Freelance Writing: What is a Livable Wage? - http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com/2009...
$10/hr?! No way - Shevonne
There's a vast difference between living and existing. It's possible to exist on $10/hr. - Ian May
@Ian I don't think I could exist on that little. With a mortgage and kids, how could I? - Shevonne
I made more as an after hours inventory checker more than 20 years ago. - Martha
I think the last time I made that was when I was 15. I seriously don't know if I could live off of that. - Shevonne
oh yes it does depend on ones' circumstances of course. - Ian May
I do think one of my happiest times was when I was living off of $200 a month in college. *sigh - Shevonne
It also depends on where you live. $10 an hour is much easier to live on in the south/midwest than the coasts. - Rochelle
Even in Mississippi, $10/hour is tough. Maybe if you live in a paid for mobile home... - iTad
You could live off it here, but you would have a super small apartment on the bad side of town. - Michelle M
I guess what Ian said is right. You can exist. - Shevonne
Is existing living? - Todd Hoff
I guess it depends on the person. One person could make the most out of any situation, while another person couldn't. - Shevonne
It's like Rochelle says, it depends on where you live. I don't think in DC, anyone can really live off of $10/hr - Shevonne
And yet many people do. Minimum wage is $7.25. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I exist on about $13/hr. :( - Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Wow. You can honestly make more than $10/hr working at Sheetz (a gas station/food service place in the PA area). I just can't imagine trying to support a family on the east coast with that kind of pay. You'd have to work 80-90 hours each week to even try. Still, when talking about freelance writing, shouldn't you get paid a flat rate per piece rather than an hourly wage? - Curdy G
But you need the hourly rate in order to come up with fixed fee - Shevonne
If I retire at 66, based on my current salary (frozen for 3 years TYVM) I'll get the equivalent of $10/hr in pension+socsec+widow's pension. And have to pay for medicare and medigap out of that. And, you know, live. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
@m9m Where do you live? - Shevonne
Baltimore MD. Not cheap. And I'm 64 now. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
My sis lives there. Definitely not cheap at all. - Shevonne
Is it just you that you have to provide for? If so, then $10/hr is not bad - Shevonne
At least I own my house. Can't afford to fix it up much at that rate. Or have any fun. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
