"Without insurance, John has been unable to get surgery or even help managing the pain. When he collapses or suffers particularly excruciating headaches, Esther rushes him to the emergency room of one hospital or another, but an E.R. can’t do much for him. One hospital has told them not to come back unless he gets insurance, they say."

DS, I think pre-nups might make sense when a billionaire takes a mere mortal as a spouse. So they can ensure that they're not being gold-dug. Probably not necessary for the average person.

no order: 1. sense of humor; 2. passion/attraction/appreciation for each other; 3. tolerance/understanding of each other's faults; 4. ability to communicate honestly with each other; 5. flexibility with each other...basically, what Ayse said.....LOLz!

@Kamilah: totally agreed. but too many people use them as an "I got mine!" escape clause when going into what they know is an ill-advised marriage. very sad all around. :(

Feeling contempt for your partner seems to be the death of marriage. What makes you feel contempt? Maybe when you are your partner give up on themselves and become something less? Becoming bitter? Becoming distant? Inability to deal with conflict? Start feeling your partner is bad? Defensiveness? Lack of trust?
- Todd Hoff
I only have 2: both have to drink the same kind of milk (2%, skim, whole, whatever), and both have to agree on which way the toilet papers off the role (I'm and over-the-top man myself).

Communication skills and respect for each other will keep two people together longer than anything else. Check out John Gottman's amazing research in this area to find out what will definitely break two people up.

Because Andy and I are both 2% and over-the-top toilet paper people people, we have been together for 9 years. Oh yeah, and the communication is also key...we communicate through FF, even though we are in the same room. ;)

When someone shows you who they are, believe them. They do not magically change because of a marriage license. Be honest with yourself and your partner. As everyone else said...Communication is key!

Humor, patience, forgiveness, humility, trust. And you can go a long way on a subset.
- Bruce Lewis
I think honest and thorough communication and understanding, and the ability to communicate creatively is more important than agreeing on something,
- David Lynch
The ability to argue with each other and get over it (even better, to actually accomplish something with it). A lot of people seem to have an idealistic view of happy couples never arguing, but arguing and disagreeing are actually very healthy parts of a good relationship. You just have to be able to make something good come out of it in the end.
- Curtiss Grymala
Of course, that's only a very small part of having a successful relationship. Also, the direction of the toilet paper roll (as Andy Bakun pointed out) is very important.

Communication is very important, but it doesn't matter how well you communicate, if there is no compromise in a relationship. There has to be a lot of mutual give and take, and that doesn't mean all giving by one and all taking by the other.

1. At least one common recreational activity (not sex). 2. At least some shared taste in music that will be listened to frequently. 3. Core beliefs on religion should be pretty similar - if she loves Jesus and you think Jesus is a joke or that her love of Him makes her the devil, things aren't likely to work out. 4. The woman in the relationship needs to listen. 5. The man in the relationship needs to listen.

There was a scene in Mad Men that they flipped the print on because Weiner wanted Betty to be on the right side (as you lie) of the bed. Because he felt it was unusual. Honestly, I never knew there was such a convention. I tend to want to be on whichever side is not against a wall.

I sleep on the right side in our current configuration.

"As you lie" - that mean as you lay there on your back? In that case I'm on the left.

My wife doesn't like sleeping on the side closer to the bathroom, so that pretty much dictates where I sleep. It's currently on the right, but has been on the left in the past.

Yeah Cristo, mine doesn't like sleeping closer to the entrance to the room. I guess she wants me to die first if someone tries to come in?

left side as you lie in it and I can't switch. Once while traveling we switched sides, it was bad!

i've slept on different sides depending on where we are living or visiting. i let my wife pick first cos it doesn't really matter to me...in our first apartment it was the left, in our house it's on the right, when we visit my wife's family i'm on the left side again.

Depends where the wall is. I can go days without peeing (course I then go into a public rest room and shoot the urinal off the wall), and most girls can only go minutes, so I'd take the wall.....BUT! There is the other school, that her at the wall, means I'm between her and any ninjas that may enter, which is preferable. I can sleep anywhere, so she can choose.

If I lay on my back in bed, I am on the right.but I have been on the left in the past. it depends how the room feels.

At home I'm on the left side as you're lying in bed. On the road I'm on whatever side doesn't have easy access to an outlet (Dave has to have it for his CPAP).
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Right side (as you lie in bed). Actually, the top right corner, curled up, on the pillows wedged against the headboard and the wall. The partner-in-crime is taller than the bed is long, so he sleeps diagonally. He also has to sleep on the outside edge because he always gets up to pee at least twice during the night. Also, the zombies can eat him first.

USA Today Dietitian Recommends McDonalds, KFC, Taco Bell And Burger King On Today Show [VIDEO] | Huffington Post - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009...
“While Ward and Lauer tout the value of eating fruit as a healthy snack, for the most part this dietitian throws her support behind the idea that processed fast food, filled with additives, preservatives and factory farmed meat is good for us, as long as it doesn't exceed a certain number of calories...”
- Anthony Citrano
from Bookmarklet
I'm not sure why I would want to watch this video.
- David Lynch
I admit, I'm not an expert ... but it seems a bit odd to focus purely on calories and not on saturated fat?
- dkb
@dkb: Aside from food purity/quality, I actually think we don't focus on simple carbs/sugars enough. That's what's killing us, not calories nor saturated fat.
- Anthony Citrano
Fair enough .... did you find the report strange that it only focused on calories?
- dkb
I'm a fan of Taco Bell. I could live on Baja Chalupas. (my genes will allow that.)
- Gus
@dkb: I found the calorie-focus annoying but not strange, no. But that's because I'm a bit cynical when it comes to mainstream media's ability to get things right (including, generally, their choice of “experts”) - or their collective ability to look forward rather than backward. What I found a bit stranger of course was her casual acceptance of crapfood as if it were equal to other sources of nutrition and a perfectly fine meal.
- Anthony Citrano
But this is just it, isn't it? They chose that woman who -- and I'm sure she's a lovely person -- all but gave the entire nation a free pass to eat junk food and feel good about it. So, I have to ask: is this just one nutritionist trying to make a buck, or (more worryingly) is it the influence of corporate 'partners' on the national debate?
- dkb
@dkb: they already have a free pass, they didn't need one from Ms. Ward.
- Anthony Citrano
You're right ... siiiigh .... <bangs head on table repeatedly>

"there is not sufficient research on the long-term effects of pesticides on human health," said Peter Melchett, policy director at the Soil Association.
- chaz2b
Kind of funny, I'm reading Silent Spring right now. I wouldn't call something without "sufficient research" as safe as anything else. I'd say it requires more research. lol
- Heather
Jumping the gun on any research is a cardinal sin. And organic food is no different....
- अभिषेक(Abhishek) Das
They didn't say it was "as safe as anything else". The wording is quite plain: "This study does not mean that people should not eat organic food." "What it shows is that there is little, if any, nutritional difference between organic and conventionally produced food and that there is no evidence of additional health benefits from eating organic food."
- Otto
It's the wording of the headline that bothers me "no better" when they really mean "no more nutritious" as it seems that's all they looked into.
- Heather
At least eating organic food still contributes to driving up the food prices for the worlds poor...
- Eivind
Of course it's no better, it's the same food it just hasn't been treated with pesticides. Organic is healthier from an environmental perspective not to mention ingesting poisonous chemicals.
- Cyndi Brigham
Well it sucks from the "fuck, I can't afford food because the Westerners want organic food now" perspective.
- Eivind
People eat organic food not because it's more nutritious, but because they want to avoid chemicals like pesticides and preservatives.
- Jeff Harbert
Yes, the price difference is not justified. I hope now they also publish research on how useless are extra supplements and vitamins pills. Just eat healthy and exercise!
- Giorgio Burlini
from iPhone
The price is driven up by the "trendiness" of organic, but it does cost more then typical farming. Most organic farms are small (some costs are divided by the smaller amount of product), certification can be difficult (no pesticides can have been used on the land for 5 years or something), and most crops must be tended more carefully. The prices have been coming down, but the popularity...

Generally our food tastes like crap, people are obese, and paying for doctor bills, instead of good food. It is time for the food industry to go down, not organics.

Buy local food (as local as possible) in season. It tastes better and is more nutritious.

Is local food more nutritious everywhere?
- Eivind
Eivind, local food usually means small (usually more sustainable) farm grown, not industrial crap, it's fresher too, thats the gist of that to my limited understanding.
- David Lynch
I think this is important so I'll be boorish and copy a comment from another thread...The key phrase is this: "there were a small number of differences in nutrition between organic and conventionally produced food but not large enough to be of any public health relevance." This is a population statistic, not in anyway a prediction of how you as an individual will react. For an...

Todd, the language of the review is generic, and the news bite is further misleading and false. It is not our job to defend it. There is research counter to this, so it seems an outright lie.
- David Lynch
@Eivind- Locally grown food IS healthier. Produce grown in South America is picked before it ripens, so that during the shipping process it will finish looking ready and sweetening/softening up. No additional nutrients are added after it's picked, obviously. Locally grown food can be picked much later in the ripening process, like weeks sometimes, and gets a good portion of nutrients in that time.
- Heather
If nutritional value is the way to rate it, then frozen fruits and vegetables are the best, organic or not. They are frozen almost immediately after harvest, preserving the nutrients far better than in fresh produce, that loses nutrients the longer it sits around. Yes, locally grown is more nutritious than something imported from another country when we are talking about fresh produce,...

Just teasing...I tend to archive the stuff that I might need for later. Toss the attachments in Evernote. Delete the junkmail. And toss a copy of the whole shebang into Thunderbird for good measure. Perhaps this is overkill.

Don't delete or archive, there's room to spare, spam gets deleted once a month automatically. My inbox is a handy reference that goes back quite a few years. If mail is unread - that is actionable.
- Chris Loft
Christ Loft - Exactly right. What exactly is the point of Archive?
- Matthew DeVries
@Matthew DeVries: I use the Archive so that I can keep my inbox clean. Plus, if you use labels it's like having a very configurable filing cabinet. The search function gets better as your archive grows. I'm amazed how much stuff is in emails that I'd have probably forgotten if I'd not categorized/labeled and stored them away. As to the original question here: I delete anything that...

The point for me is to have access to everything if I need it, but not have it clutter up my inbox. If I want to see everything I can click on All Mail or I can search if I need something specific. My inbox is just for recent items. It's not the only way to do it, but it's my way.
- Tony, Paradox of FF
James - but I found the search function works well just on the inbox, are you saying it gets further processed whence it gets into the archive?
- Matthew DeVries
@Matthew DeVries: No; I just find no need to keep it all in the inbox when I have search or the option to display "All Mail". I like to be able to take in my whole inbox at a glance. It helps me put the initial focus on what I want. The archive is, for me, just that.
- James (!?)
archive all the time. I don't delete unless I feel like it's ABSOLUTELY worthless (which usually comes down to spam). For me, unread = to read, in inbox = to do, archive = everything else, except: deleted: spam and completely worthless emails. I have set up a bunch of labels and filters for finding stuff, plus the search is pretty powerful, so I don't really feel the need to keep things in my inbox at all anymore.
- Chieze Okoye
Archive, what's the point in deleting?
- Kol Tregaskes
Default is archive. I only delete stuff that's truly junk
- Andre P. Siregar
Both. I delete spam and advertisement, but archive the conversations with my real contacts.
- Brome
+1 neither, I mark something as spam occasionally(for the benefit of others). I am a little perplexed why anyone would waste time deleting or 'archiving' (hiding from 'inbox' and making visible only under 'all mail'). Do people do this just because they are neat freaks or does it serve some other purpose??
- David Lynch
I never delete. In fact I set up IMAP and uploaded 10 years of email to it and still have a 90% storage. I never delete spam either, as long as I dont see it it can accumulate all it wants (not sure if it helps Google's filters either way).
- John Hardy
Service updates or notifications get filtered into alternate Inboxes, read and then deleted. Everything else going into the inbox is read and then archived.

- Deepak Singh
I like the fact that your new monitor is not Apple Cinema. ;)
- Pawel Szczesny
30" is a lot more optimal, you can arrange 2 windows with some reasonable sizes next to each other. And there is nothing wrong with Apple Cinema, it's just a little bit pricey ;-) Personally, I have 24" HP LP2465 and 1 Leopard's space (1920 x 1200) is often too big for 1 window and too small for two of them :/
- Piotr Byzia
I am a little space constrained so have to go with the 23" for now, especially since I don't use the monitor all that often. Will open up the macbook pro when I need the extra screen estate.. The cinema is definitely a superior monitor, but it's out of budget especially for the amount of use I'd give it, plus I am doing doing graphics heavy work.
