Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though.

I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. I also wanted to keep my day to day social activity distinct from the targeted information and discussion I use FF for.

i guess congrats are in order, but I'm going to now go and remove everything I have that feeds into FF, and I have to ask -- do I have any rights over my archive? I have a private feed, and I have no interest in offering up my lifestream to the FaceBook data-miners. *checks date*. Damn .. not April 1st, must be for real. While I'm happy for the FF team, since I guess this is what they wanted (congrats guys!), I can't help but think this is the beginning of the end for a great service and a vibrant community. There are reasons I don't spend any time on Facebook and do spend lots of time on FF, and some kind of "FF integrated into Facebook" just won't cut it. I hope this service will live on for at least a few more years.

Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P

I also hate facebook, not because of their silly quizzes and pokes, but because I suspect they would like to maintain massive user base as the determining factor in choosing a social network. I would love to switch to orkut as I use so many other google services, but I can't because nobody else does. That should not be my criteria.... Facebook was looking to implement more of a public twitter-style thing, but a lot of users didn't like that it seemed to be making private conversations more public. If they could keep them separate in some ways, this could solve that. This could be the public facing side of Facebook. I think its a good thing.

imho, it's good for many reasons, both for FF and FB. Better integration, content based advertising (based on comments, discussion topics and demographics on FB account) etc. FB successfully established a networking platform, yet, still couldn't be able to establish a healthy conversation platform (look for the useless fan pages + groups). FF would do it. It may also be the end of forum culture, and so...

congrats to FriendFeed! facebook tried to mimic the service with real-time profile updates but the FF technology is apparently too good and UI too smooth that they had to buy it! I'd imagine facebook integrates the technology without using the Friendfeed name so as not to corrupt the native FF community with n00bs

if FB bought FF is because they want to make money out of it. Therefore even if they keep it separate they will put ads on FF. But what I am most scared about is the proliferation of stupid applications and silly games with the only puprose of doing aggressive marketing.

That's an old Pownce feature. Frienfeed doesn't support posting to a pre-defined list; you'd either have to DM them all at once, or get them to join a room.

Adam, I don't want to tackle the entire species, but I'm happy to work one superstition or one individual at a time. I advocate the heart of the scientific method: Ideas are tested by experiment. I assert that the idea here that celebrity deaths come in threes is easily disproved via evidence to the contrary. Once you define the terms (i.e., two week period with exactly three celebrity deaths) I can easily show you counter-evidence. Let's leave the 13th floor issue for another thread!

"You can only upload 3 audio files every day. Please try again later." Too bad because I was really just trying to see what files worked. .wav aint one of them. No audio notes from Evernote, iPhone, iProRecorder. I soooo want to love this but It's not doing what I need it to do. This feature needs to support some kind of multi photo post with a recording appended to the message. That should be right out of the box. Video needs to come right behind it. Music is cool but citizen journalism is even cooler.

I haven't tested this but, how exactly are you determining audio file types, just using the file extension. If so there is a work around with a simple file rename, an example would be if you change an .mp3 to a .pdf and let people rename it once it becomes local on their machine. EDIT: This workaround would also allow video to be transferred.

I ran the Men's Furnishings area at Robinson's (when there was a JW Robinson's) and men would call have us pick 5 shirts and 5 ties to go with a couple suits for a week long business trip. Almost everyone of them asked that we tie the tie and put it on the shirt so they could loosen it - and wear it without re-tieing the tie! My knot of choice? Half Windsor!

learned to do a four in hand myself after watching someone else do it. However, I detest ties - horrible things. Was forced to wear one thru school and when I started work. After the 4th time I caught it under my knee while crawling under desks I refused to wear one. When I did one of my vertical slice episodes last month where I dressed up as the spy from TF2 was the first time I had worn a tie since about 2002. No time for them soul sappers. Next up, abolition of the suit! ;)

I don't know what a Fish Hopper is, but I'll assume yes. IMG_0449 and IMG_0445 are images that could use more exposure.

Is there a difference in quality between adjusting the exposure on the camera vs. editing the picture with a tool like Picasa after the fact?

It's always better to get it right in-camera. In this case, you would avoid noise in the shadow detail becoming visible when you lighten it.

It's only the feature articles - the ones that have been properly vetted, redacted, agreed on and quality controlled (no half finished sentences and "more details needed" stuff) - from the source: "At present, there are 2,529 featured articles, of a total of 2,903,080 articles on the English Wikipedia." The full wikipedia would be 1000 times this, but most of it would be 25 line standard templates with "this article is a stump"

Alix- I was thinking the same thing. My childhood set of pedias in the 80s (that were from the 60s and 70s) stacked a lot higher than that. I'm more surprised that there are only 5,000 8.5 x 11 inch double sided pages of Wikipedia information. Seems low.

Not huge at all, even if it is only featured articles. Alix noted it looks smaller than book set remembered a kid and I agree. Now, if they printed all the smaller, cross referenced articles each with a page, it would be huge.
