yes if it's possible and of course if the employee is a proven podcaster then all arrangements should be made so that is is indeed feasible ;-)

This job I just interviewed for doesnt do telecommuting. They work for Dept of State. I worked directly with DoS and had the option. Not sure I can take this job due to that

where possible, sure! OTOH, it's very hard to telecommute if you're a mailman. :)

Not the one I interviewed for last week. Another one. I went cause they said the woman was forward thinking. Ive telecommuted since 2004, so dont see how forward thinking she is

Furthermore, companies should hire telecommuting employees from outside their immediate area.

In fact, if any companies want to jump on this bandwagon, feel free to get started by hiring me *right now*!

last company i worked for refused to let me telecommute, so i had to resign to take care of my new daughter instead of working from home while doing so. 3 years later and now EVERYONE in my old operating division telecommutes, in large part cos it saves shitloads of money all around.

Thats the thing. Im a single mom and handle everything for the kids. I cant be in an inflexible job where they still have an old school structure

Like Jim said, it's not practical for *all* companies or employees. Think about retail, for example, or the medical field. At my last job as a social worker, it wasn't possible because the state has regulations which didn't allow us to access the databases from computers outside the office. That company also had a rule that those who did telecommute (departments other than mine) had to have outside-of-the-home childcare for their kids.

I know what you mean. I guess I should say for me. I became a Writer to have this flexibility. I hope I get two big clients so I can do my business full time.

well based on some of the folks I have worked with. the companies might as well find strangers on the street and just give them money. The productivity will be the same ;)

Depends on the work being done, really. For some, it's just not an option.

most of the jobs i've had since 1996 have consisted of accessing and manipulating systems in another room, building, city, state or sometimes country, so i am basically telecommuting from the damned office already. why not do it from home? if management thinks i need to be watched THAT closely then they shouldn't have hired me to begin with!
