Surely ankle weights would have little or no effect on the effort expended on a bike? You know, because the one pedal is directly connected to the other, so the weight on one leg is counterbalanced by the weight on the other leg. If anything, I'd say the weights would give you a slight assist.
- Slippy
My thighs respectfully disagree :)
- Johnny
from iPhone
It works as an opposite. While yes the extra weight would help on the down stroke, I still have to lift my other leg with the weight on it. I eaither have all that weight on the up pedal whicj means I have to push it up on the down stroke or lift my leg with the weight on it. Add to that I now have 2Kg strapped to each ankle, that forces me to adjust my balance, working my core.
- Johnny
from iPhone
Might get some and see what a difference it makes
- Mo Kargas
I can get that, and I'm not going to argue with your thighs, obviously, but the weight on your left foot on its downstroke is assisting the right foot in its upstroke. I think. My physics-fu is rusty from years without training. Of course, if you lift off the pedal on the upstroke, you're making both legs work at the same time, increasing the workload throughout.
- Slippy
buuuut also increasing the chance you'll fall off the exercycle.
- Slippy
I think Slippy is right. All the work is on the downstroke, and that is alternated between the legs. While one works, the other rests. That's how you ride a bike.
- April
for the record, Johnny is also wearing nipple weights. But we aren't sure why

Sammy was diagnosed with a moderate gluten allergy (likely exacerbating his skin problems). So now I'm trying to wrap my head around a gluten-free diet for him. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
From the wiki article: "A gluten-free diet allows for fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and many dairy products. The diet allows rice, corn, soy, potato, tapioca, beans, sorghum, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, arrowroot, amaranth, teff, Montina and nut flours and prohibits the ingestion of wheat, barley, rye and related components, including triticale, durum, graham, kamut, semolina, spelt, malt, malt flavouring or malt vinegar."

There are many more gluten free options than before. I'm sorry to hear that.
- Shevonne
from iPhone
Yeah, there's definitely more available than there used to be and the Bay Area is an epicenter of that availability. There are a number of folks here on FF who have gluten allergies and could offer advice. I wonder if there's an FF room for it? Shoot a note to RAPatton, too. He's an expert at making goodies that are gluten-free.
- Spidra Webster
We're here for your Stephen. Both Janine and I have celiac so the house is gluten free. Just let me know what you need to know. It's not that bad once you figure out the logistics. You can eat all fruits, vegetables, potato, meat, rice, non flavored chips and once you know where to shop you can make almost anything. Hardest part is being smart eating out but even that's easier than ever. On FF you can ask me, Lix, or RAPatton for advice.
- SteVe C
I have a couple emails to send you with local options but I have found that quinoa pasta tastes best (at least to me) and I have a favorite glutin free pasta sauce I'll double check the name for you. Also Mexican food has lots of glutin free options.
- Rachel Lea Fox

Thanks Rachel! I made him some rice pasta mac 'n' cheese the other night. It was awful. He hated it. (Although Sophie liked it okay.)
- Stephen Mack
Yeah I never liked the rice pasta either. You can get quinoa at most super markets. I don't need glutin free in everything but I still make it sometimes.
- Rachel Lea Fox

My mother-in-law has celiac as well, so we're pretty well-versed on travelling with it as a consideration, where to shop, restaurants that are accommodating (and I imagine that like Seattle, your area has a lot of them). I also agree that the quinoa pasta tastes best and has the best texture. I also have a lot of recipes for cakes, etc.
- joey
Stephen, my favorite pasta sauce is Mezzetta Napa Valley Bistro. I love the Creamy Vodka Style Marinara but all of their sauces have been good. I also sent you an article about the all gluten free store in SF but here it is again: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin...
- Rachel Lea Fox
Got the e-mail, thanks! So far with Sammy, I've learned he really likes simple. I tried two different gluten-free bars, and the one I thought he'd like with caramel was too much, but the straightforward rice puff and peach one he liked a lot. (He's still not big into sauces.)
- Stephen Mack
Oh and there was a discussion on here about a particularly good gluten free brownie mix. But now I can't remember if it was from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. I'd know if I saw it. Can anyone chime in with the answer?
- Rachel Lea Fox
I think the most challenging thing about this is that he's a picky eater to begin with. Plus he's allergic to nuts & peanuts, And plus he's saying he wants to be a vegetarian...
- Stephen Mack
Oh goodness that is difficult. I just know when I was experimenting with gluten free I was surprised to find that pasta sauce had gluten in it. I never would have guessed that. Turns out it was good that I did since it seems I have no gluten allergy but in tomato products they must remove something else, likely a preservative, that I have huge issues with. So all my pasta sauce has to be gluten free.
- Rachel Lea Fox
Jimminy, that wasn't the original discussion I saw but I think you are right. I just remember discussing the brownies on here in the past and getting a box and trying it and really liking it. I think the original discussion is so old that it is no longer in the buffer on here. :(
- Rachel Lea Fox
Kristine is gluten free and no doubt can help, Stephen.
- Louis Gray
Betty Crocker now has gf cake and brownie mixes in regular stores both excellent too. How old is Sammy? Just wondering age range to send ya food hints like tequila vs gluten free rice krispies?
- SteVe C
Steve, he's 6. Tequila is a ways off. :)
- Stephen Mack
How did you get the diagnosis? Our doctor wants us to test Wade to rule out celiac disease. We have to get a blood test, not looking forward to that.

Laura, blood test from a pediatrician recommended by his teacher.

Oh man! Sammy is a bread and butter kind of kid so this sounds like tons of fun. Let me know how I can help! My good friend Angela has a son sammy's age who has a wheat allergy so maybe I can get some tips from her. *hugs*

Head out here to Sac one of these weekends and check out Gluten Free Specialty store in midtown - all sorts of food items that are gluten free. I have become friendly with the owner and if she is there she will gladly give you advice and suggestions. I'd be happy to meet you there if you like. You can also like the store's Page on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/glutenf...

Elana has young boys, at least one of whom has celiac (as well as Elana herself), so I expect her recipes are kid-friendly.

So far King Arthur Flour has my favorite mixes as far as cookies, cake, bread, and brownies go. I have some Cup4Cup, but I haven't given it a whirl, yet, and Better Batter isn't available around here. This is my favorite pasta: http://www.bionaturae.com/gluten-...

Thankfully I am unaware of the scents associated with stinkbugs (though I have heard of them - I think the Simpsons mentioned them once), but I'll tell you what's really gross - turning on a halogen lamp without being aware that a moth had decided to get trapped and die recently beneath the lens cover. There's only one worse-smelling thing I've ever encountered.

My parents were born and raised in Tennessee and while I'd like to think that this isn't the norm, and we see ourselves as educated, smart, and rational people, the truth is there are a LOT of people who simply don't understand the gays. We see it in politics, in "family values", in hypocritical politicians, during elections; whenever you want a lightning bolt of derision to rile people up, talk about equality for gays whether it's marriage or rights in general, and there you go.
- Derrick
Things like this are so depressing. People just refuse to move forward, and they even want to poison the minds of the children with this bigotry so that after the current idiots are dead, we still won't move forward in the future.

South Pacific had a song that still resonates--"They Have to be Taught." That one was about racism, but it applies pretty well to sexuality issues as well. Gotta' bring 'em up narrow-minded and hateful, otherwise the hate might fade away.

Things That Make Me Stabbity: Hearing an elementary school teacher talk about how frustrated she is that she can't find the book her resource book suggests for teaching "themes" to a class - not because she has a particular love for that book, but because she can't think of any other books she might use to teach what a "theme" is.
If you teach English to elementary school kids, how the hell do you not know children's lit well enough to be able to find a book to teach the concept of "theme"?
- Katy S
And the "but that's what the resource book said to use" line - I'm soooooo not impressed. Learn to be an independent thinker and learner.
- Katy S
Fwiw, this was not a young teacher - the woman had to be well over 40. I wouldn't have excused it in a young teacher either, though.
- Katy S
I had an encounter with a colleague today that wasn't dissimilar. I looked at her syllabus, and it's obvious that she took the "pick a textbook and teach from it" route without really understanding the subject, its significance, or its applications. All I can do is be glad that I don't teach that way.
- RepoRat
Oh, this got better. I suggested a few easy to find books. She asked if they had a theme. Then, when I mentioned that one had multiple themes, it seemed to confuse her. I fear for her students.
- Katy S
This still annoys me, but mostly because I know so many very good teachers and know that this is the type of person that gives them all a bad name.
- Katy S
I do not miss theme questions. We used to keep track of the weird ones: passenger trains for 3 year olds (as opposed to freight trains, that's next week). Or the woman who wanted 25 books on zippers.
- Hedgehog
Yeah, but even that's better than someone who seems unable to find a book with any theme when the one mentioned in a textbook is unavailable.
- Katy S
x_x i don't even know what to say. part of me thinks it's great to be so irreverent and nod to hip-hop/hipster sensibilities. and part of me thinks "Can't y'all be serious?"

"You may notice something striking about this week’s American edition of Time magazine. While readers in Asia, Europe, and the South Pacific—really, the rest of the Time-reading world—confront a serious profile about Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and his role in the euro crisis, Americans are in for a special treat: a cover story called “The Surprising Science of Animal Friendships*.” (The asterisk leads to a footnote at the bottom of the cover that says, “BFFs are not just for humans anymore.”) With not one but two adorable dogs against a hot-pink background, this week’s Time really signifies the editors’ staunch commitment to serious, hard-hitting journalism, even if it means risking unpopularity. Sarcasm aside: This is not the first time this has happened. In fact, Time faced ridicule for giving the rest of the world a cover story on the Arab protests while feeding Americans a cartoon cover about “Why Anxiety Is Good For You” only two months ago."

Well, yes. We certainly don't like bad news, or things that challenge us too much. There, Time is competing with other news magazines. Here, they're trying to compete with Cosmo.
- Jennifer Dittrich
They did this when all of the other Times were showing the Occupy movement, and our cover was something inane
- ωαřмaiden ☆TeamOtto☆
"Does Time Magazine think Americans are stupid?" Yea, pretty much. Then again, given the politicians they seem to elect, their short attentions spans, their overall inability to focus on anything too complicated, let alone understand it, I think Time is providing what Americans can handle (barely). And no, I am not being too sarcastic.
- Angel R. Rivera
I don't think it is a matter of Americans being stupid or not, I think it's a cultural obsession with the trivial.
