"This article is meant to serve as a guide for migrating a live system from ext3 to an ext4 filesystem, including migration of files to use extents, a major feature in ext4. It describes the entire migration procedure, including common pitfalls involving a migration of a live system, as opposed to doing a fresh install."

"Ubuntu Privacy Remix is a modified Live-CD based on Ubuntu Linux. UPR is not intended for permanent installation on hard disk. The goal of Ubuntu Privacy Remix is to provide an isolated, working environment where private data can be dealt with safely. The system installed on the computer running UPR remains untouched. The risk of theft of such private data arises not only from "conventional" criminals, trojans. rootkits, keyloggers etc. In many countries, measures are taken or being prepared aiming at spying and monitoring its citizens. Ubuntu Privacy Remix is a tool to protect your data against unsolicited access."

"If you have read my Ubuntu 9.10 review last week, you must have noticed my reaction to the latest Ubuntu release was rather lukewarm. This makes today's Kubuntu review all the more intriguing. First, is there and why is there any difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu, after all, they are pretty much the same distro? Then, what are these differences and are they any good? The title may blunt off some of the suspense, but you are in for an interesting read."

Looks awesome, quite better than sidux. "0wn" (a funny name for knoppix's installer) had a couple of bugs preventing me to install it, if you run into the same problem check out http://lists.debian.org/debian-... (still not in the archive now, but I sent a fix to the mailing list).

usually i don't install knoppix, i just use it as a livecd. beside that small error, what do you think about the installer? is it more flexible than sidux's installer? i really don't like it! what do you think about lxde/openbox? i'm using both but on my debian laptop. thanks for the tip, when i have some time i'll try it! :)

Sidux is better to install than Knoppix, but then it is unstable to the point of uselessness. Knoppix was never made to be installed, and still isn't. The installer is bad (for instance, you have no choice but to have a reiserfs partition) and the result is a live-cd-like system (no passwords nor users). The system overall should be more Debian-like (what's that whole knoppix-startx...

that is why i decided to install pure debian, usually i use a debian netinstall and install only the apps i really want. i'm using a debian testing/unstable right now plus the smxi script and the liquorix kernel and sometimes the sidux kernel, it's stable as a rock.... for wm i'm using lxde. this is my laptop config, for my desktop i'm going to install fedora 12 so i can study it.

"“TuxOnIce is most easily described as the Linux equivalent of Windows’ hibernate functionality, but better. It saves the contents of memory to disk and powers down. When the computer is started up again, it reloads the contents and the user can continue from where they left off. No documents need to be reloaded or applications reopened and the process is much faster than a normal shutdown and start up.” – tuxonice.net"

"If you look at the above list, it's essentially the same sorts of things I do on my regular laptop. What surprised me the most about the device is just how much it /feels/ like a regular Debian Linux machine, especially on the command line. I mean it uses upstart, pulseaudio, apt-get, GTK and QT libraries, and when I want root I don't have to use hacked firmware, I just install the gainroot package and type sudo gainroot."

"Hot on the heels of the final release of the Karmic Koala, we've put together a video montage of 64-bit versions of Microsoft's Vista and Windows 7 operating systems booting alongside Canonical's Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10. Watch all four at once and see which one wins! Each operating system has been freshly installed and features exactly the same hardware configuration. Auto-login is enabled, and each will launch Firefox which will then proceed to load our homepage."

"There is one key difference between our quality story and Microsoft’s though: we are transparent. You can download all of the source code that comprises Ubuntu, you can see all of our bugs, you can see all our patches, and because the software is free, you can download it freely and try it out, if only for shits and giggles. With a transparent development and quality assurance process, a culture of openness and transparency develops and we are all frank and honest about defects. Speaking as one dot on the Internet, I work for Canonical, a company directly invested in Ubuntu, and I feel comfortable reporting public bugs and defects in Ubuntu and I feel comfortable talking about what rocks it and what ails it: it is part of the Open Source culture in which we all exist. I love this attribute of free software: we are not afraid to talk about problems, and due to the open nature of our environment, the opportunity exists for success."

«A friend of mine suggested that I should include as boilerplate in my security stories, a line like: "Of course, if you were running desktop Linux or using a Mac, you wouldn't have this problem."
