You love them both: Your MAC and Gmail, right? But they are both from different worlds and aren’t friends, yet. That’s where Mailplane comes in to bring them together
- Dean Thompson
I used Mailplane for a long while instead of Apple Mail about 2 years ago. It was quite nice, probably even better these days.

1. The Technorati ranking for louisgray.com is below 3,000 (although there is not a "Top 3K" button) 2. RSS Subscriptions blew through 2,500 and 2,750 this week. And just think... in December, my goal for the end of 2008 was 500. Shows what I know. :-/

I used to care about my Technorati rank and authority, but caring about such metrics only made me more frustrated about my blog and I ended up pushing out low-quality posts.

Here's another cool way to look at the data, from RatingBurner. http://ratingburner.com/... (If you guys don't know RatingBurner, go check it out)

Louis: Congrats! Do you think these numbers are due to involvement with FriendFeed? Something else you've been doing other than writing great post?
- Justin Korn
@Justin, being active on FriendFeed I believe has been win/win. Others credited me with helping them get more visible during the early days, and my higher visibility here has helped the blog, for sure. But without consistent good posts, activity here would be siloed.
- Louis Gray
Louis, it's simple: (1) you have a great attitude, and (2) you produce fantastic content. I don't subscribe to your blog, but I bet I read most of your posts because I see them on FriendFeed.
- Dean Thompson
@Louis: I am not doubting that the constant good posts is the major mover. I was curious if you thought there were other potential movers. After all, you thought you would only have 500 subscriptions by the end of the year...according to your stats you are poking at 6x that only half way in. Those are amazing numbers.
- Justin Korn
I echo Dean Tompson. Congratulations! :)
- Mona Nomura
Movers have to include the visibility on FriendFeed, occasional appearances on Techmeme, and engagement with other bloggers who link. Participating is a big deal. Not to get all introspective, but two years ago, I was getting 500 visits a month, and that's documented here: http://friendfeed.com/e...
- Louis Gray
and it seems like only yesterday (because practically speaking it WAS) that you were at 1000. It's impressive, congrats! But the number I really want to see is the "reach" number that went along with the 2752 on Wednesday. If you go into stats boy mode, I'd love to see the analysis of impact on % reach as your sub base has grown.
- Robert Seidman
Nice Louis! That's a lot of subscribers coming in this week. And there should be a Top 3,000 icon in Technorati.
- Hutch Carpenter
@Robert: 1,050 reach. 2,025 the previous day. Who knew?
- Louis Gray
That's amazing Louis - what I love about you is these probably don't even matter to you. You're sharing this to show others they can do it too. (I hope others see this)
- Jesse Stay
Nice one Louis. Enjoying the guest posts too.

This actually makes me think of the post I just wrote. You provide value and push boundaries and all those numbers shoot up. Congrats :)

Doctors get awesome accessories like stethoscopes and light pens. Why don't software engineers have anything like that? I'm jealous of Megen every morning.
Hey, and if what we make crashes, we can just reset, delete & start over -- no big loss (especially with version control systems, heh).
- John μller
Pocket protectors & badge belt clips? Oh, right, I missed the awesome part. Don't forget they get to wear pajamas at work too...

I'm not gonna stop you if you choose to walk around with a Sonic Screwdriver, so go for it!

I guess I've got my Moto Q9c; but you don't have to be a developer to have one.

Nifty debuggers, libraries of functions, and fast computers count. Perhaps you'd feel good with a Jail Broken iPhone running Linux?

A friend of mine liked to say his goal in life was for someone to say "Stand back, a computer scientist is coming!"

The equivalent of the stethoscope (for the DIY hardware-geek practitioners) has got to be the Anti-Static Wristband http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-... Now _that_ is a chick magnet as they say.

They have crash carts in data centers. Maybe you could carry around a crimper, logic probe, laser pointer (for, y'know, Powerpoint presentations), dangle some patch cables around your neck. Get yourself a tool belt and wear a butt set. When someone asks you what the butt set is for, cryptically reply, "Just in case."
- Karim
You're forgetting the propeller beanie. Doctors don't get to wear those.
- Chris Johnson
Slide rule. Pocket protector. Flash drive around neck. 'nuff said. :)
