Youth Without Youth is a 2007 film by Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novella of the same name by Romanian author Mircea Eliade. It was the first film that Coppola had directed in ten years since 1997's The Rainmaker. It was distributed through Sony Pictures Classics in the United States and Pathé in the UK and France. The film was shot with a Sony HDC-F900 in High Definition and edited on Final Cut Pro 5. The music was composed by Grammy award-winning Argentinan classical composer Osvaldo Golijov. Originally the film was to be distributed by United Artists. Sony Pictures Classics distributed the film when it opened in limited release in the United States on December 14, 2007. In the garden of my house there's a tree with lots of randomly grown twigs. It looks odd and nice at the same time. One day I asked myself if I could create a piece of music with it. To tune the tree I picked a fundamental note and tuned the twigs by trimming them with a pencil sharpener. I used two Røde NT6 and a NTG-2 as microphones, combined with a customized stethoscope. I recorded the tracks live on a Pro Tools LE system. I didn't use any synthesizer or sampler to create or modify the sounds. All the sounds come from playing the tree, by bowing the twigs, shaking the leaves, playing rhythms on the cortex and so on.
