The zune is always an easy target, but from what I've seen it's on par if not superior to the ipod. Everyone I know who has a zune is happy with it. Plan on getting one when (not if) my ipod craps out.

Zunes have actually been independently reviewed as better than iPods, but as the article points out Apple took care of that problem by moving users to the iPhone. In fact, there's so little buzz about standalone portable media players nowadays it's not surprising hardly anyone's aware of it. I considered buying a Zune, but decided against it because of low capacity (120GB is NOT enough for me), lack of Last.fm support, and sparse documentation that increased the likelihood of severe buyer's remorse

=O Cost of living differences never fail to amaze me even though I logically know to expect them...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Anika, If we lived in LA we would live in our car. Usually a house for rent with a fenced in yard in Killeen/Harker Heights is about $900-$1000 per month. $675 is awesome. Here is the listing: http://www.folkerson.com/896plaz...
- Michelle Martinez
not necessarily michelle. remember that L.A. housing requires L.A. salaries. ... although if i wanted to live the same life in L.A. (i.e. carry a mortgage), i'd need at least twice the cash.
- tiffany
True, tiffany. Here you can get a decent house for $100,000. No lie, $250,000 would buy you a mansion.
- Michelle Martinez
Michelle, there's no comparable houses in my immediate neighborhood, but in the two cities next to me, that house would be rented for $3150 - $4000/mo. In my old neighborhood, 2bd-1ba houses like my current house are renting for $3500 - $6000/mo. It's not the house, it's what the neighborhood provides that seem to drive up costs.
- Admiral Anika
So people are essentially paying for the neighborhood? That is such a foreign concept to me. I have lived in the relative boonies most of my life, and houses have always been fairly cheap. Of course, where I have lived, someone making $60,000 and up is considered rich.
- Michelle Martinez
Yes, you pay for the neighborhood. That's why I had to get out of Hollywood. People (insufferable snobs) were calling that area "Beverly Hills-adjacent" which it wasn't or "West Hollywood-adjacent". Get over yourselves, you live in Hollywood. Deal. But it's not just location on a map, amenities, the schools and racial make-up and education level of the area play a big part in the cost of housing. My house in my brown, working class neighborhood would have cost 3x as much in my old Hollywood neighborhood.
- Admiral Anika
Anika, that shocked me when I was looking at houses in LA 2 years ago. I was considering a job offer there and couldn't get over the prices. Two-bedroom dumps in really bad neighborhoods are >$2k a month. I couldn't negotiate my salary high enough to feel secure enough to move, especially from Houston, one of the lower cost of living areas in the U.S. The lowest prices I could find...

"California would become the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana for recreational use under a bill introduced Monday by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco. The proposal would regulate marijuana like alcohol, with people over 21 years old allowed to grow, buy, sell and possess cannabis - all of which is barred by federal law. Ammiano, a Democrat in his third month as a state lawmaker, said taxes and other fees associated with regulation could put more than a billion dollars a year into state coffers at a time when revenues continue to decline."

It's really not about revenues, health or safety, rather more about removing the drug dealer from the equation. I'm not going to get into the moral right or wrong of recreational marijuana use but I will compare it to prohibition. Whenever there is a demand for an illegal substance there is the ability for organized crime to make a profit. Oh, and just for the record I don't do drugs.
- Keith Beucler
If we removed drug dealers from the equation, our health and safety might very well improve. I'm thinking we might even cut down on the incidence of acute lead poisoning related to drug deals gone awry.
- Victor Ganata
If U.S. farmers could legally grow and sell marijuana in California, this would result in less illegal growing and organized crime around the drug trade in the U.S., in Mexico and in the rest of Latin America. This would be a significant and important step in improving public safety.
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas raises an interesting point: Does anyone think that the various organized crime entities will allow this to happen?
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
What could they do about it if it did? Sue? Probably, huh.

Victor, the same as they've done for decades: influence politicians to keep it illegal and profitable for them.

"A White House spokesman referred to a statement on a question-and-answer section of an Obama transition team blog that says the president "is not in favor of the legalization of marijuana."" I think it's pretty weak on the part of Obama to skirt the issue on this one. He's already said that the drug war is a failure and he himself has smoked plenty of pot. I would have expected more courage from him and at least an actual thoughtful response rather than a canned one from his website.

Mona, heh! That's what I have in my fridge right now - TJ's crunchy organic. But I used to get Yum! Marantha makes the BEST cashew and almond butters, and organic peanut butter is SO much better than the sugar-laden name brands - better yet is sunflower seed butter, but it's slightly sweetened with cane juice - for what it's worth, Costco's organic peanut butter is great, and barely needs mixing
- William Harryman
I like natural PB, but texture can definitely be an issue. We used to get it in 5-gallon buckets when I lived in a co-op - talk about separation.

I've never noticed it tasting like Play-Doh. I did notice that is tasted almost the same, cost twice as much, didn't keep as long, and had to be kept cold. Perhaps it's just the different brands.
- xero
I must say oishii to peanut butter, and Play-Doh must have an earthy taste.
- Mike Reynolds
So, I accidentally got some of the sugary PB lately after years of sugar-free (which then generally means 100% organic) PB. And it's the 100% organic stuff with the sugar-the-call-cane-juice-so-you-won't-realize-it's-just-sugar in it. And OMG, it's cloyingly nasty sweet. A certain amount of salt is necessary, which I found out after salt-free PB, but the sugar is totally there to cover up for crappy peanuts.

IMO, the idea of a money-economy is outdated. I think we should take a fresh look at how we could do economic organizing without money, given the existence of the internet, social media, and information technology in general. Then we'd never have recessions again.
- Meryn Stol
But the who in this case is "us all".
- Meryn Stol
The populous does not lead, it follows.
- Alex Scoble
Alex, true. But all who want to listen then. :)
- Meryn Stol
Chris, as I said: The money-economy is outdated. You wouldn't have to pay for anything in an economy without money. And we won't be going back to barter of course. We'll allocate goods in a different way. And if you can't pay for goods, you can't use goods for "status" either. If you drive a big car, it just shows that you think you're entitled to a big car, because the idea of being wealthy would be gone.
- Meryn Stol
Uhm, I'm just saying we should reimagine things without money and banks, but with the internet, social media etc. I'm not saying that I've got all the answers ready.... I got a few thoughts of course.
- Meryn Stol
Chris, because you can't eat them all yourself! Figures :)

No, but seriously... Why would anyone want to give you either cocaine or sex... These "previous" drug dealers and hookers don't have to pay for goods, so they don't have to give you drugs or sell you sex to get money... The whole idea of a hooker will disappear. - except if you want to call someone who dates someone with high status a hooker of course. ;)
- Meryn Stol
Chris, if you want to hold on to oranges you don't want to eat, I think you'll soon develop the status of an asshole or a lunatic. Probably a lunatic, because why would you ever want to hold onto goods you can't use personally? These oranges in particular would even rot away. Why would you sit on them?
- Meryn Stol
If he can't get anything for his surplus oranges, he'd just stop growing the surplus and only grow what he needs for himself. If you don't have a useful commodity or service to trade, Chris will never part with oranges to you.
- Alex Scoble
"If he can't get anything for his surplus oranges, he'd just stop growing the surplus and only grow what he needs for himself." Alex, this supposes people don't take pride in their work. I take pride in my work. Do you?
- Meryn Stol
There's a logic behind the invisible hand. If the world has a finite amount of goods, some mechanism is needed to allocate the goods in society. Communist systems had shortages of various items - plus, money was part of the goods allocation system. Of course, one can argue that a capitalist system doesn't allocate goods that well either.
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
Sure. I would grow the best oranges I could possibly grow, for myself...unless you got some pot to trade.
- Alex Scoble
We need to go back to bartering. Plain and simple.
- Helen Sventitsky
I have an orange tree. I would like to eat an apple. I don't have an apple tree. What do I do?
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
Ontario: get in touch (through social media?) with someone who knows where to found apples, and get them. They're probably lying in the grocery store btw. :)
- Meryn Stol
I also recommend you give the oranges to the grocery store (or better: a distributor) because otherwise your oranges will rot away...
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, I hope the money-economy stays, I fear for Alex's sustenance if he has to start paying with his body.
- Steven Cains
I'm not suggesting we should replace the money-economy with a barter-economy, but more something like a gift-economy.
- Meryn Stol
OK. So if I want to search for Johnny Appleseed through social media, how do I get a computer and a net connection? And who would build the computer? Or maintain the network?
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
Pot just adds a touch of humor to a discussion about barter. Problem is Meryn that people don't act out of interest to society. They act out of self interest. If you don't have safeguards protecting society from those who's self interest runs counter to society, pretty soon you will be sitting in a mud puddle wondering why you can't get enough to eat. Without safeguards you could be fishing yellowtail all day and I'll just come take them from you at gunpoint and take your fishing pole for good measure...
- Alex Scoble
Ontario, all from people who take pride in their work. You think Steve Jobs isn't proud of all the Macbooks and iMacs on desks everywhere?
- Meryn Stol
and then shoot you twice, just to make sure you can't have your revenge against me.
- Alex Scoble
And then I'd shoot Chris twice, because he's always messing with my threads.
- Alex Scoble
I think I've messed up the most. Sorry Alex. I'll leave your threads to other people. :)
- Meryn Stol
Anyhow, I agree with Ontario...We need businesspeople with an eye for the big picture to lead us out of this mess and not economists mired in untested theories.
- Alex Scoble
I worked all day and then the government came and took my money away at gunpoint to give to other people and banks. Where's the mud puddle? I need to go sit in it.
- Morton Fox
Sorry, but I have to add one more comment on Meryn's idea. I think it can work in a very very small society, such as at the family level, where bonds of love can somewhat negate our natural desire to act in our own self-interest. Once the society gets larger, however - say, to a town of a few hundred people - you need to move to a barter system, or some other system that assigns value to items.
- Ontario Emperor
And you have to have mechanisms in place to make sure that people play by the rules. Such as cops.
- Alex Scoble
(edited typo) Back to the original question. In addition to economists mired in untested theories, two other groups who can't solve the problem are businesspeople interested only in their companies, and politicians only interested in re-election.
- Ontario Emperor
Has anyone of you read about "social entrepreneurship'? This is the most practical thinking out there, I think. It combines business mentality with social objectives. Not business for money, but business for the common good, with money as a means to an end.
- Meryn Stol
Isn't "business for the common good" charity? Why have a business if it isn't for profit?
- Andrew
Andrew, if this business is financially self-supporting (and possibly even profitable to some extend) it's not charity.
- Meryn Stol
Why not have a business that actually offers a valued service or product. *gasp* What a concept? If the only reason a business has for being is to make money it should die a quick death.
- Alex Scoble
Andrew, I think Milton Friedman's thoughts are HIGHLY dated. I don't know any current intellectuals who talk like him.
- Meryn Stol
The basic motivations of man have not changed. Thus money based systems are not outdated.
- Geoff Schultz
Meryn, I read one item on social entrepreneurship briefly http://www.ashoka.org/fellows... and will seek out more, but it seems that there is a difference between social entrepreneurship as commonly practiced, and an entire society without money or bartering. For example, Dr. Maria Montessori is cited as a social entrepreneur, but her ideas have resulted in numerous tuition-charging businesses.
- Ontario Emperor
Ontario: Yes, those are two entirely different things. But I think we should look at this group of people - people with this mindset, for the practical solutions. They are the "business people with a view of the big picture". Those entrepreneurs can execute now, while we still have to think on what is needed how to do away with money without anyone being worse off.
- Meryn Stol
That is, if we knew how, we probably would have done it. :)
- Meryn Stol
On one hand, they are. However, on the other hand, they're not.

Chris, paying me won't work, because I don't care about money. :)
- Meryn Stol
Back to the question at hand--I think we should be seeking economist's advice since they would be considered "experts" in this field--not just one, but many and from different schools of thought- However, they should not "lead" us but advise our leaders. We spent our way out of the Great Depression and we can spend our way out of this recession (and benefit more since the money will be spent upgrading infrastructure and not on at war).
- Kelly W.
Re: the back and forth with Meryn's moneyless and barterless economy? It may work for Meryn who seemingly doesn't care about monetary rewards, but for the rest of the world it does matter. We are not all equal and if things were "Free" ppl would not only take advantage of that but find some other form of currency.
- Kelly W.
between normal money and no money, there is barter and community currencies and we don't need economysts to advise us, we can just do it ourselves, which means we don't need gov help to do it either.
- ernie yacub
There's also the idea of "open money" like was presented at Gnomedex 7. That presenter was a bit confusing, and I didn't quite "get it", but he did make some interesting points about currency artificially storing economic energy making it intrinsically inefficient.

This is a case where it might be more effective to use open innovation and create a forum where non-economists who have ideas can participate and exchange ideas with the economists who are advising Obama. This could be done online, or a select, diverse group could meet in person or by teleconference as well as online. An innovation process could be developed to manage it. I would volunteer!;-)
