We do seem to be reaching a tipping point with ebooks and the ereaders out there - the next several months could see some new players like Apple in the frame but the issue for a lot of us will be how flexible will these systems be - some of the copyright/DRM options might make a lot of us wary about forking out for a ereader if it means our book library is locked into one solution... - David W

We tried to hire a Radiologist from Canada, sadly most are not board certified. Curious if we will now require less regulations if we go to Universal HC? - Janet
it's also known as "public private initiatives" here in the UK - private companies bid for governmental contracts to provide the services, billed to the government. The problem is that the private companies that win the services are there for the profit and so provide a piss poor level of service for the highest price possible. It gets even muddier when you look at the PPI system used... more... - alphaxion
They're not that different. They are both nationalized healthcare systems. I lived in the UK for a couple of years. I have friends who love the NHS because it's simply there and provides a decent, basic level of service. I've also had people I know suffer and die because of sub-standard care (a tumor was misdiagnosed as a dragonfly bite). Nationalizing healthcare is not the silver bullet. - Justin Whittaker
Most folks are not looking for a silver bullet. Right now, they'd be happy with plain ol' lead, as opposed to the blanks they have now. - Steven Perez from IM
I think alphaxion has the right idea. Nonprofits, not for-profit corporations. The latter corrupt the system. - Dennis Jernberg
Single payer advocates sometimes overstate the case, and I'm probably just as guilty of it as anyone. It's definitely not a silver bullet, just a vast improvement over the current clusterfuck of a system. I've never heard a UK or Canada horror story that compares to some of the more common disasters in the US. Misdiagnoses happen everywhere, as does delays in treatment. But I've never... more... - Eric P

aye, you won't hear people from the UK extol how the NHS is the pinnacle of health care and there's nothing wrong at all because, at the end of the day no system will ever be perfect - well, except in the minds of the really patriotic ;). But, for the majority of issues I'm glad it is here because without it I'd prolly have a dead sister (genetic retinablastoma) and a bankrupt me with... more... - alphaxion
I don't think anyone who has ever had significant dealings with the health care system in the U.S. really thinks everything is OK, but I guess some people in this country are so afraid of any change, they're willing to sabotage themselves to try and prevent it from happening. - Victor Ganata
That's the killer for me. How, especially if you've had ANY experience fighting with insurance companies, can one possibly argue that what we have now is better than something new? - Steven Perez from IM
This is one of the reasons why I am harsh in my comments to those people who are against UHC. Yes, I hope they lose their job, their house and their health insurance (and I don't mean it as viciously as it sounds), because only then will they find out that having UHC is actually a far better deal. If there's nothing wrong and you can afford your insurance premiums all is wine and roses,... more... - Rene Wirtz
@rene This is a point I raised with a few of the anti-UHC people on FF... Those who can afford healthcare won't ever see anything other than a bill for other peoples care until that access is stripped from them. These people don't get that health is a social issue and as such should be addressed in the same manner as other social items - I don't hear them bitching about paying for other people to use the police or roads... - alphaxion
I'm from the UK and pay for private health insurance to keep me out of the NHS's filthy hospitals. I dunno, food is pretty important for survival, and look what happens when the government provides that (famine).Seems to me there are two issues: basic ongoing health care, which could be provided pretty cheaply privately for a monthly fee and which wouldn't kill you if you couldn't... more... - Rob Fisher
There are all sorts of issues with getting a random scan for no good reason other than you just felt like it. It's really not a rational use of limited resources, but it is, I suppose, a good way to make a lot of money off of people who don't know any better. Full body scans for cash are totally available in the U.S. They tend to find lots of things that are abnormal, and then you end... more... - Victor Ganata

There appears to be an attitude by some (usually within the cosy protection of full Insurance) displaying a Scrooge-like view ("Are there are not still Workhouses?") that they shouldnt have to support those less fortunate than themselves - the NHS is a great institution in the UK which whilst not perfect offers Universal Health Care and one that the UK should fiercely defend and support. - David W

nickreynolds: Prohibited by O2 from upgrading to new 3GS iPhone until next June :( But hey, just in time for next year's new iPhone! :/ - http://twitter.com/nickrey...
The annoying problem is that when you are due for an upgrade from O2 next June you go for the Iphone 2010 model and youre stuck then in an 18month contract with Apple releasing new phone on a 12 month cycle. You are then always skipping one version of the iphone because your contract precludes it :( - David W

O2 UK iPhone 3G S pricing, plans revealed | iPhonefreak
I see that O2 have now clarified the options available for existing Iphone 3G users - stay where you are; buy a Pay & Go phone and use your existing sim or Buy out your contract (usually 6 months)... I am not sure I want to enter into a long contract with O2 again so tactically I think I will have to wait until June next year to see if the Iphone 2010 is compelling enough to upgrade and even then will probably go Pay & Go to avoid taking out a long contract. - David W from Bookmarklet

@answers Are you going to buy the new iPhone 3G S? Why or why not? M$1
I would if I didn't just switch to ATT in January. - Richard Leiter
I got my 3G in September, so I'm not sure what my options are for upgrade. But if it's $399 for the 3GS, I'll buy one. - Paul Ring

No, as it would cost me way too much now as I bought the 3G a year ago. Disappointed. :( - Steve de Mena

yes, but waiting for the Jul 11 anniversary when I bought it to make the switch. otherwise iphone 3G S will cost too much - Ernie Oporto from twhirl
Nope, because AT&T's non-qualified upgrade is too harsh. If I could upgrade the 3G I bought in January for $199, then I might consider it. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Nope. The UK upgrade path is crazy for current 3G owners. :( - Aaron Dyer from Alert Thingy
yes absolutely. i am still using the original iPhone, which I have to say still works great for being two years old. I didn't see that much of an advantage to upgrading when the first 3G came out, but now there seems to be enough new features that it makes it worth it. - Jennifer
@Jandy AT&T's upgrade policy is no different than any other cell carrier's policy, in making you wait 2 years before upgrading for a greatly reduced price. I am excited that they're subsidizing at all actually; when I bought my original iPhone there wasn't any subsidizing and I paid full-price *and* was locked into a 2-year contract. If you ask me, their policy now is a lot better than it was then. - Jennifer
Just got my 3G for work going to try to upgrade. Not to fussed though. - Jason Remnant
I would buy it now if I was upgrade eligible. Oh well, gotta wait until December. We'll see if it is a big deal. Personally I wouldn't want 3Gers to comfy, and get 'em while the upgrade itch is hot. - sailorj
No because they aren't available with Verizon :( - Adam Martin
No. Will wait for the next iphone when my two year contract comes up for renewal. iPhone 3GS features and price are not worth it for me. - Carlos
Yes. I have a first gen iPhone, the better battery life, autofocus camera, video, gps and compass are enough & being faster also - Shannon Clark
No. Like many others, I'm mid contract. I'd pay $299 for the update, but not $399 or $499 depending on the model. - Michael Groner
Nope - because I love my Pre. - Nation Hahn
upgrade price not worth it for features i get with quickpwn - Tyler Gillies from email
Tyler - you are just flat out wrong. A jailbroken iPhone won't have: autofocus camera (of higher quality), builtin compass, be ready for next gen data networks (up to 7mps), have a faster processor & better battery. I'm upgrading from a 1st gen so the diff is big if I had a 3G it might be closer - Shannon Clark
i was mostly using hyperbole. those features just aren't worth the upgrade price to me. - Tyler Gillies

Here in the UK if you have the existing Iphone 3G you probably have at least 6 months of contract to run - bit of a rollercoaster - June 19th then damn January 2010 :( - David W
Still no pricing here. T-Mobile haven't updated their tariffs, you can arrange to be notified on the 19th though... :-S - David Wright from twhirl
I preordered a 3GS last night from the online apple store. I still have a first ten phone, so thankfully I qualified for the lower pricing. - Beau Liening
Yes, but when I can get the subsidized price (December) - Martin Johnson
definitely not before the contract renewal is possible and who knows how I will feel about it then.. - David W
Probably not. iPhone 2g still works great for me. - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
@Jennifer, I know, and I agree that the initial iPhone customers got screwed, too. But just because it's an industry standard doesn't mean I have to agree with it or like it. I haven't jailbroken because I was hoping to get a new handset with video support, but I may jailbreak instead in the meantime and pick up the new handset when my contract is up. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Planning to!! Features that are going to stay for a while from now. The problem in India is the price tag (31 & 36 grands). Looking forward to get one from the US. But then AT&T sucks there :O - Praveen Vasudev

No - bad working out by o2 with regard to current 3g owners and the length of their contracts. I'm guessing they know hardcore Apple fans will buy out the remainder of their contract to get the new phone. That, I'm not going to do. I don't have £464 upfront to end my current contract and purchase the new handset. - Charlotte M
It is really irritating me how much people are complaining about this. No one cared about their 2 year contract when the only thing to look forward to was a $30 flip phone. Maybe contracts are a dumb idea but that's the way it is. Get over it. You just received a subsidized phone a year ago. What makes you think you deserve one every single year? It's nothing that they're doing to... more... - Jennifer

In 6 months or so. O2 have the same idiotic plan as AT&T. It would cost me a fortune to cancel and then sign a new contract. - Roberto Bonini

I can dial without a pinky... - Greg Birch
Nope. I just purchased my 3G in November. I'll wait and see what Apple comes up with in the next 18 months to replace mine when my contract expires. - Bryan Clark
Nope---happy with my 3g. - Kelly W.
AT&T sucks, and I am not willing to allow Apple to decide what applications can be put on my phone - Chad Albert
I like AT&T but, I sure don't like their iPhone plan. Might get me a G1 or another HTC product that will take android. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Unfortunately, I just bought two iPhone 3Gs....so I'm going to wait a while. It seems every time I purchase an Apple product, they drop the price soon thereafter. Which is okay -- since I'm willing to overpay for Apple products but not pay discount for anything Microsoft at this point. - Curt Mercadante
Nope - N97 unlocked for me. Even at ~$600 it's cheaper than the Iphone. Plus better camera, physical keyboard, FM transmitter, etc etc - Mark Zip

They are doing the same thing in the UK with O2.. - David W
most phone companies are like that, but they really went overboard with this. idiots - Cee Bee

Glen++ I will whine about AT&T for many (MANY) other reasons, but this is not one of them. - Mark Philpot
BTW, I wish AT&T would explain the difference between "standard upgrade price" and "upgrade price". Two of my three phones are eligible for the "upgrade price," and the other one is eligible for the "standard upgrade price." No idea what that means. - Mistletoe Glen
Switch to Sprint and the Pre. - Nation Hahn
This is nothing new for AT&T. They have long punished existing users with inflated price for continued service (Be it, mobile/ land phone. DSL, DISH...whatever) - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
It's not new for ANY wireless provider. They all have these things called contracts that they enforce. In fact, I believe contracts are used elsewhere, too. - Mistletoe Glen
I don't mind staying with AT&T, and I haven't had issues with their service (aside from them keeping streaming video apps wifi only - if I'm near wifi, I usually have a computer, so wifi-only apps are fairly pointless). But why can't I sign a new two-year contact at the lower price, and they just add on the time I have left on my current contract to the end of it? - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Glen: I don't know about anyone else, but I'd be more than happy to extend my current contract for two more years in exchange for the subsidized pricetag. If they'll play along with me, great. If not, then they *are* being idiots, and I've got every reason to complain. - Roger Benningfield
It's business. Business profit motivation is often at odds with customer satisfaction. at&t know most iphone users are probably happy with their phones and many will want to upgrade. It makes perfect sense, at least from a bean-counter's perspective, to charge them more. Personally, i'll be dumping at&t the second the iphone is offered by other carriers. - ·[▪_▪]·
Roger (and others), if you're willing to pay the early termination fee and then pay the new user charge, great, but what I'm hearing here and in other places is that current users want the new user price without paying for abrogating the contract they signed. - Steve Lowe
Steve, I don't want to abrogate it, I want to add it to the new contract, creating a three-year and a bit contract from the new two-year one plus the one year and a bit I have left on my current one. At least, I'd like that as an option. Or is it an option and for some reason no one's talking about it? - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Jandy, that's interesting, but what happens when the iPhone 4G (or whatever) comes out: do you end up with a 5- or 6-year contract with etf's running up to $500 or more? Also, you're the first person to mention adding on to their existing contract. No one else has mentioned that--that I've seen, anyway. - Steve Lowe
IMO, this is a case of being annoyed that AT&T treats existing customers like this, but new customers get the red carpet rolled out. We don't get a reward for being loyal customers? At this point, since I don't have the money to upgrade right away anyway, I'm going to wait out the rest of my 2-year contract, however much is left, and then try to upgrade. If I still have to pay the overinflated upgrade price then, I'll be pretty pissed. - Cheryl Jones
Cheryl, I would be too. The end-of-contract price and the new user price should be the same, I agree. And I don't know the deathstar's etf structure, but I've heard of some users who are finding it cheaper to pay up and just get a new phone. - Steve Lowe
As far as I understand there will still be a rebate for the people with one year left of their contracts. This rebate will just be half the rebate new users get since you are only technically adding another year to your contract. If that is not logical and fair I don't know what is. If people wanted to change their phone every year and add more to it every year because a new and... more... - Rasmus Lauridsen
There should be two options for existing customers. Extend your existing contract by two years (maybe there should be a ~3 maximum contract length) and an option to prorate the discount of the phone versus the contract remaining. In other words, a two year contract is worth a certain discount on the phone so my remaining one year is worth 1/2 that discount so give me 1/2 the discount new users get and let me get the new phone. It's fair and everyone can get what they want. - ·[▪_▪]·
I agree that AT&T is right and reasonable to set it's pricing as it does (they actually do give an extra $100 to us < 1yr 3g buyers)... but i think that that it would have been wiser for them to try something more consumer friendly. Their exclusivity won't last for too much longer and they should want to get people locked into contracts extending out as long as possible as well as building up the good will they're burning with their MMS/tethering crap. - felix
@·[▪_▪]· They pretty much do that now although how they calculate it doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Price of a 32GB 3GS is $699 with no discount. $299 for new subscribers or those not under contract. I'm currently almost a year into my 3G 2-year contract and my price is $499. A friend of mine who just got his 3G earlier this year, can also get it for $499. - ronin
Everytime I read "screw you" I'm hearing Leo laporte say it :). - Roberto Bonini
As I said earlier, I'd be happy to just extend my existing contract by two years. And here's the stupid thing for AT&T... if they lose exclusivity in a year or two, they'll lose me as a customer. I'm only on AT&T for the iPhone, and would switch in a second if the opportunity arose. They should be actively seeking to lock me in, not push me into waiting. - Roger Benningfield
@robot, yeah, that's fair. Sounds like maybe they're doing something like the 1/2 discount. I think I'll still wait till my contract's up, though (hey, by then they'll probably have another new model out). - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
fuck AT&T for trying to wring more money out of me. no interest. - mjc
:( I took their bait 'cause I wanted my netbook *so badlee*. They do suck donkey b***s, though. - Kamilah Gill
I'm confused about all the ire. The cheap prices for new or eligible customers are specifically because the subsidies get paid out over time during the contract. But after only one year, I can get a 3GS 32GB for $299 just as if I was a new customer (it's $499 if I buy it today, under one year with my current hardware). Surely if people want new hardware more frequently than once per... more... - LogEx
Okay, how about this, then? How about we shift some of the blame for failing to properly manage consumer expectations to Apple? They should advertise the retail price of the hardware, not the subsidized price. Then people would be pleasantly surprised to be paying lower prices if they're eligible for a full or partial upgrade, rather than annoyed to find they're paying more than advertised. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
+1 Jandy. There will always be a new product people want and it will come out faster than your contracts expire (subsidized or not). I don't really have a horse in this race since I got a 3G last Sept and am quite happy with it. I'll upgrade to the 3.0 OS and be happier. And when my contract expires, I might get the next version of the iPhone. Or not. If you want to be on the leading edge of technology, you have to be willing to pay the price. - CAJ, somewhere else
As much as I wish prices were lowered and there was some sort of leeway on the contracts (especially for customers loyal to their carrier), well said Alan. - Charlotte M

Mac-savvy Obama staffers frustrated with legacy White House
"President Obama's staff -- accustomed to Macs, social media, and having the latest equipment -- found Windows PCs with Microsoft Office 2003 in their new offices. Laptops were "scarce," apparently, and the team had trouble finding ways to update the redesigned White House website and add subtitles to web videos. Hi Jill. We learnt over the last 3 months that people feel very passionately about their google reader and some small number saw those tags as pollution. After doing some additional research we found that we could with some extra work make the integration more transparent/respectful hence this change. If you let me know which folders you use, I will talk to the team and see if we could build a preference knob where you could opt-in and regenerate them. Sorry for the inconvenience. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Looks like I might be giving Feedly another chance. Nice work Edwin - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Shey. please wait a little more until we migrate out of the z.feedly.people. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Will do Edwin, thanks for the heads up :) - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Great news, this should help increase adoption - Bwana ☠
I have to remind myself to leave feedly long enough to load the updated versions. Tremendous work Edwin, thank you. - michael sean wright
Great job Edwin. Keep the cool enhancements coming - Neill Adamson
Thanks for all the kind works everyone! - Edwin Khodabakchian
I believe that feedly is an extremely useful and cool addon... it can get really big soon but I am not using it because of the Google Reader additions. I use Google reader from my iPhone, other computers etc and I really don't like the extra "feeds" that although they are useful for feedly they are not practical in other cases. This is the reason I don't use feedly now and when z.feedly.people is removed I will try again! - Manos Matsakis
Manos. This is a good summary of what we have heard from active google reader users and the reason why we are working on the change. Please give us 2 more weeks and z.feedly.people will be migrated as well. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Feedly is becoming more and more polished with every version being introduced - I must admit lately I havent had the time to be as addicted to my RSS feeds as before so I tend to dip in and out of usually my favourites in Feedly but I can see that I could easily immerse myself for hours trying to play catchup on my feeds...sterling work. - David W

Research post - What are your dislikes about del.icio.us? What features is del.icio.us lacking?
I'll bite here-the ability to engage me. Never saw the need to go there. I've had an account forever but don't use it. - Mark Forman
i think there was a fairly well-commented-on post similar to this... - edythe
Mark - Me too. - Russellreno
the API rate limit. - directeur
The portability of your del.icio.us bookmarks is great but you always end up looking around for a password manager (again preferably sitting in the cloud accessible to multiple platforms both desktop and mobile) such as ipassword on the Mac or Roboform to get you into those sites requiring logon so tends to be half the process for me? At the moment ipassword and Roboform are platform specific but i know ipassword is developing a web based solution not sure on roboform. - David W
@Mike - I like the way you have been using FriendFeed for research and early adopter temperatures. It is a good idea. - Franklin Pettit
Searching your bookmarks is very slow. - Morton Fox
Morton : why don't you use tags instead? Or do you mean that it's slow even with tags? - directeur
I would like to see more social features - e.g. send me an email alert when someone joins my network, allow me to comment on other people's bookmarks, recommend other del.icio.us users who share the same interests, etc. - Mike Doeff
@Franklin thanks. Friendfeed has truly become a powerful research tool, in some aspects more powerful then Google. It's amazing watching this rapid transformation take place. - Mike Fruchter
The fact that you can't find out anything about users. I can find that X bookmarked a page and what other pages they bookmarked, but what about their other outputs; their blog, Twitter, Jaiku, FriendFeed. It's a dead end. I've blogged about it before, http://pastoid.com/xu+ - Michael C. Harris
the more I use Diigo, the more I see what delicious is missing. I named some in my article, but I am starting to pick up a few more now. I'll save my thoughts for another week or so :) I won't say Diigo is perfect, but it has what delicious doesn't. - Tim Hoeck
Thanks Mike. Keep the input coming guys. - Mike Fruchter
A better UI and everything that Diigo has. - Corvida
What's bad in del.icio.us UI? I find it so simply intuitive. In the other hand, the home page of Diigo scares me that I didn't signed up - directeur
I agree with Mike Doeff 100% here - Del.icio.us may be good to bookmark and even search for others' bookmarks but it is not even remotely social. But we call it SOCIAL bookmarking, right? - Svetlana Gladkova
UI, some social features and multi-word tags support - Dobromir Hadzhiev
It seems the release of del.icio.us 2.0 has stalled.I know a lot of people are hesitant to jump ship and go with another bookmarking service. What will it take for you to jump ship? - Mike Fruchter
Mike no need to jump completely, new tools can work with multiple services, I still push to del.icio.us for later reference, mainly 'cause of the handy extension, but now it doesn't work with FF3, frustrating isn't it - Dobromir Hadzhiev
I just wish del.icio.us would mirror the page when I bookmark it. :-( MyYahoo did this but then they bought del.icio.us. - Damon Cortesi from twhirl
@directeur yes the API rate limit does suck -- also wish there was more emphasis on the social aspect of bookmarking - Shey, Jamaican of FF
@Shey: I think the social side is well held... I have tons of people tagging stuff for me, I have a network, what else can we think of? :) And to answer the UI concerns, I myself will program a new client if yahoo decides to make the UI "complicated". I love the UI, it's simple, clean and does the work. - directeur
Ability to delete from the inbox and pull in stuff from feeds and automatically apply tags to them as described here: http://tinyurl.com/5rwkyb - Andy Davies
Tags management is a beast, and that really sucks as I would really like to reorganize my many and ugly tags. The API limit is another one. Lastly, search. I would hope that the search not only searches by tags, but by the content of the post. Because of this, we see a lot of recommendations to build a Google CSE over your delicious bookmarks so that you can search them by content as well. - Winston Teo
I don't think there is a way to block spammers. Like the guy who has 3 links, one of which is "the best of porns in one place" - ha3rvey (Ho)^3
