Word to the wise gMail user: if you're using an external SMTP server to send mail, and your authentication information is incorrect, gMail will fail to send messages without giving an error message (while still moving them to "sent mail"). This is apparently a gigantic, known bug. http://www.google.com/support... & http://www.google.com/support...
I found out the hard way today. So make absolutely sure your SMTP auth info is correct and your mail is actually, definitely, positively being sent.

"Like many middle-agers, Domino's Pizza is undergoing a bit of cosmetic surgery. The world's largest pizza delivery chain, celebrating its 50th year in the business in 2010, announced today it will be entirely changing its core pizza recipe. "The fact is, we love our pizza, but as times change, so do consumer tastes," said Russell Weiner, Domino's chief marketing officer, in a statement. "We've created a pizza to reflect what consumers are looking for. We're not talking about a slightly altered version of our previous pizza. It's a completely new pizza reinvented from the crust up, and we are proud of it." After 18 months testing dozens of cheeses, 15 sauces and 50 crust-seasoning blends, Domino's decided on the new components of the pizza."
- RAPatton
from Bookmarklet
"The new crust will be seasoned with garlic, butter and parsley. While the new tomato sauce will be sweeter, made with a variety of herbs and a kick of red pepper. The cheese is shredded mozzarella, versus diced, with a hint of provolone."
- RAPatton
I feel like I'm reading the Onion here.

I had Domino's once, when i was like 12. I liked it. I had been meaning to try it again. I guess I better do it soon!
- Christopher Chung
I love all the melodrama in the comments. I don't know about other people, but I can't be bothered to be brand loyal to a pizza chain. There are so many pizza places out there why would you narrow focus like that? With that said, I've long disliked Domino's so I'm kinda interested to try the new recipe.
- James
Tomato sauce? What tomato sauce? They've been skimping on the sauce for years now.
- ronin
you shouldn't have put this pic here dude, it made me hungry :))
- sonsupernova
I'm wondering if they're testing this in my area -- the pizza crust definitely tasted a lot better the last time I ordered, and the sauce was a bit "richer." (They're the only online delivery place to my house.)
- Jennifer Dittrich
I don't think I've ever liked Domino's, so I'm hoping this change is for the better.
- Dan Hsiao
Are they still giving money to Operation Rescue and other anti-choice/right wing organizations? If so, I'll keep my money in my wallet, thanks.
- cecily
Yup, they're still run by Monaghan and as long as that's the case, it's like giving your $ to cavemen in mitres.
- Spidra Webster
Thanks for the correction, Will. I'd still rather give my $ to locally-owned pizzerias but obviously that's an individual choice.
- Spidra Webster
I was a driver for two years. Sweeter sauce? Bleh, it was too sweet for me already. Dominos is still my favorite of the giant chains though.
- Rob Haas
I'm with Rob. I haven't bought pizza from a major chain in probably four or five years and when I did, it was from Domino's (it was for the Seahawks/Steelers Superbowl). Before then, I had randomly ordered from Pizza Hut. Holy crap, it was palate blasphemy. I'm so grateful for Seattle's outstanding local pizza joints.
- Akiva Moskovitz
As hungry as I am after seeing that picture, we buy from mom-and-pop pizza places almost exclusively.

We live in a culture where the virtue of patience is often derided. If you're not doing anything right this very moment, you must be a slacker and worthless as a human being. Too bad the cure for many common illnesses really is the tincture of time. The universe gets the last laugh, I guess.
Opiates solve most problems, except maybe opiate-addiction. ;)

Andrew, there's this apocryphal story about an old school doc (he's old enough to have trained my dad in medicine) whom I used to take call with. He got a phone call from a long-time patient of his in his 80s, who was complaining about weakness and numbness on the right side of his body and difficulty with speech. The doc diagnosed him with a stroke and instructed him to take a few shots of whiskey, and to come see him in the morning if he survived. (Which he did.)
- Victor Ganata
Wow, that's... quite a story. I am both laughing and scared.
- Andrew C
Heh. I never had the balls to ask the guy if it was true, but knowing what I know about him, I could totally see him really doing it.
- Victor Ganata
I thought it was numbuness on the left side that indicated a stroke/heart attack. Can it be either side?
- Cristo
Thanks, Victor! Sadly, I saw my doctor and her assistant in the hallway a few hours ago (I had more infected PCs to clean) and didn't think to ask either of them anything. I've got amoxicillin, but the pharmacist recommended taking a Benadryl before bed.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Yup, Mark does have it. I think it was the sheep.
- Cristo
Bonus points for using "tincture", Vic. :D I'm excessively patient and it pisses people off all the time. I just don't get how getting riled up over anything is sensible or healthy. That being said, there was this time that I had strep throat for a month because I just figured I'd wait it out. On the plus side, I lost a lot of weight. On the downside, I damaged my hearing. Oops. O.O
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Yikes! Yeah, a month may be a little too long to wait. I guess there's such a thing as being *too* patient. When I was a med student, I met a guy who had crushing substernal chest pain radiating to his left arm, but he figured it wasn't *that* bad, and he decided to just wait it out until the morning. The only reason he made it to the hospital was because his wife came home and found him unconscious on the sofa. It was, in fact, a massive heart attack.
- Victor Ganata
LOL I shouldn't be laughing, but that's so typical of the men in my family. My dad had a hernia and waited two days to do anything about it because he just figured it was nothing important and it would go away on its own. Srsly. How my family has managed to stay alive this many generations is beyond me.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
It's utterly unsurprising to me that the details of a bunch of personal and professional emails are a little ugly. That's probably true for almost any of us. Who wouldn't, in their reasonably private communications, hurl a few barbs at people who've been relentlessly attacking your work and your person for years, tying you up with constant frivolous data requests, and in some cases (as with Wei-Chyung Wang) having people threaten to have you arrested for fraud? I'm glad I don't work in that field.
- Joel Webber
The Nature review raises a good point: What kind of support will scientists need to cope with frivolous FOIAs and other attempts to legislatively hinder their work?
- Mr. Gunn
Thanks for the Nature link, Hisham. The ending paragraph sums it up well, I think: "In the end, what the UEA e-mails really show is that scientists are human beings — and that unrelenting opposition to their work can goad them to the limits of tolerance, and tempt them to act in ways that undermine scientific values. Yet it is precisely in such circumstances that researchers should...

I'm mildly curious what the actual stats are. Services like those are never trustable. Of course the important question is what you're getting out of the service yourself.

“The mystery began when a blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain in the north of the country. It stopped mid-air, then began to move in circles. Within seconds a giant spiral had covered the entire sky. Then a green-blue beam of light shot out from its centre - lasting for ten to 12 minutes before disappearing completely. Onlookers describing it as 'like a big fireball that went around, with a great light around it' and 'a shooting star that spun around and around'... curiously, this appears to be unconnected with the aurora borealis, or northern lights, the natural magnetic phenomena that can often be viewed in that part of the world...”

OK, sorry. I'm a total dumbass. I stopped reading after the weekly totals...

3.74, which seems way off of everybody else's. I wonder what that says. I comment a lot more than I like.

0.66 - I tend to 'like' things without needing to comment further, I guess, and I notice I usually like the things upon which I comment. Well, frequently.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
.39 (2457/6242) I guess I don't comment much. I do 'like' a lot of things, it would seem.

So far: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81 ... (if you average 1 comment per like, you'd be 1.0 ... if you're 0.xx you might herd content more than discuss ... if you're whole numbers above 1 you may not 'like' much or discuss plenty or both)
- Micah Wittman
InPerpetualMotion(Gina k), I really liked this 'Like' of yours (in a series of pics, so I flickr fav'd it): http://friendfeed.com/e... and commented. Thanks!

A recent change in FF: now the comment count shows total number of comments (previously multiple comments in one thread only counted as one) http://friendfeed.com/e... so all the numbers above are from the old methodology....
- David HC Soul
My new ratio: 0.76 all time (old methodology .52).... this week 1.39
- David HC Soul
Looks like my ratio as flipped again (comments back to dominating again). Seems to match my own awareness I've lately been commenting without Liking (commenting is my inherent recognition of value to me and the additional Like is when it merits an extra bump to help discovery by others).
- Micah Wittman
Darn - 0.52. I guess I need to say why I like something a little more often :-) Liking this thread because I was wondering the same thing recently. Has anybody worked out the average from the numbers here? </islazy>

Andy, scroll upward and you'll see a couple calculations from before (January: Average: 1.27 | Median: 0.81)

Rick, you mean that face with glasses I photoshopped tint into with an apparently disembodied arm which is actually very much attached to my eldest son? It's mostly just me :)

Thanks, Michael. Yes, you have a rising tide of comment percentage (oh, wow, you were one of the originals from January - cool!)
- Micah Wittman
Yeah, that's a decent upward rise in comments, Nicholas.
- Micah Wittman
.6 (6,000/10,000) 3rd update - Now it's time to flip this on its head. My goal is to have (16,000/16,000) next time I post here. Regardless of what happens, I'm just looking forward to the next 10,000 comments, likes, posts, and new relationships I make here. It's all good!
- Michael Fidler
1.76 (7539/4290) My commenting habits haven't chanced much, but it felt like I clicked Like a lot less, and this ratio confirms that for me.
- Micah Wittman
.82 as of right now. edit: on January 8th it was 0.39 -- when I saw that, I decided to make more of an effort to comment. When I hit 10k "likes" I decided I wouldn't "like" anything else until I also had 10k comments.
- Bren -- Not Grinchy
Jimminy, I'm copyrighting every single number. It's kind of a honeypot ;) Actually, it was curiosity mostly, but I also hope to build a sampling (small and self-selecting as it may be) for anyone who might want to analyze it.

- Micah Wittman
0.89 (17818/19913) (Somebody better make a cool ass graph of all this data!)
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Micah.. I told you I take my likes seriously; ). You *might* want to ask (in a separate post) what percentage of likes were used to "bookmark" a post or save it for later VS actually "liking it". I NEVER used like for that.. but I did use a private group that if filled with my own topics (and comments)..
- Chris Myles
OK, so statistically, what ratio results in better interaction on FF?
- Jason Huebel
I don't think I could argue that any particular kind of ratio is "best", because if Lurkers like to Lurk and cultivate (via Likes) and the Chatty-ites love to chat, to pump out much many more comments than Likes, each can be happy and make for a great social experience.
- Micah Wittman
So I'm fairly balanced, it appears. I would imagine it's because I try to comment on every post I like. That's not always true, obviously. But mostly it is.
- Jason Huebel
Just clicking "Like" seems too easy. I feel like I should say something, too.
- Jason Huebel
wow, what a difference time makes, when i 1st posted on this thread, 6.43%, now = 1.25%, for a 5.18% difference, :o (and this is the earliest post to date i've recovered of my activity on ff)
- chaz2b
chaz, I think there's been a big fluctuation for most people (maybe not that much). This is the oldest post on which you commented that you've recovered?
- Micah Wittman
that was my third post... It's interesting to see how the number has changed. of course, I manipulated the number to a degree, because I stopped "liking" things for a while...
- Bren -- Not Grinchy
Bren, the other thing that can seriously throw off someone's stats is a feed that upon each item it imports adds a comment automatically.
- Micah Wittman
true. that can seriously inflate comment stats, of course. Then you have someone like RAPatton, who posts a gazillion comments, in part because of his playlist posts where he will list each song in a separate comment. I found, after this post in fact, that I tended to "like" things much more frequently than comment on them, that I was lurking instead of participating. I have changed the way I use ff rather considerably, and I think for the better.
- Bren -- Not Grinchy
Thanks Paola, Michael, Artemko, J. and Daniel!
