraction/popularity might be a bit more dark in nature.
- Cee Bee
I'm agreeing with cee bee here. I hate to be all jaded and skeptical about such things, but...uh...
- Lainie
cynical perhaps, but the the idolatry of "cuteness" with young female imagery in japan stems from a cultural dysfunction that borders on the illicit
- Cee Bee
I agree with Cee Bee that part of her appeal is she looks younger than her age, which from what I understand, is a prized commodity in Japan.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
hebephilia, hmm... i prefer to call it "moe" 萌え (don't really like words with "-philia" part)
- minus-one
@Alvin - not really. Finding her attractive though she looks young (but pubescent) would not indicate hebephilia unless it was an exclusive or overwhelming trend in someones preferences. Even at that, she is perfect for the Japanese market anyway. All that said, she has HUGE eyes and she is just damn cute.
- Soulhuntre
pathogenisation is the only way to deal with uncommon things for freudians :) im happy to be immune to that as a deleuzian lol
- Chris Hofmann
@Chris Hofmann actually, hebephilia is pretty much the word (it gets it right, ne?); it's just that i'm not ready to be called "hebephil"... better "otaku" (・ω・)
- minus-one
I'm not a huge fan of intentional cuteness. Maybe that's why I don't really enjoy this. It just irritates me.

Thanks to Rocky Barbanica ( @rocmanusa on Twitter) for doing such a great job on all my videos as producer/camera guy/editor. These wouldn't happen without him. Tom, we'll try, getting access to factories is VERY difficult.
- Robert Scoble
I'm gonna call you on it... You said you could buy a 500GB drive for $300, a 500GB Seagate drive is approx $65 retail. :) Great vid, it's interesting to see that kind of stuff (the hardware side).
- Dr. Apps
from twhirl
Dr. Apps: yeah, when I said that I knew I was high, but I didn't know what the real price was so I would rather be on the high side than the low one.
- Robert Scoble
Eric Savits over at Barrons had an interesting article about what's up in Seagate's stock price: http://blogs.barrons.com/techtra... -- the fact that a 500gb drive is $55 shows how tough this business is.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah that price point is really low...margins must be incredibly thin right now... So glad i sold off my OEM hardware business in 2000... best move EVAR!
- Susan Beebe
Sounds interesting. Downloading this now to watch later.

Clean, simple, the Google trademarks. (It's also looking a lot like Zoho)
- Gary Burge
I think I prefer the new look, seems cleaner.
- Robert Nelson
Needs a few Greasemonkey tweaks but overall it's better.
- richrecruiter
looks cleaner but less usable to quickly scan things, due to the far lower contrast (no more blue highlight and menu background). Everything blends together on my screen. Will get used to it, i guess. The typography does not look harmonious, they ought to tweak font sizes and spacing a bit.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
too much white! I would have loved to see it go in a different direction.
- vijay
i got confused. i meant to like this one. looks cleaner for sure. i LOVE helvetireader script though. it kills
- Cee Bee
+1 for Helvetireader! Lots of space and clean to the max.
- vijay
I haven't seen the new gReader.. but you know what still looks gorgeous? Feedly. ;)
- Phil G
I don't like it yet. It feels sharp and poorly spaced. But I'll get used to it.
- Glen Turpin
I like it. If you were new to reader this would be an easier interface to use, IMO.
- Clay Newton
pretty much the only reason i use google reader instead of another web service is that it used to be fast (not anymore) and the social feed websites integrate with it.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
It's too early to tell, Sarah. It does look -- *brighter*
- Jorge Escobar
I like it, just hope a redesign means that they bring in themes.
- Zach Chisholm
Any idea how to decollapse the navigation pane back again? I don't say a way to undo the evil that I did.
- Todd Hoff
I was expecting something drastic so I'm a little disappointed. Seems like more of the same with a little cleanup. Nothing offensive and certainly no major changes that make it bad.
- Kenton
I'm inclined to say that the new Google Reader is much superior to the old GR.
- Jamelle
Love the feature upgrades, style is a little stark for me.
- Kamath (नमः)
Disagree. I was so used to the previous version. But that's because I live there.
- Louis Gray
I actually didn't like it when I signed in after getting home. Perhaps I was far too used to the previous look? It's practically always open in another tab. But I'm getting used to it, and it's not too bad..
- deepikaur
I like it, but I want to hide the "Friends shared items" from the sidebar. That's the one feature I don't use.
- Larry Hudson
Like, but I also want to see which blogs you put in the B, C, and D-list, Sarah. :)
- Matt Cutts
Looks sweet, but appears to show less articles on the screen at once.
- Mike Reynolds
like the new google reader and i like sarah too
- Zee.
Haven't seen it yet, as I use Feedly.
- Grant Bierman
I like that I can now find the "Add Subscription" button without scouring the left-hand pane for 5 minutes
- Craig Eddy
Some things are better. Two things I don't like is that the font size in the feed panel on the left seems to have doubled, and sometimes keyboard shortcuts don't work.
- Tanath
liek it, but it looks weird with Helvetireader now - and that was soooo nice... well, hope for a Helvetireader and Better GReader greasemonkey updates now.
- Peter Efland
The script helps, but it has a downside too. When you mark an item as read with 'm' the highlighting goes away. Why can't anything be perfect? :P
- Tanath
loving most of it - especially the collapsing of stuff, but hoping for themes soon. having occasional problems with the keyboard shortcuts though :(
- siggimus
Google Calendar now supports CalDAV: http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008... . It's sort of the universal donor of calendars; it will sync with almost anything.
If you look carefully, you can see how he loops photo sequences, and then pans across the looping sequence. It give a really nice effect. Great technique!

That might be obvious but people with a lower IQ are also citizens of the democracy. This indicates to me that people with a lower IQ are simply concerned with different issues than those with higher IQs. It doesn't mean their vote is any less important.
- ·[▪_▪]·
I'd argue that it's because weaker minds (read: those who don't have critical thinking skills) are more easily swayed.
- l0ckergn0me
"Stronger" minds are easily influenced too. You just don't appeal to their beliefs but to their ego.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Indeed, the smart comment is no comment :)
- Mike Reynolds
Leave it to the smarter people in the country who can think for themselves to vote for the right person.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Stupid! If this were median IQ one might draw a statistically significant correlation between IQ and vote cast. Makes me wonder about the IQ of those that pass this stuff along.
- Ryan Petty
this is the same thing from 2004, they just changed the names, it's still silly.
- Anika
Republicans used to be the party of the upper class, but money = intelligence so we can no longer give Republicans the upper class. Certainly the lower and middle classes belong to Democrats. So what does that leave Republicans? Oh, okay, still no comment :)
- Mike Reynolds
Are they actually trying to say that the average IQ of most of the states is BELOW average? I wonder what percentage of people actually get IQ tests, anyway. My theory is it happens when people are looking for problems, like for those with learning disabilities or who are suspected of having ADHD.
- MiniMage, sheeple of FF
Do you really think this helps your cause? In all actuality, it makes you look like a complete fool. "IQ and the wealth of nations" contains no IQ information for the US States. When you do find "average IQ" numbers for US states, they aren't anything like the numbers in this chart. You are makeing a good case for a negative correlation between IQ and the electrion results when you and others push these fraudulent charts.
- John Rubier

Thanks for the article @msblog. I quote: "And so, politically, the G.O.P. is squeezed at both ends. The party is losing the working class by sins of omission — because it has not developed policies to address economic anxiety. It has lost the educated class by sins of commission — by telling members of that class to go away."
- Mike Reynolds
@Bjorn I can understand feeling the notion of the IQ test and score might be contentious for theoretical reasons, but why racist? And why a myth? I mean, IQ tests exist, people exist, smart people and dumb people exist, and often there is a strong correlation between smart people and high IQs, dumb people and low IQs...which part is mythical?
- Neal Jansons
But then Obama got elected by people who had the cultural bias in IQ tests the other way.

What picture do you think the American media should be painting of China? They are quickly industrializing and it's exciting to see how much growth they are able to sustain... It's amazing what 1B+ people can do
- Chris Reichow
Christopher: I watch a lot of media. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, New York Times, tons of different newspaper and blogs. We only see a very small slice of the world on our media. It's not just about China, either. We get tons of celebrity news, but not much about the world.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, you are part of the American media and you are telling us what is really going on. The old guard media is dying. People like you will replace them. Hang in there and keep it coming.
- Steve Olson
Chris: they should tell the American people the truth of why jobs are getting outsourced. It's not just about low cost anymore. Also, when you see the HUGE library and book store here in Shenzhen you see a people who value learning. THAT should be a wakeup call for Americans. Instead of talking about abortion or what Britney Spears ate for lunch they should be worried about how to compete on global scale.
- Robert Scoble
Wow, that IS an eye opener for at least This American!
- Carlton Hackett
India still has a long way to go before it can have the kind of influence economic China wields. India's got a great deal of problems that are not going to be easily solved with the type of gov't in place and the lack of leaders this country has. It amazes me how much India has progressed despite the gov't. The motto running this country that I've seen is "Greed is Good!"

The culture of anti-intellectualism which has seized control of the right in recent years is helping to undermine American competitiveness in the world. Most Americans are unable to make the connection between the rise of a George W. Bush and Sarah Palin in American politics and the decline of the American economy.

I watch almost no TV, but get my news online. One thing I really like about online news is that it is so easy to read what I want to, and skim past the stuff that doesn't interest me. Of course that works both ways. I've not the slightest interest in the celebrity bimbos, so skip that myself, but I could read that and nothing else. I check into a few UK sources too - BBC, Guardian, Telegraph. They give a more balanced world view, in my opinion, than domestic US media.
- Ian May
As someone who works everyday with an offshore Indian development team I'd agree with Pankaj's comments. We (the west) are still outsourcing based on cost but in many cases the offshore teams (particularly in India) aren't mature enough to deal with us. Some of the issues I see regularly are a shortage of good lead developers but loads of green ones, coupled with a culture that promotes teaching over learning.
- Andy Davies
This is a given. All Americans should NOT take our media with anything more than a grain of salt and read international media.
- Patricia
I doubt Americans have any less interest in learning. Their government doesn't pay for their bookstores (or wait, maybe they do - they're called Libraries - I've seen some pretty big ones), so they make wiser economic decisions.
- Jesse Stay
Visiting a bookstore in China is one of the scariest things I did when I lived over there. Not only are their wall after wall of business books (Inventory Management Guide vol. 6, Elements of Human Resources Management in low wage industries, etc) but there is a growing number of 'creative' works coming out. When the creative ideas developed 'in house' in China meet the factory powerhouses, oh holy crap. It won't just be Joe the factory guy looking for work...
- Andrew Leyden
Great insights Mr Scoble, Post China, I hope you do a detailed blog post and perhaps video or two on what you have learned/think
- JimmyJet
The story perpetuated by the media continues to be one of the Chinese government "controlling" everything, especially information, in China. However, I think the vast amount of information out there is simply uncontrollable, despite whatever firewalls are in place. Once they start to take that information and COLLABORATE, then they can truly INNOVATE, and that's what should give us pause...
- Chris Reichow
great that you recognize shortcomings of MSM take on China, but it's what sells. Also, bear in mind that your trip (although you met with perfect people for such a trip) was a "survey course" at best. It takes a ton of effort and time to get perspective on the place and to dig through what people in meetings are actually saying. The truth is probably somewhere in-between. I am personally so happy that you made the trip, and that you will hopefully be a fair-broker of China-related information out there.
- sage brennan
sage: yup, you can only get an incomplete picture, but I've gotten access to stuff that would blow your mind. Unfortunately I can't tell about a lot of it. But there is major disruption happening right in front of us. I'm working on a blog post now.
- Robert Scoble
Robert- i'm glad that you're seeing these things and blogging about it. it's good for others to see. @Sean Mcbride, can you elaborate on anti-intellectualism?
- Patricia
Patricia -- I was referencing a good deal of past discussion here with Robert Scoble and others about know-nothing (and anti-intellectual) trends in the Republican Party in recent years to attack and deride the coastal elites which are most responsible for generating the intellectual capital that is barely keeping America competitive with China, India, Europe and the rest of the world. A nation which ridicules intellectual achievement is heading for immense economic problems.
- Sean McBride
Unfortunately, it's the celebrity news that America in general is most interested in, so that's what kind of "news" media will break and cover. It's what gets ratings and makes money.
- Nathan Johns
I think the rest of the world is going to be disappointed when the amount of change does not meet expectations.
