I wish birds like that were around here. The birds we have generally have very uninteresting plumage. Except for the feral parrots, which I'd gladly forgo.

Maybe in the foothills or near the Arboretum, but not in the suburbs here. Of what I can identify, I've seen mockingbirds, crows, ravens, Western scrub jays, black phoebes, mourning doves, pigeons,house finches, house wrens, and feral parrots. I've VERY occasionally seen hawks of some sort but not close enough to get a photo and identify.

Yeah, bluebirds are habitat specialists (old fields and woodland edges where cavities are available). I don't see these in my neighborhood, only in nature preserves.

You'll want to hit some of your more open-spaced parks to see them in SoCal. They're widespread down there but like John said, they're habitat specialists and they really enjoy nesting in oaks or anyplace where nesting boxes have been installed. Like oak savannahs are a big favorite. But I know you can find them in larger parks if you know of any nearby.
