For all the single people out there...the best advice I can give you is to do what you like to do. Whatever your hobbies, join a group that does the same thing. Make friends. Friends lead to romantic relationships. Don't waste your time with dating.
I just went with the asexual route but I guess that works also. Add: I don't have to worry about any nagging or having to please someone else.
- Jimminy
Well, chances are there's at least one person out there who likes your hobbies that thinks you are OK, regardless of your personal foibles.
- Alex Scoble
Hehe, Derrick, we did not just have the same conversation..."these are not the droids you are looking for"
- Alex Scoble
most (but not all) of the other musicians i know are miserable, anti-social, back-stabbing jerks who i trust about as far as i can comfortably spit out a week-dead rat.

"Hi, I'm gay. Oh, you're gay too? Do you want to be gay together?"
- Derrick
One of my gf's joined a coed hockey team and that's how she met her husband. I prolly like spending too much time alone and get in my own way.
- Gabrielle V
how about joining a group that doesn't do the same thing?
- adam garrett
LOL, Adam, that's up to you on what to join. Just try to be a bit zen about it. Love comes looking for your if you aren't looking too hard for it.
- Alex Scoble
Thanks Alex. It hasn't been suggested that I be zen about anything in quite a while. I try not to be Johnny Lee. (Lookin' for Love)
- adam garrett
This works if your hobby isn't typically antisocial, such as computer gaming...
- Philip Evans
from twhirl
Heh, yeah, you've got to actually get out there and meet people to meet someone special. They are MOST LIKELY not going to come knocking on your door. That's a little too zen.

@Alex: music is also a hobby, it's the OTHER consuming passion in my life. thankfully, i've not been single in a long time.
- Joe Silence is not dead
I don't live life expecting to meet someone. When I do, I do - not too worried about being coupled or single...but that's me. I just need the internet ;)
- Mona Nomura
It’s funny you should bring this up right now. I don't know where to start, except to say that the last three days have been interesting. Three days ago, I received a request on Facebook to add a girl I haven't seen or heard from in years. I was apprehensive at first, because she was a close friend with my ex. Against my better judgment; I decided to add her, in the hopes my ex had...

There's a good kind, or healthy kind of need, and another type which requires constant attention. They can never be alone. It's gets to the point of being obsessive. I hope you understand the difference. She has to be in a relationship or she isn't happy. I think you have to be happy with yourself as an individual first, if your ever going to add something to a relationship.
- Michael Fidler
Excellent advice. I use my camera to meet people and share common experiences. If I had a puppy I would be Golden.
- Russellreno
I think this is good advice, but not because I think people will actually find "the one" this way. It is good because putting yourself out there to meet new ppl or try new things tends to result in being a happy, self sufficient person and thus an attractive candidate for partnership.
- Sarah Miller
from iPhone
I thought that you were supposed to put a ring on it. Hm.
- Wirehead
I was sure you were going to give the advice not to get married. ;)
- Cristo
I'm wanting to respond, but cautious, because not that long ago I was what I'd probably have termed "involuntarily single." And I'm trying to think of what I can say that wouldn't annoy 3-or-4-years-ago me. For me, the key was being myself, ACCEPTING myself, and accepting that I *could* live a perfectly happy life as a single man if I didn't find the right person. And I know that last acceptance is the most difficult, but I think it's the most important, too, IMO.
- Scott of Two Countries
Scott, I agree after having someone that I spent nearly a quarter of my life with pulled away from me it was hard, but I finally decide I'm fine by myself if that happens.
- Jimminy
I believe it's very important to be good with being by yourself first. Knowing you don't 'need' someone around to have a good life. Makes it easier to recognize when you've made a mistake and jumped a little too soon. :) And makes it easier to see the good ones when they do finally come along. Be good with yourself, then you can be good together. Then the mutual interests come into play nicely.
- Bette Cooper
++ Scott, Jimminy, Bette. Exactly what I wanted to say.

My husband and I don't have much in terms of shared interests or hobbies, although we do have shared values and goals. We were both happy with ourselves first (before we met). I found a dating website helpful because it made it clear we were on a date when we met up. There was none of this "does he like me, or does he just like the same things I do?" ambiguity.
- Clare Dibble
I met every woman I had a romantic interest in this way. "Dating" / the "singles scene" sucks.
- Trent Hamm
Neither dates nor friendships have worked for me since high school. All the relationships I've had since have resulted from hookups. Including the girl I'm currently seeing. Sad but true.
- LANjackal
from IM
Good advice, and I'd add that if you want a relationship but can't find anyone worthy who's into you (and you did put forth effort) it's probably because you need to work on yourself first. It's unreasonable to expect a non-crazy person to want you if you don't have it together yourself. And you bet I learned this the hard way, getting into a string of disasters because I couldn't face...

+1. I meet 98% of the girls I know from bars and clubs too. I'm often criticized for this and told that I'll never meet a decent girl that way, but I love going out and partying and I'm not the outdoors, artsy, library, book club, gym or playing sports (the usual suggestions I get) type. Partying (NOT getting trashed, I'm rarely wasted) is just what I do for fun and I love it. Whoever I get with is just gonna have to be OK with that or we'll never work

Super cool VW Bus making a comeback...
- Walt Ruppar
First of all, I'll cop to wanting one of these. That being said, Jason is right. This is for rich hippies (who probably aren't hippies at all). The VW microbus became the darling of the Flower Power crowd because it was cheap, easy to repair, and big. You could camp in it. Is there a car today that fits this bill?
- Chris Baskind
wow, you can buy an awful lot of pot with $129,000.
- Thomas Hawk
I don't know a self-respecting hippie that would prefer this over a really nice indoor greenhouse. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
@Chris, Most cars today aren't as simple, but with the wealth of knowledge online, it just takes more time. The minivan/SUV can become a camper van with a few mods. They'll never take the place of the VW, but they're an updated version of the 70s panelvan conversions (hopefully without shag carpeting & a disco-ball).
- Steven Cains
Nope: there will never be anything that simple again. That's not all bad: I can't imagine a 1960s VW Minibus would satisfy *any* federal safety standard these days. You're right. A used minivan might be the closest thing.
- Chris Baskind
Very Cool. You can't drive your house but, you can sleep in your Van !!!

If you were told you were dying. Were given an apporximate number of years. How would you spend those years of your life? Would what matters in the hear and now be as important, or would your priorities change?
I would probably spend the rest of that time doing the things that absolutely make me happy. And then when my time was about to come, I would do something so outrageous that it may end up ending my life anyways.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
A a quote from the Buddha! I like it. And yes, I would change my priorities. I would travel and experience as much as I possibly could in the time I had left. I would document it all with photography, keep a journal about it and try to put my story together to leave with my friends and family to remember me by. I would make the most of my relationships with the people in my life now and try to reconnect with friends I've lost touch with.
- Her Lindsay-ness
I would probably not change too, too much about my life, but then again...I pretty much run under the assumption I could die any day. Maybe save up more money and take what I believe to be the last 2-3 months of my life off to do fun stuff.
- Christian (Simply X)
More time with family and friends. Do the things I thought about doing.
- AJ Kohn
@Lindsay that's what I'm trying to do! Great minds think alike! ; )
- Adriana
I would also write a letter to each of the important people in my life, saying why they were important to me and thanking them for being a part of my life and telling them not to grieve. And ask that they be distributed after I'd passed on, so that people would know that I had been thinking about them as well. Maybe I should do that anyway.
- Her Lindsay-ness
OMG Lindsay that is a WONDERFUL idea! I am so glad you posted that! I think I might do that. : ) thank you : )
- Adriana
Spidra I am sorry your parents did this to you. That is not right! I hope you don't mind my saying so. You are right, you do forget about money and monetary things. That is one of the greatest feelings.
- Adriana
One other thing I would try to do is write a list (book??) of lessons I've learned in life, to give to my son, so he won't make the same mistakes I have. I might even set it up so that some of them he can't read until he's a certain age... Since I might not be there to deliver the advice in person, that would be something useful.
- Her Lindsay-ness
@Lindsay...you have some fantastic ideas! One of things I'm doing now is 365 days of Mommy and Vanessa video. She will have afull year of our interactions to see. I love this one!
- Adriana
Life is the one thing you'll never come out of alive.
- Ian May
Lindsay's ideas are great I must admit, but mine are somewhat controversial. These are things I can't quite justify doing in normal everyday life. If I get diagnosed with a terminal illness I'll do the following: Heroine, Crack, Peyote, Mescaline, LSD and Adrenachrome :)
- Toby Graham
We knew with my Dad. He was given a certain amount of time and that nothing could be done so we were as ready for his passing as we could be. Unfortunately his hid dictated what he could do and it wasn't very much. So if it was me it would depend on how much time I had left and my general health. If I was fit and health I would do lots of things.
- Kol Tregaskes
question: why wait until you get this news to do the fantastic suggestions above? Do ti now, you'll never regret it!
- alphaxion
Live every day like it's your last day on earth. Tomorrow is promised to no-one.
- Ian May
I would be doing the same thing: Preparing for Ushering in the Age of Communications. I came from the jungles of Belize to carry out a Vision. That being the convergence of all communication devices into a "Live" video capability to broadcast across platforms by individuals and groups. "think the Jetsons"...
- bcultral
I would travel more. Outside of that, the same priorities would apply.
- Steven Perez
Depends on how many years: if it's 90, then I wouldn't change my lifestyle. If it's 2, I think I'd make it to the FBI most-wanted list!

This video includes Annie Lennox and other notable people speaking out on why the current escalation in Gaza is a terrible idea that must be replaced by a new way of thinking, perceiving and acting, if there is ever to be peace in Israel/Palestine.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
I don't know enough about the history to take sides. :\
- Mona Nomura
I don't think it is a question of taking sides, other than in support of humanity and human rights. It's a question of what works. Will it really work for Israel to injure and kill many more Palestinian civilians, and will that stop Hamas from bombing Israel? The Israeli government has repeatedly tried these kinds of bullying techniques over and over again, and..THEY DO NOT WORK. It seems that they just create more militants in future generations. Declaring who is "to blame" simply doesn't solve anything.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
What should Israel do instead, Cathryn?
- Mitch Wagner
I think they have to move seriously toward releasing Palestinians from an oppressive captivity in Gaza, and move quickly toward two states and a just peace agreement with Palestinians. Then Hamas would lose whatever credibility they have, and their reasons for bombing Israel. That's a simple answer to a complex history & set of issues, but Israel's current approach is just not working, and I don't think it will stop Hamas from bombing. It will perpetuate the cycle of violence.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Hamas is not interested in a two-state solution. Hamas wants to destroy Israel and kill Jews. They don't make a secret of it - they're quite open about it.
- Mitch Wagner
Hamas does not represent all Palestinians by any means, and anyway, that still does not change the basic fact that Israel's current aggression simply won't work in the long run, and only creates more fear, distrust and hatred. There needs to be a different approach. Clearly, it hasn't worked before, using similar techniques, and many around the world feel that the Israeli government is violating basic human rights in the way it is treating Palestinian civilians. Palestinian people want a two-state solution.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Here's something inspiring—Refusing to be Enemies—Palestinian & Israeli women join in conversation toward peace—a film: http://ping.fm/SHkwZ I've also seen examples of organizations that get Palestinian and Israeli young people together to learn about each other, really listen to each other and converse, changing stereotypes. Why can't the fighting (mostly) men in power on both sides do this? No one will "win" this ongoing fight in the long run.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
@Cathryn you're too naive. Let me tell you a small secret - most of the Arab countries, including Palestinians and Gaza citizens want Israel to eliminate the Hamas (a radical Iranian extension). Do you really want to talk about HUMAN RIGHTS? Where have you been when the Hamas slaughtered their Fatah brothers? where have you been when more than 5000 missiles been launched towards Israeli children? Where have you been when suicide bombers attacked buses and restaurants in here? YOU HAVEN'T BEEN THERE.
- Nir Ben Yona
In fact, this conference you refer to was just a display of hypocrisy. Who was there, Ken Livingstone who hates Israel or Annie Lennox who is a great singer but doesn't have a clue about the conflict. No country in the world would have tolerated those missile attacks and no country in this world would act with such a high moral, the way Israel does. I won't elaborate about it but just FYI Israel calls every house before bombarding it (I bet Russia and the US don't do this). Watch Fox 10:00PM ET today.
- Nir Ben Yona
I have a number of Palestinian and Israeli friends, have worked on Middle East peace projects and have met Hanan Ashrawi and other notable people who have different viewpoints. It's easy to call me "naive" rather than really talk in a respectful way. I have also traveled in Egypt, which is not Israel, but I think you would perhaps think differently if you really knew anything about me—which is one point I was trying to make—let's get beyond stereotyping people we don't really know or understand.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
To learn who is the Hamas and how they use their children as human shields. 90% of the casualties are terrorists. Regretfully those militants surround themselves with civilians because they know the IDF will never target civilians while the terrorists indiscriminately launch missiles towards civilian centers. We want our children to live in peace instead of fear and horror. We want them to go outside look up to the sky and search for the sun instead of missiles and we have the right to protect ourselves.
- Nir Ben Yona
I simply don't agree with you, Nir Ben Yona. Your statements about the casualties do not match any information I'm getting from people who are really in Gaza or Israel, who are saying that many of the casualties are not terrorists and a significant number are women and children. I am going to sleep because it's now 3:00 a.m. here, and my purpose is not to argue back and forth. I just don't think Israel's current approach will help foster either lasting peace or security for anyone. Good night.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
NO war is worth it.... were the USA bothered about bombing women and kids in bahgdad?
- Rob Sellen :o)
@Cathryn: the people you met don't represent the majority opinion. In fact, they are less than 1% of the population. No one dares to speak against the Hamas because he/she will get a death penalty. This regime belongs to the Axis Of Evil and we ask no one to get our rights to live in a better world. I faced those terrorists, the only thing they understand is FORCE. The only thing they want is to wipe out Israel from the map. Every agreement with them will be doomed to failure.
- Nir Ben Yona
@Cathryn: you're eligible to think whatever you want, bear in mind I'm an IDF officer, so i know what I'm talking about. Different from your sources who stage images and fake numbers to create public opinions, my statements are strictly direct. I have no intention to argue, only when i see false reports. @Rob many times (not intentionally).
- Nir Ben Yona
I am going to sleep, but I doubt anyone is "staging images and faking numbers" among my sources. Nir, you have obviously justified to yourself what the Israeli government is doing, and I continue to disagree. I also protested against the Bush Administration's policies and involvement in Iraq and did not vote for either Bush (Sr. or Jr.). Good night again.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Protests won't stop the Axis Of Evil, but military operation combined with political agreements will do. Good Night !
- Nir Ben Yona
What does Bush's involvement with Iraq have to do with the Gaza raids? ... or am I missing something?
- Mona Nomura
Rob Sellen mentioned the Iraq war, and I was responding to his comment there. Good night, Mona.:-)
- Cathryn Hrudicka
Mona: Well the Bush government support the raids, but i think Cathryn wanted to exemplify the fact she's an activist as long as it concerns "human Rights".
- Nir Ben Yona
Understood. Night, Cathryn. :) @Nir: The Middle Eastern relations is far more complicated and deeper than I can ever imagine - the way I see it, is, a rock (or boulder) was dropped in a gigantic lake centuries ago, and we are only seeing the outer outer rings of that effect. There are so many things I don't understand and want to understand, and probably will never understand even if I actually visit. Your first hand accounts are very valuable to me. Thank you, for sharing your experiences.
- Mona Nomura
@Mona always a pleasure (although i ain't enjoying to share this kind of information). You are right about the complexity of the issue, actually i do think that both sides can make a substantial step forward if they will be smart enough to dismiss the religious aspects and settle with the civilian matters only. PS: we don't have enough room to share all my experiences regarding this notion.
- Nir Ben Yona
The problem is messianic ethnic and religious nationalism. This is a no-brainer. All parties to this conflict will either choose to join the modern democratic world, or they will blow each other up and take most of the world with them. Much of the world has already decided that they are incapable of reforming themselves.
- Sean McBride
1.5 millions people in a small area, bugger around with their food, water, electricity, medical supplies, freedom to move etc and then wonder why they get pissed off, oh and then bomb them for good luck. You have to wonder what planet Israel and it's supporters are on sometimes!
- Andy Davies
Andy: from your comment i understand they're all "paragon of virtue". I guess it's easy to forget those suicide bombers and missiles launchers. Sorry, as long as it doesn't get to your front door you have no clue what it feels like. September 11th was just a teaser eh?
- Nir Ben Yona
Hamas certainly may not be a paragon of virtue but they were democratically elected and there's much more to Hamas than the just the armed faction. Since when has it been OK to collectively punish over a million people because you don't like who they elected?
- Andy Davies
Andy? Have you read your words out loud? As in vocalizing them? Listen to yourself speak, not write. Just saying.
- Mona Nomura
Mona - have you read any major scholarly works on the history of this conflict? Thank you kindly for the recommendation but I learned in elementary school to think critically and politely ignore suggested reading from biased opinions. Oh, and that skill was acquired long before I ventured into social media. So thanks, but no thanks. :)
- Mona Nomura
Mona - what scholarly books about this conflict have you read and are you prepared to recommend? I've read a few dozen at least, most of them by Israeli scholars and high Israeli officials, like Yehoshafat Harkabi.
- Sean McBride
Oh, and out of curiosity: have you ever been to Gaza? Israel? Palestine? Is your knowledge acquired solely from scholarly books? Is that truly enough to understand and comprehend centuries of history? Just asking, since you seem to know all the answers ... just from "Reading fact-packed and densely argued books" ;)
- Mona Nomura
Sean... why not take a hop on a plane.. go out there see what it IS like. ;o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Bingo. The one thing I hated about my Ivy years was being surrounded by people who think they know all the answers just by reading, which is myopia at its finest. Need proof? Our government.
- Mona Nomura
Sean: don't try to open another front, we are well prepared. Take Rob's advice and get the first plane to the Holy Land.
- Nir Ben Yona
Mona: do I take it that you are not prepared to recommend any books at all? Visiting a place doesn't make one an expert on the place. Most of the participants in world conflicts haven't the slightest idea of what is really going on and about what forces, ideological, financial and otherwise, are controlling them.
- Sean McBride
Rob - do you need to visit Ireland to appreciate that you have no interest in getting involved in conflicts there between Catholics and Protestants? Or to visit India to appreciate that it is not in your interest to get involved in conflicts between Hindus and Muslims? (Perhaps you were being ironic. :))
- Sean McBride
It is interesting, by the way, that many Israelis are leaving or thinking about leaving Israel precisely to get out of this mess. There are better ways to live than getting sucked into ethnic and religious holy wars.
- Sean McBride
Cathryn - There is no evidence to suggest the Palestinian people want a two-state solution. They elected Hamas, which publicly espouses destroying Israel and death to Jews.
- Mitch Wagner
Mitch Wagner: there is also little evidence that Israelis are really interested in a two-state solution; otherwise Israeli governments under both the left and the right wouldn't have supported the settlements movement in the occupied territories. But this misses the main question: why should Americans and Europeans become mired down in an ethnic and religious holy war that is damaging to their own best interests and values?
- Sean McBride
Both sides seem to be engaging in brinkmanship here. I don't think Israel can call their current actions a measured response, but at the same time Hamas is far from blameless. From the outside, at least through the eyes of the media (which is how most people in the world will see it), Israel is looking like the aggressor at the moment. That will only hurt their cause. Both sides need to learn how to talk to each other, and accept their differences. Of course, that's a lot easier to write than to do.
- John
John - the main question for Americans is how much more money can we afford to piss away in this pissing contest, especially when America is on the verge of economic collapse as we speak.
- Sean McBride
Sean, the U.S. and Europe support Hamas indirectly through paying for oil. If America withdraws its support from Israel, Israel's enemies will likely defeat it, and Israel will use nuclear weapons to defend itself. I don't claim to have all the answers here -- I don't have *any* answers -- I just don't like the blame-Israel-first policy from people who never seem to ever protest Arab and Palestinian abuses of human rights.
- Mitch Wagner
Mitch: so you are saying that the United States and Europe have strong motives of economic self-interest to maintain friendly commercial relations with much of the Arab and Muslim world. True enough. I've never blamed Israel first. I've argued that all parties to this conflict need to back off from their ethnic and religious enthusiasms and modernize along the standards of Western...

- Sean McBride
Sounds good, Sean. How do we get there. My blame-Israel-first comments are directed at Annie Lennox & others who criticize Israel but are silent when Israelis are attacked.
- Mitch Wagner
Yes Mona I have - We live in a world that rightly condemns rockets being fired into Israel, but is remarkably silent when it comes to the suffering of those in Gaza. What angers me even more is this current phase is about politics i.e. the Israeli general election that's coming up.

Mitch: matters will only change if AIPAC decides that it is in its best interest, and in the best interest of Israel, to use American power to force a peace settlement in the region with every means at its disposal. But I'm betting that the drift towards Kaboom! will continue apace. I feel like we are looking at a replay of the Bernard Madoff debacle, but on a much grander scale. The...

The animal, dressed in a child's wetsuit to keep it warm, enjoys floating across the wide pool, before waving at onlookers. Surya lives at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species in Miami, Florida, USA. He is put in the pool every week to keep him active and challenged and appears to enjoy splashing about with his trainers. Animal expert Dr Bhagavan Antle said: "Suyra loves playing in the water. But he doesn't like getting his head wet, so he wears a lifejacket so he doesn't go underneath.

Right now I could walk to that refrigerator over there, you know, take out a couple of slices of white bread, a little mayo and slap together a B-L-T. That's bacon, Lucky and tomato.
I think it's incredibly stupid when forums try censorship. Especially over something as stupid as writing an "anti-Canon" post. I'm glad that I've yet to see any serious instance of censorship on FriendFeed and hope that FF stays censorship free in 2009.
- Thomas Hawk
Completely agree with Thomas Hawk, it makes no sense and quite frankly being part of a forum like that is only bad for its participants
- Dean Blithe
That's abhorrent. I am a big Canon fan myself but even I will admit that they need a kick up the arse at the moment - and one of the best methods of communicating this is across forums such as this. On a side note, just for a second there I thought that this was about Digital Photography Review and not Digital Picture, and nearly wept. Phew.

I remember going to the cinema in the early 90s and seeing a poster saying "Free Willy: Coming Soon". My mum couldn't stop laughing but I was just that little too young to undestand!

Strange that this article would ask what about HD-DVDs when Blu-ray took over earlier this year (even though HD-DVD was clearly the superior-looking format).
- James Hull
Oh, I need to change that to HD movie downloads - Thanks James!
- Mona Nomura
Since I got one for Christmas, I guess it's a good thing I answered "yes" to the first three questions. I'm curious to see, though, if Blu-ray takes off the way DVD did. It's an improvement, yes, but it doesn't seem like the leap-and-bound improvement that DVD was over VHS. I still plan to buy most things on DVD and save my Blu-ray budget for the super-visually-fantastic things (at least until the disc prices drop further - but that was my plan with DVD, too, and that didn't last long).
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I'm in the same boat as Jandy. I still plan to buy traditional DVDs, and only get Blu-ray for the best. Compatibility is more a driver for me than cost. I know I can easily "Fair Use" traditional DVD material. Blu-ray is not yet as user-friendly in that regard. Also, I can play a DVD in many more players. I haven't yet researched physical robustness of DVD vs. Blu-ray, but that's a potential factor one way or the other.
- LogEx
The other thing is, I've accumulated so many DVDs in my collection that I never watch, so I'm trying to be a lot more thoughtful and selective about which ones I really even want to own and expect to watch multiple times.
- LogEx
That too, Logical Extremes. I've hit a few too many Blockbuster previously-viewed sales, and now I have things I don't even WANT to watch again.

Apple isn't a big fan of Blu-Ray, from what I can tell, so I haven't been exposed to the phenomenon. Most of the time, TiVo + AppleTV + online media is good enough for me. I'm not even sure our DVD players are hooked up to our TVs right now, let alone Blu-Ray.
- Louis Gray
Blu-Ray does look and sound better than Apple TV HD (have both). As soon as there are 1080p/24fps downloads with full DTS audio, the Blu-Ray player goes up on eBay.
- James Hull
Louis, you gotta come over for a movie night.
- Robert Scoble
How come I'm not invited, Robert? :(
- Mona Nomura
Where does opting for HD downloads = two hour wait? At least via a PS3 or an Xbox 360, you can probably start watching with no hitches within 10-15 minutes, less time than it probably takes to go to the store. and you don't have to put on pants. cable VOD? 0 start time. 1080p vids on a Vudu will cost a few hours, butthat's just one case, if its something off of Netflix, we're only talking about a few seconds.
- Richard Lawler
I'm a big fan of physical media. I like seeing my collection as it grows, some people collect books, I collect movies. On occasion I have used HD downloads, or streaming and while convenient, it just feels cheaper. I also don't like the feeling of not actually owning a copy of the movie. That's just me I guess :)
- Nick
Nick: I never understood why people collect movies. I very rarely watch a movie twice and even then it's still cheaper to put it back on my Netflix list.
- Robert Scoble
Oh and @jandy stone. I agree, at first most Blu-ray movies weren't that great compared to their dvd equivilants. However, on a decent hdtv the quality now is superb. Movies like Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda, Dark Knight (to name a few) look incredible and if you can't tell the difference in quality over dvd, I give up :)
- Nick
Robert: I just like to have the choice available to me at any time. Some people collect books, some cars, you collect gadgets from what I can tell :)
- Nick
Maybe ppl will talk more bout HD & streaming it. No Cable company will give u true HD nor can anyone truly stream HD content thats the same as whats encoded on a Blu Ray disc. But the HYPE continues bout getting HD online.
- Baba
Cable Companies don't have the infrastructure right now to offer HD visual and audio quality like Blu-Ray. They need a kick in the pants in that area :)
- Nick
Nick: I don't keep most gadgets. I either lose them, or sell them to buy the next one. I don't believe in hoarding. Seems to be a lame way to use our planet's resources. But, I understand why some people want to collect. Just not for me.
- Robert Scoble
So you would prefer an entirely digital life?
- Nick
I prefer the convenience over "perfect" audio/video. VOD HD is good enough for me in most cases, and on my TV you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a download and a Blu-ray in PQ, while beyond having surround sound extra audio effects are usually lost on me.
- Richard Lawler
Scoble: Most people began collecting media in the pre-Netflix era, and the habit is deeply entrained. I will say, though, that, while Netflix is more economical for those movies you don't plan to watch more than once, it is lacking in the instant gratification department. (And some of us can't help watching Earnest Saves Christmas over and over again at Christmas).

Data caps are around the corner - I don't know about you guys, but there is NO way I am paying for overage.

Regarding Blue-Ray taking over. I was at B&N in Campbell CA last week and noticed a small section of Blue-Ray (BD) disks and also noticed that almost all of their DVD's were on sale for 50% off. I asked the video department manager about it and he said that they are trying to get rid of their stock of DVD's so they can replace them with BD disks. Now that BD player prices are fairly low, and retailers are trying to get rid of their DVD stock, I believe that BD sales will take off this coming year.
- Jeff P. Henderson
@Nick, I can tell the difference, but I don't think DVDs look "bad" yet. Not like watching VHS, which makes me want to tear my eyes out. But before DVD, I didn't think VHS looked "bad," either, so I'm curious to see how long it takes before Blu-ray spoils me for DVD.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I've owned a BD player for a year now. I can definitely see the dramatic difference between DVD and BD disks. DVD's look good, but BD's just look much better. I no longer will buy or rent a DVD if a BD version is available. In a couple of years, you will probably be hard pressed to find DVD's for sale anymore.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I love my BD player, and usually buy 'man' movies (read: the anime or sci-fi that my wife isn't interested in seeing). They look great on the home theater. Plus, all my games come on BD (PS3). I don't believe the numbers or the hype pro or con.
- Eric Rice
I have a question for all of you: Is there a region code problem for blu-ray? I found wonderful blu-ray cd's from amazon.com, but then saw about the warning message about it like dvd's. Can it possible to have region code problem with this type of cd's?
- Gül Fatma Koz
Blu-ray Discs may be encoded with a region code, intended to restrict the area of the world in which they can be played, similar in principle to the DVD region codes, although the used geographical regions differ. Blu-ray Disc players sold in a certain region may only play discs encoded for that region. The purpose of this system is to allow motion picture studios to control the various...

boring..seriously..why can't companies bundle up there releases with something that is really worthy. I'd love Flickr to revamp their Groups interface and potentially tie it into Yahoo! Groups.

Randy, Flickr is a social network for photography enthusiasts. They aren't going to farm off their social networking functions to some other site.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
I think it's actually a pretty significant improvement for the site. The old way Flickr managed contacts was archaic. It's much easier now to find contacts that you have not reciprocated with etc. It's one more thing to make the site that much stickier and that much more useful. Interesting though that they still won't share with you the negative side to reciprocity (i.e. who is blocking you and who you call a contact who does not reciprocate back).
- Thomas Hawk
Especially since too many people blocking you can get your account deleted on Flickr, it would seem fair that they allow you to know who is blocking you at any given time.
- Thomas Hawk
I also would like to see who of my contacts does not reciprocate. I really don't care on a personal or emotional level, but since Flickr has a limit on non-reciprocal contacts I'd like to delete anyone I added years ago who did not reciprocate and has not published in months. They say this feature was removed because it caused a lot of drama in the beta test (http://tinyurl.com/6cysq6).
- Tom Harrison
I took a curious look at their API documentation to see if this could be accomplished with a third party app. It appears that it could not be done without an expensive multi-query function, or by scraping your contact list and subbing out the reciprocals.
- Tom Harrison
Regardless of anyone's preferences, each program in the MS suite is the best of class, by far.
- eggsy
Their contact system is still a piece of crap. I can't group or tag contacts, and I still can't see any more than their five most recent uploads. Friendfeed - a third party site - offers a vastly superior system for managing flickr contacts than flickr itself. There's something downright screwy about that.
