+1 for Audacity. Can't beat it for audio. For video, the newest Windows Movie Maker is suprisingly less-sucky than one might expect. For OSX video, iMovie is great, until you move up to Final Cut or Premiere. - Jason Griffey

I have/use/like Audacity fine...but it doesn't do fx especially well...certainly no auto-tune. I have Windows Movie Maker (vista version) and it is okay for what it does...but there's a lot it doesn't do. - David Rothman (☤)
