Sean, think of enterprises who have IE6-only legacy internal apps. CF lets them build _new_ internal apps to HTML5, so that someday they can leave IE6. Otherwise they need to dual-target _all_ their apps to IE6 and modern browsers before they can switch. Painful. Also, many enterprises who feel it's too disruptive to move from IE6 may be okay with installing CF, because it's default-off. Let's say half of all enterprises do. Now the need to support IE6 goes down even more.

I'd actually love to see the opposite: IE8 running inside Chrome, just like the IE Tab plugin for Firefox. I use Chrome for almost everything, but Outlook webmail looks and works so much better in IE8, and I doubt that Microsoft will be working very hard to fix that.

Switching browsers is a big deal for many people (change is bad), but installing the latest Flash plugin so that you can play games, watch videos, etc is normal. This is why the "Chrome Frame" plugin is a great idea. Now they need to add some "must have" features to HTML5.

Chrome 3 still has drawbacks..no roboform support and xmarks support. Also, flash does not work on a number of sits. Firefox kept freezing(ver 3.0013 to 3.53) so I tried Flock and it uses all my old extensions and is fast.

So then it becomes the choice between different plugins. (Of course Flash is more widely distributed at the moment, but some developers may prefer Canvas + JavaScript.)

Russ: It runs Debian. If you were rolling your own (and they don't sell these units), you could turn on NFS or some other protocol (CIFS, iSCSI). They only use HTTP because it's cloud storage. NFS license is a major expense on NetApp, but all the major Linux distributions can act as NFS servers, CIFS servers, and probably iSCSI targets.

You could merge the 3 volumes into an LVM VG but the performance could become an issue with any load on it. Ok folks, the difference between friend feed and a chat room is that a chatroom doesn't aggregate all your social media activity. friendfeed pulls in your activity from a bunch of social media sites, like youtube, facebook, twitter, etc. but also provides the functionality of twitter and a chat room. So basically it's your social media life on steroids. Very powerful.

Kim, Demi hasn't been back on the thread to respond yet. I can't speak for her, but for me the biggest difference between FF and Twitter is the organization. If you send out a tweet you have to watch for @replies in response to that tweet, and they're kind of easy to miss. On FF when you make a post, all the replies to it are lined up underneath and it's much easier to follow (and take part) in the conversation.

Well, that's a big part of it Sherrie. The inclusion of media is another big selling point (for me, at least). Here people can include images, files, audio, or video on their posts and I can see/hear it here. On Twitter there's always a clickthrough, an extra tab or window, etc... Perhaps I'm lazy, but I like being able to interact with it all in one spot =)

Taking a look at your profile, I see that you're only following 12 people and not really commenting/liking all that much. That's probably why you're not getting a lot of interaction. Find some people that are interesting and interact with them on their posts. Thanks, Paul. I've been getting more and more depressed thinking about the bad ways this could go. The reassurances help a bit, at least. In fact, just hearing you speak on the point is encouraging - the open lines of communication between the FriendFeed team and its users has always been one of the great things about FriendFeed that I'm afraid will be lost with the Facebook buyout. And yes, a FFundercats appearance would be a great idea.

My first reaction is disappointment. I don't believe big corporations do better than small ones. Facebook is inferior to FriendFeed, although it's user base is much larger. Clearly FriendFeed won't survive in the long term, unless it is open sourced. Why not open up and embrace the wonders of the GPL instead of joining forces with the Walled Garden no #1? Facebook don't even operate with permalinks,.

This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed.

Been thinking about when we had to shut down our Hello service (realtime photo sharing) at Google last year. Kept it totally separate from Google Accounts, because integration was "too hard". And some of the good in Hello never quite made it over to Google. Lesson might be: don't be precious about integration. You have to survive to be useful!

Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck.

Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline.

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.)

Awful news for users but congratulations to you guys. Ideally, FB will run FF as a distinct service but I'm not hopeful. I don't want the diversity and noise that facebook brings - people doing quizzes on which movie star they resemble and playing silly games. i guess congrats are in order, but I'm going to now go and remove everything I have that feeds into FF, and I have to ask -- do I have any rights over my archive? I have a private feed, and I have no interest in offering up my lifestream to the FaceBook data-miners. While I'm happy for the FF team, since I guess this is what they wanted (congrats guys!), I can't help but think this is the beginning of the end for a great service and a vibrant community. There are reasons I don't spend any time on Facebook and do spend lots of time on FF, and some kind of "FF integrated into Facebook" just won't cut it. I hope this service will live on for at least a few more years.

Thomas Power still believes that Facebook/FF/Linkedin (2010) will be acquired by Apple (2011) and this is a transitional acquisition in the SN market cycle. The world is shifting to Mac, iTunes, iPhones and FB own the next generation. Apple have $29bn of cash on deposit price is not an issue. Just finished setting up my lifestream.fm at http://lifestream.fm/dfaulkner. Lifestream does what it says, and no more. FF's search blows lifestream away. FF is more flexible about adding source feeds, but lifestream does fine without the flexibility I suppose. FF still wins, or would, if I thought it would be sticking around. :P

Paul, will you respond to this? This is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but distracted by Facebook and with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone. I got this working with Google Reader but it was not all that easy to find the URL for sharing. Even with the hint from FF, I had to poke around in Google Reader to locate the right address. Maybe a small usability point here but it could make a difference in use of this with Google Reader.
