I think I should be worried. My 3 yo just asked me, "Mama, why is that (edit!) man pointing at Barack Obama?" How does my 3yo recognize Obama from behind? o.O

In a continuation of the saga that began about ten days ago, Microsoft has altered one of its Laptop Hunters ads to reflect Apple's recent price changes. Last we'd heard, Microsoft COO Kevin Turner was boasting that the ads had been so successful that a rep from Apple had called to ask that the ads be pulled. Turner pointed out that Apple's complaint -- that the prices were no longer correct -- was the result of a price cut of "$100 or something." Now it appears that one ad -- the one featuring the second Lauren -- has been re-edited so that she no longer mentions the price of the MacBook Pro ("over $2,000"), which has been dropped to $1,700. We'll be honest -- we don't care how this turns out, just as long as we can keep on using the words "Apple" and "Microsoft" in the same sentence. [Via Apple Insider] Filed under: Laptops Microsoft alters Laptop Hunters "Lauren" ad after Apple calls to complain originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Jul 2009 12:31:00 EST. Oh cleric must be making money or getting something immoral if he is pushing GMO's.

At the very least, he is uninformed! Go read wise man before you put your support on something poisonous to mankind.

Myrna, they don't know anythings about nature and science. just they stated that this things are Halal and we have to follow their rules. i really hate them!

Finally someone does something about Apple's lying advertisements about their iPhone's 3G speeds. It's about time. I've been bitching about this for a while. Every time I see that iPhone ad pop up on CNBC and it shows speeds way, way, way, faster than what I get in real life it pisses me off.
- Thomas Hawk
from Bookmarklet
in fact, Apple should do the right thing and either require AT&T to get their 3G speeds up to snuff in San Francisco or AT&T should rebate back customers. It's shameful to see a company as fine as Apple blatantly put up deceptive advertising like they do.
- Thomas Hawk
Apple lying about 3G speeds... BAD! ;)
- Susan Beebe
Apple claim "it's relative speed compared to the original iphone, it's obvious that's what we're talking about".. um, no it wasn't!
- alphaxion

Isn't all Apple TV advertising based on lies (or to be kind hyperbole)? But maybe that is just advertising in general
- Brian Sullivan
I really enjoy the "you can't make superlative claims without proof" requirement for advertising in Europe (and elsewhere? no idea). The fact that we can lie our asses off here in ads and make any damn claim we want drives me CRAZY after having lived many years in Europe.
- abacab
Well, you have to look at it this way. For every ad that has come under a lawsuit, Apple has probably made 3 - 4 times the amount lost to the suit back in actual sales from the ads. So to them, it is just a small price in the grand scheme of the ad business.
- Wizetux
Plus with the iPhone (in the US) you still have 30 days by law to test the phone, and if you don't like it or feel that you were lied too, you can return it for a full refund from the provider. So all in all, it comes back to that good old saying "Buyer beware."
- Wizetux
Whether or not Apple profits in the end from deceptive advertising or not, it seems unethical to me and considerably lowers my opinion of them as a company. The iPhone is a fantastic product. They should market it on its merits alone. Hyping it with lies makes me not trust anything that Apple has to say.
- Thomas Hawk
And it still totally sucks that Google Maps won't work on an iPhone when they work fine over EVDO or over most other internet connections. Mapping software ought to be fundamental to an internet connected phone these days.
- Thomas Hawk
I worked on the 3G "buildouts" for AT&T here in SoCal and a few other states. I know exactly what they have and where. When I told people not to trust the 3G promises, I was ignored. But don't worry, I hear that they're really really really, for real this time going to start the real buildout any moment now. At least, that's what our clients tell us. Maybe in Q1. HAHAHAHA

"ELLEN SPERTUS, a graduate student at M.I.T., wondered why the computer camp she had attended as a girl had a boy-girl ratio of six to one. And why were only 20 percent of computer science undergraduates at M.I.T. female? She published a 124-page paper, “Why Are There So Few Female Computer Scientists?”, that catalogued different cultural biases that discouraged girls and women from pursuing a career in the field. The year was 1991.Computer science has changed considerably since then. Now, there are even fewer women entering the field. Why this is so remains a matter of dispute. "

"What’s particularly puzzling is that the explanations for under-representation of women that were assembled back in 1991 applied to all technical fields. Yet women have achieved broad parity with men in almost every other technical pursuit. When all science and engineering fields are considered, the percentage of bachelor’s degree recipients who are women has improved to 51 percent in...

"Another school of thought is what she calls the “we won” claim because women have entered computer-related fields like Web site design that are not traditional computer science. Ms. Cassell points out that it’s not much of a victory, however. The pay is considerably less than in software engineering and the work has less influence on how computers are used, and whether this actually...

yeah, the "we won" claim is b.s. unless, possibly, we're talking about information architecture, project manager, or graphic design. but chicks who *code* on the web? not so much.

This is especially true in the video games space. Our casual games division is riddled with women but so very few of them are in software engineering/development. 90/95% are producers, project managers, creatives.

Perhaps that's the problem with my diet: not enough null. I mean, wouldn't null be free of calories, sugars, transfats, sodium, and cholesterol? Null is the perfect food!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
The problems come when there's no balance between the null and the void. If you are less than 2% null, you need to offset that by increasing the amount of void you consume. mmmmm, void.

If you use it incorrectly, or you don't pay attention to how you're using it (which many probably are), then yes, this might be true. But if you continue to value the people around you and human interaction, then this isn't true. Just my two cents.

Not having a social life is what got me into computers in the first place...
- Jason R. Hunter
Internet communities are a social life (as was "pen pals" in a previous age). Does it really matter if you meet people "in person"? If so, perhaps we'll have more FriendFeed gatherings in the future. FlyerTalk.com people regularly have "DO"s around the world. ~200 of my Facebook friends are dance/Burning-Man friends who dance/party every week.
- Mitchell Tsai
Having a social life never did anything good for me. I like my online peeps much better.
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
If I didn't have an online life I wouldn't have a life offline. All the people I know and like I've met online. My friend/coworker only lives in MD because she met her boyfriend online. I met the partner-in-crime online. I found a dog breeder online...

Wait, so we're not being social right now?
- Mona Nomura
Yes. This is antisocial media. Now git offa mah lawn.

I've been online for so long, I can actually tell how a person is in real life by the way the conduct themselves online. And truth be told, I prefer my online friends since it's a collective folks with similar interests.
- Mona Nomura
It can still be a real surprise meeting an on-line friend for the first time. Screechy voice. Unusual accents. Very different look from pictures. Surprise about height. Depending on the person, some people are easier to get-to-know on-line...others are much easier to connect with in person.

I met my wife online. We've been together over ten years.

Scientific American (Sep 2008?) suggested that the "increased information sharing" in Facebook and other social media may produce a "primitive society" or "small town" effect where the community knows most of what's happening - for better or for worse. Their view was very old-school - concerned about allowing people the "opportunity to reinvent themselves" and running away from (concealing) a past where they badly f**ked up.
