Well it's got one feature that I've always wanted in FF, the @replies. It doesn't appear to work all the time but it's bloody useful when it does.
- Kol Tregaskes
What's wrong with FF's DM feature? Functions the same way. Oh, except not inline in replies, the thread has to start out being To the person.
- Stephen Mack
But that's a DM, it's not a reply to a specific user inside a public thread.
- Kol Tregaskes
Thomas Hawk, Louis Gray and Kol seem to be the biggest Buzz supporters from the FF crowd so far. That's the great thing about the world, everyone can have their own preferences. But Buzz frustrated me too much, I'm giving it a 60-day timeout.

A supporter yes. A full-time converted user, no. Need groups/rooms and filters.

It's barely a 1.0 product. If you like FriendFeed, Buzz makes sense. But FriendFeed is more customized and polished.
- Louis Gray
Louis, agree but I would say that Buzz has more potential for the obvious reasons. So it's something for the future.
- Kol Tregaskes
FF will not be improved unfortunately, not unless FB sell the product to someone who can develop it. FB don't seem to have the desire to put the FF team back on it. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
Agree on the Groups/Rooms and Filters. The similarities to FF make you wish to see them in Buzz but enjoying Buzz a lot

I love Buzz but I still think that FriendFeed is better, more powerful, and much easier to use - (not to mention the great community here too) ;]

it's also known as "public private initiatives" here in the UK - private companies bid for governmental contracts to provide the services, billed to the government. They're not that different. They are both nationalized healthcare systems. I lived in the UK for a couple of years. I have friends who love the NHS because it's simply there and provides a decent, basic level of service. I've also had people I know suffer and die because of sub-standard care (a tumor was misdiagnosed as a dragonfly bite). Nationalizing healthcare is not the silver bullet.

Most folks are not looking for a silver bullet. Right now, they'd be happy with plain ol' lead, as opposed to the blanks they have now.

I think alphaxion has the right idea. Nonprofits, not for-profit corporations. The latter corrupt the system.

Single payer advocates sometimes overstate the case, and I'm probably just as guilty of it as anyone. It's definitely not a silver bullet, just a vast improvement over the current clusterfuck of a system. Yes, I hope they lose their job, their house and their health insurance (and I don't mean it as viciously as it sounds), because only then will they find out that having UHC is actually a far better deal. nickreynolds: Prohibited by O2 from upgrading to new 3GS iPhone until next June :( But hey, just in time for next year's new iPhone! :/ - http://twitter.com/nickrey...
The annoying problem is that when you are due for an upgrade from O2 next June you go for the Iphone 2010 model and youre stuck then in an 18month contract with Apple releasing new phone on a 12 month cycle. You are then always skipping one version of the iphone because your contract precludes it :(
- David W
I see that O2 have now clarified the options available for existing Iphone 3G users - stay where you are; buy a Pay & Go phone and use your existing sim or Buy out your contract (usually 6 months)... I am not sure I want to enter into a long contract with O2 again so tactically I think I will have to wait until June next year to see if the Iphone 2010 is compelling enough to upgrade and even then will probably go Pay & Go to avoid taking out a long contract.

from Alert Thingy
yes absolutely. i am still using the original iPhone, which I have to say still works great for being two years old. I didn't see that much of an advantage to upgrading when the first 3G came out, but now there seems to be enough new features that it makes it worth it.
- Jennifer
@Jandy AT&T's upgrade policy is no different than any other cell carrier's policy, in making you wait 2 years before upgrading for a greatly reduced price. I am excited that they're subsidizing at all actually; when I bought my original iPhone there wasn't any subsidizing and I paid full-price *and* was locked into a 2-year contract. If you ask me, their policy now is a lot better than it was then.
- Jennifer
Just got my 3G for work going to try to upgrade. Not to fussed though.
- Jason Remnant
I would buy it now if I was upgrade eligible. Oh well, gotta wait until December. We'll see if it is a big deal. Personally I wouldn't want 3Gers to comfy, and get 'em while the upgrade itch is hot.

No. Like many others, I'm mid contract. I'd pay $299 for the update, but not $399 or $499 depending on the model.

upgrade price not worth it for features i get with quickpwn

Tyler - you are just flat out wrong. A jailbroken iPhone won't have: autofocus camera (of higher quality), builtin compass, be ready for next gen data networks (up to 7mps), have a faster processor & better battery. I'm upgrading from a 1st gen so the diff is big if I had a 3G it might be closer

- Martin Johnson
definitely not before the contract renewal is possible and who knows how I will feel about it then..
- David W
@Jennifer, I know, and I agree that the initial iPhone customers got screwed, too. But just because it's an industry standard doesn't mean I have to agree with it or like it. I haven't jailbroken because I was hoping to get a new handset with video support, but I may jailbreak instead in the meantime and pick up the new handset when my contract is up.
- Jandy
Planning to!! Features that are going to stay for a while from now. The problem in India is the price tag (31 & 36 grands). Looking forward to get one from the US. But then AT&T sucks there :O
- Praveen Vasudev
No - bad working out by o2 with regard to current 3g owners and the length of their contracts. I'm guessing they know hardcore Apple fans will buy out the remainder of their contract to get the new phone. That, I'm not going to do. I don't have £464 upfront to end my current contract and purchase the new handset.
- Charley M
It is really irritating me how much people are complaining about this. No one cared about their 2 year contract when the only thing to look forward to was a $30 flip phone. Maybe contracts are a dumb idea but that's the way it is. Get over it. You just received a subsidized phone a year ago. What makes you think you deserve one every single year? - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Unfortunately, I just bought two iPhone 3Gs....so I'm going to wait a while. It seems every time I purchase an Apple product, they drop the price soon thereafter. Which is okay -- since I'm willing to overpay for Apple products but not pay discount for anything Microsoft at this point.
- Curt Mercadante
Nope - N97 unlocked for me. Even at ~$600 it's cheaper than the Iphone. Plus better camera, physical keyboard, FM transmitter, etc etc
- Mark Zip
I've been waiting to buy an iPhone and plan to make the 3GS my first one.
- Herb Hernandez
I'm getting the new iPhone 3GS because I have been delaying my buy decision for new cellphone waiting for Apple to drops it's new iPhone
- Sebastiaan van den Akker
Glen++ I will whine about AT&T for many (MANY) other reasons, but this is not one of them.
- Mark Philpot
This is nothing new for AT&T. They have long punished existing users with inflated price for continued service (Be it, mobile/ land phone. DSL, DISH...whatever)
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
I don't mind staying with AT&T, and I haven't had issues with their service (aside from them keeping streaming video apps wifi only - if I'm near wifi, I usually have a computer, so wifi-only apps are fairly pointless). But why can't I sign a new two-year contact at the lower price, and they just add on the time I have left on my current contract to the end of it?
- Jandy
Glen: I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be more than happy to extend my current contract for two more years in exchange for the subsidized pricetag. If they'll play along with me, great. If not, then they *are* being idiots, and I've got every reason to complain.
- Roger Benningfield
It's business. Business profit motivation is often at odds with customer satisfaction. at&t know most iphone users are probably happy with their phones and many will want to upgrade. It makes perfect sense, at least from a bean-counter's perspective, to charge them more. Personally, i'll be dumping at&t the second the iphone is offered by other carriers.
- ·[▪_▪]·
Roger (and others), if you're willing to pay the early termination fee and then pay the new user charge, great, but what I'm hearing here and in other places is that current users want the new user price without paying for abrogating the contract they signed.
- Steve Lowe
Steve, I don't want to abrogate it, I want to add it to the new contract, creating a three-year and a bit contract from the new two-year one plus the one year and a bit I have left on my current one. At least, I'd like that as an option. Or is it an option and for some reason no one's talking about it?
- Jandy
Jandy, that's interesting, but what happens when the iPhone 4G (or whatever) comes out: do you end up with a 5- or 6-year contract with etf's running up to $500 or more? Also, you're the first person to mention adding on to their existing contract. No one else has mentioned that--that I've seen, anyway.
- Steve Lowe
IMO, this is a case of being annoyed that AT&T treats existing customers like this, but new customers get the red carpet rolled out. We don't get a reward for being loyal customers? At this point, since I don't have the money to upgrade right away anyway, I'm going to wait out the rest of my 2-year contract, however much is left, and then try to upgrade. If I still have to pay the overinflated upgrade price then, I'll be pretty pissed.
- Cheryl Jones
Cheryl, I would be too. The end-of-contract price and the new user price should be the same, I agree. And I don't know the deathstar's etf structure, but I've heard of some users who are finding it cheaper to pay up and just get a new phone.
- Steve Lowe
As far as I understand there will still be a rebate for the people with one year left of their contracts. This rebate will just be half the rebate new users get since you are only technically adding another year to your contract. If that is not logical and fair I don't know what is. If people wanted to change their phone every year and add more to it every year because a new and...

- Rasmus Lauridsen
There should be two options for existing customers. Extend your existing contract by two years (maybe there should be a ~3 maximum contract length) and an option to prorate the discount of the phone versus the contract remaining. In other words, a two year contract is worth a certain discount on the phone so my remaining one year is worth 1/2 that discount so give me 1/2 the discount new users get and let me get the new phone. It's fair and everyone can get what they want.
- ·[▪_▪]·
I agree that AT&T is right and reasonable to set it's pricing as it does (they actually do give an extra $100 to us < 1yr 3g buyers)... but i think that that it would have been wiser for them to try something more consumer friendly. Their exclusivity won't last for too much longer and they should want to get people locked into contracts extending out as long as possible as well as building up the good will they're burning with their MMS/tethering crap.
- felix
@·[▪_▪]· They pretty much do that now although how they calculate it doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Price of a 32GB 3GS is $699 with no discount. $299 for new subscribers or those not under contract. I'm currently almost a year into my 3G 2-year contract and my price is $499. A friend of mine who just got his 3G earlier this year, can also get it for $499.
- ronin
Everytime I read "screw you" I'm hearing Leo laporte say it :).
- Roberto Bonini
As I said earlier, I'd be happy to just extend my existing contract by two years. And here's the stupid thing for AT&T... if they lose exclusivity in a year or two, they'll lose me as a customer. I'm only on AT&T for the iPhone, and would switch in a second if the opportunity arose. They should be actively seeking to lock me in, not push me into waiting.
- Roger Benningfield
@robot, yeah, that's fair. Sounds like maybe they're doing something like the 1/2 discount. I think I'll still wait till my contract's up, though (hey, by then they'll probably have another new model out).
- Jandy
fuck AT&T for trying to wring more money out of me. no interest.

I'm confused about all the ire. The cheap prices for new or eligible customers are specifically because the subsidies get paid out over time during the contract. But after only one year, I can get a 3GS 32GB for $299 just as if I was a new customer (it's $499 if I buy it today, under one year with my current hardware). Surely if people want new hardware more frequently than once per...

- Tinfoil 2.0
Okay, how about this, then? How about we shift some of the blame for failing to properly manage consumer expectations to Apple? They should advertise the retail price of the hardware, not the subsidized price. Then people would be pleasantly surprised to be paying lower prices if they're eligible for a full or partial upgrade, rather than annoyed to find they're paying more than advertised.
- Jandy
+1 Jandy. There will always be a new product people want and it will come out faster than your contracts expire (subsidized or not). I don't really have a horse in this race since I got a 3G last Sept and am quite happy with it. I'll upgrade to the 3.0 OS and be happier. And when my contract expires, I might get the next version of the iPhone. Or not. If you want to be on the leading edge of technology, you have to be willing to pay the price.
