OMG I can't believe Bill Gates just released a swarm of mosquitos into the crowd at TED, sez "not only poor ppl should experience this!" WOW
I know! I just wonder if they were disease ridden! - Clay Newton
I saw the tweets about this, but I thought they were figurative, not real. Holy cow. - Gregory Pittman from twhirl
Sorry... I grew up in Minnesota - big deal 40 or 50 mosquitoes. - Brian Roy
Brilliant! - Patricia
Zol. - ralphsaunders from twhirl
What's the point?! - `aziz´ Alihan ÇETİN
Alihan: he was trying to get people to care about mosquitos, which spread disease around the world. - Robert Scoble
Somebody should have sprayed some insecticide, and explained how that could help the situation. Oh goodness the drama. - Spencer
there is great fix for those things, it's called DDT - Christian Burns
Mosquitos carry all kinds of diseases..I guess he wants to unload his riches in the courts too - Bwana ☠
DDT shouldn't be used for human reproduction. For every study on DDT, there is another that refutes it. - Robert Hafer
The simplest solution for malaria are bed nets. Just providing bed nets to all the kids in malarial zones would drastically cut down on incidents of the disease. - Alex Scoble
There are also people like me who never get bit by the nasty critters. Maybe a little genetic defacement is in order? - Todd Hoff
Lindsey - I mean DDT is no substitute for Viagra. - Robert Hafer
Please tell me there is video. - Sonya Smith
Sonya: all TED Talks are recorded, but the videos usually come out over the next year at http://www.ted.com/ - Robert Scoble
He has the ultimate experience in the distribution of bugs. A master indeed :-) Now available to nearly all. Perhaps later in a $150 computer. Couldn't resist. But I agree that his global efforts in health are exceptional. - iSteeve
Gates Guerrilla Theater how outside the box is that? Have to admit that wow my respect just went up for him. - Phil Boiarski
Alex: spot on. DDT is nothing to mess with. Lindsey you are correct. It belongs to the organo-chlorines class of chemicals and these are known endocrine disruptors. That and other organo-chlorines are responsible for hermaphroditic offspring in large species such as alligators. It is lazy and violent solution to situation. Mosquito netting does work. - Melanie Reed
Lindsey - I wouldn't know anything about tiny penises. :) - Robert Hafer
What an asshole - Dave Winer
Bill has been getting spectacularly bad advice on how to behave in public for some time now... remember the Seinfeld 'shoe' shtick? - Chris Gulker
Alex got it spot on earlier.... Mosquito Nets are perhaps the cheapest and most effective intervention to improving health in these regions. Malaria is the number one killer of Refugees in Africa (women and children are especially at risk of infection) .... the cost of a net is a couple dollars....even counting distribution costs etc. a net can be provided where and when its needed (just before breeding season) for about $10 per person.... Nothing but Nets Campaign...http://www.nothingbutnets.net/ - David HC Soul
On another front, in September Gates announced that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation would provide $168.7 million to the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative to help develop a vaccine for the deadly disease. .... prevention and cure....both should be tackled, but only one (Nets) gives immediate results. - David HC Soul

I'm sitting with @techcrunch (Mike Arrington) and he said that in Germany someone spit in his face and ran off today. Unbelieveable.
Wow, the person could've had the decency to tell him why, if he was going to commit such an act - Shevonne
UNbelievable! - Sampad Swain
Does Arrington speak German? - Ken Sheppardson
oh how horrible...trying not to laugh.... - Erin @queenofspain
Did that surprise Michael after his anti-European comments last year? (Not that I condone the behavior) - Robert Brady
I'd say this is very strange. Who would have a reason to do someting like this? - Donald Townsend from twhirl
odd. - Thomas Hawk
Wow... Apologizing for my compatriots! This is not only weird but disgusting. Feeling somewhat ashamed... - Jens
@Robert What anti-European comments did he make? - Shevonne
I guess we have some work to do in Europe re-establishing our reputation. Still, that's boorish. - Francine Hardaway
must have been a Scoble fan who didn't like Arrington's bullying intervention ??? - Adrian
What's German for 'Friend Feed' - maybe a mix up over translation? (sry to kid, it's awful really) - David Ing
wonder if they saw this voting opportunity http://news.cnet.com/8301-17... - Richard Binhammer
Possibly the guy owns a startup and Michael treated him, well, how Michael usually treats people? - MVB (Grinch of FF)
I've seen that in German adult films. I think it's a good thing. :P - timedalkat from twhirl
he's famous he has to expect stalkers - Thomas Power
He obviously forgot to invite the guy to TechCrunch 50. - Michael Forian
Can we get some more context, please? This sounds like something that might kick off a huge stink, but I'd like to know why that happened. Was the guy even german? Did they talk before? Just strange.... - Frank Koehntopp
Maybe they French Kiss differently in Germany :O - Scott W.
maybe he spat first or even worse - Bob Sonin
I'm sure that's it. - Ken Sheppardson
Seriously, people are arguing that this might have been an OK thing to do??? - Jason Green from twhirl
This is one of those situations where it is morally acceptable (and should be legally acceptable) to beat the stuffing out of someone. - Dean Rodgers from twhirl
This is not okay and is disgusting - Darren Heydon
highly disturbing. - Orli Yakuel
I think there is a relationship between this and Mike's post on Techcrunch about European Startups at LeWeb - Ahmed from twhirl
Oh, it's just the latest fad in Germany. Considered an honor. It's when they don't spit on you that you need to worry. - Kevin Leroux
Sad. Just plain sad. - Parth Awasthi
That happened to me in Tokyo. In a bar a Japanese guy kept referring to me as Yankee. I told him that he should use that word carefully cause some Americans take offense. He replied: "I know!" Then he spit in my face. But that was in 1972. - Tokyo Dan from twhirl
@ScottBourne you got me wrong here - I'm afraid Scoble's post sounds like the guy was german, when from Mike's original post it's pretty clear it might have been anyone. He happened to be in germany at the time, but the guy spitting may have been from any place in the world. I'm *not* condoning this by any means - I have the highest respect for Mike, and even if you don't, personal attacks are NEVER justified. - Frank Koehntopp
Just proves that society today is breaking down no matter which country you are in. What ever happened to "respect for others/elders". - Chris Wright from twhirl
I think it was uncalled for. Mike has never assaulted anyone. We all know he's the sort of person to just shrug these things off. So the fact that he's having to take time away from the Job he loves, means this has obviously affected him in a big way. Can't believe the guy ran away, what a coward. - Marcus Beagley
Getting spat on is utterly uncalled for. Its ridiculous. Getting threats against one's life, is ridiculous. I have a response of sorts...well, some thoughts, so to speak - http://www.bytebot.net/blog... - Colin Charles from twhirl
Next thing these goddam Foreigners will be Throwing Shoes at President Bush!! - Billy Warhol
It's disgusting but there are worse things than being spat on...verbal abuse in a public forum is much worse (speaking as someone who has experienced both). You can wipe spit off (me: it was from a Bush supporter) but harsh, unnecessarily mean words can leave lasting scars. - Liz
Billy, that's "former president Bush", as I'm sure you know. - Mr. Gunn
Not cool. No one desrves that treatment. The coward who did it should speak up. Tell Mike not to let the turkeys and the idiots get him down. - David Parmet from twhirl
Mike did wait till he got to Davos to tell this story, many bloggers were at DLD why didn't someone else write about this two day ago? - paul mooney
Paul: it happened yesterday morning, then he had to leave to come to Davos. He wanted to take some time to consider it. Often we can't write about things that happen to us the minute they happen. - Robert Scoble
he twitted it (neologism in action here). he did. - Marc Brandsma
maybe he was Francesco Totti :) - v per vitzbank
The blogger should not become the story - paul mooney
Please extent to Mike my love, sympathy and good wishes. No one deserves that kind of treatment. - Francine Hardaway
thought: will the rush to defend Mike equal the rush to defend Kathy? Or has Mike made himself an unsympathetic persona? Clearly no one should be physically assaulted or bullied out of blogging or work...but will the uproar be as big? Will there be a rally to his side? - Erin @queenofspain
Inexcusable! Whether Mike is perceived as nice or not is no basis for physical assault and insult. This is ugly, plain and simple. - susan mernit
He probably didn't deserve to get spat on (IMO very few people do), but doesn't his letter make TechCrunch sound like it's a wholesome site full of journalistic integrity? He's not taking any blame here? Maybe his time off will give him time to think about how things got to this point. - Paul Reynolds
Wow that is RUDE and cowardly to run off like that... what a jerk! What is astounding is that the individual did not express WHY he had such disdain for Arrington.... totally makes no sense - Susan Beebe
Wow ... while TC and Arrington may "push" their views, spitting, threats and the like are inexcusable. Mike, I am sorry you are going through this. I hope the rest of us are adults and know how to behave. - Darren
Reminds me of the whole "pie-in-the-face" mess that happened to Bill Gates a few years back... - Enrique Gutierrez from twhirl
Maybe he miss-spat... - Susan
im not saying its right to do what this guy did, but it makes you think about what to say on your blogs and public. i remember a story (or two) where someone hunted down and attacked a person from the net for stupid comments on a message board... - Terry O'Fee
Terry Techcrunch doesn't call any individual/company. Its there to simple promote/discuss startups and other web 2.0 companies who normally wouldn't get mainstream media attention. - Nicholas James

Boy scouts? Groan! - JazJaz
THINK OF THE CHILDREN! Great. The Government wants to protect us from predators who wish to take clandestine pictures of my kids, but the same government doesn't seem to think twice about destroying the enviroment or saddling our kids with crushing debt. - stretta from twhirl
Peter King is a neanderthal. The worst kind of US Right or Wrong GOPer. Just a fool. Just ignore him and he'll move onto another issue... - David Parmet from twhirl
I hate how idiots like this guy give all us "right-wingers" a bad name and demonstrate why the "left-right" dichotomy is bullshit. (Well, even 2-dimensional views of politics are poor; I prefer the 3-D model myself.) - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
If the government can mandate how much gas your car can use per mile, why can't they mandate the noises your phone makes? - Craig Eddy
The US economy is imploding and this is what we are doing in Congress? - Will Cragoe
Looks like another form of filibustering: putting laws up for vote with the only goal to usurp the house's and/or senate's time. It's disgusting. - Rene Wirtz
I tried to email him a link to my post but the emailing form on his website seemed to be out of order. Gotta get someone in there to fix that thing. - Thomas Hawk
What are you saying Thomas, that the good representitave is running a little behind with his use of technology? - Rene Wirtz
Love the comments on this from slashdot.org: '...then how about the CCTV's all making a noise when they photograph everyone. If they want everyone to respect their law, they should lead by example and prevent their CCTVs from filming without people knowing.' '...From a loudspeaker next to the camera: "Fear not citizen, you are being filmed for your own protection. Be Well."' - Glenn Batuyong
+1 for Glenn. - Thomas Hawk
"This will weaken our war on terror by blowing the cover of anti-terrorist agents who are photographing suspected evildoers!" i'm just kidding of course but as you can see it's pretty easy to build an argument against this using the right-wing's favorite talking points... - Glenn Batuyong

congrats! aviary.com is out of private beta :) it's a sweet online photo editing application!
I like aviary. Became a supporting paying user even though I am not capable of doing anything of quality, because I want to see them do all these apps they are planning. And it'll be nice to have access to that stuff occasionally without wasting disk space. - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Robert Scoble
Why @techcrunch is playing hardball with PR: Could be that several CEOs have told me that Twitter is getting them more hits than TechCrunch.
And these same CEOs tell me that FriendFeed is coming up fast and is #3. They tell me all other blogs bring far less than these three sources. - Robert Scoble
Whoever breaks news first on Twitter gets the credit now, they tell me. - Robert Scoble
Thanks God! At last truth happened - directeur
Twitter news sources now validated by mainstream? - http://andrew-long.name
When you want the exclusive news like TC wants, it's a perfect storm that Mike posted. Now he gets exactly what he wants. Great power play move. - Rex
Watch out directeur, I'm going to break your news (he just showed me something which is most cool). - Robert Scoble
I wonder if we'll start to see embargos on news that gets sent to popular twitter users before they tweet it... - Cory OBrien
Cory: I'm holding directeur's news until he Tweets it himself. - Robert Scoble
interesting - in my post just now i said exactly what you just said - let me add your twitter comment to my post - http://www.centernetworks.com/arringt... - Allen Stern
TechCrunch is a PR Bot, you'll get differend points of view from Twitter - paul mooney
Also, it's a little unfair to compare Twitter to individual blogs, b/c Twitter is an aggregator of all different writers and their communities. To compare apples to apples, you'd have to look at Twitter compared to every blog as one. - Cory OBrien
techcrunch built it's popular blog on the good old journalistic standby of being first and being prolific, not on deep thorough analysis. If your job is to be first then embargo's are just an impediment and risk someone else being first. Startups need to realize that being covered on techcrunch is much less important than good technology and a solid business model, that will get everyone talking about you in this ocean of mediocre technology plays, businesses need business model and strategy to win - karl
Haven't we all seen this coming? I remember this being talked about a year ago. With more users, it will only become more obvious. - Shawn Kirsch
I wonder when Friendfeed will move ahead of Twitter. Within a year? - Sean McBride
Mike's entire business model is built on controversy. We get at least one a week. He's good at what he does, but if he pisses off too many people, he may regret it. - David Semeria
Robert, thanks a lot! :) You knew how I could ninja-kill people, and you respected the samuraï in me! I appreciate this :) - directeur
Mike's been pissed off ever since he found that his particular brand of BS doesn't wash in Europe. @karl +1 I'm invested in one such. Never been on TC, no desire to go there and have our servers crushed for a day to the detriment of customers. - Dennis Howlett
What if Twitter assigned authority to users based on several factors, then you could watch news break and be able to tell if it was coming from reliable sources. - Kelly Johns
Doesn't the use of twitter democratize weather an item is newsworthy or not? Newsworthy items rise through the system organically and are editorialized by the many and not the few. - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
Old School: PR embargos, mass distribution, voicemails and Word docs; New School: Concise writing, great multimedia content, and open doors (transparency) and http://pitchengine.com - Jason Kintzler
@Kelly Johns That's an intriguing thought. - Shawn Kirsch
Will one source replace another, or will all sources complement each other? TechCrunch still has a wide readership. So does the Wall Street Journal. - Ed Moltzen
I suspect we'll see TechCrunch peter out in the next couple of years. Why subscribe to it, when you can just use Techmeme to filter it and get the few worthwhile stories per week out of the dozens? I personally find that I am getting a lot more info from Twitter, and FF, than from the big tech blogs. - Bruce Keener
Why? Attention seeking. Why else. - Michael Krigsman
@Dennis Howlett word, yeah, it's an illusion that somehow your biz will take off if it get's coverage on techcrunch. You will get a lot of feedback via techcrunch comments, and some traffic but that will not sustain a business. A business model that creates value and attracts new customers is the winning formula and plenty of people want to write about that :-) - karl
it's a great way of getting news out a lot quicker than the normal blog, usually because it's easier to write a couple of sentences than an actual well written blog. people like their news fast, simple and easy these days. also, i don't like this "i twittered first! this is my story!" BS. isn't the whole point of twitter and friendfeed to get the news out there, not for the ego? - Terry O'Fee
As Richard mentions, the point of an embargo is to give a journalist time to prepare, ideally as recognition of their expertise and authority in the field. PR firms who send mass embargoed releases to writers with whom they don't have a relationship miss the point, but of course they're also missing the point when they spam and pester. As Twitter - or even RSS - becomes more common and people can get a direct line to news they want, this won't be an issue. And outlets like TechCrunch will lose relevance. - David B. Thomas
this does remind me of pitchengine.com - digg for news - Susan Beebe
Interesting take, but I'd be surprised if that's it. Arrington just wants more exclusives, plain and simple. Exclusives drive more traffic, and there's not a huge amount of value in writing up every story when 20 other sites are doing the same thing. Even if they lose 50% of incoming stories, but get a 10% rise in exclusives, it will more than compensate for any loss.... - Duncan Riley
Duncan: TechCrunch is going to lose more and more exclusives to Twitter and FriendFeed, based on what startup CEO's are telling me. You probably are right, though, that TechCrunch will win some by doing this. - Robert Scoble
Getting TC'd is only about 15k hits over three days. Really not that big a deal, it's more for the general pr. - Alex Wilhelm (FF BLOWS)

sigh. I vote we now have a national discussion about how abstinence only education doesn't work. :O
I agree with you. Maybe now they'll pay attention even though the stats have already been there. - Anna Lynn M.
so one prominent anecdotal instance proves it? - Jeff Quinton
One prominent anedotal instance allows it possibly be discussed seriously, with the years of data Anna eluded to as further ammo. - Michael W. May from twhirl
Jeff - the pregnancy rates since abstinence education began is proof enough. - cecily
It's difficult to imagine how anyone would ever think it WOULD work. There's a fine line, though, between teaching kids responsible sex ed and telling em all "Play ball!" It's a LOT easier to advocate abstinence education. It makes everything black and white. - Chrimmus Tad
yeah, but that's expecting people with preconceived biases to discuss it seriously without it degrading - not promising - Jeff Quinton
Cecily: It may be a fact that pregancy rates are up. That does not prove anstinence education is the cause. That is your opinion. My opinion is we have allowed casual sex to become to much of an excepted activity. - ChiliMac from twhirl
Agreed Jeff. - Chrimmus Tad
@ChiliMac - I would venture that the number of unmarried people who have have sex has not changed with the advent of abstinance education or acceptance of casual sex, but the access to birth control methods has (it's a stigma, obviously for the abstinence camp). Less birth control means more pregnancies with the same number of people having sex. - Fa La La La Lindsay
I'd have to agree with Lindsay. It just makes plain sense that if you teach abstinence only and leave out the parts about safe use of birth control that the kids who are going to experiment anyways will end up having a higher pregnancy rate than the kids who learn about safe sex. - Chrimmus Tad
My point, Jeff, is her mother is a big pusher of Abstinence only. Her home life just became political. - Erin @queenofspain

davewiner lecturing tech blogosphere about grownups is laughable.
here we go again. - Thomas Hawk
I don't know if Steve actually said this, or if he deleted it after saying it. It's not on his Twitter account. He was one of the people I'd like to be friends with again, but I won't as long as he's helping promote the pain. If this is real, I can see that isn't likely to happen too soon. - Dave Winer
when did the H get dropped from his last name? - Jeff Quinton
Just FYI, I use the block command in FriendFeed, liberally. When someone is abusive, I block them without a second thought. - Dave Winer
You guys just need to meet face-to-face and hug it out. - Mike Doeff
this crap needs to stop already gees... ok... guys... go out for a drink together and deal with it - Susan Beebe
Susan the crap about the crap having to stop has to stop already! (That's satire, protected under the First Amendment.) Seriously, the people who get in the middle and tell people to shut up are being ridiculous and self-contradictory. If your goal is silence, then start with yourself and STFU. - Dave Winer
It seems to me that he wasn't saying that it's laughable that you're lecturing tech blogosphere about grownups, but rather sharing with you the opinion that it's laughable for anyone to do it. I hope that helps. - Richard Shulman
Thomas +1 - Mark Forman
Look the idiot who started this crap is Loren Feldman! He criticizes people but when someone criticizes him he blocks them. Fuck Loren and the pot he shits in. Maybe he is blogging from under the bridge right now juiced in to some police Wi-Fi. LMAO - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Oh and Gilmore tell Loren he can suck my Dick. If I go after him, he will be history. Just ask Mat Cutts and Adam Lasnik. I do not forget and I do not give up. And I can afford it. It is my hobby! lol - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
nice tip Dave Winer. should we all block Dave then :D - DC Crowley from twhirl
dave simply blocks ppl for disagreeing with him, not only for being abusive. for someone who's that abrasive and, ahem, vocal, it seems he has the thinnest skin around. just an observation. maybe we can take a break from the antagonism for a while. dunno. sometimes i too get focused on being adversarial, even if it's just for the sake of humor. - Brooks Bayne
Wolfsbayne, if you're so smart -- why haven't I blocked you? - Dave Winer
be very careful @stevegillmor... @DaveWiner might unblock you! ;-) - Jason Calacanis
@davewiner you did block me on twitter simply for telling you that "your berkeley was showing" in response to one of your political rants. http://twitter.com/wolfsba... - Brooks Bayne
Chris Brogan
Think I figured out my elevator pitch. 'I help people deal with what comes next today.'
I once introduced Chris as one of the world's leading experts on social networking to a potential business partner. I thought that was a good pitch! - Louis Gray
